THIS is How You Build Tension in a Film
This brutal crime film was way too intense for my anxious brain, but in the best way possible. And most people have never even heard of it: Pusher 3.
One thing I appreciate about Nicolas Winding Refn films is that they know how to build good tension. It doesn't matter if it's a film about a driver on a vengeful quest, or a young model trying to be the next best thing. It's ALWAYS INTENSE. One underrated and often overlooked technique Refn uses to achieve this 'intensity' is letting the characters speak with their 'hands'. This can be seen in Drive, Only God Forgives, Neon Demon, as well as the Pusher trilogy we'll be discussing today.
But in my humble opinion, Refn's most nerve racking film is the last installment of the trilogy, Pusher 3. So let's delve into what makes this film such a fun-stressful-killmenowplease movie that every-nobody can enjoy (?).
As usual, you can try a whole month of MUBI for free at mubi.com/spikimamovies - this is where I discover many of my favourite films, as well as rewatch films I always loved. Also, the S.Craig Zahler film I mention at the end, 'Brawl in Cell Block 99', is streaming on MUBI in CA as well as the US! Check it out!

Event Horizon is STILL Disturbing

I actually couldn't revisit this film for over ten years because it ruined my childhood so hard. Of course, the rewatch (which only happened last year) was nothing like the first time - it wasn't as scary, as well made, or even serious as I remembered. That's fair. It happens. BUT I thought that it's a film that didn't age like milk (huge asterisk there), and that there are more clever tricks u...
Green Room's Unexpected Terror

There's this one movie scene that disturbed me so much on my initial watch that I had to take a minute to regain my composure before resuming. That scene was from Jeremy Saulnier's 2015 work, Green Room. If you know, you know. But why? Why is it so disturbing? Violent? Shocking? Is it the gore? the acting? Or is it something else? Green Room is a film about expectations - well, not thematically...
The Anxious Perspective of Good Time
zhlédnutí 41KPřed 4 měsíci
Can a film simulate a full blown panic attack? How could a film make the audience feel anxious, without showing something awful? Safdie Brothers' Good Time (2017) does exactly that - although like I say in the video, it's more of a trigger for me than a one to one representation of what panic attacks feel like. And yes, I am very well versed with panic attacks (unfortunately) and I do say that ...
Nightcrawler | Cinema's Most Chilling Character

How do you depict a psychopathic character in a film? Is it just about the acting, or is there more to it that is actually 'cinematic'? In fact, what even is a psychopath? Is that a real thing? (hint - in terms of diagnosis, no it's not.) Louis Bloom from Dan Gilroy's Nightcrawler (2014) is one of my favourite films when it comes to effectively portraying a bone-chilling psychopathic (or sociop...

Have you noticed how Mia is ALWAYS in YELLOW? What about the fact that the entire film is graded in shades of BLUE? And the sounds? What does Hereditary and Beau is Afraid have in common? MISDIRECTION. Like how Hereditary's true force turns out to be Annie's mother Ellen, Beau is Afraid is NOT about Beau, but about Mona. But what's really fascinating about this is HOW Ari Aster misdirects you into thinking Annie or Beau is the true protagonist of these films. Let's take a look at what kind of tricks and symbols Ari Aster ha...

Have you ever looked up in the sky and felt like the stars are going to fall on your head? Or perhaps you've tried Google Earth VR like I did and panicked at the sight of the Sun. Climax | The Most Anxious Film Ever?

Gaspar Noé films are notoriously difficult to watch, and I've covered three of them. Climax (2018), while considered by many of his avid fans as inferior to his other works, are widely known as his most 'anxious' - or should it be 'insane' - film to date, and I do not disagree. But what makes Climax such a nerve-racking experience? Technically, the prize goes to the film's use of 'sounds', espe...

Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue is widely considered the best psychological thriller ever made. It certainly gave ME nightmares back in the days, and the best part about it all is that, while it's one terrifying work to watch, it's also an incredibly well made film, and quite beautiful in that regard. While there are, therefore, plenty of dissections and analysis on this masterpiece, I rarely see an...

I have to be honest with this film: I think it's highly overrated. I'm not claiming it's poor but it's simply far too contrived to be considered harrowing, relatively speaking. The direction relies far too heavily on the same techniques: unrealistic background noise, facial close-ups, etc. so the acting becomes secondary. The pacing is thoroughly wrong: the young actor falls to looks of anguish; the same looks of anguish, far too quickly and far too early in the film meaning that the shock value is lost later when it should be climactic, but isn't. This is also compounded by his unrealistically jovial countenance right at the beginning of the film before he abandoned at the camp with Dashya. All-in-all the direction and production is so taxing that there is no room for the acting to breath. The story arc is not dependent on drama; it's dependent on camera work; it's not dependent on atmosphere, it's dependent on production. Perhaps the director's techniques would have been better suited to a short film, but for a film such as this it just doesn't work.

when someone's making horror usually they make it so that the monster is something you can't understand. like an alien or a ghost or something like that. not something you can. the fact that it's just a woman creates paranoia

I can relate to the empathy deficiency as an autistic man. I have to wear a mask to make other people comfortable, but I put effort into making them comfortable because I care. ASPD folks only care as far as it benefits them and it comes off differently when you witness it.

Down the rabbit hole i go. Watched "The face of god" and I'm diving deep in short horror videos. I love horror but it's frustrating how mega productions with tons of resources fail to use said resources. Like even kids these days won't get scared but that s**t. The only relatively recent series I found to be truly good horror was "The haunting of hill house". Perfect in my opinion.

I feel like the movie is a statement about how close our modern society is to psychopathy, by showing how close the journey of a complete emotionless psychopath can be to what could be perceived as "heroic" with a just few minor tweaks. If you spoke the movie out loud, it could easily be misunderstood as a story about the American dream. A guy who used to be a criminal realizes the error of his ways and starts his own business' by working harder and doing things that other aren't willing to do he achieves success. He expands his business' and makes it to the top no matter what it takes. He even finds love and friendship only to tragically lose them when he puts his job ahead of his relationships. He learns a valuable lesson and, by not giving up, fulfils his lifelong dreams. Just like the soundtrack, the movie is only slightly removed from being a completely relatable protagonists journey. There is only a hint that something is not right. We can all be the hero of our own story if we choose to leave a few details out and embellish others. You don't even have to tell a lie to pull it off.
