The Anxious Perspective of Good Time

  • Can a film simulate a full blown panic attack? How could a film make the audience feel anxious, without showing something awful?
Safdie Brothers' Good Time (2017) does exactly that - although like I say in the video, it's more of a trigger for me than a one to one representation of what panic attacks feel like. And yes, I am very well versed with panic attacks (unfortunately) and I do say that this is how MY panic attack feels like, so keep that in mind.
Either way, let's take a look at Good Time's brilliant cinematography, its incredibly subtle characterization methods, and how it ultimately creates one of the most anxiety inducing cinematic experiences of recent years! (After all, Safdie Brothers' films are called the 'anxiety' genre)
    Enjoy!

I don't think I'll ever experience a movie that gives me anxiety like first half of "The Descent". I've never claimed to have claustrophobia, but that film, and any other "caving" content gives me claustrophobia.

Well done. You're among my favorite film analysists for a reason. I don't know if you do your own editing, but if you do, it's some of your best to date.
I struggle between this and Uncut Gems for anxiety producers, but simply in the face of novelty, Good Time wins. What a film. I think you were able to extract a perfect metaphorical ending, so much so, that even if it wasn't the director's intent, I see it as canon.

It’s funny in a weird way, I had such severe panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and subsequent Benzo addiction that I became agoraphobic and unable to work or socialize several years back. So I watched a lot of movies to pass the time. I certainly went through “comfort movie” phases where it was strictly Remember the Titans and The Mighty Ducks, but I love thrillers and horror movies so I didn’t want to abandon a passionate interest due to my fragile mental state. I wasn’t really affected too much by Good Time or Uncut Gems (outside of one specific scene in the latter) or Hereditary and Midsommar but Climax definitely got to me.

This is my favorite movie of all time and I love your breakdown. If you want another anxiety movie to break down, check out Todd Haynes’ Safe, which is similarly effective in causing anxiety, but mostly because of how it portrays it. It’s much slower and more methodical, but it is very effective.

How do you explain a panic attack to someone who has never had one? Great question.
    My experience:
You feel like you're gonna die. But death never comes. It gets so bad you literally get to the point that you just want it to be over. You wish to die just so the feeling is over. Then, after it passes, you spend the next day or the next few days in a state of ptsd. Like if you were in a bad car accident but somehow you aren't physically injured.

You should also check out 'Heaven Knows Best (2014)' which was some of his early work and actually based on real people. I also came across this guy who lives in a van on youtube (Joey The Gypsy) who was actually best friends with Ilya (the main character in the film) and tells stories on his channel all of the time about the crazy shit they got into while on the streets in NY when they were using. He's sober now (or at least off the dope) but kind of crazy to randomly come across his channel after seeing the movie and hearing he was also asked to be in it but he wasn't really down for it. He did actually have a small part in Uncut Gems though. Anyways, just search for his video titled "The Legend of Ilya Part 1" and he talks about the films, Ilya, the mysteries that surround his death and other characters in the movies.

A full panic attack is standing at the edge of a hugh cliff and enjoying the view with some suddenly pushing you down from behind without a warning. The first feeling you experience when you feet lose the ground and the adrenalin kicks in, that is a panic attack. Except it doesn't last just for a few seconds...
