Decision to Leave | Misdirection Done Right

- Known for his intense subject matter and fancy actions sequences, Park Chan-wook's newest film, Decision to Leave is anything but extreme - at least on the surface.
This video contains major spoilers for Decision to Leave, which is streaming exclusively on MUBI in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, India and Turkey. Watch it with 30 days free at mubi.com/spikimamovies
Park is often misunderstood as a director who prefers style over story; but in my opinion (and he says so too in his interviews), I think his style is always chosen meticulously to serve the story, and if it wouldn't do any good to amplify the theme of the film, he wouldn't unnecessarily use it. The same goes with everything else you often see in his films, including violence and action. While Decision to Leave may seem like an obvious story with blatant symbolism, it functions more like a visual poem that expresses its emotions with its rhythm, colour, tone, images, and sounds.
It's a constant clash between complexity and simplicity, clarity and obscurity, mountains and oceans, Hae-jun and Seo-rae...
Beautiful.

What's Park Chan-wook's best film to date? What did you think of Decision to Leave?
Watch Decision to Leave for free at Mubi.com/spikimamovies
can you do a video on little women the drama? love ur work btw!
I loved this film & the ending gutted me. But also It was funny which surprised me as Chan-wook's other films to my memory haven't been. For me it felt like Decision to Leave was Chan-wook's most personal film, a letter of love for an unrequited.
On another note would you consider doing a video on Aftersun? That film broke me like no other in 2022. Thank you
Thank you so much ❤
I saw VOIR on Netflix in which Tony Zhou(from Every Frame a Painting) in episode 2 talked about how Mrs Lady Vengeance in his opinion the best revenge movie of all time.
I feel the same for that movie but I like Park's JSA very much.
I think my favorite PCW film is probably Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. It was the first movie of his I saw and I always preferred it to Oldboy. Oldboy is amazing, obviously, but I must've seen SFMV at the perfect time or something because that movie hit me like a ton of bricks.
Decision to Leave is up there and is definitely one of his best so far. I loved every second of it. Probably going to pre-order the blu-ray within the next day or two.
I absolutely love your videos & can't thank you enough for all the work you put into them.
Another thing that I love from the interrogation scene is how strangely in sync they were. It can be seen when they were cleaning up after they had dinner. For newly acquainted people, there should have been fumbling or sort of clashing into doing stuff for the first time together, but they did it like they knew what the other would do. There may be a language barrier but their gestures and movement were dancing.
Oh and I love how Seo-rae explores the pockets of the detective and manages to remember where they are, just getting the lip balm amongst all of his pockets. While his wife has to take her time, finding what she is looking for.
Dang, great observation
omg you're right
Wow
I can't believe I never picked up on the focus shifts in the interrogation scenes on the big screen! What an awesome video that helps us see Park's creativity and care for his craft
I didn't pick up on that either -- and I never noticed Seo-Rae's face in the waves, which makes me feel a little silly. But at least I noticed all the reflections and mirroring, which I took to mean that everything could be seen from two different perspectives. I'm sure that was another level that Park Chan-Wook built into the film, but every time I watch one of Spikima's breakdowns, I realized how very, very much I missed.
I noticed during the interrogation scene when it first shows her reflection on the mirror being more clearer than her correct reflection.
Christopher Nolan used this technique for the En Route / Boarding Scene "Inception" (Cobb / Saito) "If i get on this plane and you don't honour our agreement etc" subtle and outstanding attention to detail......
This is my favourite from Park Chan-Wook. The restraint he shows allows the tension to grow, and yet his sumptuous visual style is so seductive
rly? found it boring af
I didn't expect to like this so much. It's really up there with his best movies. Still get a haunting feeling when I think about this movie.
@@lazytoad2616 I loved it but so much because it was so gorgeous so its valid to think it was boring
"their decision to leave was never meant to be fulfilled it was just another phrase for a wish to stay." damn even that encapsulates everything
As soon as I saw the interrogation scene I was completely puzzled on how it was filmed. Ive never seen a shot with different focus points on the same scene in that way before. My guess is that it was shot with a deep enough focal plane where both characters and their reflections are in focus and then digital defocus is applied where necessary. Amazing technical direction as always from one of my fave directors.
Great analysis as always Spikima!
good to know it isn't just rubes like me baffled about that
or clinging to a hunch that it hasn't been done in post
@@EggBastion definitely done in post
It was shot with two cameras facing each other simultaneously. It was a mind-blowingly simple trick that really makes us (at least me and here you) overthink. czcams.com/video/isa03pMTfKQ/video.html (01:49)
@@vnthanh123 Thanks!!
It’s a good day when spikima uploads.
saved my days.
I need to aggressively rewatch this over and over again so I can continue appreciating the visual poetry park chan wook so graciously shared with us
Dude.. This was beautiful! I did my first rewatch last night and was shocked at how visually perfect this film was. He crafted such a heartbreaking and beautiful story all with imagery and sound. A visual poem is a perfect way to describe it. Every single shot has insane depth and meaning. Well done! This shot up my favorite of the year list quickly.

@@jezgarrett9059 thanks! I love these. Didn't think about the VFX once while watching. Amazing stuff.
And this film got absolutely snubbed with the Oscars this year. I was shocked.

My list

Man this film ruled. It was easily one of the best films that came out last year and I'm sure I'll be rewatching it many many times. Park Chan-Wook is without a doubt one of the best to ever do it.
The detective's wife working at a nuclear power plant fits in well with the whole water motif since reactors need fresh water (detective) to cool the rods to avoid a meltdown (their shaky relationship) but SeoRae (salt water) comes into the picture, contaminates the detective, and cause their marriage to go into meltdown, much like how the tsunami crashed into and caused the Fukushima nuclear disaster…or I'm just overanalyzing lol
Love your analysis!
Honey can you use your fresh water to cool down my nuclear reactor? 😏
Great video! In retrospect, it seems telling that Song Seo-rae omits the last part of Confucius's quote: “The wise love water, the good love mountains. The wise are active, the good are tranquil. The wise are joyful, the good enjoy long life.”
i saw this in theater, it was brilliant. park chanwook truly is a genius. his films are always so meticulously thought out & have such depth. i adore his work.
Really enjoy the fact that you are doing video essays on Korean films, it got me to really appreciate how great these Korean directors and stories are.
Hope Spikima recommends more films like this
Will do!
Imo, I think Studio Ghibli movies (especially ones directed by Hayao Miyazaki) use "boring scenes" really well, scenes where they just show the mundane parts of life e.g. washing dishes / chores etc which make the world and characters feel full and alive. Which I feel is prevalent in alot of Asian cinema and animation if thats make sense. Great video ❤❤
Had to agree with this. I can still remember how much warmth simple thing like cleaning the corridor brought out to watch with the forever perfect summer on the background.
I think there's two ideas behind this. First is "ma" the concept of the space that passes between moments, and secondly the idea of ritual. There's a kind of zen appreciation in doing a task (even mundane) as well as you can engrained in Japanese culture (which is perhaps a shared idea in other Asian countries given the historic influence of China on all of Asia). Whereas for westerners, we tend to approach mundane tasks with a sense of frustration or boredom at having to do them at all. I think this is partly why all the cleaning montages in Miyazaki movies. But I remember when he was talking about From Up on Poppy Hill, that the character should make her bed (not leave it a mess) because it demonstrated her character to the audience. I wonder if Ozu was a big influence on Miyazaki. Of course cleaning was also a way of making progress with an environment (making a house into a home) and showing how characters work together.
"It's a beautiful poem", perfect! This movie is beautiful, mezmerising and poetic.
The moment I saw the interrogation scene I knew you were gonna dissect it marvelously, but the depth you went to still surprised me, another great analysis for a film that deserves so much more attention that it got
People weren't giving it enough credit for the visual richness that this film possesses, they were looking for the answers through what was said, but the story speaks so much more without saying anything, the way Park Chan-wook visually conveys the messages is pretty much unmatched in the current time period
My friend made that point about the mountain in the end that was made of sand and what it represents, I was gutted i didn't noticed that and put it in my video on this film, but I'm glad you did and you presented them with way more techincal prowess
by far the greatest review of analysis of Decision to Leave....
wow, haven't had this much fun since Analysis of Hitchcock classes
At last!
I watched the movie 4 times but never noticed the side profile of 서래 in the scene where 해준 seeks her at the shore. Maybe directors like Park just naturally 'do' things like sophisticating the scene to perfection so unknowingly, until only he feels something clicks. Just like you said those designs are sometimes indiscriminately fused into the movie, thereby unnoticeable, but we still can perceive every surroundings unconsciously because they are alreay embedded in the plot.
The ways that horizontal/vertical perspectives divide the characters' destinies and their purposes are just amazing.
해준 won't survive without her because she was the unresolved case-just like he tied his shoelace during final part of him finding her at the shore, he cannot run or walk without a tangled, massed-up mystery-that is so vital for him doing things that make him who he is.
What a heartfelt and longing film this is. Truly represents the feelings of loss of love that will never work.

Decision to Leave already blew my mind, but your analysis blew it even further. Holy smokes. What a delicate web Park Chan-wook weaves
That interrogation scene is so amazingly shot

We will be talking about this movie for decades. Even though it received critical appraisal, it’s still highly underrated.
Your videos are all so poetic, they beautifully convey the poetry on screen! Thank you so much for another lovely analysis on an incredible film
You're explanations/breakdowns never cease to amaze. I've watched the film twice in succession with great attention yet haven't picked up 20% of the visuals. Hats off. This has to be my most favorite CZcams channel.
These videos really help us (or me) to appreciate the film and filmmaker even more because I definitely didn't pick out all these small details like you. Thanks for the beautiful work!
Thank you so much for this video! I have literally been OBSESSED with this film since I saw it. Your analysis is really on point and just makes me love this masterpiece more. What a precision from Park Chan-wook!
My favorite to date is "Sympathy for Mr Vengeance", then "Lady Vengeance". I really liked the ending of "Decision to Leave".
Your analysis on the interrogation scene's cinematography was spot on! The meticulousness created for this movie knows no bounds:D I had just watched it yesterday and now I love it even more. Thank you so much for creating this eloquent video essay! 💙
This looks like a good movie to watch. So one thing about the metaphor of the mountain and water (or rock and water) is that being a detective he must conform and maintain the integrity of being a detective in order to successfully carry out his job. Where she as the suspect has no restraints and can do whatever she needs to do to keep from getting caught.
The old question of which would you rather be, rock or water. Making one question how they see themselves as being strong and their perception of strength. The rock is strong and doesn't move and water must flow around the rock. But water can assume any form and during a flood it is water that moves the rock.
And there's for him to be with her would be to break his integrity as a detective. And since water can take the shape of the container, it can't be held in a more romantic sense of being held in an embrace. So for him to break his integrity as a detective would be a rock crumbling. Thereby ultimately losing any hopes of being in any kind of shape to contain water.
And the facial profile in the wave I see as more impermanence is the only consistency of water. The wave takes it's shape, is here, and it's gone. As was she.
Thank you for this video. I loved this movie when i first watched it but the more i learn about it, the meaning of every shot, of camera movements, colors, the more i love it. There´s so many cool hidden details that makes the movie perfect.
latest entry in the canon of “how to distinguish people who take movies too literally and themselves too seriously”. Mr. Park is a brilliant director; no one could or should really say this is his best film, but certainly it will be some people’s favorite, and in my opinion with this film he is knowingly transcending all preconceptions of a Park Chan-wook film. quote: “it's a luxury to put yourself as a viewer in such capable hands” truly!
editing is also brilliant and the performances excellent; the screenplay elevates from delight to brilliance over its course. fuckton of Golden Age cinema pathos and intrigue transposed onto modern characters, a modern setting
i really was skeptical for most of this film - the runtime is felt - but i do believe it nailed the final stretch. for much of it i thought, incorrectly, that i’d had it figured out, albeit with enough ambiguity present i did not commit to the assumption; it soon thereafter concludes with a monster haymaker tearjerker gutpunch that also marries the film’s themes (narrative and visual) and references and callbacks; i spent much of the subsequent days simply thinking about this film. i also just love tang wei
One of my favourite movies of the last year. The ending, the soundtrack stuck with me
Another brilliant analysis. It is true what they say. The more you understand, the better you appreciate, in a story, in a movie, in a person. Happy belated new year and keep creating more awesome videos like this.
Man.. The pacing and the editing of this video essay are top notch. Bravo.
I love the idea of seeing it as a visual poem. IMO the term would apply perfectly to InTheMoodForLuv
I feel that when I watch a movie, it just washes over me, the finer details mostly missed.....I really appreciate your work.....like looking at a partially covered painting, then having an educated enthusiast come along and pull away the drape :)
This was my favorite movie this year

An inspired and inspiring essay. Thank you!
This is your best video.
Oh my… I realized I’ve been waiting for your review until I see this in my recommendation list
Park is such an incredible director, I love how he plays with language in his films, that he shows the ways people create to communicate with each other (the mirror scene in Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is one of my favorite scenes in any film.) His delicate style works so well with the stories he tells, and makes them feel all the more tragic in the end because even with all the care and subtlety, the characters are bound to their fates.
I like the film very much. Park Chan Wook is an excellent director. I love Tang Wei's acting.
5 minutes in and im already mindblown thank you so much for this video
Nice video, the analysis of the camerawork in the interrogation scene was especially interesting. I don't agree with every conclusion you've come to but I appreciate your efforts to elucidate and defend all of your arguments.
I feel like it's worth it if you're gonna talk so much about the camerawork, shot framing, etc. to mention some of the production crew and not contribute to the idea of a single auteur.
Kim Jiyong [김지용] (cinematrographer)
Ryu Seonghi [류성희] (production design/art director)
Gwak Jeongae [곽정애] (costume designer)
Thanks for sharing. I wish I could get more on board with this film, feels like I'm missing out when everybody else seems to love it so much more than me.
A beautiful video for a beautiful video
Love your writing style dude 🫶
Wonderful formal analysis! Adding to your dissection of the interrogation scene, the visual obscurity goes hand in hand with the presence of screens: the mirror, the other side of the interrogation full of screens of different sizes, apple watches, the GPS in the car... I wonder what you make of the theme of obscurity and the prevalence of screens in the film.
"The moment your love ends, my love begins" this dialogue might be referring to the detective being a mountain and her being an ocean...
I just watched it in a preview screening on silvester and I was waiting for your analysis on it. Not my favorite from Park Chan-wook, but I will definitely rewatch it when it comes to Mubi in Germany!
