  • 1969 Chevrolet Corvette 427 L88 vs 1968 Dodge Super Bee 426 Hemi (Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race)
First you have the legendary Hemi in a 1968 Dodge Super Bee breathing 425 horsepower from the legendary 426 ci HEMI. Then throw that against a 1969 Corvette... but not just any Corvette... a Corvette with a L88 427 making 430 horsepower. I don't think I could ever thank both of these owners enough for actually bringing out these cars and racing them. What a rare match-up!
Remember, these cars participate in the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race series, so check them out on fb and also their website. Here are the rules:

just to make clear to everyone,, the superb ee is a .030 over bore, .015 stroke 11.5 compression, .480 lift at the valve Legal engine according to pure stock rules. It has made 715 horse power on the dyno with exhaust manifolds. It is the fastest pure stocker. it has ran as quick as 10.87 at 129 mph. The car has 250lbs of ballistic for this race. No wheel spin , and I am playing with the L88 at the finish line . Just enough to stay ahead. I should know , I built it for Rick Mahoney from PA. I'm not a true Mopar man ,, but performance like this can not be ignored! I've been around drag racing my entire life. I've learned that they all can be amazingly fast if you know what you are doing. The 4.10 gears surely helped the Hemi jumping ahead. Although it's obviously a fire-breather of an engine, a true powerplant, it's known for not having as much pull at low-rpm as other big blocks, like the 440-ci RB cousin both in Magnum and Six Pack/Barrel forms...but once it builds up the revs, few engines can catch up with it. The class requires a CRAPPY tire. This video does a GREAT JOB of showing a big reason for Chysler Success back in the day. For what-ever reason a lot of MOPARs were set up to "hook" better. In this race it's really obvious that Corvette is the much faster car but the inability to the power down vs the Dodge is a great example of why chasis set up is everything. More power won't help if you can't put it down. Allow slicks in this race and it wouldn't even be close.......the Corvette is very obviously the much more powerful and faster ride between these two cars.

My stock, 1970 Z-28 also had 4.10s. The 'Vette had a more extreme 4.56. While great for drag, these cars did not have overdrive and were terrible for highway driving. Engines were pumpin' about the same ponies, so it came down to shift efficiency and that big, cast-iron automatic pulled through, the driver just stomped the GO pedal and held on. lol My father briefly owned an L-88 Vette and it was an amazing car, but my Mother was having none of it and Pop traded it for his '67 Chevelle that he installed a Rochester fuel injection unit and drag raced it quite successfully; he said folk just didn't understand the units. I think his real edge was the port work he did on his heads. He spent two weekends w/ a set of vernier calipers, a die grinder and a 100cc buret, checking and re-checking volumes and measurements in the intake/exhaust ports and the combustion chambers. is that why they outlawed the Over head cam 427 Ford because the hemi couldn't run with it because they had the fear of God in them, I don't think so. they told Ford they had to add 400 lbs of weight so the hemi could keep up.so later on Ford put some semi hemi heads on their 429 and called it the boss 429 and actually the race version made about 30 more HP than Chyrslers race hemi, and Richard petty got mad at Plymouth in 69 switched to Ford and won the championship with boss 429 power. I don't see any fear in any of that.

Well There was the cobras that took corvette home, and you never seen Cobras vs any kinda dodge cuz they would have been smoked in a real circuit race. Absolutely smoked. The Daytona woulda have beaten it even worse, but no one ever talks about that.

    • @mikeburks9641

austin conaway chysler never had a sports car to compete with the Cobra, the Corvette didn't do to well. the NASCAR Daytona's and the Cobra were two totally different cars so to say what would have happened is ridiculous. Chyrslers had their great days in racing history but so did GM and Ford, none of them ever totally dominated anything for very long, it was to competitive.

Mike, that’s my point Chrysler never had anything going in circuit racing, but before the muscle cars was the Shelby Cobra, and Daytona Coupe and it beats all the muscle cars. The OP commenter must not know that, but you also will see thunderbirds and falcons on tracks along with the gt350 so muscle cars did hit the tracks but it was mostly fords. Drag racing is cool but the test of a driver and the car is way cooler, I don’t think many Chrysler’s could race for 24 hours straight maybe the 12 hours....

This is cool & I appreciate the near stock cars & the owners/drivers bringing them out to roar!
..Back in the day..true stock..Mopars ruled faaar and wiiiide.
You can't beat the unibody plus torsion bar front, leaf spring rear chassis/suspension and super tough, big power drive trains.
Why's: Tbars allow easy adjustment..to help transfer weight to the rear right..esp important minus slicks and/or racing on normal roads not on a rubber coated drag strip. plus the weight of them is more towards the center of a cars lengthwise, not the front like coils.
Leaf springs..do i have to say anything?
Perfectly simple & tuned to transfer torque to push the axle down.
The harder you hit the loud pedal, the harder the leaf springs push down..on launch the whole car will rise up, front and back.
all of that working from a very strong and torsionally stiff unibody.
Mopars carried more reciprocating loss, due to beefier engine internals, as well as the transmissions and rear axles..but they were made with extra care in engineering to run hard for a dang long time.
    And the beat goes on

Funny story about the L-88 Our local Funeral director told his son he would buy him a new corvette when he graduated in 68. The car. he bought, a brand new L-88 corvette which in many ways was a stripped down race car. Him and another I knew was in Harrisburg PA late at night and needed to get home. Our local interstate was just finished but they were waiting on the politicians bla bla speeches to open it. They decided to see what the corvette would do and started down interstate 81 to home about 50 miles away. They said the Vette was at 150 MPH and wouldn't really go any faster without redlining. After a number of miles they saw headlights behind them the lights slowly crept up and the red lights started flashing. It was one of the state police's new interceptors which not only matched the vette's speed, it actually was able to go quite a bit faster. When they stopped the cop only gave them a chewing out because the road wasn't commissioned yet. They spent some time looking at the police car. A Plymouth Fury with the Hemi A car heavier, shaped like a box, 4 doors ,automatic transmission was able to run them down. PS I had a friend in the state police who told me that he went to the capital to get the new cars in 1971. Him an another police officer wanted to see what they would do. At 160 he left off because the front end was getting light it had the 440 motor that most of the state police interceptors came with.
