holy hell, both of these cars are insane!! nobody really seems to understand how quick a 12 second quarter mile is these days, what with all the sub 10 second cars they're running, but I really think it's amazing that they're able to run that fast considering their age. props to the owners for having them running so well, I love seeing these races!
I know right? The Camaro test back in '69 was a whole 2 seconds slower? I'd really like to see what the owner did to it
@@VG-iq8xq I would be curious to hear what the owner did to it too(obviously sticking to the factory stock rules), because let's be honest, that's quick, even for modern standards
And that's on narrow tires to boot! Put a set of drag radials on those cars. And they might dip into the high 11s! And that's naturally aspirated. Cars today that run better times are all forced induction.
@@chadhaire1711 , this class is "fast " factory appearing stock tire. They run the biggest factory option cam. Do a substantial amount of cylinder head work , distributor curving, carb work and chassis tuning. They even hog out the cast iron exhaust manifolds. And for better traction wear down the tread on the bias tire. But, it goes to show how doing that extra work on factory components can really increase the engine output and how the car can launch on a polyglas bias tire.
Especially at the weight of those cars as well
My first car was a 1970 Charger 440 six pack. The sound of those 3 Holley’s was like taking viagra. It just kept on giving.
Amen🙏
@@chadhaire1711 390hp gross. Remember I bought this car in 1972. So this was a fast car for that time. The center carb was 500cfm, and the outer 2 carbs were 350cfm. So yes, it sounded like viagra when it all was tuned and came in right. My current Challenger would have run circles around it, but these cars didn’t exist then.
@@justpray365 Corvettes were 500 in the center and 350 for the outers, which equal 1200 cfm.
Mopar used 350 in the center and 500's for the outers, which equal 1350 like he said in the video.
Just a note: 2 barrel carbs are rated differently than 4 barrel. Divide 2v barrels by 1.414.
1350/1.414 = 955 cfm. 1200/1.414 = 849
@@rondpert5167 You are absolutely correct. I had a 50 year brain fart. The sound was glorious and I still remember that.
OHHH 70 CHARGER RT
MIGHT HAVE BEEN FAST BUT THE LOOKS WERE SECOND TO NONE
I'm a Ford guy, but I love all the GM/Mopar performance engines, even the small-blocks. Great race, like always, C&Z.
Never underestimate the 340 small block, they had MUCH more horsepower than advertised. They wear advertised @ 290 horsepower, but actually produced 350-360 hp.
The 1969 Dart's 340 made 320-330 HP according to the NHRA. But my favorite Mopar 340 has to be the 6-BBL/Six Pack from the AARs and T/As. Those made 350-360 HP as well I believe.
That 396cid is fast Chevy masterpiece
Incredible driving by both - those reaction times would make a Mongoose jealous! A BB Chevy, and a 440 Six Pack? NICE! Thank you as always.
That was close racing, you have to love a Superbee with a six pack too
THAT LITTLE BIG BLOCK WAS SCREAMING DOWN THAT STRIP...HIGH REV BIG BLOCKS BY CHEVROLET.👍👍👍👍
The 396 is the 327s big brother 👍🏁
@@josephmartinez8803 the more cubes the better for making those big intake ports work.
One of the best matchups on this channel. I think I splooged at least twice per race. The sounds of those cars, you just can't beat it.
That's a super insect A12!💪
WOW, the symphony of big blocks.... intoxicating 🤘
Fantastic match up C&Z, I'm a diehard Mopar guy with a sweet spot for those A12 440 Sixpack/barrel Superbees and Roadrunners, but damn! do I always weaken in the knees when I hear a the sweet sound of a SS396 especially if its in a Camaro!
Both of those cars are no slouch when it comes to speed! And the Red A12 Superbee brings back a lot of good memories for me, because my dad use to drive a '69 Dodge Coronet 500 (originally a 318, swapped for a 383) it wasn't the "fastest" but it was cirtainly quick! It also was very close to that shade of red.
Again, thanks for the close race and post, I love seeing these classic cars doing what they were built to do... Go fast, and haul a$$!
This was about the most even match I've seen in a while. Love both and thumb up for posting them.
great cars. great racing. thank you.
I figured that 396 would be way over matched against that 440 six pack, guess I was wrong... AGAIN! LOL. 😂😂😂
I actually thought with the gearing difference the Dodge would take it.
@@chrishill1286 they both have the same gears
Camaro not Camero
I thought the Camaro would take this just because of the lighter weight. If the Super Bee had a Hemi, I think he would have taken the best of 3, imho.
Wow that 396 propels that Camaro better than I have seen them do on the Chevelles but I bet the Camaro is lighter. Nice matchup though. Sweet cars for sure.
@@steveferguson6809 I’ve seen several comments over time on these videos of people calling them Cameros. Wonder if they really think that’s how it’s spelled or if their phone is auto correcting lol
Goodday C & Z,
What an absolute treat for Sunday morning whilst having my breakfast & washing it down with good old Greek coffee.
That has to be the best racing so far this year.
Went down to the wire, all 3 races were super close from 2 of the best muscle cars back in the day.
Thank you for highlighting how back in 1965 the L78 in the Impala & Corvette were rated at 425 hp.
I have at least 120 muscle car books & not one of them goes into detail the difference between the 425 hp L78 & the 1966 375 hp L78.
If you can shine some light on it, or anyone it would be greatly appreciated.
A quick reference to Ronnie Sox & what quarter mile he ran in a bone stock Plymouth Roadrunner 6BBL manual back in the day.
It was a feature in a magazine & I believe he managed to get high 12's in it.
Hope you are well.
Freezing cold winter in Melbourne.

Louis Kats from Melbourne Australia ☺ 👍 ❤
Both cars won in the right lane, must of been a slight advantage.
Naw.. watch the front end pop up at launch. Who ever cut the better tree won.
Best matchup I've seen in a while, thanks.
Man I love that A12 super bee, definitely one of my top mopar picks. That was some really close racing there to be honest, hats off to both drivers on that one.
Absolutely great drag race between these two amazing machines. I'm sad I can only give you 1 thumbs up because this close race deserves more than just 1. Excellent video Cars and Zebras, keep up the great work!
@@chadhaire1711 a lot of these muscle cars from that era suffered from t ET robbing facts . One was the stock exhaust didn’t flow enough air to satisfy a lawn tractor and two they suffered from a major lack of traction in first and second gear. A set of headers and 9” slicks will put both of the se car in NHRA stock class and would be solidly in the ten second 1/4 mile times.
Always enjoy seeing cars from my generation racing. Especially a Camaro beating a Dodge. I've owned 9 Camaros over the years. My most valuable one was a 67 Z-28. Wish I still had that one!
One of your best match ups. Thanks for all the fun memories 😊
Love this channel. And my wife will watch it with me. Lol
Assuming this was live on May 21st at 10am, that's a good crowd turnout.
😳 love both of them.
Nice close matchup, I like them both. THANKS C&Z!!!
Great race!
Great video & race! Thanks for posting...
Wow if I had the chance I couldn't pick one. Both beautiful cars and very fast love them both. Great video. Good to hear some of your comments Iike them also.
I'm a total Mopar dude and the bee is my favorite car in life I used to own a 69 but hats off to the Camaro too brilliant classic Hot rods I love it
Another awesome race! Can't get much closer than this...I love both these cars. Two of the quickest from the muscle car era. Would like to see a 440+6 Cuda or Challenger run against this Camaro..I think it would be an interesting matchup. Thanks for another great video, C&Z!
That A12 could transfer some weight and actually better than a Cuda due to wheelbase. But it did give 300 lbs away to the Camaro. A Cuda weighed the same as the A12, 35xx, showing that the A12 were stripped down pretty good. They were bare bones and lots of induction on lots of cubic inches. They were faster than a Hemi Super Bee of the same year.
@@thegreenerthemeaner Thanks for the info! The A12 was definitely a no-frills drag racers special. Were they quicker than the Hemi SB in '69 because of the added weight of the 426?
@@gary9426 Yes
Both cars had HP motors ! Good match up !
Great race. I really thought the SB was going to take it
Great video C&Z!!
Gotta love the Muscle car era races
TCT9MM, Camaro is not a Muscle car. It's a pony car.
All the babies out there that whine and moan about these cars being "modified". So what. Most of these modifications can be done on your driveway or in your garage and that's part of what made them so special in the first place. You have to be a wizard today with an arsenal of tech equipment to even attempt to work on the newer cars. The factory knew that it couldn't pump out more HP for many reasons so they let the public do what they wanted with off the shelf factory upgrades available at those dealers. Keep in mind these are naturally aspirated engines and in my opinion, are the best. So keep your turbo while you're at it. Long live the muscle car, the 1st generation of muscle car.
As far as the difference in horsepower ratings of that L78 if I remember right it was for insurance purposes. The motor was the same but when they factory tested it they rated the later year using a lower RPM limit.
Nice muscle car duel.
Note that all A12s had 4:10s.
Nice to see a good heads up race. Cars had the same rear gear which really makes it even. Both are beautiful cars. That Camaro runs good.
except for the big weight difference.
Some serious racin' here, folks. That Camaro is super strong.
Great cars, great racing!
Can't believe you didn't call-out that Hound`s tooth interior in the Camero...lol
I've been to about 6 of those PSMCDR at Mid-Michigan. In all of my 53yrs of life its been the most fun car event (as a spectator) I've ever been to.
It's so much fun to go around and look at these museum quality cars then watch them run. Usually the air is cool, the track is ultra sticky and the cars look stock but... run a bit quicker than they would have back in the day. 😉
There weren't many SS Cameros with the 396 that I saw around. Both cars were in exquisite condition. I wonder what a 1/2 mile would look like?
Oil, coolant, and chunks on the tarmac.
@@clevlandblock ahahahaha!
Sure with 4.10 gears with no overdrive both would be turning 6500rpm+ at 120mph gearing for a half mile would need to be less aggressive 3.23-3.55 unless you'd like to hold the 4.10s at 120mph screaming 6500rpm+ for another 2 blocks
@@gloriamaletta8667 hah, exactly! in my day, 4.10s are highway gears. I had 4.30s in a challenger that I drove on a 300 mile round trip to race. in my bee, I raced a couple of times in street tires and 4.88s. man, I was sure lookin for the finish those days. did I lift early? no.
This is the best race between two amazing cars. Keep them coming!
Loved it ! Keep up the great races so old timers such as myself can re live the good old days. One thing ,not all 396 SS Camaros came with power front disc brakes, I special ordered my '68 RS/SS convertible and it came with drum brakes all around.
More proof 396's punch above their weight.
Great match up!! Thx C & Z!!
Wow! That is two really hot cars, well tuned and fast as hell! I love it!
Thanks for posting!
Awesome , Thanks C&Z
Some very good racing
the only thing I wish is that the SS cars didn't have "Z28" stripes so often. Frankly, I've always liked the striping of both.
Great cars and great racing. Thank You
"There's no replacement for displacement".... Not always
Love the rear window decal....but, but, officer!🤣
2 beautiful cars being run HARD!! I love it!!
pretty even cars, Lighter weight Camaro has slight advantage. Motors put out about the same horsepower. Advantage Mopar on torque though.
Great matchup
Great video. Great information. Good times!:)
Nice! Both cool and fast.
a12 is my dream car. beautiful
The A12 Super Bee is my dream car. If I ever come across a lot of money. Its one of the 1st cars I would buy.
You always talk about weight & I know you know this. 100lbs equals a tenth of a second. So when you mention a 300 lbs that’s 3 blinks of an eye basically. I mean, I do little weight savings things too. But 100-200lbs really is a blink or two away…🤷🏻♂️. Keep up the great work & glad you’re back to being yourself…💪🏻😂💯🏁
Shows just how much weight plays a part. 300lbs makes a big difference.
Love the 396 vids!!
Hell yeah he's doing the narrating haven't seen one of these videos in a minute
Very nice
Today $28,154, can’t buy you a well equipped Toyota Corolla, or Honda Civic.. That same modernized Camaro with updated horsepower/performance is well over $50,000💰💰💰💰 The buying power for the middle class is gone😩🥺..Automotive greed along with real estate greed have sunk our buying power! Thanks for a great video and a dream😴
Chevy always kicks ass
What graduation between these two cars. I own a 69 Camaro but it doesn’t have anything close to that L 78 under the hood. I love all muscle cars especially the hot ones from the Mopar era. Mr. zebra keep them coming because these are absolutely fantastic racing and the way you put it out there.
The 440 6 pack was a monster but this 396 was under rated and was a big block that was more eager to rev than bigger cubic inch chevy engines like 427 or 454
Great video, of a great match up. Honest, and well informed descriptions of the competitors. The L78 396 was rated at 375 gross horsepower. Actual output was right at 425. The 440 Six Pack was rated at 390, and made about 400 gross horsepower. The A12 Mopar had the advantage in torque. The Camaro had the horsepower, and weight advantage. Both cars ran like they should, and ET right where U expected them. The MPH tell the story. The Camaro is simply making more power. Like I said, a great match up. Two talented drivers/ tuners.
Chevy power was hard to beat, and they were the best looking in anyone's book.
Bellisimo camaro !
That 300 lb. weight deficit is tough to overcome.
Groovy man
Someone explain to me please how you have a better ET but lose the race?
@@19580822 Ahhhhhh that makes much more sense now. Thank ya👌
Yeah baby!!! Some of the pinnacle n muscle cars. This race back n 69/70 woulda drew 100-150 guys standing on knolls to watch.
Heck, even 2 6cylinders with a 3 speed on column woulda been fun....getty up go.
Very even cars sound good to. Better than two Teslas.
I'm a Mopar guy, but that Camaro is very impressive.
The power to weight ratio on both is almost identical. Rear end gearing is the same. It came down to reaction time. The Camaro might have a slight aerodynamic advantage. If the Mopar could shed some weight it would have won.
Nice sleds. I like the Chrysler
I'd run both with my 2008 Durango 5.7. I bottom the speedometer at 3000rpm.. Too scared to go 5k.
Camaro has the weight advantage but it just comes down to the driver's reaction time who ever gets the light first wins
Very close races! In the quarter mile I feel the 396 powered Camaro is slightly faster because of it's take off but the 440 powered Super Bee definetly catches up and if it was longer than a quarter mile I believe the 440 Super Bee would spank the Camaro.
The Camaro had your MOPAR covered by about 3 mph on every run. The Bee wasn’t catching up.
I disagree. Both had about 4.1 gears. So beyond a quarter mile it would be a matter of which engine could rev higher. The Chevy 396 has a shorter stroke and has the advantage in top end revs.
B E A U T I F U L
So reaction times taken out of the equation the Camaro went 3 for 3
The driver of the super Bee weighs 12 lb?
You all know,it seems like ive seen alot of l78 Camaro's with the fender stripes rather than the RS Z28 rally stripes on a 396 SS!! I know you can get them both types of stripes,or even no stripes numbers matching but most 396's in count do seem to have the side stripes on them!! But,i do love these RS Z28 top rally stripes alot more on the 60's Camaro's!! I like the L48 350 Camaro SS,but people, that's just me!! 396 is too strong in a Camaro,i think the Camaro will probably win becayse of the 4:10 gear!!...🇺🇲🇺🇲
Thats a sweet road runner, but he’s lucky the camaro didn’t have a 427.
The “396” is really a 402
i wanna see a 71 demon 340 on the strip
Both cars tweaked to perfection, looks like advantage Camaro in the power to weight category so the reaction time was critical for the mopar. Hard to consistently put out .03 reaction times.
That 300 pounds difference was too much. Maybe if the driver was racehorse jockey size•••
Didnt know that about the L78 being in the Corvette earlier and rated 425hp! Says a lot. I'm amazed that they can get that power to the ground with those skinny tires.
I doubt that either of these cars were factory stock. :(
Cut that tree and cheat like Hell. Rules say, "...stock appearing"
Wich car is cooler? I would own either. Gotta admit , it's all about preference though.
Wow, impressive. Another 50 years will go by and they’ll be running 11 flat….
Chrysler put all their eggs in one basket, the king Kong Hemi, and it still dominates today. Even chevrolet and ford have slapped their name on all the top fuel and funny cars.
I have always loved Chrysler cars from the muscle car era, but the company failed to develop a well thought out, lightweight, "A" body car with a big-block engine. They shoehorned big blocks into Darts and Barracudas, but those cars were pigs to drive, and they were not exceptionally quick in stock form. The "end of the era," Cudas and Challengers were almost as heavy as Chrysler's mid-sized cars had been. It was a market that Chrysler missed. They probably didn't have the money to develop the platforms they needed to be competitive in the compact/big block class.
Like the match-ups, but miss your humourous soundtracks.
One on the left is THE beast......... It's a MOPAR so ya
LS 454 SS should smoke both these cars
