- This journey starts at Lady Anne's place of birth, Skipton Castle and finishes at the castle where she died near Penrith. A 100 mile journey which takes us through the Dales and Moorlands of Yorkshire and Cumbria.

I love your videos. You show the landscape around you so clearly and share what you know about the local history. One request: It would be great to know what month you are hiking. For people who aren’t familiar with what the UK looks like through the seasons, the month you are hiking would be nice information to have.

Nice one Nigel. I was right there with you on the trail, and certainly noticing the jumps in distance between some of the shots. I missed seeing some of the scenery (just after leaving Askrigg, for example, near the waterfall, and in the last video, the dramatic scenery after Buckden as you ascend to the moors again), but it certainly brings back the memories. I certainly don't remember all of that bracken though - perhaps I've blocked out some of the bad parts, although I'll be interested in seeing how you fare with the huge muddy section near the duck pond after leaving Appleby in the next video.
Thanks for your company Ryk. Apologies for the jumps in distances, it's the challenge I have in the quality of clips collected along the trail. Sometimes, like at the waterfall, the weather does not help or I think the quality of my videography is not sufficient. A constant challenge on the trail of balancing progress versus time recording, always learning how to improve and your feedback is appreciated. Not sure I recall a duckpond, but you will see I do get lost fairly early on in the next video!

Just your quiet enjoyment of walking, it's so enjoyable to watch. Have liked the brass accompaniment to the villages you filmed, the mix of cows and encounters with Lady Anne's impressive work. The final scene has you apparently camped under a really bright light though - so hard to sleep in an illuminated tent!
Thanks Catherine, I do appreciate your insightful observations and comments. I think the camera is working hard to bring in the available light, which then makes the lamp light appear brighter than it actually is in real life. Certainly did not stop me falling a sleep, but that might have been the miles in my legs :) Cheers, Nigel

Yes autumn and winter obviously tends to be challenging from a through hiking perspective, I therefore tend to do a few more reviews and shorter trails. I’ve started planning next years hikes but a bit like yourself nothing planned for winter and tend to do day hikes. That said I’m thinking maybe a multi day walk, hopping between youth hostels might be something good to organise.
Ah, as it happens just doing a trail review for the Cumbria Way, which has a number of YHA's along the way, that video will be published on 17th Oct. Would be great if you could let me know if you manage to piece something else together. Cheers
Yeh will do. I’ve just done part of the tour of the Lake District and loved being in the lakes again so the Cumbrian way might be an idea, though I’m thinking maybe something closer to home in the south west. One thing I would like your opinion on is winter footwear, I’ve switched to trail runners and far prefer them but they are not always ideal, when it is really cold and wet. really don’t want to go back to boots but not sure I have a choice?
With you being based in the SW the trails that come to mind that I have done and videoed would include the Two Moors and possibly a bit further afield The Cotswold Way, however would not be surprised if you have have done these and I'm not sure how well they are served by hostels. Interestingly, I'm just going through the same thought process on boots myself. I use trail runners or the boot version of that brand durning the three seasons but even the best gortex trail (runner) boots can't cope during winter. I don't want to buy some heavyweight stiff boot that I only use a few times each year. Therefore, when I get chance I'm trying to research the subject but at the moment feel a long way from making a decision. Will let you know if I do press the buy button!
