Llyn Peninsula Coastal Path #3 - Hike and wild camp on the Wales Coast Path - Porthmadog to Bangor
On this hike I aim to complete the 110 miles of the Llyn Peninsula Costal Path, which is part of the Wales Coast Path. The whole adventure was completed in five days with a total ascent of circa 9,000 feet.

In this video I start near Trevor on day five with the eventual aim of totally completing the walk on Bangor Pier. This will be quite a challenge as it involves a total of 30 miles and significant sections of road walking.
On this hike I had met quite a number of hikers travelling in the opposite direction to me. Often they would tell me the horror I had ahead, of walking the A499 from Trevor to Dinas Dinelle.
To ensure I was well prepared, I was the first customer at 7am in the local village shop. Stocking up on water and other supplies to keep me going the predicted distance of 10 miles.
Whilst the road we are following is a major A road around the peninsular, the actual tarmac we are walking on is the old road with bits of links from cycle paths. From my calculations the road was actually more like 11-12 kilometres and it took just two and a half hours. Luckily the weather was good as well, so I believe I was lucky in my experience.
When we reached Dinas Dinelle we stopped for a coffee break and a second breakfast, which had been my promise to myself to keep spirits high. From here we moved inland following the estuary with the island of Anglesey edging nearer as we made more progress north.
We had been warned by fellow hikers and confirmation received from locals that the swing bridge at Caernarfon was shut and this was causing a two mile diversion. Therefore, I headed further inland to pick up the route of a steam train. Therefore, arriving at alongside Caernarfon Station and spotting a steam train refuelling. From the station bridge we had a great view of the castle and then we headed further into town to get a close up of the castle walls.
As we approach the sea side of the castle we discovered that the swing bridge was actually open!
Heading out of Caernarfon we now headed to Bangor Pier our final finish point and only nine miles remaining to complete our adventure. The first four miles was mainly tarmac again as it was cycle pathway. However, this followed by a delightful woods which had a number of birdwatching stages which we used as a place for a welcome rest.
The remaining walk had us discovering a ground level view of the two distinctive bridges that had been assisting visitors for at least 150 years, to travel from NW Wales to Anglesey mainly to catch the ferry to Ireland from the port of Holyhead.
If you have enjoyed this series of videos and are considering the hike yourself, I will be publishing a trail review which should give you sufficient information for you to complete this adventure.

Nigel, thanks for the third installment. Not sure that this day was worthwhile, but there were moments of interest/scenery. I don't mind shorter sections of road walking, but dislike excessive stretches of it as there are usually no views, safety is compromised, and it can be hard on the feet/legs. Still, congrats on completing another 5-day section of the Coast Path. I'm awaiting your next adventure with interest.
Thanks Ryk, totally agree with your comment. Always the next adventure awaits, which keeps me 😁, cheers
Hi Nigel nice video😊😊
Thanks Roy, appreciate the watch and comment 😁👍🏼
Excellent film as always Nigel. Where next? I'm heading for Chepstow in the morning to start Offa's Dyke. 👍🦆
That is excellent, have a great time, I really enjoyed my time there, I hope you do to, interested how you get on. Meanwhile, I'm over the water in Ireland! Cheers
@@AmblingTrails You certainly get around Nigel. If you are ever in Eryri/Snowdonia, give me a shout. You would be very welcome here at Llyn Crafnant. Enjoy Ireland 👍
Thanks Paul, I will certainly keep that in mind.
U missed out the best bit; the big waterfall!
Apologies, there was a reason at the time, but I can't recall now. Still think it's a great park though, visited many since and I would still claim it's the best in England. Thanks for watching.
The fish pass @ Hoghton is great; there is also one @ Walton-le-dale; but Roach Bridge weir and Salmesbury bottoms weir still exist in between and until they are removed or fish passes are installed they present impossible barriers to fish migration and the connectivity; If these are somehow overcome we might once again see Salmon, Sea trout, eels, and who knows, Shad and Sturgeon venturing up the River once more.
That's really interesting info and I certainly appreciate you sharing this insight. At the time, I do recall thinking that Darwen River is under appreciated and that more could be done but I did not really understand the scale of possibilities. Cheers
@@AmblingTrails Just watching your epic Lycian Way video. Back in the 1990's I holidayed in Fetiyhe; What a region! Olu Deniz; Dalaman River; Turtle beach and the amazing rock cut tombs... They remain vivid and magical in my memory.
Hi Matt, glad you enjoyed this epic journey and good to know it helped to reawaken your memories of the region, it's certainly magical!
That's my backyard; Great isn't it?
Yes that's impressive! Thanks for watching and I enjoyed the comment.
Nice views
Thanks, appreciate the watch and comment
I did this in a day recently. I wondered what the blue cable/pipe was at around 23:00!
I remember thinking the same myself! I managed to work out the local farmer was running water from the well downhill for an animal trough. Well done on the day completion. Thanks for the watch and I appreciate the interest. Cheers
There are some breathtakingly beautiful views here, but the path seems to be in a state of flux and closed in places - quite tricky.
Hi Catherine, great to hear from you. Yes it was quite challenging at times but I’ve learnt that tends to be the way with coastal paths. The coastal part of the Cleveland Way had similar challenges. Thanks for the comment and watch. Cheers
fantastic video and great information about the route too. looking at doing this hike myself along with the coast to coast
Great combination of trails, best of luck and have a great adventure 👍🏼
Enjoyed that Nigel, I’m familiar with a few of the areas so was nice to see them on film and have stayed at the little campsite at Sandy haven ( not shown ) before the little concrete bridge many times.
Glad you enjoyed revisiting the PCP and thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge. Cheers
@@AmblingTrails have you read the books by through hiker Keith foskett ? Worth a read , he does the PCT and Appalachian in the states and Camino de Santiago in spain.

Great video and well planned route with the boats and trains, the vocal music worked so well in the church. Much enjoyed.
Glad you enjoyed it, there was lots of planning but worth the effort , appreciate the comment. Cheers
Hi Nice walk and views 😊😊😊
Glad you enjoyed the views
Brilliant, Nigel. Great scenery. Looking forward to part 3. I wish these trails were less than a day's travel from where I live, but next year I'll be living the dream again walking these U.K. trails. I am a bit worried though - I might not be able to keep up with you with the speed at which you pack your tent (0:20) and head off in the morning 🤣!
I’m sure with a bit of practice we will get you up to speed! 😉. Thanks for the watch and I do appreciate the comment. Cheers
For seeing your earlier videos to now it’s so wonderful to see your growth! What a brilliant channel and an even better video. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
Thanks, appreciate the feedback. 😁
Enjoying your journey
Thanks 😁👍🏼⛺️
Absolutely gorgeous.
Thanks, appreciate that 😁👍🏼
This video is perfect for breakfast tv. When did you actually visit the Pembrokeshire Path because I am not sure wild camping still exists...?
Thanks, I was there virtually two years ago and recently completed another part of the Wales Coastal Path around the Llyn Peninsula. Appreciate the watch and comment. Cheers
My main criticism of the Hornet, and the reason I sold mine, is that it is too easy for water to fall inside the inner when unzipping a wet flysheet. Otherwise as a stormproof tent, it is really decent.
Thanks for your thoughts, appreciate the watch and comment 😁👍🏼⛺️
Cracking good cheese, Gromit, er, I mean, a corker of a video Nigel. Great scenery, great variety of terrain, not too many humans, and variable weather. What more could one want? To be there in person methinks.
Thanks Ryk, near perfection it was indeed. Cheers
Loving the beaches❤❤
Totally agree, they were really stunning!
I had the same issue with the Hiiker App with other trails as well. In the end I switched over to the OS maps app.
I think I might give that a try when my subscription runs out, thanks for the thought.
So far, I have only used the Hiiker app for recording hikes, and it sucks. After an update it will work for a week or two, then it can't seem to keep track of where I am at any given time. I did an experiment last week, walking the exact same 5km circular track 3 times. I interacted with the app in a different way on each circuit, and the end result was all over the map, and no 2 circuits mapped the same. The only time it recorded accurately was the circuit where I kept the app open and refreshed the map every minute or two.
@rykskelton2066 thanks for the info, agree it sucks and drains your battery too much.
How are you tracking your mileage Nigel? Is it on your watch? If so, what do you use? Cheers 👍😁
Yes, it is. Use a Garmin Fenix 6 solar. Had about 2 years no problems.
@@AmblingTrails thank you Nigel, I have been trying to make my mind up about which watch to get, hearing of your experience helps a lot. By the way, have a look at the Snowdonia Slate Trail. I think you would find it interesting, and it would bring you almost past my door at Llyn Crafnant. 👍😁
@paulhuggan-cammack2928 it’s on my radar, but so many trails to do. But if a cuppa is on offer I might make it 😉
@@AmblingTrails a cuppa would be no problem at all 😁👍
Hi, excellent video. You always pick interesting routes and places to go. Have you changed your phone for recording the videos? The quality is really good.
Stunning scenery here!
Thanks, glad you appreciated the vid. Cheers
Excellent stuff Nigel, the Llyn Peninsula is stunning, however, from my experience drinking water can be an issue. Enjoy! 👍😁
Thanks and yep water was a bit of a challenge but made sure I always set off with 3 litres, bit weighty but sure and safe. Cheers
So beautiful nature! Wish to be there!
Yes it is wonderful, thanks for the watch and comment.
I’m looking at walking this in August as a little shakedown hike of some new kit. One question for you. What’s the trail like for water sources? I always carry my filter but knowing where I can get water from is always a help in planning.
Hi Richard, great walk for testing kit. Same for me, always carry my filter, however on this walk I did not encounter any water I could filter. Pubs and cafes were my main sources, plus one ice cream van where I purchase a 500ml bottle. Do let me know if you do find any water that you can filter as good to share with the community. Hope you enjoy your hike, it’s certainly one of my favourites. Cheers
Interesting, thank you.
You're welcome and thanks for watching.
Have you tried doing a vid with just natural sounds instead of the monotonous music? There was no need for it with this vid. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.😁
As it happens, I agree! All part of the learning process, did the vid about two years ago and since that time I've done two more videos that cover what's in my various rucksacks, and neither of these have music. I do appreciate the feedback, and thanks for taking the time out to provide your thoughts. Cheers
Thanks for your fantastic videos. But please pay attention to the weight of your backpack. It might cause problems to your spine if it's too heavy.
Thanks, appreciate the advice and I’m always trying to think of ways of reducing my backpack weight.
After watching this, now I don't know if I want the Hornet or the Dragonfly
I have to admit, it would be a close call. Strangely, I’m considering get the Dragonfly for a friend, so either way, I think your fairly safe. Cheers
@@AmblingTrails I got this message literally after I bought the Dragonfly (literally less than 20 minutes ago). Ultimately it was the vestibule space I wanted.
@@AmblingTrails I was considering a Hornet 2p or a Dragonfly 1p, but went with the Dragonfly purely for the large vestibule which I think will suit my needs more.
@Obi-Wan_Pierogi Good to know, thanks for sharing.

I have two stones, I'm keeping them.
😁 understand that, having carried them all that way, you do become rather attached to them!
I’ve just found your channel and loving it so far! I love how you take the time to film yourself doing bits of the walk, no matter what the weather is, when I think most people would just feel like cracking on when there are so many miles to go! I would like to know more about the camping at the end of each day. Do you always wild camp?
Thanks for taking the time to comment, really appreciate that. In terms of wild camping, I would say mainly. If at the end of day a small campsite is to hand, I will use it, mainly to get a shower and possibly recharge my batteries for videoing. Also, happy to use a YHA under similar circumstances if they’re not fully booked. Now you’ve got me thinking, I would say 1:5 nights on average not wild camping but varies greatly depending on the route. Cheers
I use a trekking pole or long stick with a guy line to make a proper porch out of one door.
Yep, that is certainly what I do now! Thanks for the comment and watch.

Thanks, really appreciate the comment, always interested in different perspectives on the same trail. Actually did this January 2024, I bet May was very different! Cheers
That was a very nice walk and a change-up from many that I've seen that are walking one trail. I liked that you were on two and took various modes of transportation to get you to your next starting point. I appreciated the mention of the cost of the first boat. Could you share that of the Windermere boat and the train? Loved seeing the inside of the Priory as well. Lovely. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Apologies I had meant to mention the cost of the other modes of transport, however the cost in 2024 for the trip I did which was obviously a single is as follows: Pooley Bridge to Howtown £10 - Ferry on Ulleswater Ambleside to Lakeside £18 - Ferry on Windermere Lakeside to Haverthwaite £6.50 - Steam Train Hope that helps and I do hope you get opportunity to explore these options. Happy to answer any other queries you might have. Cheers, Nigel

Really really enjoyed this one!

Nigel, Certainly an interesting journey, especially with the different ways to get from A to B. I was surprised that it was cold enough for you to mention it (and I noticed those finger-less gloves), but I've never been in the U.K. during April/May, so what do I know. This trail touched on a few places I've been, so there was a little familiarity, but it's probably not a trail that I'll get to do, so it was nice to experience it through your lens. Another surprise for me was the lack of crowds at Bowness. Cheers, Ryk.
Yes, I've certainly been caught out in the Lakes previously in late April with snow! I was carrying gloves and suntan lotion and I used both, crazy weather. I think the lack of crowds generally was a result of the surprising weather, it had forecast rain, so I was very lucky overall and certainly helped the videography. Glad you enjoyed the virtual journey. Cheers, Nigel
What an absolutely brilliant adventure through the lakes! Easy going with stunning scenery and plenty of alternative routes depending on how you feel. The use of the boats is my particular favourite. Once again you've inspired me for another route. I will be following in your foot steps soon. Thank you so much for your video and ideas.
Glad you enjoyed it and as you said lots of alternative routes depending on how the inspiration takes you. Have a great lakeland adventure and thanks for watching.

Pleasant ways to travel into the Lakes from either end, and another walk you have done that I now want to do. The words "going over the fells to Ambleside" have to be some of the happiest imaginable. Thanks for another good one.
Thanks Catherine, glad you enjoyed the video and glad you appreciate the inspiration for an alternative Lakeland travel. Cheers, Nigel
