    I'm really glad to see I'm not the Arduino/Raspberry Pi nerd out here building mods for his Miata, I've been working on a similar arduino based gauge project all winter.

    Fun stuff, sorry I missed the live broadcast. One problem for those of us who race our Miata's is if we throw the alternator belt (it happens), the water pump is the same belt and overheats the engine. Would be great to have a gauge/warning light to show no water circulation. The challenge is since the water is not flowing, might not get to the sensor in time.

    • @TargaMiata
      @TargaMiata Před 3 lety

      When you lose your alternator/water pump belt, you get a charging light. You can treat that as a "lost belt" light.

    Get some tachometer needles reamed out to the diameter of the stepper shafts. As an electrical engineer building my own RasPi based digital dash for my NB, it all made sense to me.

    • @TargaMiata
      @TargaMiata Před 3 lety

      The differences are really small. According to my measurements, the speedo has a shaft that is 1.01mm. The stepper is 0.98mm, and that difference is enough to allow a bit of slip. I'm not sure I can manage that level of precision when reaming it out. One solution would be to see if I can find some needles from the original GM application of these motors. Or a small dab of superglue.
      I am thinking I might play more with the air core gauges, though. They should be faster overall.

      @@Dystyrbed I just realized that if I heat up the tach needle, I might be able to get enough deformation to get a perfect fit. I'll try that tonight. Thanks for making me think about it again :)

      @@TargaMiata Sure thing. Getting the plastic soft could work, yeah, and wouldn't be permanent or risk chemical melting like superglue. I've heard stories of cyanoacrylate and seen acetone applied to Delrin.

      @Dystyrbed Před 3 lety

      Oh, have you put any thought into servos vs steppers? Or just used steppers because they're readily available and cheap? Where did the GM steppers come from for those of us interested in sourcing them?

      Keith's street Miata has Smiths style gauge faces, a real Smiths boost gauge and clock along with Lucas push-pull switches. Look for the "Turbosmurf" tour on the FM channel.
      The LS1-powered MG in the background of this video has an electronically driven Smiths speedo to match all the other factory Smiths gauges.

    Could you use a after market ecu like megasquirt 3 , speeduino or me221 for the can signal ? So that normal people with out v8 in their mx5 could run something thing like this. Cant wait until you release the code will definitely be looking to implement this in my car.

    • @TargaMiata
      @TargaMiata Před 3 lety

      You could certainly use a different ECU. If you set it up to use the stock tach signal, then any ECU could run it. But this was my own personal project for my own car, so I decided to take advantage of the data available to me.

      @@dilberadam We're happy to answer them here!
      Immediately on top of the Pi is a CAN hat (a PICAN3, which includes a power supply so it can run the Pi). That gives me access to the data being broadcast through the car's internal network. NA/NB Miatas don't have a CAN network but this one does due to the V8 engine. That's a bit of a cheat on my part, but I'm building it for my use and not for everyone :) Then I just listen for the data that interests me such as the RPM signal or the coolant temp and use it for the gauges.
      On top of that is a motor controller hat from Adafruit to run the stepper motors.

  • @driftaw
    @driftaw Před 3 lety

    I did a little arduino project to add sequential lights in the cluster of my NB, and found that the tach signal was very noisy, so I had to come up with a strategy to get an RPM value.
    Did you experience anything like that, or would know what's going on with that signal? I would love to clean that up.

    • @TargaMiata
      @TargaMiata Před 3 lety +1

      I cheated and went straight to the CAN signal, which is broadcast every 12.5 ms. Nice and clean.
