What I liked about this segment was how totally realistic it was. You ran into ALL of the problems most homeowners do, down to not having the right drill bit size or having to redo the numbers because the boss was not satisfied. Most segments on CZcams would make projects like these look easy and trouble free. Btw. Maybe Ray or Jay will refinish that door for you. We all know it’s going to have to be done.

One note, from a security point of view... the new latch plate for the deadbolt has 4 screw holes instead of 2. The larger holes accept lag screws that screw through the jamb and into the studs for more holding power, if someone were to try and kick in the door.

Regardless of where you put the numbers, make sure that they can be seen from the street so police, emergency personnel, and delivery drivers can find the house. Having lights illuminate them is also helpful at night, as I'm a first responder and also a retired delivery driver. I've gone past houses because the numbers weren't visible or even there.

I thought where you popped the numbers in made perfect sense, seeing as the backdrop is white and the most contrasting color to help make them more visible. That, and the corner board gives it an enclosed feeling, whereas if it were on the siding it would feel like the numbers are floating aimlessly (if that makes sense). Siding's slanted like you pointed out, too. That'd bug me for days.
Your house looks awesome, by the way! 👍

  • @ONLYGOODleftistisaDEADleftist

Have you ever tried (varying percentages of) diluted oxalic acid to lighten wood surfaces? Mostly, I use oxalic acid when repairing wood stains on antique furniture, but I used it once for this same purpose, as I wanted to maintain a gray, weathered, coastal-themed, beach-type patina on an exterior door surface on a patio and deck. It did not preclude me having to sand ( the previously covered/un-weathered portions of) the door surface to remove the finish present when new, but it does help alleviate the "two-toned" part of this door problem. As always, it's best to test the process before using it on your project. I used the interior parts of the door where the old door lock set mechanisms had been attached to test my percentage of dilution. It was not immaculately perfect, but it was extremely close. After a couple of months, you couldn't tell the door lock set had been replaced. If you use oxalic acid often, you develop a feel for the dilution percentages. Of course, if you are planning to refinish the entire door, after the lock set replacement, this is a moot.

Hey Eric, if you are looking for a good easy doorbell I recommend a run. They add security with the camera which is nice and you can check it on your phone etc. but the best part is you can get battery powered ones that you charge maybe every six months (it’ll let you know when it’s low on your phone) and you can install additional speakers in plugs throughout your hose. In summary, very simple, install, just need a drill and to screw in the actual doorbell and then just plug in the speaker inside and a little pairing on your phone. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

If that door has a bit of a soap smell, or just unpleasant smell, it's likely Spanish Cedar. They're an economical and really good alternative to your typical exterior project woods. Spanish Cedar does lighten exactly like it is in the video. It's also really nice to cut and to carve as well! Great for cigar boxes.

They make these spacer gromet/washer things that they often include in those kits for tv or computer wall mounts. Its because the back of monitors and the surfaces they mount on are both not always flat. You have to mix, match and cut them to deal with all sorts of irrregularities. However due to accumulation in IT work we often wind up with one gallon buckets worth of spares of that sort of part. I find that they are useful the sort of situation you encountered with those numbers. I have used them to level out plant holders and external light fixtures retro mounted onto not flat siding.

My opinion on the numbers placement: I would want the maximum contrast between background and number so that the numbers were easy to see. So the choices would be: mount them to a white board that you put on (or recess into) the siding, or place them on the corner trim. I would not put black numbers on a light grey wall as in some lighting conditions they could be hard to see, particularly if a person were in a vehicle and driving and looking for the numbers both (as compared to having a second person in the vehicle looking for the numbers).
