  • At 16 my dream to build a Gypsy Caravan became a reality as I began construction. I incorporated the sloping walls of the Reading Wagon with the Ledge Wagon style and then went with the finishing touches of the more natural feeling Shepherds Hut. Height vs width and the resulting look was an important factor. At it's highest point, the caravan is 7'6" and the bed across the back is set at a height on the sloping walls to give just over 6' in length. A kind neighbour donated the trailer, another gave me the recycled insulation and aside from the plywood and some of the 2x4's, most of the other material was left over from other building projects or from the re-store. My mom built the coloured lead windows and door, showed me how to use the power tools and worked through the construction with me.

    The bed was placed up high enough on the sloping walls to create the length needed for a twin sized mattress. The standing floor area is 55" long x 51" wide (this is infringed on a bit by the seat boxes. The bottom of the caravan is 8' x 4' 9" . The porch sticks out another 14".

    Super job! Any tips you would like to add on how you put up the curved Baltic birch ply on the ceilings? Looks like it would have been a pain without some sort of jig or form. Also like the Sweet Peas. In my opinion the best smelling and most under-rated flower of all time.

    • @rainyisland1
      @rainyisland1  Před 7 lety +4

      I used door skins for the ceilings. There is a seem down the middle, so the curve is not as bad as it looks.... just bent it slowly. It was actually harder to bend the trim which follows the curve of the beams and covers the gap between the door skins and beam.. I broke quite a few pieces of trim doing this : -)

    Great Caravan. How much $ did it cost and how many hrs to build? I want to build one n need to know, if u don't mind?

    • @rainyisland1
      @rainyisland1  Před 7 lety +4

      It's pretty hard for me to estimate the cost because so much of the material was recycled.. The trailer was a bit of a wreck when I got it, but a friend helped me weld it and I spent time sanding and refinishing it. The insulation came out of a tear down. The side windows were recycled, so were the cupboard doors. The cushions were cut from an old foam bed and recovered. The pine interior was left over from another project. The flooring came from the recycle store. My mom built the stained glass windows as a present for me. The door was built from left over flooring. I shopped around and found a great price on the plywood. Only things I can think of that I paid full price for were some of the 2 x 4's, roofing and hardware. I worked on it weekends and after school when not busy with other things and my mom helped. It took 10 months.

If you have any measurements you'd like to share, please PM me. I'm working on a wagon that will be extended 2 feet above the ledge with a folding Queen Mattress. The trailer is a 5' X 8'. I am putting a "privacy closet" at the back (for my wife). Any info on your build would be great. Nice work
