    GREAT review mate. I already got the M50x's and wanted to go a step further and get my first true audiophile cans. Saw a lot of reviews and videos on the matter, especially surrounding HD600s/HD6XXs/R70x's. After watching this video, I was convinced. Finally found a good deal and bit the bullet.
    The amount of comfort and that these provide is incredible. I'm especially sensitive and picky about head squeezes and long-listening sessions, and the wing support system is just...heaven. It's amazing how much not having something touch the top of the head helps during long sessions. It seems like such a simple and unnecessary thing from an outside perspective, but WOW is it good.
    Going on to the sound, I still need to buy an amp but hearing it straight from my laptop, the difference in how much more detail you can hear between the M50x's and these is insane. When you pump up the volume, it doesn't get louder and more harsh, just more...detailed and richer? It's a surreal feeling because I've never experienced anything like it. Even with just a laptop, I was not expecting it to be such a major difference. Really like the tuning as well. These are on the warmer side, and a bit more bass-heavy compared to the HD600 series, (or so I've seen everywhere). Being a basshead and leaning more towards non-vocal music, it's perfect for my usual tastes.
    The only thing I'm still worried about is the build lasting long. The M50x's feel pretty tanky, but R70x's feel a bit flimsy, I guess due to build materials and just how light they are. But I guess seeing as the Geoff fella has had the same pair for years, is a bit of a consolation.
    Overall, really happy with this purchase. Awesome video!

      AMAZING sound aside regarding the build, honestly when i first got them i babied the sh*t out of them because they felt "flimsy" / super lightweight. but at this point i feel the only thing that could potentially cause any significant harm would be straight up water damage.
      once again welcome to the family 🙏🏼♥️ i'm so glad this video was able to help you finally make that leap of faith!

    Yes I agree that r70x is a better HD650 for me. HD650 sounds a little muddy to me due to the bass being solid and seems to cover the finer details of the music. R70X while bassy it is airy, leaving space for the other details of the music to show too.

    I love my pair too! I also use a HD600.
    Tbh, despite the HD600s legendary status, i like the r70x more. In fact it's such an easy listen that my girlfriend has snatched them from me for her pc setup.
    Much better than HD600 for movies and pc gaming. Much less clamp force. And with brainwavz xl velour pads, you get the comfiest, lightest audiophile headphone possible. Even if the large pads mess with the frequency response.
    The added bass really help with immersion over the HD600 even if you lose a tiny bit of treble advantage on the HD600

    You’re the only one who answered all my questions regarding this headphone as someone who doesn’t currently own an amp and plans to invest more in the headphones first rather than doing both because I don’t have enough funds l at the moment. I feel relieved that my laptop will be able to power these cans even more than the famously easy to drive HD650 also As someone who loves bass and doesn’t listen to a lot of music with vocals, these look the most convincing when compared to the HD650 or even any headphone in this price range, as there are no significant drawbacks, in my opinion at least.

    My brother lives in Japan and I asked him to bring me a pair of these when he comes to visit. They're ridiculously cheaper over there, like less than half of what you would pay here in Brazil. Though I have to say I'm kinda surprised to hear you say they can be driven by a smartphone. I thought with such a high impedance they would be impossible to drive without an amp!

    Hey man I really enjoy your insight and perspective! I have the 650’s and the LCD X (2021)… The LCD X is great but too heavy most of the time but the detail is crazy! I’ve used the 650 for the past 5 years but I’ve always wanted more detail in the high end. Do the ATH-R70X offer a bit more high end detail? The bass would be a great addition too lol!

      i would describe the ath-r70x top end as clear and balanced but begins to relax as we enter the "air" region (30k-40k upwards).
      the highs are not as snappy/quick compared to beyer dt series, but not subdued like hd650's either...it's somewhere in between, very pleasant to work on for many hours without the "glare" effect some brighter headphones have after listening for awhile.

    would be interested in your thoughts between the r70x and sundara, as theyre in the same price bracket. I think there were some reviews of the r70x regarding the lesser detail/resolving ability in comparison (specifically theHeadphoneShow) and was curious as to your thoughts on that as well.

    • @cavemanmasters
      @cavemanmasters  Před 2 lety +3

      yooo!! thank you for taking the time to check out the video, i really appreciate it fam. 👺🙏🏼💯
      i've desperately been trying to get my hands on a pair of sundara's from my local shop but still no luck yet...
      from what i've been reading and watching online, i would say the sundara is a tone beast. the recent tuning makes it air on the audeze tuning (more bass) which is a step away from their usual midrange focus.
      this means that it would be more on the darker/warmer/deeper spectrum compared to the r70x. BUT this might be a good thing if you're just looking to listen/consume media.
      and final note (but most important) sundara and r70x are both fundamentally different headphone types, sundara is planar and ath-r70x is dynamic/coil drivers.
      this means that the differences in the way they present low end will be night and day difference, planar is more "pluck" like speaker cones flexing. dynamic coil drivers will have bass "slam" (think dr dre cans)
      all frequencies sitting on top of bass will shift and move according to what's going on in the low end, so changing the low end presentation will affect the entire frequency spectrum.
      so even if both headphones are similar in sound profile, i would have both anyway for this single reason.
      sorry for tldr!! hope this helps my friend and happy new year 🥳

      R70x and Sundara sound very different. Details mean nothing if you don't like how the Sundara sound. I had the Sundara, and it's big brother, the Arya Stealth. Hated them both. If you are not sensitive to treble, you might love them.

  • @llysender

    Nice personally the r70x was my first "audiophile" headphone and has shaped what i look for in headphones including vocal texture and grit that the hd600 simply cannot provide since they are designed for true audiophile listening and coloured for smoothness.
    Just curous how much fine detail is actually needed for mixing. Since i come from a consumer and hobbist recorder of my instruments i found the r70x satifactory. Is going with lcd x making it easier to clean up the background noise?

    • @cavemanmasters
      @cavemanmasters  Před 2 lety +3

      there is no greater love than finding my fellow r70x brothers and sisters, thank you for taking the time to comment and share your valuable experiences of this legendary yet often overlooked headphone 🙏🏼♥️
      with regards to producing/recording/mixing with r70x's, i have found it's strength in genres with less elements and more "bigger" building blocks (hip hop, edm, pop, etc)
      but with more layered genres (rock, classical, acoustic, etc) i have found the hd650's forward midrange and intimate soundstage helps me layer things from background to foreground easier (no idea what sits above or below tho)
      but when it comes to stacking things on top of each other (frequencies wise) the r70x has a more neutral and extended response so it definitely easier to locate on the spectrum where the noise is (low cycle hum/rumble vs hiss/buzz)
      alot of noise issues will have to do with the recording signal chain itself and impeccable gain staging that only comes with more practise over the years.
      hope that helps my r70x fam!! 👺♥️ please feel free to check out my other videos on recording/mixing or ask any additional questions, i appreciate you!

I've had a pair of audiotechnica M50x's for years which I absolutely love, but some people have recommended open back headphones for mixing and mastering so I decided to give it a try. If you have any experience with M50x, can you comment on any similarities/differences between the M50x and R70x?

      i always have at least 3-4 ath-M50X's around me for my clients when i record! they are very reliable and their tuning is very inspiring for creatives (definitely more "fun" than "flat" haha)
      the main diff between m50x and r70x is that one is open-back and the other is closed-back. therefore it is not possible to make a meaningful comparison between them, it'll be like comparing an apple to a pear. both fill completely different niches and uses and are both equally strong in their lanes.
      similar to your experience, my transition from m50x to r70x was waaaaaaaay easier than going from m50x to hd650 hands down.
      to my ears...m50x are edgier and more forward feeling (abrasive/harsh at times due to closed-back headphone limitations) whereas the r70x presents frequencies in a more laid back and relaxed fashion.

      no worries! really appreciate you taking the time to drop a comment as well =) i would say beyers will always win at speed, they have incredible detail and high frequency extension.
      it really boils down to usage and context, i can't really get a sense of scale/scaling with high frequencies. a lot of scaling comes from the low mids and bass region, which is what the ath-r70x's are good for.
      for detail oriented stuff like gaming, beyers are a top pick as they can match the incredibly tight refresh rates of gaming monitors down to the nanosecond.

      @@REZANOV It's always subjective but majority ppl do find r70x better than 560s. R70x competes with sundara and hd6x0s.
      The treble on r70x is not bright, that might be one of the reasons you don't find it that detailed. But that too me is its advantage over other phones that I have tried. It is quite forgiving to bad metal recordings.
      560s is one of the most detailed hp in the sub 500$ price bracket.But bcoz of that it sounds too analytical to me.In my testing, I found it to be really thin as well.
      I would say this, from my experience. If A) you aren't sensitive to treble B) you don't listen to metal music.

    How do you think these compare to the LCD-X sound-wise?

    • @cavemanmasters
      @cavemanmasters  Před 2 lety +1

      hey man! appreciate you taking the time to comment =) sound signature wise they are very similar (emphasis on the low mids) but both present bass very differently...one has slam and speed (dynamic coil driver) and one has a "pluck" kind of sound, more similar to speakers flexing (planars).
      hope that helps! 👺🙏🏼 feel free to ask any additionam questions you may have.

      the r70x will definitely have more low mid/upper bass definition and scaling (60hz - 120hz region), but not sub bass (60hz - below).

      yezzir 👺⚡️ these are excellent for mixing as they capture low mid/upper bass frequencies that a lot of other headphones are missing in this price range. this frequency area is crucial for getting wide/big sounding mixes!!

    How they compare to shure 1840 ,1440 ?

    • @cavemanmasters
      @cavemanmasters  Před rokem

      aye fam 👺♥️ i have found shure headphones to constantly lean toward the bass-heavy side of things and are too smooth sounding, which is good for their own purposes (dj'ing, watching movies, etc) but for referencing and checking frequencies too much bass content/response tends to sacrifice a lot of detail as a trade-off.
      again, context is important and it always depends on what you are using them for. having both will be beneficial i am sure 🤓

      they are excellent for gaming, being open-back means they have a lot better stereo imaging than any closed-back headphone twice it's price.

    Having a 470ohm in 1k, 1100~1200 ohm in sub bass, I believe it should not work as it is "supposed to" when directly plugged into any phones or any laptops. Having enough volume and driving it to full extent is a different thing. Having such a high impedance, R70x must need and amp. It is harder to drive even more than the hd650(300ohm in 1k). Perhaps(not sure) r70x has higher sensitivity (db/mw) than hd650 so it could get louder easily, but that's just volume wise. Required volatge is way higher in r70x than hd650s. Again I'm not talking about how loud it can get(volume). I am talking about driving it fully as it is designed to by the engineers. Did you not notice any difference in sound resolution, detail, seperation, etc when plugged directly into phones, laptops, or through headphone amps?

    • @cavemanmasters
      @cavemanmasters  Před 2 lety +2

      wow thanks for taking the time my man, i appreciate it! 🙏🏼 i have an spl phonitor 2, i don't really detect much of a shift in tonality (aside from increased loudness/headroom, just slightly larger scaling and dynamics)...i found this to be the same when i plug my hd650 into laptop vs higher end solid state amps.
      hope that helps! 👺🤘🏼💯
      but with tube amps...that's a whole different equation, but i can't use them in my profession 😅

      @@cavemanmasters I see.. thanks for the reply.
      May I ask you a question?
      I just recently got r70x and I don't have an amp. I only have a 50$ usb portable dac(2vrms power) so tried r70x through it and it sounded not satifying especially the mid highs(high fret guitar sound , female vocal etc). Sounds like the detail or the clarity is just not there. Too smooth that I can't even feel the crispness of overdrived guitar(higher frets) or emotion of the vocal. And also they sound little too far or low volume relative to the bass freq.
      If I properly supply power to r70x, would this be solved? Because from what you are telling, there is not much of a difference with or w/o an amp. I really like the wide soundstage and the amount of bass but if this resolution, detail thing doesn't get better with amping, I doubt that r70x is just not enough for mixing every frequencys b/c it lacks detail in mid highs.
      Can this be solved by adjusting the EQ? or should I get the hd6xx(650)? Which one would you choose if you only had to pick one HP for mixing between r70x and hd6xx(650)? Sorry for my grammar, english is not my first language.

    • @cavemanmasters
      @cavemanmasters  Před 2 lety +4

      @@telecast712 don't worry my friend! your english is great, i understood what you're trying to say/ask perfectly =)
      these are very good questions, i will try to keep the answer as short as possible!
      with headphones under $1000 (to keep cost of parts low) the frequency range will be "band-limited" due to less expensive component quality/tolerance. because of this, the companies will have to choose within their limitations which frequencies to prioritize/scale (upper or lower mids usually...come is just all bass or all highs lol)
      regarding r70x vs. hd650, when it comes to tuning mids...hd650 is tuned for prioritizing the vocal range (upper mids) and not wide soundstage (vocal attention is usually in the center).
      r70x is tuned to prioritize/scale low mids (vocal lower chest/upper bass region) and therefore you will get a more "wide" feeling soundstage because as you go lower frequencies the more they will lose their directionality...but you will benefit from "bigger footprint effect" (things feel meatier and "heavier", almost like an octave effect).
      hope that helps! keep the questions coming my man, sending love from canada 🇨🇦👺♥️
