Well which one? The 600's or the R70's?
+TeamRetroWorld No

+Z Reviews god, i love you.
That's not how it works bro. He tells you the differences, and then you can dedice for yourself, which one sounds more appealing
We need to do a public protest against headphones that don't fit around human ears.
yea these are even smaller than ad1000x, these are on ears.
nah, round earcups just look the best.
So I got these instead of the HD600 for two reasons. The first is that I tried these at a local music store and was blown away. The second is that they were less expensive than the HD600. The clamp is easily adjusted by simply bending the headband, and I think I've got it perfectly adjusted. I barely feel them when they're on my head, but they still feel and sound a lot closer than the AD900x. Thanks for the awesome review. It solidified my decision to blow a big chunk of cash on headphones, and I couldn't be happier.
I really love the AD900X (got it for mixing but gaming has been so fun with them that I almost want an extra pair, music sounds amazing too with them) and am trying to decide if I should get the r70x. I also love the m50xbt, that and the AD900X are my only good headphones. Help?
I just auditioned both and honestly I was surprised by how strongly I felt about it. They do share a similar sound-signature, but I felt the R70X's _just_ bested the HD600's on most counts. The bass felt both more extended and more natural, the high's a little less present but again more natural to my ears. The soundstage feels slightly closer to the ear, but I found the effect pleasing, and it seems to help the transient response, the HD600's felt more muddled somehow despite the (very slight) extra high end. I also found the R70X's more comfortable (I have small ears), they're incredibly light, almost disconcertingly so at first, but I came to really appreciate it. They felt more delicate than the HD600's and probably less impervious to knocks/drops. I would take them over the HD600's both for accuracy when it comes to mixing (the low end in particular will likely translate better), and for music listening. These seemed to me to be the first headphone I've heard which successfully mirrors what the HD600's/650's does so well, at a comparable price point, but actually improves on them in a couple of meaningful ways.
interesting
I think of late you're my favorite youtuber. Mainly it's the quirky humor and the pauses and cat glances that make your videos perfect. (No cat puns.)
I think your cat is trying to figure out why you're talking to headphones.
Best comment in years 🤣🙌🙏
I've had these for three years now and am very happy with them. I ended up replacing the pads with Shure HPAEC1540 (~$40) and it just brought the comfort level to a max. I have a very small head and ears, and just love how these headphones fit. Clamping force is perfect, and they stay on the head so easily because of the lightweight. I actually wear these when I go rollerblading with ease. If you aren't going to be sweating all over them, they will work great for being somewhat active.
A few months back I got the MrSpeakers Aeon Flow Closed, as well as paired it with the IFI micro idsd black label, after listening to a pair of closed back beyerdynamics and wanted to get that more intimate sound experience. What I will say is that these are over twice as expensive as the AT R70x, and sound signature likes/dislikes aside, I think the level of performance you get in the R70x along with the benefits of being cheaper and lighter (that I feel I don't have to handle them like they are made of glass), make these great value. I also got them on sale for around 250. Just get these and you will not be disappointed. They do not bleed sound despite being labeled OPEN, so they can work well if you want to listen next to other people and not have them hear the music.
I've never been so confused from a review in my life.. my man, you are the master of tangents
Firstly the R70x is the most un-Audio Technica in terms of sound signature that most who are familiar with the brand know. I think the Sennheiser HD600 was first and foremost *the benchmark for neutrality and then came along the Hifiman HE400S and Audio Technica R70x ( roughly all 3 are at the same price point ).
Full stock version - HE400S is the most neutral with very good detail/sound stage -- HD600 a bit more bass/narrower sound stage ( as compared to HE400S ) -- R70x again more bass/low end and just slightly narrower sound stage than HD600.
Honestly really loving size/weight/build/correct amount of clamping force and headband ( close distance to head ) of R70x.. you can actually use them outdoors without looking obnoxious.
Another great review there Z and Z's cat.
The best price to performance headphone you can buy imo. The imaging and tonality on these is actually incredible, nothing in the price range comes close.
Do these stay on your head? I remember I had a pair of cheaper Air's years ago and I returned them because i needed a rubber band mod to keep the wings on my head. Does this have the same issue?
I have a pair of the R70X, was checking them against the sound of my Adam A7x monitors in my project studio and I had to check a couple times to make sure my Adams were not playing in the background, very nice sound, lighter than my AKG headset and sound much better overall, similar in sound to my Adam monitors. These are fairly honest headphones and I would recommend them for the price. Could absolutely work on mixes with these cans.
I bought M70x instead for live sound mixing . and its not suit for the job at all
regret buying M70X back then . M50 still the go to for live monitoring .
hi steve . what is your rangking for mixing , based on experience the cans that you have used regularly . I thot of buying R70X or Sundara for mixing at home . senn 6 series leaning towards the mids . i wanted open back that is quite flat across both ends . but at the price of Sundara or R70X
I just want to say that I am very impressed with the aging of your HD600, I saw it on Headfi a while back, probably 2 years (?!) ago and they look just the same. That was about the same time I painted my HD580s and made custom grills for them. Nicely done.
+Brandon I only painted mine over the summer and rarely go to headfi. You have to find this person and destroy them for me.
It feels like I saw that video forever ago, definitely yours. Maybe the 2-year ago version of myself was a time traveler or something. Or I just drink too much. Pick one or both and we'll just say that's what happened.
I love your reviews, man.
Can you do a review of your cat? It is ADORABLE!
I was coming here to type that. Beat me to it.
Darn it.
+Joel Schirmer Already did....not in a dedicated video, but he gave it a 7/10
TL Divine Link?
+Joel Schirmer it is one of the iem videos
"It's so... *hypnotized by cat* ... rural.... and amazing"
nice review. keep up the good work. hopefully i can find a store that has one of these to try on.
Bought my pair of r70x recently, the original package was good enough but I decided to swap pads. Got a pair of Brainwavz angled oval pads to fit and they’re perfect now. Extremely comfortable and soundstage got enhanced due to the extra thickness.
Do they fit well?
I just bought these today. I totally agree with you that they're on par with each other.
Originally I was gonna buy the HD600 but I got a good deal on the R70x so I went for it. Plus the R70x is much lighter and not as clampy as the 600 which I preferred
happy purchase~ woo
Just bought some MSR7s earlier today based on your reviews. So excited.
+ZOMBIEWINEGUM according to my brother they have quite the clamping force so you might want to try to stretch them. He also said they had to little bass, but that's just preference.
+KingClaus of Yllin They do have too little bass, it rolls off heavily.
picked up a pair of these, love them... still would love to compare against the 2000x, but didn't want to drop that kind of $... already planning to make my own cable because the included one is just too long...
Whitch one? The HD600 or the R70X?
15:12 CMON GUYS UPVOTE LETS MAKE Z A FUTURE TELLER.
+feketetv zeos "No"
Niraj pun :D
His official response lol.xx
havent got to 70 yet
I totally agree with you although I only tried both for less than an hour. Sennheiser is slightly more detailed in the highs. But I think the r70x sounds more natural with some more bass. And above all I think the r70x floats on the head, it feels like there is NO headphone and the sound comes from anywhere (in a good way).
While on the Sennheiser, you feel the weight of the pads and it removes sound immersion. I would pick the r70x for my everyday headphone.
good review bro! am going for the audio technica ath r70x! thanks bro!!!!
"The f*ck is that Sennheiser?" Most favorite part about this.
I have r 70s so light and comfy you can barely feel them on your head and best flattest clear sound for mixing ever!!!
Exactly my thought ! you don't feel them and it immerses you in the sound, you forget about the headphone.
this is the best review/reviewer ever. the information was bar none. ..however, the cat and the 1984 dodge intrepid. ..best. thanks for posting. just bought a pair of r70x's yesterday can't wait to put them on.
i always thought of myself as a "speaker" kind of music lover, but now that i got a couple of fine, entry level HP's i think my path has made a turn left, or right. just today installed the brainwavz pads on my m30x's and they have become glued to my head. i find these HP's perfect for mp3 music, they give it the brightness those files lack.
Cat review coming up soon? like, how soft is the fur, and how is the sound quality?
When the patreon hits $1,500.
It hit 1500, looks like the cats getting a review
That cat, he/she wanted to steal some of your thunder there.
Solid review, saving right now to buy the HD800 but hear there will be a HD800S model coming, hope I don't get burned on price and/or quality when the S model releases.
AD2000X are another headphone I wish to buy as I game a lot.
Thanks for the awesome videos and thank you for your help also on Twitter.
+ASe7en HD800s is out already, it's better than HD800 because it's got smoother highs (no more annoying peaks) and better bass extension, and overall a fuller sound. I wouldn't buy a HD800 with HD800S being available. Unless you need the headphone for studio use.
The Monolith M560 do what you're talking about with the wire not mattering if its left or right. It's made to work either way and correctly.
Your closing statement is perfect.
fantastic review brother had me sitting on the edge of my seat the suspense was killing me this is one of the single most important reviews period
Seriously man. I have the AD900X (in love, also have/love the m50xbt) and am going crazy trying to decide on the r70x, lol. Might even get an extra pair of the AD900X lol.
He 400 s with brainwaiwz pads or hd 600 or R 70 for more natural sound? And are He 400 as comfortable as had 600?
Would you buy HD650 or R70X fro music?
well which one is it, the 600 or the R70X?
hi, can i drive this headphone perfectly with oppo ha 2 se?
I'm pretty sure that Sol Republic has a head phone cable just like the ATH-R70X. Dual TRS ending in a single TRS, not sure if it's wired the same internally though.
Do you prefer these in sound quality compared to the SHP9500?
idk if anyone said b4, but I'd guess the plug/jack design is intended to provide stress resistance. 1/8 are crap, after all. you want to take the stress off of the contact jack/ plug, which they seem to do using a larger plastic, locking area that takes the strain off the connector. I wish there was a standard for 1/8 stress-relieving connectors. People rightly complain about the failures of the jacks in all sorts of devices.
You and your amazing wall papers.
+UsaraDark My reserves are running dry and I must soon venture out for more.
Are these a bad idea for playing guitar and synths late at night? Would it be enjoyable to record on these?
Thank you! Just wondering, what headphone amps do you recommend for the R70X? I'm looking for one that is clean (no apparent distortion) with the most bang for your buck at a decent price.
Schiit Magni is be B4B [amzn.to/2vZ5SBT]
I was expecting the cat to jump on the cable when you threw it lol :d
How do they compare to the HE400i with the 2.5 mm plug in cables soundwise?
which DAC etc do I need to drive the R70? Any recommendations /suggestions?
I heard the R70x has a bit of distortion compared to the cleaner HD 600. Did you hear any of that?
Looking at this desk in 2019 is hilarious
Thank you for the awesome review!
How do they sound with X1S? I am deciding which dac/amp I should get for my R70X
+lmjpeter Great. The X1s has enough power for them.
I watched this trying to figure out if I want the R70X's and left looking for AKG and Beyerdynamic options...
I use the brainwavz pads its better making the soundstage larger and more comfort and extra treble around 3db... And that kind of wire is really easy to find.. One for good quality cost me $30 and its made in japan
what is the dedicated amplifier for this?
Anyone know where to get a set of balanced cables for the r70x? Would love to untap a bit more of that sweet potential =)
Was thinking DIY as most places seem very cosg prohibitive.
Zeos, what would be your personal pick between Magni2/Modi2 (non Uber) and O2/ODAC.
I'm having a hard time deciding between them. Any tips?
+igneus Really both do their jobs very well. I don't think you would hear a difference between them. Pick the style you like.
Love the cameo by the cat
I fucking love these. If you have small ears, I can't recommend these enough at this price range.
smol ears gang rise up
i love your Reviews whats your oppinion on the beyerdynamic mmx 300 or would you recommend the Philips Fidelio x2 + v-moda boompro mic ? and whats your opinion on the hyped bose quiet comfort 25 ?
+Rafael t. Bose are just OK. A bit synthetic sounding with their cancellation. The MMx300's I haven't heard. The X2's are always a good choice.
That cat is adorable, makes me smile :)
I ordered both to compare them. The 600s arrived and the r70x got lost en route. I guess my decision has been made. 600s are amazing!!!
Damn. Hope you got your money back.
The headband looks like a hose clamp
+dacasman A Device I respect
Z Reviews Yes. Hose clamps are almost as great as zip-ties
Hi z...
I wanna upgrade mine is ath m40x
Is ath R70x way better than mine ?
Is worth it ?
Thanks
Some people have said that the R70x are not as refined as HD600 in the mids and treble. Also, any grain?
I tested both in a shop. Sennheiser is more detailed in the highs. I am not sure about the mids But I think the r70x sounds more natural with some more bass. And above all I think the r70x floats on the head, it feels like there is NO headphone and the sound comes from anywhere (in a good way). You cannot tell if something sounds in your room or from the headphone.
While on the Sennheiser, you feel the weight of the pads and it removes sound immersion.
With the 600, you can identify what comes out from your headphone or from your environnment
I would pick the r70x for my everyday headphone, it feels like a transparent layer of sound. Sadly I can't afford it yet.
I wonder what your cat thinks about your reviews and talking to yourself for half an hour at a time. :D
Are you going to review the Massdrop O2?
+Szabolcs Gergely yes
Haha, that's the same thought word for word I had while binge watching this channel today
Are they better than Sennheiser hd600?
Can i drive these with Fiio E10K?
Have you tried the closed version of the ad2000x the a2000x? I am looking for a pair to travel with that have the exact same sound signature as the ad2000x but closed and with good noise isolation.
+Cliff Reeser Only the a1000, only for a few minutes.
soo..get the 2000xD?
If the R70X has a little more bass would it be closer to the HD650 ? Thoughts from you or anyone else on that ? Thanks
+kimbalxyz2 The 70's have more bass than the 650.. The 600 and 650 are VERY close together and people seem to think they are night and day.
I own a pair of Samsung Galaxy Buds Pros. I know these 2 are almost completely different products, but how much better would these sound listening to J-pop and Rock?
awesome video :D
z why you recommend the ad700x for gaming and not the r70x? i read that the 700x have non existant bass
Apparently the locking connectors are the same as the HD5X8 series. I have some on order and will report back
"Will report back" well that was a lie...
What do suggest about studio recording I need a good headphone for the booth cause what I bought so far keeps bleeding into my mic
+Demon Beats Well you need closed. So The Shure SHP840's [amzn.to/1SrXOJI] are my go-to right now for that application.
HI! I've just found this channel and i'de like to thank you for very good quality content!
I'm on 200E Budget and i'm going to buy headphones for only gaming (No music/movies/anything else)
I watched your video praising the AD2000X but they are to pricey for me. :(
So wich under 200 cans are best if i only have soundstage in mind? Is it the AD700x?
Thank you if you take time to answer :)
+Anzabob The AKG K7xx is probably the one in that price range. Or the 900X if you want more accuracy but less soundstage.
I heard people say that 700x/500x would have better sounstage than the 900x? And what do you mean with accuracy?
Are R70x worth buying if I have 560s?
Hi Z, can oppo ha-2 drive these efficiently ? there is a gap between 470 and 300 ohms. But I've read that impedance varies deepening on frequency, and what grabbed my attention was a guy who said that he amazed with the output ! What do you say ?
Hard to verify without them here.
Just got myself some Dre Beats and them is so clean loud and blowed my eardrums out almost.
I think you just made yourself deaf.
Katrina Bautista Lol you could be right but if I was, how would I reply to your comment?
+Justin Culp That is a tough question. -_-
hehe :)
you got me interested in superlux and I'd like to see what you think about their hd 330s
+superdupercake I'm no Zeos, but the HD330s were my babies for four years. Tight clamp, but it's remedied by bending back the headband until it's loose enough. The pads are "eh". I was fine with them, but then again I never had any more comfortable cans to compare them to (until Zeos showed my the HM5s) but you can get Beyerdynamic velours to put on them.
Sound is fairly neutral, but not bass-heavy. Not bassless, just not bass forward. Good soundstage being semi-open, thick coiled cable with a sturdy 3.5mm cable.
I came from HD681s, and I definitely noticed that the sharp, painful highs of the 681s was gone in the 330s. Much, much more sane treble. I find no fault in their sound, but I can't live without the HM5 pads now (which I haven't succeeded in putting on the 330s).
I got them for about $60 if I recall correctly, and it was pure value. The only issue I have with them after four years is comfort, but they're by no means impossible to wear for eight hours at a time or longer.
Thanks for the quick review! I'll probably grab a pair after trying out the hd 668bs.
Your thoughts on these vs the 1000x when coming from the 900x?
These are much more business then pleasure. The bass is better on these but they are not wide cans.
Do the eBay pads change the sound on the AD2000x drastically?
+JTCPingas Almost not at all. Just comfort.
Just got the AD2000x with the Oppo HA-2. What songs in FLAC would you recommend that would blow me away? Something really well recorded or in 3D Binaural audio.
+VersatileEdits Go Nuts mega.co.nz/#F!l0BH1bRa!FbvDrwlZFGVLpd7TDSatdw
Z Reviews Thank you!!!! Listened to almost all of them. The headphones sound awesome. One quick question, how do I properly connect my Oppo HA-2 to my iPhone? I've been listening to the HA-2 connected to my PC but now I want to try it on my phone. I changed it to port A on the HA-2 just like it says on the manual. But do I plug my headphones into the HA-2 still or just into the iPhone? I've tried both and oddly enough with the HA-2 it sounds a lot quieter than it did when connected to my PC. And without the HA-2 connected to the iPhone it sounds louder and better with just the iPhone. That doesn't seem right.
What are your most recommended headphones for FPS gaming? Please help. I am looking for a nice pair at the moment. Budget 500 +/-. Please help
The ATH-AD1000x would fit your budget if you're still looking. If you're trying to play competitively, instead of playing immersive single player game.
Hi Z
Under you recommendation i picked up a set of this and matched them with the Fostex HP-A3 and could not be happier with the sound.
I was hoping you may know of any replacement pads that could fit this phones
i have seen good comments on the
Brainwavz HM5 Velor Memory Foam (angled and non-angled)
Shure HPAEC1540 Replacement
+Az I have one of each of the brainwavz pads. They should fit even though it is a smallish cup.
+Z
If you find the time and if you have the means would you be able to see if they would fit? Of course if it not any trouble?
I don't fancy buying them to then be upset that they would not fit,
Also is the any major different between the two types sonicly?
What is that thing that you plug your headphone into next to the speaker? I would like to obtain something like this>...cheers!
The Fostex HP-A3?
These versus the ATH-AD500X versus the Fidelio X2
Want to get my first entry level "pro" headphones and I would love to try open back ones as I never have before and imam considering these ones. I am also considering the master and dynamical mh40 that I tried at the apple store and loved the sound and build quality. those are 400 bucks and I dont know if they are better than the audio technica on this video or is it just me not knowing anything about good sound quality. Which ones would you guys recommend ? I must say that I am planning to only use them at home to listen to music and just enjoy the best sound experience possible. I know that the A-T are 50 bucks cheaper but I might need to get an amp. I dont count with any other piece of equipment such as an amplifier so I would be using them with out one. Which would be the best buy, Can the audio technica be used without an amp ? thanks to anyone taking the time to answer. Cheers!
+Miguel Soto The AT's need an amp for portable use. They are a good contender.
Where is the link for the pads on the AD series?
+Nyanino Right Here. www.ebay.com/itm/Thick-Velour-Ear-Pads-Cushion-For-ATH-AD-1000-X-2000-X-900-X-700-X-Headphones-/251699464310
Any chance to see your review of Grado headphones?
+Natisk The SR60 review is out here. There is a 500e review coming.
That cat is hilarious :-D btw. nice review, thanks ;-)
I have a tiny ear, so I'll probably benefit from the round pads of the Audio technica.
I compared the R70X with the A700X, m50x, m40x (all audiotechnica) and the Shure srh 840(the rest there were irelevant to my ears). I needed a pair of closed cans. Exept for the R70X which are opened cans but i added them cuz they had gread sound stage (big fan of soundstage). My clasification: R70X, Shure 840, m40x last m50x. Oh i forgot something? Yea the A700X because they were the last ones and simply BLEW my mind, almost identical soundstage(even better than R70X) sound as clear maybe better than the Shure 840 but not as neutral(very warm). But wait? a700x is a pair of closed cans? Why did they sound so good to me?Why did they have better imaging and soundstage than the R70X???? I don't know the internet has little to no reviews of the A700X. Is it because they were really easy to power? I mean I put them directly in my Redmi note 3 Pro Smartphone and they were like crazy loud. In short they did everything better than the rest and even my friends agreed(2 different friends other songs and tastes in music). Why are they discontinuing them now? I can't even buy them, they are 99$ on amazon but they won't ship in Europe(here they are 300$).
I also love the r70x, srh840 so much. But unlike Z I kind of like the m50 which in spite of the too present bass and not so detailed higher frequencies, sound very natural. I do not like the 40's which sound shifted towards the highs
Hey. Do you know Genelec? I would like to hear your opinion about like G3 or any of their product.
+Toni Sky Their stuff is well known but expensive.
So I'm using these headphones with a Magni 2 Uber and a Titanium HD sound card. Really nice with music and movies but with gaming, not as nice as my ATH-A700 closed headphones (not the AD700 or A700x). What can I do to improve soundstage and generally the audio gaming experience?
No way to bump SS with these. They are the most narrow cans I ever heard. They are for analysis and excel at it.
I find CMSS-3D helps a bit. I am getting use to these headphones with gaming. I have a Magni 2 Uber amp and a portable Cayin C5 amp (which arrived this morning!) I have plenty of listening to do :D
Hey man what's a good dac to use with a ps4. I was thinking about the sound blaster x7. What's your opinion?
+sanders850 If you need a microphone in you have to stick to the usb "sound cards" and not dacs.
what was the place that you got the hd600s wires from?
Here bestintheversecables.com/
because the hd 600s and r70x are reference headphones, they are designed to be used in a studio when mixing and editing music. so they are by design to be a completely flat in their sound signature, they were not designed for home listening as the ad 2000x was
they may be reference headphones but the r70x is in to way flat, its tuned to have hyped bass and vocals at the expense of treble. Flat would be closer to the hifiman sundara and he560.
The r70x is perfect for chilling out and casual listening.
Hey would you think the OPPO HA-2 would be the perfect home/mobile set up? I was considering getting a dedicated set up, but with college lately I'm out of my house more and more.
+idontwannaupload Yes. if I had a need I would get one to do just that.
Oh sweet, and thanks for the reply.
btw, how is the paint job holding? Any noticable wear?
+Māris Samats None.
I am going to be that guy. These or HE400S with HM5 pads? I know some other headphone reviewer prefered these to the Hifimans.
+DCsProductions No
I can help. Maybe. Uhh, I really like my 400S' with the hm5 pads. I'm pretty sure the 400i's are $300 now. the HE series is going to be QUITE a bit heavier. So, it's up 2 u.
The O2 amp could drive it to the acceptable sound?
+Jon Ma Yes.
I use the R70x for mastering. To be fair I have a pair of Neumann KH120A as well. But if you had to get one pair of headphones. Get the R70x.
Are you serious? These headphones are that good? I am planning to buy both your above mentioned items and that is stunning news that these headphones are so good?
psysword Like its no joke how good the headphones are.
How are they compared to the Senn HD 700? Any idea? Thanks for the fast reply man!
thanks bro, im making a decision for today atm, 600's or r70x's i trust you
What amp do you use? I’m an artists but I engineer myself as of a recent contractual change (really into owning my masters now). It’s going really well and I’m getting these to reference however I know it will be acceptable to plug into my interface directly or if I’ll need an amp. Even if I have to turn the volume knob up quite a bit w/o amp idc. Just wondering. What’s your setup for amp? You think I’ll need it? Thinking schitt hersey currently just to save a bit
