Nice "desert rat" session. So relaxing to camp out there. 100 years ago and more it must have been really hard making it on a homestead. This area was one of the last to be heavily homesteaded by government programs that encouraged the urban "excess" to take up ranching and farming. The extreme temperature change from hot summers to cold winters and bad rocky soil must have been a nightmare. And then if you could grow a crop or raise cattle the marketing logistic would be near impossible.
True, the whole story about those folks is so interesting to me. I would love to talk with someone who lived it. Get their stories!

You should research The Oregon Maneuver. A WW2 training exercise that sprawled over the desert from Bend to Burns. Would explain some of the weird rock structures that you find. I have found a few WW2 dated C-ration cans out there near Wagontire.

Another great video! Curious about needing to fill up with the jerry can. Do you fill up right before you hit the dirt roads or do you do hundreds of miles out there?
Do you get a lot less gas mileage roaming around the dirt roads? Just wondering if its a real necessity to bring a Jerry can.
Great question. I keep 1 gal in the can all the time. Even around town. To help people who need it. Bend is my last gas stop before hitting the desert. I normally put 2-4 gal in it there depending on how far I think I’m going. When my tank reaches 1/2 tank, I dump all but one gal in my main tank. Mainly to rotate the fuel in the can and to get the weight off the tailgate. I dump it as soon as possible.
I get about 15.5 mpg when off road. In the trip in the video. I needed every drop. I was out there for two nights. But only filmed one day.
How fast can you drive on those kind of roads comfortably? That had to be so much work living in that desert without anything around. Do you know about when the people were homesteading up there?
Depends on the road. 2-15 miles per hour normally. The years started around 1862 or so. So those foundations are pretty old. I’m not that good with dating stuff, but I’d assume anything old out there is from 1862-1950 ect.
@@NorthwestBronco I didn't figure you were ripping it up in Baja mode. Kinda trail riding I dig it. Were they out there looking for gold? I think I remember watching a video where you got in trouble for metal detecting? Have you ever tried it around these old homesteads?
@@dannyp4959 there’s plenty of places to Baja, but slow rolling most of the time. Could be gold, really not sure. Normally I don’t have time to metal detect, maybe I’ll do a video revisiting places and focusing on that. Hmmmm
I bought one to use at a friend"s place in France. After that I lent it to someone here that has a house that used to be a doctors office in the 1800's. They found all kinds of old coins. Weird little things people dropped. Maybe you could find something around one of those old homesteads. @@NorthwestBronco
