This programme had everything. No wonder my grandmother was addicted to it!
The Irma Barlow character could so easily have been rather annoying but for the expert and natural performance of the actress and her great comedy timing - Irma was always one of my favourite characters
Beats the socks off the rubbish they put up these days.
I liked Irma. She had a sense of humour.
Watched 28 February 2020. UK. Annie Walker and Jack. The original Hyacinth Boquet and husband, Richard. Thanks for the entertainment. RIP. X
Doris Speed brought much needed class to the programme.
Yes her and Emily Bishop - the is no one of class in any of the soaps now
Much slower and easier to hear than today's shows.
"...or do you want a bulletin on the state of me varicose veins, me rheumatism and me wind?" - Ena 18:09
“What’s that word for when you murder your husband?”
“Justice!”
I laughed my head at that line.
Written by Jack Rosenthal. Who was married to Maureen Lipman.
And their children ( I think) appeared as brother and sister in a Robin of Sherwood episode ‘The Children of Israel’.
“Ken-seein’ ‘im sitting there, D’you think we’ll ever make a councillor of ‘im? Seeing im’ sittin’ there with porridge dribbling all down is’ shirt?”
16:12 the Copper's having a pint in uniform😂😂😂 times have changed 😂😂
Same over here in America. Country folks can’t stand outsiders at all. Even if your just passing through but like when you spend your money in there stores.
I share Hilda's views on camping, completely.
Mrs Walker should have more decorum than to be on the phone at mealtime. ‘Breakfast is for civilised conversation with Jack.’ I mean what example is she setting her ‘ward’, Lucille? What would Harry tell Lucille?
Even though this was made and shown in 1966, this (remaining) copy is dated 1970!
Day i was born... Wednesday
What nice friendly people you get in the countryside?
You must be joking. Them country folk have no time for the townspeople, bringing their evil ways an all.
@@carolineg1872 Oh country people have far more evil ways
Get your own tea Jack you old shovinist pig
If you're going to be some sort of white knight of righteousness completely discarding the fact that this is from an era of certain gender expectations then at least have the power of good grammar.
Random comment: It’s 2023, and I’m aware and still adherent to many of the old gender roles. I’ve served my husband meals, and packed numerous lunches for the past 31 years. But, believe me when I tell you, that that man I’ve looked after all these years, has always, always been complimentary, polite, and grateful for everything I’ve done for him. I’m sick with cancer now. I do what I want, whenever I want-including cooking and cleaning, and now, my sweet husband very much enjoys looking after me. 👨🏻🦳❤️👵🏼
@@laurallama73 Dont mind me the comment was made toung in cheek - and of course there is a big difference between you and your husband and Jack and Vera Duckworth - as long as both parties are happy with they way things work thats all that matters - sorry about your illness - you will be in my thought and prayers
Poor Jack just wants his breakfast.😆❤️🍳🥐🧀☕️🫖
