WORKSPACE WINDOWS in Blender - How to Add, Adjust, and Remove Blender Windows!

- In this video, we’re going to talk about how you can quickly add and remove extra windows in Blender. A lot of the time, you’d like to be able to use your viewport to see how an object looks, while having other windows open with information about your object, like shader information, animation information, or more.
Adding the windows is fairly simple - just move your mouse over the corner of a window and look for the little crosshair. Once your mouse turns into a little crosshair, you can click and drag up, down, left, or right in order to add a new window to your workspace.
Notice that when you do this, you can click the little drop down in the upper left hand corner to select the kind of editor the window displays, allowing you to select anything from another 3D viewport to UV editing and more.
On thing that trips new users up a bit is then - how do you get rid of the extra windows? This is actually fairly simple - what you want to do is mouse over the division line between your different windows and right click on it.
This will pop up a little option for some different things you can do with your windows. You want to select the option for “join areas.” This will give you a little arrow on your screen, and you can use it to select which direction you’d like for your windows to merge. Click on another window and this will join the two windows together, effectively getting rid of a viewport.
Note that you can only merge windows with the same number of windows in the target join window, meaning if you have one column with two windows in it, and one column with one window in it, you’ll have to merge the two windows into one before you can merge the single column together.
Hi Everyone! Let me know if you have any questions about this tutorial in the comments below! :)
How to save workspace not just in currently opened file but in general? If I save it by custom startup file will it show in older projects? I want to make preview workspace, can I make blender to open this workspace with render preview already on instead of manually changing it every time? Can I save render settings to be same across all my projects?
@@genesis2303 pass the favour on :) EDIT - DEFAULT - SAVE STARTUP FILE. Now when you exit and open a new file the template and everything in it loads. :)
@@sorrowinchrist3387 by 3 months I figured it out, but thx anyway ;)
@@genesis2303 I figure it out as a newbie in a few hours. :) Though have not figure out how you customize the user interface so you can place things where you want.
I want to return my area. I accidentally used my join area and made my node area cover the whole screen instead of my model.
Thank you. It was driving me crazy for an hour, I couldn't close double of property window until I finally searched for a tutorial that would show me how to do that. The most basic stuff, but I did not know how to do that.
Glad it helped!

Thats what happened to me. I created too many windows. Lol.. I been struggling how to join them. Thanks for the tips man.
LOL - I made this video after I spent a fair amount of time trying to fix this myself :p
@@TheCGEssentials you just saved my life man. thank you

I first discovered Justin when I was learning Sketch-up. Now I've discovered Blender and I'm so happy to find Justin here also. He provides great tutorials for the beginner that are to the point and easy to follow. Thanks Justin!
Thank you very much. I created around 15 windows which drove me crazy. I finally saw your tutorial which helped me a lot. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for the video. I am still amazed on how powerful blender is. The learing curve is a bit steep but it's not impossible to learn.
Who on god's green earth created this completely non-intuitive system from hell! Next time they should design something easier that would involve solving a rubik's cube whenever you want to open or close a workspace.
Yeah you showed them didn't you!
EXACTLY! Lmao, they need to get fired, they're really dumb to be honest. A simple close button would do, it's just common sense.
Flexibility breeds complexity! I've been using Sketch-up and recently found Blender. Yeah, it's complex, and I'm excited to see the the versatility and things I can do. It's also well supported, so yeah, I have to go search a lot for simple things (like managing windows), and when I need it, it's there. I'm giving it a month the get the basics, then 10 years to really feel it's power! lol
I ended up with 30 windows one time, just trying to close these stupid things. How about right click and...."close."
emang memek
Very nice video. Everytime you showed me a solution, I was like "yeah BUT!.." and you had that covered directly. Very pro!
Awesome, to the point, well explained and no extra unnecessary fluff... that's how all tuts should be done.. well done..
Glad it was helpful!
even as i progress and improve, i add to my personal playlist incase i forget, but also if i need to refer people to the assistance they need then your video will also be presented to them, thank you for simplifying this to us all.
Nearly 2 years later, this is still helpful! Thank you!!!
Really good and simple video. Was not finding a way to get rid of some of the windows once I created them! Thanks!
Thank you so much - I'm like all the others going crazy trying to figure this out!
I had accidentally placed an unwanted window not knowing how to remove it, but now I know how to fiz it and how i did it in the first place. I just wanted to say thank you, that's all.
Many thanks for showing how to close (join) two areas together. Really useful for me.
The EXACT info I was looking for, including REMOVING extra windows. THANKS!
Always helpful like usual... thanks Justin
Huge help this video, thanks man!
Quick and easy. Well explained. Thank you!
Thank you for this, Justin. I had long since forgotten how to delete/merge windows in Blender, and it did indeed become very frustrating when accidentally spawning new windows in the workspace. Cheers!
Very concise. I was so frustrated trying to control the windows. It was so simple I feel like an idiot! Its great how one little snippet of correct information can change everything!
Thanks for the video! Very awesome
Thanks for this!
Thanks a lot! I almost had 6 shader editors open and had no idea what to do!
Helpful! This issue was making me nuts. I didn't know you could right-click between windows to combine them. Thanks!

Thank you so much!!! I subscribed :)
its helpful thank you
Thank you that really helped! Never was closing a window so complicated :D
Lol - I thought the same thing when I first started with Blender :p
This video was extremely useful for people like me just starting out. Thank you so much!
Hi. Great intro to workspaces, thank you!
I was wondering: since it's now possible to create new independent windows by holding Shift and dragging a corner... On a second monitor it seems a newly created window is either present in all workspaces or not at all. Is there a way to save the existence or minimzed/maximized status of the extra window? Let's say I want only the UV Editing workspace to use both screens, but when modeling I'd rather use the other screen for something else?
thank you , its very useful for me
For anyone that also wants to tear of a copy to drag to another monitor...
Select the tab you want to change to a new monitor, go to Window> New Window.
It’ll duplicate the current tab you’re in into a separate window you can move to another monitor
Great tip - thanks!
i was looking that
YO thank you so much! This was exactly what I needed
Glad it helped!
Thank you Justin for the video! It's really helpful for my school project :)
Great to hear!
thanks brosky! your explanation is always the best, from SketchUp to rendering to cg essentials... hope you can help with architectural modeling in blender without archipack, before i find a way or just move to 3ds max (appropriate emoji)... nonetheless, it's great, thanks.
Thanks for the info!
No worries!
bruh i was about to give up my project and restart doing it because of this, thank you very much bro xD

Glad it was helpful!
Very very much thank you for this tutorial !
Thanks for watching!
just soo much helpful. . . perfect content. . .
As a total beginner I found this very helpful, thank you!
I had the same issue. The problem is many of us, position the + sign right between both windows. The trick is NOT to position the pointer in the middle of both. Instead, When you see the + sign, have it in the corner of a workspace window and then drag to the opposite side for the deleting arrows to show up.
thanks man!!
i watch this video to remove my 2 window into 1. Now I have 3 windows
Thank you!
Very helpful. Thanks a lot
Glad it was helpful!
Brilliant!
Thank you :)
Thanks!
Excellent content.
thank you very much,
wrote this before see the entire video,
i knew good tutors for how it explained on the first place
I don't understand the full statement, but glad you liked it I guess...
THANK YOU!! you saved me.
Good job on this!
Thanks!
I've used the split window thing for a while, but couldn't get it to collapse them. It seemed pretty random for when it would offer it, and would usually just split it further. The right click trip to join them did the trick. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
thank you!
Very helpful
Thank you!!!
this literally saved my whole file thanks
Glad it helped!
Thanks, man!
No problem!
"JOIN AREAS" - thank you for this. I had 4 windows on my small tablet and I couldn't get rid of them lol.
Thanks man for the tutorial. I just exported my whole project to fbx and Imported in another blender to get rid of that messy workspaces 😂😂
saved my life tysm
