They used a Mitsubishi X850 32 track digital tape machine (and two analogue A800s). I spent 8 hours one night removing clicks from the audio when it went wrong. They spent a year in Wessex Studios with the studio feeling like it was 2 in the morning the whole time. They even had an oil-wheel projector in the control room. I was technical manager for Wessex at the time and this is my favourite album of all time. When I close my eyes I feel like I'm sitting next to Phil at the SSL with the Urei 815s cranked up.
If only Mark and Tim weren't such mean bastards I might have got to like them a bit better. If you ever meet them try to get a pint of guiness out of them. A tenner says you'll fail.
That album finished at least one marriage and caused one complete breakdown. Intense for everyone involved.
I left before Laughing Stock was recorded but I dropped in to the studio to say hello the day they were making safety copies of the mixes. Tim asked what I thought and I told him I thought it was incredibly clever music but asked how the record company were going to be able to market it. I still prefer Spirit of Eden.

      @TokyoBalletReprise Před 2 lety +6

This album by Talk Talk created a subgenre of rock called « post rock » which focuses on stuff like layers, texture, tones, etc. Post rock is also defined by the usage of rock instrumentation and technique in pursuit for non rock sounds. To think Talk Talk would go from simple new wave/synth pop band that a big label signed in hopes of turning them into the next Duran Duran to one of the most critically acclaimed and influential bands of all time. All 3 members of the band were above average at what they did tho, the drummer and bassist were much better than most of their peers at the time and Mark Hollis was a good singer and multi-instrumentalist who’d become a fantastic songwriter as time went by. All their albums are good outside of their first one which is a basic synth pop/new wave record, it has a few bright moments, but it’s nothing special. Their 2nd album (and last New Wave/synth pop album) is where they started showing they were talented. The 3rd album was a huge change in sound, they went from New Wave/Synth pop to Art pop (A term for experimental pop that seeks to explore new boundaries: think Kate Bush, but with their take on it of course) and then with their 4th album they released the first album to be considered “post rock” and it would go on to be very influential on experimental music as a whole and would make other bands/artists start doing Post Rock. Their 5th and final album is where they perfected their post rock formula. “Laughing Stock” to this day is one of the most critically acclaimed albums of all time by critics and to people who have listened to it. Both their final albums are masterpieces although I’ll have to say I agree with the majority that “Laughing Stock” is the best one, but both are fantastic. Mark Hollis, the frontman of the band, was one of the biggest musical geniuses of the 20th century. May he Rest In Peace.
Post rock is perhaps the best rock subgenre of all time with lots of great bands being apart of it. Talk Talk (the creators), Slint (Helped pioneer the genre a few years after Talk Talk’s Spirit of Eden), Swans (One of the best bands of all time and they’ve explored many genres, but their best works were mostly post rock), Godspeed You! Black Emperor (Behemoths of post rock known for basically being an orchestra, but made up of rock instruments), Sigur Ros (Probably the most accessible post rock band. They’re a legendary Icelandic group known for making people cry at their concerts because of how beautiful their music is. Their singer/lead guitarist also happens to be a great singer with perhaps the best falsetto ever and he pretty much perfected playing a guitar with a cello bow). Then there’s other good post rock bands like Mogwai, Bark Psychosis, A Silver Mt. Zion (A side project by some of the Godspeed You! Black Emperor members), Tortoise, Explosions in the sky. You also have bands that may not be post rock oriented, but have done quite a few post rock songs or maybe 1 post rock album such as Radiohead, Stereolab, Boris (legendary Japanese metal band that decided to make a post rock album that ended up being fantastic), Slowdive and many others.
Post rock songs I’d recommend checking out:
      -Hoppipolla (by Sigur Ros)
      -Svefn-g-englar (by Sigur Ros)
      -Starálfur (by Sigur Ros)
      -Breadcrumb Trail (by Slint)
      -Good Morning, Captain (by Slint)
-Blood Promise (Live version) (by Swans)
      -Helpless Child (by Swans)
-Storm (by Godspeed you! Black Emperor)
-Sleep (by Godspeed you! Black Emperor)
-East Hastings (by Godspeed you! Black Emperor)
      -Flood II (by Boris)
      -Brakhahe (by Stereolab)
      -Parsec (by Stereolab)
-The Summer Ends (by American Football)
-Hunted By a Freak (by Mogwai)
      -Absent Friend (by Bark Psychosis)
-Your hand in mine (by Explosions in the sky)
I’d heavily recommend any song off the last 2 talk talk albums too.

Not a single album in all of history have I ever listened to more than this. It always seems new to me, Like I'm listening to it for the fist time, every single time. And I swear that every single time I listen, I hear something that I have never heard before in the music. A brief pause, a sound that is fleeting and ghostly, but still yet there. It is like a dark lush forest that can be perpetually explored.

My only problem with SPIRIT OF EDEN, is that I almost always have to follow it immediately with the last album, LAUGHING STOCK. They are such a blissful, soul-consuming experience, that I almost feel like I'm cheating if I listen to one and not the other. Crazy, I know...
But on a rainy night, I turn the lights off and sit through these two records in their entirety. I bought LAUGHING STOCK first on cassette at a used record store. Then I found SPIRIT OF EDEN a year or so later in the early 90's, and this music is just part of me now.

David Sylvian and others (e.g. Robert Fripp) were also developing work of a similar style, arguably even less pop/ rock. Check out Sylvian's "Secrets of the Beehive" (87), "Gone To Earth" (86), or the earlier track Nostalgia from 84's "Brilliant Trees". The same year Laughing Stock was released, check out the reformed Japan's "Rain Tree Crow" (91). All have similar horns, guitar, rhythms, ample spaces etc. Nice to hear both Hollis & Sylvian's voices over this style of backing.
