Yussef Kamaal are shaped by the sound of London. Growing up in the capital, they frame jazz within the bass-saturated, pirate radio broadcasts of the UK capital. The pair, made up of Yussef Dayes and Kamaal Williams (aka Henry Wu), have had little in the way of formal training. Instead, their musical tastes - and approach to playing - are indebted to Thelonious Monk’s piano as much as the drum programming of Kaidi Tatham.

Both hail from South East London, crossing paths in 2007 as teenagers playing their first pub gigs around Peckham and Camberwell. Dayes drums for cosmically-inclined, afrobeat outfit United Vibrations, while Williams - on top of drumming and playing keys in different incarnations over the years - has made waves with his solo, synth-draped house 12″s for much-fêted labels like 22a and Rhythm Section.
Born out of a one-off live session to perform Williams’ solo material for Boiler Room, it soon became a project in its own right. From rehearsing for that first show, it was clear to both that there was the possibility to do much more with the unspoken, telepathic grooves that unfolded. “It’s all about the drums and the keys,” Williams says. “That’s where it all originates from: the chords, the rhythm of the chords and the drums.” Coming together as Yussef Kamaal, they played a series of live shows where little more than a chord progression would be planned before taking to the stage.
For the pair, the sound of the capital - with its hum of jungle, grime and broken beat - has shaped a self-taught, UK-tipped approach to playing jazz. Moving in the same circles but never playing together previously, rhythm underpins an innate musical understanding. Drawing influence from all corners of London’s shapeshifting musical make-up, their hotly anticipated debut album is due on Brownswood Recordings November 4th 2016. Titled Black Focus, its sound is distilled - or focused - down to the core interlock between drums and keys. - Hudba
Love the "Black Ford Focus" hidden behind the Arabic writing.
Hello Jonny - didn't expect to see anyway I know here? It's Joe Purnell by the way - you probably don't recognise my work account. Yes just seen the Ford Focus - took me a while. Will be seeing these at Dimensions festival this year.
Yo Joe, How tricks buddy? I just looked at the line-up for Dimensions!!!! WOW! You must go see my mate Radioactive man play Live. Pure ELECTRO at its best. I went to Croatia last year for Suncebeat festival. Was amazing fun. Would love to go back.
Will check him out
Jonny B' well spotted! Good eye for detail or mad passion for cars or both lol?
Wow, that's cool! Good eye!
How am I just discovering this album in 2023? Damn. This is phenomenal.
no u
no matter when.. whats important is that you did!!!!
Have you discovered Megashira (2001) yet?
Same!
Same here! Better late than never, right? :D Greetings from LatAm!
Whenever i go into the comment section of these most underrated yet most masterpiece-ful albums all i see is ppl agreeing, wishing each other good day, and love! this is truly what real music sounds like and does to humans. Have a wonderful day everybody.
Very true.
Thank you brother!
I agree with you. Have a wonderful day
Papa Shimada I read the comments but I never put that together like you said but you’re right. Well they say MUSIC brings people together. Thanks for the observation!!!!
Yeah, buddy!
Food for the soul.
For anyone wondering, the Arabic says "Yusuf Kamal"

Thankyou for revealing the other musicians on this wonderful album!
For real, these CZcams suggestions and the updated algorithm they are operating with are a blessing.
praise the lord
Spotify recommendations are shit compared to these.
Korneel Vandaele ik vertel net vandaag dat spotify juist enorm werkt voor mij 😄. vandaar dat ik deze plaat heb besteld 🎶
Yes, tried other 'music' services - CZcams is a god send when sourcing new music. It is yet to let me down!
Kml Dr. Dunno man I think they're about the same. What I usually do is sift through my spotify discovery playlist and then go to youtube with the ones I liked, then also search youtube's suggestions on the side. Pretty good way to find new stuff to listen to (I basically never run out of good new music).
Does anyone else hears Yussef on song Remembrance at 18:52 - 18:53 making little stop (dunno, maybe mistake) and saying Aaaaaa? Such awesome moment, at one second you think he is out, but a sec later he gets back in groove, powerful
Sounds intentional for me :)
Masterpiece!!! I'm Brazilian and your music sounds like Brazilian music and that's not to mention the incidences of the Afro-Brazilian religious that you use in this album ... Brazil stands to applaud your album ... Congratulations!! Obrigado, Yussef !!
Do you have any recommendation for similar Brazilian music?
With or without vocals, I love how Brazilian Portuguese sounds in music.
@@nazzzz89 Sim, Amaro Freitas, the new revelation of Brazil. He does jazz with references to music from northeastern Brazil. Obrigado!
Nossa, sim! Amaro Freitas é um milagre.
I've looked up Amaro Freitas, unbelievable musician. He deserves way more recognition, thank you!

Yussef Dayes is a king on drums!!
Trust!
seriously badass!
Billy Cobham and Idris Muhammad would be proud
Hi huys, listen to my Band. Its called Los Vidriosos and we are From Medellin, Colombia. Hope you like it.

like a young omar ali ! very smouth and a lot of pleasure ....
Don't know how I got here , but i'm not leaving anytime soon!
Amen
This is 1000% hip. All of these dudes have ferocious chops.
Also DnB, fo' sure :)
Yussef Dayes has the chops, Kamaal Williams has the creativity
@@hakeemahmadjamal7403 Checkout JD Beck and Domi, unbelievable talent.
Currently freaking out over how good this is.
I think Yussef Dayes may be one of the best drummers alive at the moment...
Can't stop hearing this album, is amazing, this is new age, old age, old school, new school. Can't stop the transformation of the time we live in..!
The kids brought up on that jazzy shit through the 90's finally grown...this sounds complete!
*jungle
word
@@richjones7313 Of course it's jazz, but there is a jungle/dnb style beat to much of the drumming.
@@zachjohnson637 and hip hop!

Bless the all-knowing youtube algorithm, not for necessarily knowing my taste, but expanding it instead, what a streak!!!!
The drumming here is absolutely majestic. Whole album has that magical chillout vibe. Great stuff.
i know i want more! too bad they broke up

@@dontpanic15 Yussef Dayes has a couple of awesome tracks, check out "Love is the Message" for example
This is probably the best album I've heard come out in the past few years. Simply flawless

Oh daer
Tom Souden I see you like your music bland
Man, this is not OK. (Yeah yeah don't feed the troll, whatever.) It's not OK to shit on people for liking things. It doesn't matter if _you_ think it's a good album or not, dude's allowed to like it.
Anyway, since you have such a great taste in not bland music, what's something you'd recommend? I won't open links but I will look them up on this site.
This album will, I predict, become a classic as did Bitches Brew. A whole world, somewhere between London and Africa, has been created here.
I'm thinking the same thing, listening for the 1nn-th time, this is very sophisticated, beyond its time.
Quarantine season with an album I almost forgot about.. this is the cure right now!
That opening was simply exquisite !!👌 😍 👏.
The incantations fused with all the different sounds transported me to my motherland Zambia 🇿🇲!!!
Beautiful 😍 stuff!
42:15 "But, check it out. You create your own reference point and that has always been what jazz is about."
Was fortunate to ride with an uber driver that had Yussef playing. This music right here! Is what I'm talking about! Please continue to make more my brother. Simply awesome.
I'm surprised these guys haven't been on NPR tiny desk concerts yet.
5 years, still my fav Jazz Album 🙏
For the first time these algorithms on youtube are suprisingly spot on with introducing me to some new dope stuff I've never heard before
the more responsible and disciplined you are with the content you consume, the better algorithms get.
@@Koraxus that mean listen to the same kind of stuff all the time so the machines will only recommend the same crap over and over. i didn't end up here by only clicking stuff I'd heard before. The algorithm led them here because it was new. It led us here cos we were on the path
this is like a hot spring bubbling up from the ground....... happening all by itself, naturally. And you can't escape its warm wonder
well said :)
Hey listeners.Try 'Sly' off Herbie Hancock's 1973 LP Headhunters for an historical reference point.I've purchased this Yussef Kamaal CD and I really dig it, but don't forget to familiarize yourselves with the pioneers of jazz/fusion so you can hear the influences on these young guys.
True!
Amen

This album showed up right on time. I'm blowed and just erased a ton of shit. The perfect vibe for positive motivation. Perfect mix of masculine & feminine. This is definitely being added to rotation. Thank you.
10/10 = a modern masterpiece
Thank God im alive. Give us more of this sound man
I’m three songs in, and my skull is blown open!! Incredibly amazing album!
Vinyl ordered! Sitting by the door, waiting.............A must have!
hope you have it by now ! haha
free floating jazz . mind and body . soulful invasion. rhythm explosion
The drummer is a serene god. Such a majestic playing with no any overforcage or overstrain for effect, the things i hate most of so called "great" rock drummers. The whole album is a kind of new face of modern jazz. Impressed.
This album is so beautiful.
Best album in the world 🙋🏻♂️
This album is a masterpiece! It connects jazz, fusion, electronics in elegant manner, giving a sound that fits equally well with my living room and with a club with live music. The track "Yo chavez" is my favorite.
Oh yes. Some of the best new jazz I've heard in a few years. Magical drums and bass, fine fine keyboards. I love the improvisational feel, with all the perfection of fine musicianship. I can listen to this album all day.
Gifts of music unlimited. Soul to Soul from these musicians. From one jazz head to another .onelove
Just discovered this. Shockingly good. Such a fresh sound, with a lurking familiarity. Sweet!
The continuation to Incognito from the 90ies... damn good
Yo Chavez has one of the slickest bass lines ever!
This album is gold! Knew about it for a few years and sharing with a friend.
It's past 3am and I was suffering through a anxiety attack as I was trying to study my Indonesian course on Duolingo. My attack lurched my progress and stole my focus away from me, I tried every kind of music I had in arsenal; from dark ambience to 90s hip hop beats alongside some breathing techinques I searched up but that combination turned out to be futile on my part. It wasn't until I remembered I that I saved this video, so I clicked back and relaxed. I'm feeling great right now! I've always loved Jazz but I haven't utilized it's use in a decompressing setting in a long time. I'm feeling like my self again, all much thanks to Yussef Kamaal's unique demonstration of beautiful Jazz music! Cheers y'all!
hope your course went well! best to you 🤍
The drums in track 2. I'm blown away.
Found this my second year of college when it came out. It is a timeless album. To this day it just... its great. truly.
Track 7 - Lowrider is the funkiest tune I've heard in a long time - what an absolute pleasure to listen to.
this is wonderful, i cant believe that something like this exists..
Yussef has always been energetic and deeply focused.
What a brilliant album, where has this been all my life?!
So good, love the echoes of classic Motor City techno and house in the string work too. Or even 'Deep Burnt' by Pépé Bradock, but that sampled Freddie Hubbard Little Sunflower, so what goes around comes around. The bass tone is soo satisfying. And drumming is sublimely delicate and funky.
This album is amazing...solid and retro, real musician's. Revived my faith in music!!!
The soundscapes are brilliant, this music is timeless!
I rarely comment on CZcams, but I have to. To me this is mature, classy, and intriguing. Also fun. Sparks alot of feelings/moods when I hear it, actually. Skills upon skills here. Tasteful and a bit on the experimental side. The bass work is awesome so are the drums. Jazz, HipHop, Jungle-ish. One could "chill" to it, but when I hear it I am too busy listening. I have heard several albums that dance around this idea, but none compare imho. Great Stuff!
Hell.. I'm an avid jazz rock collector, and this is the first time ever, I thinks.. that I was in doubt abt the year of this VERY fine music.. It sounded, (apart from some "modern" drum roll's", as we were right back in the 70'ies.. THNX for enlightening me !
One of my favorite albums! 😁🤟🤟 Kamaal Williams-keys, Yussef Dayes-drums, Mansur Brown-guitar..such good vibes.
Masterpiece. Full-stop. Proudly owning vinyl copy.
A serendipitous moment when I clicked on this album. So happy to add this to my jazz collection. Wishing you all a wonderful life.
This is by far the greatest thing I've ever heard
Where are these two we need more music
I was listening to the Bill Burr podcast and he went on about this group. Great recommendation, great album!
AMAZING!!! acid jazz in its purest state.
discovered this by "chance" on new years eve at friend's. This is absolutely fantastic.
Black Focus (Track 1) when the bass comes in - FIRE!!!
With love from Russia, this is great.!
The way the 2nd song starts with epic drumming and thick AF bassline, I was like "Dayum bro!"
That bass & drum pocket so nasty and cozy at the same time. I'm full comfy, I'll stay right here. :3
Yussef kamaal papaa!!
Love from argentina!
Music lives here. Big up to Brownswood for making this available. Support the artist if you can!
I’m full of emotions when it comes to this album, mostly sad because it took me till 2021 to hear about this collective group of musical all-stars.

All Kinds just got mine yesterday a few months after hearing this ;)

This is such supreme music, so indebted to you guys, thank you.
Contemporary masterpiece!!! Thanks God for a bit of fresh air in this current sea of music mud!!!!
create your own reference point, that's what jazz has always been about.
What is this "reference point" you speak of?
I understand it as: do whatever comes from your heart. I find it to be the esence of art. In other words: there is no need to use other peoples work as reference in order to make your art valuable, it already is.
Physics!
@@MooseM3 Love, understanding!
ima need another album please, i be praying on that. king chops on this man
