Dean was one of my favorite writers. I have his "Book of the 45". I also had a 25 TCU barrel for my Contender because of Dean. Only a handful of writers ever inspired the way your Dad did.

That was some pretty good grouping on the paper. I never fired a 45 supper. I have a 10mm Glock 40 and I load my own +P+ ammo because most factory loads are way under loaded the only factory loads I mess with is buffalo bore and some underwood. Great video I love 9mm but it's good to see the larger calibers and someone who loads their own 10mm.

    • @Dayattherange
      @Dayattherange  Před 2 lety +2

Nice setup Dwayne. Who am I to say or judge those that don't go with a flat based firing pin stop. What I would say definitively is the two creators of 45Super just about mandated the flat based stop for a 1911 after all their testing. The one thing I did not mention which was considered a trial and error therefor not mandatory was a 5% increase in magazine spring pressure. This allows for the magazine to keep up with the increased velocity of the slide, though through the other modifications if successful you don't need magazine springs. Today you don't hear many speaking about timings of the 1911 but it is like a Swiss watch and often today because few understand it many consider the platform a pain when the majority of the time it can be related to timing. OK I am preaching now lol Dwayne thanks for stopping by hope you subscribed more 1911 content on the way.

@@Dayattherange I have a Springfield Armory 1911 A1with a slightly heavier factory recoil spring. I ordered it through the mail from the factory and picked it up in a local Coast to Coast store. I live in the Boonies in the Midwest and they were the closest FFL. It was set up to run plus P 45ACP ammo. I found out that it does not like a lot of the newer over the counter Ammo because many have de-rated the ammo. I now have to stick to 230 grn rounds in only a couple manufacturers.
It seems to like CCI Blazer rounds. Are the CCI copper cases good enough to reload or should I just junk them?
Do you like power piston powder for reloading or are you partial to another brand?
I used to have a magic load for my Springfield but they quit making the Powder.
US Army Vet myself. Went into Boot Camp in 1986.
We were the group that they were forcing to adopt the 9mm M9.
They were still changing over. I got a 1911 Colt to qualify with and then the Bastards took it and gave me an M9. Later some of us in certain groups were allowed to carry our 45's again. Then things changed again with the Glocks.
I never understood why they just didn't go back to the 45 ACP in a glock.
After all a handgun is just used to fight your way back to your rifle.
You don't go into combat as your handgun being your primary weapon.
Everyone has their favorite platform and everyone has their favorite Caliber. 😉

    Nice shooting!
I have shot both calibers pretty extensively, all in 5 inch barrels.
I have one of the guns that Ace built and another that I built using one of the conversion kits that Ace and his son Garey used to sell. Garey unfortunately retired and I may have bought the last of those kits...I have three left.
My 10mm was a Colt Delta Elite.
The Starline brass is superb by the way. We started out by forming from 308 Winchester brass which works pretty well but consistency and case life of the Starline brass is better.
From a serious handgun hunters perspective I can tell you that, unless you are hunting really large muleys, the two calibers are interchangeable on deer.
Hogs and bear are a different story. The Super is the way to go.
The biggest challenge is in picking the right bullet. Every 230g hollow point I tried gave about the same result you got or less in terms of penetration.
They open too fast but leave a huge wound cavity. 12- 16 inches is fine on deer but the 185g routinely out performed the 230g. Your observation about the rapid expansion of the 185g was spot on.
Try the Barnes 185g. TAC-XP and you will get better penetration.
The game changer for bigger. tougher and heavy boned game is the 255g hard cast.
If you test that one, I promise that you will need another block of gel. Perhaps two.
On broadside shots on hogs, I never get the bullet back. Same with quartering shots on black bear.
I like to keep things simple. I load 185g and 255g.
I sold the 10mm by the way.
With the right bullet, the Super just out runs it.
Great content here. Liked and subbed.
    Cheers!

All almost exclusively for more advanced handloaders now. Some would even require a lathe to manufacture your own cases. A cartridge that requires that much labor and time or expensive custom loading to produce is generally doomed to obscurity. Interesting investigation of the little known .45 Super. 👍

👍 Wilson shock buffers aren't a solution looking for a problem. They are a solution for normal shooters who don't want to beat their guns to death.
Can you balance a recoil spring for a specific load and, thereby, remove any need for a buffer? Yes. But a "normal" shooter isn't going to use just one specific load. He's going to use whatever is available. And shock buffers are going to be a valuable accessory for him.

Two things of interest.i think underwood sells the 450 SMC which is a twin sister to the 45 super except stronger brass
they use small rifle primer308 Winchester brass cut, reamed for the 450 SMC. now a company in Georgia named GT bullets make a wonderful 452 diia 255 gr hardcast lead wide mouth, deep hp and my water jug tests expansion is 7/8 inch across and retaining weight with in245-250 gr average. outhers may test some different on jell. my loads possibly 900-925 fps.to my estimate. I load these in a Taurus pt 845/ 45acp.no pressure signs or beating up slide. this works flawlessly in the Taurus., I see no need for any modifications.i only use this load for self defense and hunting and limited target shooting. it is a 12+1 shot pistol. I appreciate the test. My issue is it should have been done with comparable weights. For example 180gr 10mm vs 185gr 45 super.
You will notice that the velocity in an equal size test, shows the velocities are comparable.
Also 45super is a lower pressure round
Plus I prefer the versatility of the 45super because I can still shoot 45acp, which is still a respectable round.
The 10mm biggest advantage to me is just more availability.

  • @davidjernigan8161

As I learned from my study of mathematics and physics, we can imagine where concepts trend by taking them to their extremes. Imagine a spit wad in a cartridge case instead of a bullet. It would basically develop the velocity equivalent to the propellant's maximum, but what do we think would happen to penetration? The same principle applies to bullets with a lower sectional density, e.g. lighter bullets by caliber. I'm curious about how much gel a 230 grain XTP moving at 1400 fps would penetrate. Can the bullet retain enough mass to get 16 inches +? If so, that might be my new hunting load. Awesome video! Thanks for sharing!

Great comparison of the two calibers. The tip you threw out concerning the firing pin stop plate was good but was under emphasized, in my opinion. That mod is one of the keys to properly tune a 1911 for high power loads. One more change should be the mainspring. Increasing that spring rate to 25-28 Lbs along with the flat bottom FPSP really helps keep the slide velocity down, much more than a heavy recoil spring which may cause the slide to cycle fast enough to outrun the magazine. I run a 28 lb mainspring and can’t tell the difference in trigger pull from the original spring on my Kimber.

DATR sir! very thorough. may i suggest something? as with rifles, there are SPEED MAGNUMS and POWER MAGNUMS in pistols. i believe your troops would like to see a POWER MAGNUM session with your 6" guns, and using hard cast heavy for calibers bullets. basically outdoor type loads looking for very deep penetration! i am a 1911 fan also, and they are great guns in their own world. and they make excelent backcountry pieces. that's why i would like to see your analytic skills applied to sort out some great calibers that might see backwoods duty on things with lots of teeth and claws.....(bear, wild hogs, wolves, cougars, et al)

If you want to do a comparison video pit the 40 Super vs 10 mm with underwood ammo. As far as case pressures 40 Super is limited to 37,000 psi. The 45 Super does not get to even play in 40 Super ballpark, energies can reach just under 1,000 ft.lbs for muzzle energy for 135gr light loads or with 220gr hard cast the 40 Super still thumps with 890 ft.lbs. Check out the Wikipedia page for 40 Super have a barrel made by KKM or Bar-Sto with a fully supported chamber get a 24 lb recoil spring and have some fun.

@@tyemiller6204 40 Super is one hell of a cartridge. Handloading you are going to get the most out of the 40 Super as there are lots of bullet selections from light 135gr self defense projectiles all the way to the heaviest hard cast lead for Alaskan Brown Bear protection. Starline has brass for the 40 Super. A word of caution this round does not like double stack Glock magazines unless they have a certain older style follower, the rounds nosedive and then there is a failure to feed, this info is available online(see link below). Single stack Glock mags do not have this issue if you are using this round in a carry gun.

For interest's sake: The 230 @ 1110 ft/sec. equals 630 ft.lb energy. The 200 grain @ 1340 equals 800 f.lb.. The 185 grain @ 1315 ft/sec. equals 710 ft.lb. The 135 grain @ 1540 also equals about 710 ft.lb. The gel performance of the 185gr, 45 Super and the 200gr, 10mm Auto are very similar. I think on can assume that the terminal performance of the cartridges tested here are very similar, aside possibly from the 135 grain which did expand rather too quickly.

  • @johnmohanmusic
    @johnmohanmusic Před rokem

It appears that the Revolver Guy 185 Grain .45 Super bullet entered the gel within millimeters of where the Underwood 235 grain .45 Super bullet entered. If so it shared part of the same wound track for the first several inches of gel. If this is the case, it makes the penetration comparison between the two meritless because at least part of the 185 grain's extra penetration is due to less gel resistance where it was going through the previously created wound track from the 230 grain. I understand that gel costs money, but firing multiple major caliber bullets into the same gel block rarely can lead to accurate comparisons. Even if the bullets have completely different tracks, the gel is compromised after the first shot is put through it (except perhaps in the case of rather anemic rounds such as .22, .25, .32, or perhaps .380).

Two excellent cartridges for men who don't squat to pee! I love me some Underwood 10mm! Their 200 gr XTP loading has been my EDC load for about a decade. I have taken several deer with it and I know it works. The XTP is a good bullet for high speed loads in .357 Mag, 10mm, .45 Super, ect. The Nosler looks like it just isn't intended for those velocities. The 200 gr Nosler 10mm load did really well, but both the others didn't penetrate to my liking. I typically look for 16 to 18 inches of penetration in bare gel for a carry load, and won't scoff at 20 inches if I might hunt with it, as long as it still achieves requisite 1.5x caliber expansion.
