In a recent study, 30 grams of xylitol was consumed as a drink after fasting. There was no conclusion from this study - despite the media headlines - only that, "[the study] does not show that xylitol caused a higher incidence of heart attack, stroke or death."‹What the study shows is that 30 grams of xylitol, after a fast, in certain subjects, can activate platelets in their blood (this amount is equal to having 60 Zellie’s mints in minutes). Platelets contribute to wound healing by helping to clot blood. We do not know the general health, age, or, more importantly, the oral health of the study subjects; or if they were taking medication.
My oral health recommendation has been - and will continue to be - 1 to 2 grams of xylitol five times a day, after meals, for a total of between 5 to 10 grams per day. Every human body produces 15 grams of xylitol by a metabolism daily process. There have been countless studies over many decades showing the safety of xylitol.
The article highlighted various sugar-substitutes and their use in processed and baked goods, sodas, ice cream, and more. It discussed risks associated with excess consumption and the possible effect on individuals with health conditions, or taking medications.
I understand the concerns and hope this message has helped to clarify the potential disparity between my enthusiasm for xylitol and the surprise generated by this article.

@@gohawks3571 I am furious because in fact one of the WORST risk factors for heart disease is periodontal gum disease that IS curable with xylitol and my system of care - but not without the help of xylitol.
The other thing I know is xylitol is one of the most expensive sugar alternatives and rarely used in quantity.
I think Zellies and Spry were some of the first to use 100% xylitol in products -because of the price.

Thanks, Dr. Ellie! I'm 4 or 5 weeks in to using the complete system. When I began, I had quite a bit of tartar buildup, especially on my lower incisors and a lot of coffee staining. Additionally, I have receding gums in a number of places. I've always been diligent about brushing at least twice daily but I haven't always had regular dental visits because I did not have access to insurance and I frankly have invested better in the dental health of my family over my own. Within days of using your complete system (with the original Listerine), I noticed that the tartar buildup was dissolving and the stains were lifting. I know that you don't advocate using dental floss, but, after using your system for a couple of weeks I've begun periodically flossing in the areas of the worst tartar and staining (between my lower incisors) ... those stains and that tartar are nearly completely gone now! Likewise, I'm beginning to notice my gum line improving ... an area over my right front tooth on top is nearly closed and there is no darker line visible at the top of that tooth now. I am watching the changes in my gums around my lower molars as well. This is amazing. I am now beginning to watch for improvements to some fracture lines that I have had in my enamel for many years. I'll report back! I'm in awe of how well this works. You have my deepest gratitude!

Be aware there no scientific backing of her claim, listerine was originally meant for other purposes and alcohol that is one of its main ingredients been linked to mouth cancer, and can be irritant for some individuals. Additionally many of these contain colouring that has been linked to other health concerns.
With that said Overall her program is
      - step 1: 100% xylitol gum
      - step 2: One mouth wash of chlorine dioxide
      - step 3: toothpaste plus 1100ppm Fluoride based on Sodium *
      - step 4: alcohol based mouthwash
      - step 5: mouthwash with 225ppm Fluoride - sodium based*
      * Hers recommends are sweeten with Sorbitol - research show it might be beneficial for good bacteria growth
The alternative for Closys is Ultradex if not avaliable Oxyfresh Cavity Protection is the alternative (same bacteria handling ingredient of chlorine dioxide)
Alternative to Crest toothpaste are many and depends on region, however avoid one with glycerine & SLS, only brand I seen ever without both are Woom, Meridol & Ecome plus a few bio and vegan oriented brands.
If you want one with Xylitol there is the Pepsodent Xylitol among others it has SLS but so dos Crest. Unfortunately hard finding similar without SLS
Oral B cavity is the most alike but also has SLS today.
ACT is a little more tricky but Colgate Fluorigard daily rinse is the closest I yet to find and alternative would be Active Gentle mouth rinse, Meridol gum protection sensitive all have the same 225ppm fluoride, as it is found in ACT but neither are Sorbitol sweetened as ACT and the Colgate version, all are alcohol free as ACT
100% Xylitol is easy to find and several supermarkets and drug stores sell it.

Thank you Dr. Phillips. I’ve been using your complete mouth care system for 6 months now while incorporating the other strategies of giving my saliva time with my teeth and xylitol after meals.
Now my teeth were in really rough shape. 1 root canal and almost every tooth has or will need a filling. My future was looking very dark.
Now I haven’t been to the dentist for a complete x ray of my mouth to compare 6 months ago to now. That’s happening next week. I’m praying the dentist has good news for me.
But I will say that my teeth are looking brighter and they feel bigger and stronger and my mouth feels so clean! 🙂🙂. I can’t tell if my cavities are “healing” or not as the area is still dark but looks like it’s changed. Maybe lighter brown?
But my teeth still look yellow 😞 not as yellow as they did before but not bright and white either.
Is there anything else I could be doing?
I just want a beautiful bright smile and this process has been so stressful. But I’m not giving up.

For those, like me, who are ultra-sensitive to it, it's nasty. Like my insides are being all twisted up. The other foods on the high FODMAP list don't seem to affect me like xylitol does. Stopping a cavity or stopping periodontal disease - it all stems from a bacterial imbalance in the mouth.
Xylitol and my system of oral care will correct this imbalance over 3-6 months.
For periodontal disease you need to work on gum brushing or massage - which stimulates the periodontal fibers to seal up the gaps between your teeth and the gums.

Thank you so much Dr. Ellie !
I have been using your complete oral system for 7 weeks and the problem with my molar #36 which had a crown 7 months ago ( apparently with 6 mm pocket 2 month ago , but it seems less pocket now) is pain free now. There was a mild tooth pain initially 3 month ago but no pain at all after using your system. The teeth #36 and 37 both floating a bit ( both are crowned, #37 was done 3 & half years ago). #36 became infected after the crown due to the wrong bite ( X-rays show progressing bone loss in 2 months period) Endodontis suggests a root canal with 50% success rate due to significant bone loss , or tooth to be extracted if there is a crack found during root canal.
Do you suggest CBCT on #36 before root canal?
I’m a 66 yr old woman and would do anything to save my tooth. My question is ; should I postpone the root canal which is scheduled in 2 weeks ? Is it possible the infection inside the tooth will disappear as I continue your system twice a day? The tooth is necrotic and infected, with abscess flowing through the end of the roots, as per dentist. ( never was any bad smell neither severe pain) Your story about the Down syndrome girl saving all of her teeth is unbelievable😊. Please advise. Thank you again.

Most of them have glycerin as an ingredient - which is not ideal as it may interfere with mineralization.
Also, others are too abrasive - as they are using a cheaper kind of silica which is very granular.
I have not yet found one I can truly recommend.

Hey Dr Ellie. Why is some tooth decay rock hard and slow progressing? I work in care and look after disabled people. There is this one guy I've been looking after for 15yrs. He will allow you to quickly brush his front teeth but not the back ones. As a result his back molars are decaying. He's got two lower first molars that have been slowly decaying for 15yrs now. Recently part of one broke off. I managed to get a light and a dental pick in there. When investigating the broken tooth it was half black and decayed right down to the gum, but the decay is rock solid. I always thought decay was soft? He's never been in any pain at all. His other molar has a tiny bit of tooth decay no bigger than the head of a dental pick, and it has barely gotten any bigger in 15yrs. So, how come some people's tooth decay is rock hard and it takes many years for their teeth to decay? Thank you.

I had a dark line on the side of an upper last molar and the hygienist claimed it was decay that had healed itself. More than one hygienist has told me this. This was over 20 yrs. ago. I still have the dark line and it hasn't changed. I have good dental hygiene though.

@@t.augburn12 Don't judge. We have dentists come in but disabled people are often hard to control and very strong. It is quite common for them to kick off a huge fuss get violent and bite. As a result dentists can't really do much. We can't go around sedating or restraining them either as it's against the law. Also, domiciliary dental care (Where a dentist visits you as you aren't capable of visiting a dentist) is often limited due the fact they don't have and can't carry around dental drills etc. They just use hand tools.
