    When I was a child, my father would take me to a dentist for cleaning every six months as recommended by the crooked dental association in canada at the time. And nearly every time I went, the crooked dentist "found" a cavity or two that required a much more expensive fillings than just cleaning. So sadly, I have a mouthful of fillings. I learned he was a lyer when I was a teenager and one appointment he told me I had THREE cavities! I had braces at the time and had my Orthodontist appointment a few days later, so I told him that I'd come back next week after exams. He told me not to wait too long as the cavities would get worse. When I saw my Orthodontist I asked if I had any cavities and she said no! I never returned to that crooked dentist and didn't go to any dentist until I was an adult and had dental coverage through my work. When I did return to a dentist over 20 years later for a cleaning, that dentist asked when the last time I had a cleaning was and told me my teeth are fantastic when I told him over 20 years ago.
    So parents, ALWAYS get a second opinion when your child's dentist tells you they have cavities.

      It is quite possible dentists ruined my teeth in my childhood, which is pretty sad because as a mature age woman I have many molar fillings. I had a filling fall out last week and the dentist rebuilt a new tooth for which I am grateful, but she told me I need to come back for a teeth clean and that she saw another issue she needed to work on. To,d me not to wait till something goes wrong. That tooth reconstruction cost me $824 for a 30 minute job! I use xylitol mints during the day and clean my teeth with xylitol toothpaste. I am not going back to that dentist!

      I dont know what her protocol is but I started taking vitmin k and stopped getting plaque and I started using l argenine for sensitivity since my kid got horrific sensitive teeth from using sensodyne they even say it on their website. I also take magnesium and vit c and ginko biloba and cayenne pepper for opening the blood supply of small vessels in gums and teeth. I also then eat a load of chocolate and have to stop that and get some zylotol instead and get raw cacao..it can make you create more stem cells which hopefully will help my gums and I have used comphrey and horsetail but I have fallen off the wagon with everything nowadays and feeling everything is worse because of my sugar munching. My joints my muscles everything. So must get back on track.

      The back lower and upper teeth would fill with plaque as soon as i left my dentist for a cleaning. It annoyed me constantly. Scraping it with my fingers, towel , baby tooth brush. A bit OCD about it. Now with this system, teeth are very clean back there. And the one thing I am struggling with is not sipping drinks all day and eating etc. So hard. Especially considering i have Sjogrens Syndrome and thirsty alot.

      @@katharinedodson9330 so that hugely depends on many factors. Your weight height body mass ...activity level.... what you're eating...soup stew jelly?..... and how much you're drinking with your meal....a med diet you'd be eating for quite a while many courses including soup and watery foods like fruit ice cream all of which contain water and ypu don't need 2literrs of water to be plain in a glass it can be in a bowl of soup or a jelly. So of course many people do this..if you think about it for thousands of years we didn't even drink water at all... untill bottled water it was not common....people might have a glass once a year on a sunny day and for thousands of years people worked all day in the feilds having zero water only beer and soup... eaten at meal times only... they weren't bringing their Stanley cup to the feilds. Thus drinking water thing is relatively recent stuff. And in no way is 2 litre of water nessisary for everyone or adequate for everyone either!

      Generally I have not found support from dentists along my 50 year journey - and I have been saying EXACTLY the same thing since 1970.
      Most DDS believed sugar was the problem - and could not believe diet drinks as sugar-free - could be a bigger problem.
      Today most DDS are enamored with nanohydroxyapatite and whitening teeth -
      I don't know how long before this dangerous combination will be realized for what it is.
      Do dentists really believe that whitening teeth is safe?

    Spectacular video! I've been learning so much about the gut microbiome the past few months, and how what we eat influences our health. This video popped into my feed and it's so fascinating to learn about how oral health and gut health go hand in hand. This quote towards the end stood out to me so much:
    "There are foods you know you should be eating but perhaps you don't know why."
    I grew up with adults scolding me to eat healthy without me truly understanding why. I know vegetables and exercise are good for you, but it was so easy to just dismiss it and indulge in the normal American diet/lifestyle - fast food, sweets and snacks all the time, sitting at chair for hours, being sedintary for days. But now, as I learn about the microbiome, sugar spikes and dips, inflammation, fiber, eating a diverse range of foods, what exercise actually does for the body, etc. I feel so uplifted. I've never cared so much about my health and am now living a lifestyle I wish I started sooner. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and expertise. It's certainly making a difference in the lives of people like me.

    I have a theory that chewing properly during meals is vital to tooth health and digestion. I remember from school learning that "digestion begins in the mouth" with saliva and proper chewing. The chewing motion stimulates blood flow to your gums and jaw where your healthy teeth come from in the first place. My wife is a "wolfer" and eats too quickly without chewing enough and her teeth are problematic her whole life dispite diligent oral care and regular dentists visits. I have only 2 fillings installed when I was 14 and at 62 years old have flawless teeth and I am a chewer, even a slice of bread or porridge. I love chewing and eating so much, I tell her, that I take long to eat. I would love to hear your take on this Dr. Ellie.

      The longer you chew, the more pressure and stress you put on your teeth. The tougher the food you eat, same thing happens.
      Fiber, as I understand it, is not particularly good for oral health.
      Also, our stomach acid is excellent at digesting meat very easily, so less chewing is necessary. Since going carnivore I haven't had any teeth or gum problems.

You also see things from a truly holistic perspective which is so important and refreshing. One thing I will add. You mentioned Akkermansia and that you cannot get it as a probiotic. This was true up until very recently. But a company has now found a way to put it into a capsule. I still believe in lifestyle and diet for supporting it. But it can be a game changer initially. Thank you so much for this interesting and helpful information! It is life changing for me. I was really worried about my mouth, but the standard dentist advice just felt wrong and had never worked for me. I'm amazed how much change I've seen since I started using your system. My gums were bleeding every time I brushed, teeth were sensitive and breath was gross. Just two weeks in and no more bleeding, inflammation or bad breath! My teeth feel healthier than ever and less crowded, somehow? Maybe my gums were just that inflamed. I can't wait to see what happens as time goes on.
    I do notice sometimes I'll have a spot in my gums get irritated and inflamed for a day or so, then calm down and feel better. Is this normal? Wondering if it's just pockets of infection clearing out.

      Congratulations for getting organized and starting to use this system.
      I am delighted that you see such quick results -evidence that you are on a good pathway.
      The first month usually changes the composition of the biofilm on teeth - and then over the next 5 months you'll be making lasting changes to the entire flora (bacterial community of your mouth).
      Always consider nasal health as a part of oral health - and xylitol nasal sprays can be a useful addition to the program as you feel more confident and see these positive changes.
      I have an oral health video bootcamp at DrEllie.com where people learn more about nutrition for oral health and also how to do salivary Oral DNA testing through me. You may enjoy this community and learn a few more things to help you on this journey :)

    • @dr.elliephillips
      @dr.elliephillips  Před 4 měsíci +11

      Yes xylitol is wonderful as an ending to meals - as it stimulates a flow of healing saliva into the mouth.
      You do not want to chew this gum for too long.
      You want the saliva stimulation ( from the xylitol's hygroscopic nature) but if you continue to chew for a long time - the saliva will be generated by the parotid gland - and this is saliva "designed" for digestion. This is not the same composition - and it appears to dilute the healing saliva.
      This is not a problem if you spit out the gum after 2-10 minutes.
      Zellies mints (Zellies.com or Amazon) are mints that I formulated with xylitol - a product I began to recommend over 25 years ago!

    I believe in you Dr. Ellie. My family is benefiting from your advice. We have incorporated every teaching, except the youngest kids don’t do the listerine. Thank you for this video! Idk if you’ve shared mewing on your channel, this would be good info for your listeners if they haven’t heard of it. My teeth have always been incredibly straight and healthy and once I found out about mewing I realized that’s my natural way of keeping my tongue in my mouth my whole life, thank God. My youngest boy is 3 years old, I think you’ve covered mouth breathing, and since I diligently (tiring-ly) checked on him every night to turn him on his side and help him keep his lips closed, he now does it on his own 99% of nights and his teeth have straightened tremendously in the past year! Plus he does his closys and Colgate without being bothered too much by the toothpaste anymore. To any parents out there: don’t make brushing stressful, you have to bring joy into it somehow and use a sandtimer so they have a visual of their goal, plus I only encouraged my 3 year old to let me brush his for about 5 secs top and 5 seconds bottom (counting happily out loud) to get used to the toothpaste and we haven’t made it to 2 minutes yet but he tolerates it longer than he did at first! He always gets a big high-five and hug at the end too! Also! Every time we start closys I stop the kids and remind them, “we are moving this around in our mouths for 1 minute, do not drink it do not swallow it, we spit it out, this is NOT water.” I think the reminder is necessary because I even have myself think about it first so I’m not just going through the motions and forget since it tastes like water! This will all be worth it and our children will thank us for caring for their teeth consistently. Nana tries to bring kidflavored toothpaste into our home and I’m adamant about saying “no, our kids health is more important than their instant gratification through strawberry-rainbow-glitter that does no more than put artificial ingredients in their mouth”. I lovingly have to remind her Dr. Ellie says no other toothpaste is exactly formulated to remineralize our teeth and she reluctantly respects me in this. I know this is a lot to read but healthy teeth in my children excites me 😁 Tooth care has been a journey in itself but it leads to freedom and peace for everyone. Thanks again, Dr. Ellie ❤
    One more thing! Xylitol gum is a prize here for eating your food and taking your vitamins. My kids love the xxl fruit flavor packs you can buy on Amazon. I hope this is a correct alternative to Zellies. Zellies does have citrus flavor that’s good too. Now if I can only get nana to stop buying candies and colorful cereals every weekend 😅

      fluoride free toothpaste is healthier for everyone..

    • @fastrabbitcrochet
      @fastrabbitcrochet Před 4 měsíci

      @@sunshinedayz2172 from my experience, we went to a dentist to see where we were at with our kids mainly because I was pressured by norms. No one was in pain but I knew there were cavities in two of my kids mouths. One child went through extensive antibiotics as a baby and I know that directly relates to her problems with cavities and constipation. After taking that dentists advice I finally put away all our nano silver fluoride free whatever different kinds I bought hoping to help their teeth and we started using a fluoride toothpaste (before I found Dr. Ellie) both kids with cavities got more cavities and it was just crazy the negative impact it seemed like only the change in toothpaste caused because we truly didn’t change anything else in the months following the dentist visit. So I tossed the fluoride toothpastes and found doctor ellie and started using her system. I believe the mouth washes and xylitol gum play a big part in the success of her recommendations. We all use the exact Colgate she calls for and my choice of fluoride toothpaste previously was obviously not formulated correctly. One thing the second dentist we went to for a second opinion (before Dr. Ellie) said stuck with me. “If you are going to eat the way the world does, you have to use the product that helps your teeth battle against that, if you eat whole vegetables and meats and only drink with meals and stay away from all the sugar and processed foods then use the fluoride free natural toothpastes that work for that lifestyle.” It was a lightbulb moment like wow I’m an idiot (not to say you are, I’m talking about personal reflection), if I’m going to be lax about cookies and candy and things totally unnatural coming in my home from well-meaning neighbors and our nana, then I have to make choices considering that. The goal is to change our habits for the better and one day benefit from no fluoride. If their mouths had not improved so much like previous cavities completely stopping and not black and still no pains then I still wouldn’t know what to do. This is working for us. (Plus I have great teeth and there’s no way I ever brushed with nonflouride toothpaste for 23 years of my life until I learned about flouride. My parents teeth are both great in their 60’s and they use Colgate and listerine. They do not consider naturopathic things, my mom kind of does but my dad won’t hear any of it. If something is working don’t change it is how I think he is. Genes, yes, thankful for my mouth heredity, but there’s got to be more to it than just inherited good or bad teeth.

    I will never have teeth cleaning again because a few years ago the dentist routinely did one after a minor filling without even asking me! It hurt afterwards for days and sensitised my teeth for a long time. I clean my teeth with xylitol toothpaste and have xylitol mints during the day (from Naturally Sweet online). Btw, I eat the carnivore diet and am a 69 y/o woman in Australia. I think this video is done by a vegan by the way she talks about food. I have eliminated vegetables and fruit and am much healthier and my gut no longer has digestive problems!

      Maybe it wasn't your dentist, but your diet that destroyed your teeth. Humans are not carnivores, we are omnivores by nature, so a strictly meat diet is as unhealthy as a strictly vegan diet. As humans, we ought to eat everything nature provides us to be healthy - meat, fish, vegetables, fruits, herbs, tubers, grains, nuts, etc. some type of oil (a little bit of butter, coconut oil, olive oil, etc.) are all good within a balanced diet. The only things we need to avoid in our diets is foods with extra added sugar and overly processed foods, so it's best to cook your meals from scratch if you have the time to do so. And brush your teeth 3 times a day at minimum.
