  • Do you actually need a teeth cleaning? Well it depends, but if you have a healthy mouth and use the proper systems, rinses and brushing habits you do not need to have a dentist clean your teeth. Now, when do you need a deep cleaning? Well I explain, but it can be a money trap when you start needing deep cleaning. The good news is there is a way out of it.

I use organic, non-GMO Olive oil as a mouthwash. Olive oil gets rid of cavities🦷 ....then 4 hours later I will mix 8 ounces of steam distilled water with 1 teaspoon of Chlorine dioxide (Cl°2) as a mouthwash to get rid of any biofilm on my teeth.

Dr. Ellie, I’ve been using your system for five months, as I noticed tartar behind my three front teeth in my lower jaw several months ago. The tartar is loosening. However, the edges of the tartar are rough. My tongue is often very sore in the morning from contacting the rough edges of tartar while sleeping. I plan to continue your system for a few more months in hopes that the rough edges of tartar dissolve. If the rough edges remain, I think I’ll have to get a dental cleaning. I have noticed that chewing your xylitol gum helps to alleviate the discomfort during the day. Any suggestions you may have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

I’ve been on Dr Ellie’s regimen (xylitol gum after eating/drinking and her mouthwash regimen 2x a day) for a little over 6 months and had 2 regular cleanings in that time period that have went well in that my gums are no longer bleeding during cleaning (it’s been bleeding for YEARS and they would say I have so much plaque). Recently, the hygienist wrote “gen min plaque” on their notes. I still have some ways to go since I have recession, pockets, etc. but it’s a big step in the right direction. Thank you so much to Dr Ellie for spreading her information and explaining the science behind it - as my dentist never did- I only found Dr Ellie after my dentist/hygienist had given me NO hope, no solution other than scolding me to "floss more" and said I needed to see a specialist.

I’ve been on the complete system for about 5 months now and will muster up the courage to visit dentist soon but am hoping that dental cleans will be minimally required since they include numbing injections and am very wary of those in general. Having been getting them so frequently for decades now and together with that helpless feeling of not knowing how to improve conditions, on my last visit I said I didn’t quite understand why there never seemed any noted improvement even though I conscientiously took care of brushing and interdental cleaning .. but all the feedback I get is the implication I’m not doing it well enough.
I’ve avoided two dental cleans so far as would like to give the biofilm a chance if only to help preserve what I have left of my teeth gums etc!
I do feel, hope, this synergistic process so well researched and so perfectly explained by Dr Ellie will prove so very worthwhile. Am so grateful and more hopeful now.

I use oregano oil with minimum 70% carvacrol and diluted in olive oil on my toothbrush every time I brush. It kills all of the germs on my toothbrush and it keeps my gums free of periodontal disease. I only use a small dab of toothpaste on top of the oregano to brush with.

I have no fillings at age 49. A dentist when I was 20 overreacted saying I needed a filling immediately, his manner made me question it so I didn't go back, waited years before another cleaning from another dentist. They said I had a small cavity and need it to be filled soon... that was 29 years ago and I still haven't filled that tooth! My teeth are very healthy and I brush extremely well, floss when I feel something stuck. Gums are super healthy.
The Dentist industry is built on doing things to your teeth that aren't necessary in many cases. Obviously sometimes it's required but here I am turning 50 and still haven't filled the tiny little filling that I've had 7 or 8 dentists tell me I should have filled. And I have no other cavities.

I found it easier to use those individual flossers that were originally made for those with dental braces rather than regular dental floss.
I also found that a soft toothbrush is gentler on your gums than a firmer brush. Many people don't think of this, but when you're gums bleed after brushing, your brushing away bits and pieces of your gums. Many don't realize that using too hard of a brush and brushing too hard on top of that is why gums are receding. All the more reason to use a soft toothbrush, they're just GENTLER. When I discovered how good a soft toothbrush is, I never looked back. These days it's rare. I ever used anything firmer because now the soft bristle is the way to go.

So in another year it’ll be one visit in a decade . I floss only when something is obviously stuck . I use a natural toothpaste w no fluoride or SLS or glycerin. I just eat healthy . Don’t smoke or do anything that depletes minerals like consume soda , no alcohol either . My teeth are also naturally straight which I’m just lucky to have .

Thank you so much for explaining this problem with pockets and gum recession and bone loss, all so well. It makes a lot of sense. What a wonderful synergy you’ve come up with, a godsend you might say.
Having a new system in place, so well explained, feels like nothing short of just that.
I thought I would give it another couple of months before my next checkup since I feel the system is definitely working and yet I am sure I will be told to have a deep clean indeed like you mention as maintenance. Fair enough but i sincerely hope avoidable.
Listening to the pocket count etc is quite nerve-racking and recently dental cleans include numbing injections which I really am not comfortable with at all in more ways than one. For now am reassured by how clean and smooth my teeth feel and will have to muster up some courage to make my next appointment but would like to pass the 6 month period or even year before doing so.
Thank you so much for this wonderful enlightening clarification once again.

I said yes it was, but I was asking a question on her behalf, as she wouldn't know to ask questions.. also it clearly wasn't her choice as he was 'telling her' what he was doing. He then said, 'there's more radiation in one banana'.. but not explaining this reference.. I looked this up and that's not quite true! The thing is, because dental care is free for her age in the UK, they can claim back the money so they want to do the 'full package'... maximum claim in other words.. he's doing a night guard too as she clenches, this means another £300 claim on top for him. Just put me off, I need to go for a check up but I don't want to now. The dental nurse looked embarrassed and kept smiling at me. @@jujjuj7676 Science is a process of discovering what God created in the first place!
The healing strategies I suggest allow our mouth/ body to heal itself.
There is NO oral care product that can heal your teeth or your mouth - but your own saliva can.
The products I recommend simply speed and help this Natural process.
The problem is that "scientists" have overlooked the power of Natural Healing for the past two hundred years - trying to formulate a toothpaste or mouth rinse that could achieve the things your saliva achieves by itself all day long!
It is our human foolishness and stupid habits that get in the way of Natural Healing - that is where the problems originate.
It is closed minded people and proud scientists who miss the secret to life and to this amazing way of healing.
I see myself on a mission - and I thank you for your comment. My goal is to help others see how amazing Natural Healing can be - and I am happy to be a doctor and scientist who has been blessed by ongoing instruction at the highest level - so that I was able to understand the latest oral health science. I think most people have much to share - and it is rarely helpful to tell others to "grow up".

I'm wondering if you have any data on how much the strep mutans and other bad bacteria are reduced in peoples'' mouths who are using your system ( after 6 months or a year) versus the levels they had prior to using it. It must be quite a lot. I've seen studies just using xylitol where those bacteria are reduced more than 20% after 6 months. I am hoping your system will allow me stop getting cleanings at some point. The dentist never even sees me because I never have cavities.

I'm glad I found your channel. Here's my story. 71 yrs old. I'll start at the beginning and go forward with the short version. From 21 yrs old to 38 no teeth cleaning. In that period I had all my bottom molars out and two top wisdom teeth. I have all top molars and all bottoms, again except bottom molars. Reason I had molars out is fillings came out and I ignored due to childhood fear of general dentist and the pain. Back then the dentist I went to as a child would drill with no anesthetic used, then the amalgam. And root canals were out of the question so just had them pulled. So, over 17 yrs no cleaning and teeth out. Then I went to a dentist for a cleaning at 38 yrs old. Mega plaque on some teeth removed. From then on until now cleanings every six mos and sometimes 4 times/year. So you know with no bottom molars the top teeth will begin to drop. All the teeth I have left are in top condition as well as the gums. No periodontal disease. I have no loose teeth, bleeding gums when flossing, which is seldom. But I have pockets forming with the upper molars dropping as I have the lack of bottom teeth pushing up against them. I have viritually no plaque when I get scaled on any teeth. Likely, due to diet and genetics. Most of the pockets are 2-4's. Three 6's on the top molars. Fast forward to Dec. 2023 cleaning visit. Went for a regular cleaning. I missed the last two cleanings due to them cancelling for various reasons. So, it's been 8 mos since. She charts me takes bicuspids pics. Gets me ready for a cleaning and then she says the dentist wants to see me before the cleaning. Not the owner as I usually have but her employee dentist. He examines and says all looks very good BUT your pocket are deep and you have bone loss on the top and shows me the honey comb bone on pics. He says I need a deep cleaning on the top. I say nothing has changed at all in that area. He says you still need a deep cleaning and if you don't you'll lose your uppers in time. I retort and say I disagree with the deep cleaning and don't care if I lose the uppers. I don't need a deep cleaning. He said then unless you want to schedule the quadrants done then there is no reason for a cleaning. I go home. My wife was a 30 year, now retired dental assistant for one dentist the whole time. He closed his practice, retired. She's upset why didn't he clean the other teeth. I don't know? That night I'm on CZcams as usual. I stumble onto one of your video's, your complete system. I'm a nerd for clinical studies. Sit sometimes hours reading them on various nutrition subjects and other things. Learned many of the biochemical terms, pathways and physiologic lingo. I check out much of what you say. Quite amazed to say the least. So, Saturday I go to the pharmacy and get all the products you reco and order at Amazon the Xylitol mints and gum. Only thing I've varied on your program is using Gum brand soft plastic proxy brushes between teeth, as I have space enough X teeth to use easily. No flossing. I dumped the dentist got a new one in the following week and transferred records to another. The appointment is in March. That will make about a year without a cleaning. I will be very interested to see the results with gums/teeth. I will report results back in March. Thank You

Here are the results after 6 months. I am 66 years old. I have had dental issues all my life and I dread every visit to the dentist. It seemed no matter what I did I had to sit and endure the scraping, micro pressure wash and scolding for not brushing enough or flossing enough, etc.
After 6 months of following Dr. Ellie’s program, things have changed. “Gums are in excellent condition.” There is calculus in the deeper pockets, but this is “normal as there is no home care regime that can clean below a 2mm pocket”. “You need to floss”. :-)
Did I need a cleaning? Yes, but it was very brief.
Did I follow Dr. Ellie’s system to the letter? No.
Here is what may have contributed to the less than perfect outcome I was hoping for.
      1) I used my own homemade Xylitol mouth rinse and candy. For the first few months the candy I made had citric acid and dextrose in the flavoring I was using. DOH!
      2) I experimented on and off, with a toothpaste that was not recommended by Dr. Ellie. The Crest Cavity Protection sometimes irritated my gums so I tried to find a toothpaste without SLS. I have been using Made By Dentists Kids Toothpaste as it had the same active ingredients as the Crest without the SLS.
      3) I use a Sonicare toothbrush.
Going forward I plan to do make one obvious change. That is to just buy the Xylitol mints online and I not use any Xylitol mouth rinse.
I don’t know what to do about the toothpaste. And I have become partial to the Sonicare and can’t imagine giving that up.
My thanks to Dr. Ellie for helping me make the most successful change to my oral health in my life. Any feedback on what changes I can make in the next 6 months is appreciated.

I’ve been on the complete system for about 5 months now and will muster up the courage to visit dentist soon but am hoping that dental cleans will be minimally required since they include numbing injections and am very wary of those in general. Having been getting them so frequently for decades now and together with that helpless feeling of not knowing how to improve conditions, on my last visit I said I didn’t quite understand why there never seemed any noted improvement even though I conscientiously took care of brushing and interdental cleaning .. but all the feedback I get is the implication I’m not doing any of it well enough.
I’ve avoided two dental cleans so far as would like to give the biofilm a chance if only to help preserve what I have left of my teeth gums etc!
I do feel, hope, this synergistic process so well researched and so perfectly explained by Dr Ellie will prove so very worthwhile. Am so grateful and more hopeful now.

going to the dentist should never cause people that much emotional trauma and financial trouble.
many people don’t have insurance if any at all, and if they do and it does cover some basic procedures, it barely makes a difference compared to what’s paid out of pocket.
and you’re forced to pay those prices in the United States and some other places. there’s no other options unless you want to lose all your teeth.

We have 3 insurances to try and make our payments reasonable, and it's still expensive and each insurance costs also..
Everybody who has health insurance needs to look and see if their health insurance also includes a little bit of dental because many health insurances do but many people don't know that. So before you go through your dental insurance, make sure to tell the dental office to Bill your medical insurance first for whatever they will pay, and then move on to bill your dental insurance.. it's all about the order in which they submit the pre-authorizations in.

I've never had a better toothpaste, the plaque was gone so fast, as well as dental sensitivity and it whitened my teeth better than anything I have ever tried before. Basic ingredients were food grade diatomaceous earth, organic extra virgin coconut oil, distilled water, monkfruit sugar-its good for dental health too and then I add whatever essential oil I want to flavor it with. @@kmars3239 Awww, I made the toothpaste myself with the ingredients listed. While I do actually plan on making some to sell, I am not at that stage yet. Here are the baseline amounts that can be altered for flavor. I have not yet worked out exact measurements lol I am older culinary creationist who doesnt tend to measure anything anymore, I taste as I create. So for the toothpaste, if it's not sweet enough, add more sweetener, if it doesnt mix well add more water and for flavoring just add enough essential oil until it tastes the way you like.
To make smaller batches just reduce all ingredients.
2 cups food grade diatomaceous earth(if you buy it from an animal store in bulk, it is very inexpensive)
1/3 c organic extra virgin coconut oil
monkfruit sugar to sweeten- add by the tblsp spoon until desired sweetness is achieved
essential oil such as peppermint, cinnamon, clove ect.
distilled water-added as needed for desired consistency.

Is the amount of sorbitol in the ACT negligible or can this be counteracted in some other way? Or am I getting the wrong ACT? It's the smaller "anticavity" green bottle The ACT directions say not to eat or drink for 30 minutes after using, but you say to take xylitol afterward - should it be right after, or should it wait for 30 minutes?
I've been doing this since October and got some 1's and 2's for the first time I can remember at my last appointment, though still some 3's and 4's in places. The dentist didn't think I needed a deep cleaning, so hopefully I am on the right trajectory. I began using Xylitol simply because I was using one of arm and hammer's toothpaste that was so potent with baking soda that it produced a mild stinging sensation. But it was the best whitening toothpaste I've eve used, so I didn't want to stop. The Xylitol had a cooling affect, and the sweetness was a plus. However, interestingly enough, I had a cap on one of my back tooths, which I always avoided chewing on due to mild gum sensitivity. After some while, I realized I was chewing on the darn thing when I ate, and didn't even realize it, because I had no more sensitivity, no pain, nothing. Xylitol is a must in dental hygiene.

Hello Dr. Ellie. How long does it take for your biofilm to redevelop after a peroidontal cleaning?

    • @dr.elliephillips
      @dr.elliephillips  Před 5 měsíci +3

This depends on the health of your body, saliva flow and protein content, your diet and daily habits.
IF you are using my complete mouth care system, are using Zellies at the end of meals, and you do not eat or drink ANYTHING between meals ( not even sips of water) - then you should find biofilm begins to cover your teeth and offer protection from sensitivity after about 5 days.
I have not had a dental cleaning in 45 years - so my biofilm will be more "mature" than it would be after 5 days.
There are very few studies to show what are the differences between mature biofilm and recently formed biofilm.
We need these studies to know if frequent dental cleanings are doing us more harm than we imagine.

A previous dentist twenty something years ago taught me about the importance of daily low pressure sub gingival irrigation with multiple alternate effective anti microbial agents. These days my gums are too tight for a endodontic needle or cannula. I have been using a curved tip syringe at the gum line for many years now. With excellent results. I wish I had known about it before the root canals and crowns. Would have saved me a lot of money and spared me a lot of easily avoided pain and misery. But if you have implants then irrigation is even more important.

Would this be the type of case that (at this stage) you’d recommend still having the deep cleaning? Of course, I’d rather not have them and intend to continue diligently following your programme. Nb. @hoon_sol Před 5 měsíci +8

Well, she says 12-24 weeks, which would be ~3-6 months, but perhaps your case is particularly bad. Could also be other habits you have, it's not easy to tell in the case of any given individual. Personally I've found general diet and overall state of the body to be very important to in terms of acid-base theory (which is gaining increasing recognition even in mainstream medical studies); when you eat a lot of acid-forming forming foods your tissues will tend to acidify with time due to the inability of the kidneys to keep up and thus the interstitial fluids becoming more acidic, which can lead to more acidic saliva and less of the alkaline minerals to spare.
A diet heavy in acid-forming foods has been associated in a lot of evidence over the past decades with various disease conditions, like cancers and kidney disease. So if I were you I'd make sure to eat a diet rich in base-forming foods, i.e. alkalizing foods, you can find lots of lists showing which foods are acid-forming and which are base-forming if you look for lists of so-called PRAL (potential renal acid load) values, where negative values signifiy base-forming foods and positive values signify acid-forming foods. Base-forming foods also tend to be ones that have immediate bioactivities that can be helpful against harmful bacteria too, like various herbs that have been known to have medicinal qualities for centuries and even millennia.
I also personally would ditch any product containing fluoride due to its neurotoxicity and due to its incompatibility with the crystalline structure of the teeth, but I know that goes against Ellie's particular recommendations, so I doubt you'd get an endorsement from her on that; I personally use nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste instead, and I'd also use something like Simply Silver instead of ACT for the same reason.

Hey, I really appreciate you taking the time to write such a helpful reply. I am doing other things that Dr Ellie says and also some others too - I've cut out snacking, try to sip less, taking vitamins and pre/probiotics etc - there is so much misinformation out there that it is difficult to pindown one's particular issues to give the most effective self-treatment. I was asking questions in an attempt to, firstly, better help myself, and also to 'arm myself' against my dentist (who seems to me to mechanically do what she was told and seems dismissive of other approaches). The "nano" part just refers to the size of the particles, because the smaller the crystals are, the better access they have to the tiny porous holes that form in the teeth. You can see images of it under microscopes and see how the holes are so small that you need really small particles to have any chance at filling them up; this is what your saliva does naturally, the ionic calcium in the saliva are even smaller particles, so if "nano" scares you, your own saliva should really scare you.
Same with the form of silver in that mouthwash, which is colloidal and produced with electricity, also extremely small particles that are much smaller than the ones in the toothpaste. The typical atomic radius is something like ~0.05-0.2 nanometers in size, while the nanohydroxyapatite crystals (which is what your enamel and much of your dentin is made of) are 20-80 nanometers in size.

I get my teeth cleaned every six months. I flossed at least once, sometimes twice a day. I brushed 2 times a day, sometimes more if I felt I needed it. I seldom had much tartar for her to clean off. I started this program about 2 months after a cleaning. By the time I went in for a cleaning the next time, I had the worst tartar buildup on my lower front teeth that I have ever had in my life! I bought the xylitol gum, use the recommended toothbrush or an electric toothbrush at night, and use the system's products. Has anyone noticed that the tartar will get worse like this? I am back to flossing between my lower front teeth in addition to using the products. I honestly feel that the dental cleanings every 6 months, the 1-2 times a day flossing, etc.. is what has caused my gum recession but it is discouraging to have so much tartar buildup in the process of avoiding flossing.

Dr Ellie, I have a question. For 3 months, I rince with Listerine and a mouthwash with flouride (×2) , I use xylitol after every meal/water, and I ve noticed that my gums ( at a few teeth) have detached. It 's a good thing? Shall I continue?
    Please tell me. Thank you.

Love your wisdom and knowledge about oral health! What do you suggest to a community that doesn't brush at all? Any tips!

What age are those in this community, what country do they live in, and what kind of dental problems do they have?
