I'm blown away! I'm 67 years old and have worked on cars since I was around 12-13 and thought "This guy is crazy", but I decided to try it. You sir are a genius. I've been trying to figure this out for well over a year. I've checked the idelers, the tension and condition of the belt and everything was good. The noise would sometimes continue off and on for a few minutes and then go away. Your explanation makes total sense, but I don't think I would have ever come up with that as being the cause. Thank you so much, I wish I could buy you a beer.
Don't feel bad - I've been fixing cars since I was a kid - over 40 years and I' was 59 by the time I figured it out - so you're not alone
@@carquestions, the sequel eventually goes away? I have a Tundra that squeals when I first start it in the morning bu then goes away less than a mile down the road...
@JP-ps1ut I would guess the computer & alternator have time to communicate. My Highland does the same thing but if I'm patient & take the extra 5 second for the seatbelt ring to go away & no squeal. It also does it when I use the AC too fast but it's New Orleans & everyone needs AC.
YOUR THE MAN! JUST REPLACED MY 2010 TOYOTA COROLLA SPORT ALTERNATOR AND I GOT THAT NOISE. WAS ABOUT READY TO TAKE IT BACK OUT AND RETURN IT UNTIL I SAW YOUR VIDEO. IM THINKING ITS BECAUSE THE ALTERNATOR IS A AFTER MARKET ALTERNATOR. START IT SLOW AND NO NOISE AT ALL. EVEN MY WIFE WAS GIVING SHIT ABOUT IT. SHE WAS SAYING WELL YOU PUT THAT ALTERNATOR IN WRONG. 😂😂
@@dago4skinlol…. Leave it up to the wife. He really doesn’t give a solution but to slow down the key turn. I think you should make sure your replacement alternator has the correct amps as the one you’re replacing, if not more amps. I have a 2010 tundra and I could put a 130 or 150 amp alternator in. If he figured out, that the reason why it squeals is amperage not getting enough or getting to the computer faster maybe go with a high amp alternator? 🤷♂️ maybe. We would need a Toyota expert to tell us adding more amps will hurt the truck!
Mechanic charged my grandma $1000 to replace the alternator on her 06’ Yaris. 1 year later it is happening again. I taught her this and now it never screeches! Thanks so much

The belt is loose. Takes no time to adjust it. Needs less than 1 inch of slack. If it has more than that it will squeal. Simple.

This guy knows what he’s talking about. I have a 2010 Toyota Camry and I did a Google search trying to figure out why my belt was squealing. This was the first video I land on and luckily what he said was exactly right for me. It’s great to find someone who knows what they’re doing. Install your belt with ignition in the on position, worked for me!
Change it to a new belt and keep it tight. It fixed the problem I had.
Great video! Mechanical Engineer here - I think you are really close, or at least partly right on the computer causing this. Electrical systems have something called "inrush current" which is a much higher load than the steady state load. Think about it like a piping system being filled with water. Water will rush into the empty pipes faster than it will flow through the full pipes. So with that inrush, the alternator loads up and the belt slips. Now there certainly could be a computer issue on top of that making it worse, combined with old belts and improper tightening. The 1-second pause will allow the battery to fill up the "pipes" with energy and help lessen the load when the car is turned over. It really is a great video!

I have heard the squeaking on and off for 2 months. My wife thought it was the Florida heat. But one time I heard it when it was cool outside.

Excellent! We have a 2005 Highlander and the squeal has been occurring for over a year. Usually first start of the day. Often, after car has been running for a while and is warmed up, the squeal would dissipate or go away. But would always return the next day. Mechanic tried to fix it, but the sound came back after a short time. So glad I watched this video and avoided the cost/hassle of another trip to the repair shop. Thanks very much!!

I am having this issue for 4 months now with my 04 Highlander. I thought the belt was fairly new but I will try this in the a.m.
Came across this video when I was trying to figure out the squeaking issue that my 1990 Toyota Corolla has been doing & it helped a WHOLE LOT!!! It also kept me from sending it back to the shop. I had my harmonic balancer replaced almost 6 months ago, so of course I had to buy new belts. Ever since then I've been having a problem with a small squeaking noise & in the past 2 weeks or so it's gotten worst. I tried belt grease, etc but it would only help for a little while. So, thanks for this very helpful video!! 😊

My car (2007 toyota yaris) has this problem all the time, and I've had the belt tightened and replaced countless times. I wish I knew this prior! I thought I was just rough on the belts!
Also, just for some weird side effect, if I have my AC running at start up, and I turn the AC off after starting my car, the squealing stops that way as well. Thank you for posting this!
I'm glad you mentioned the AC because I pause to start my 07 Highlander like he said & no squeal but if I turn on the AC right away the belt will squeal. Who knew replacing an alternator & belts would CAUSE a problem.

Mr Carquestions is spot ON! I have only 68,000 miles on my 10 year old Yaris, car is perfect but had a lil squeal at start-up. New belt, same thing. Now I stay at "on" for an extra second before turning the key all the way to "start" and NO squeal!. I also think his theory of why this works is exactly true too. Makes perfect sense.

That is the darnedest thing I have ever seen...but it works. I have had the same problem on a 2005 Toyota Sienna for years now. After trying everything possible I finally just gave up. Went out and tried the "slow" key turn this morning and it worked like a charm. I did notice that once you turn the key over to the "On" position that as soon as the gas gauge initiates (shows the level of gas in vehicle) that it is good to go. Apparently there is some type of relay issue with the computer. No need to turn the key slow (at least in my case) just turn the key to "On" and watch for the gas gauge to show the gas level and you are good to start. Only takes the gas gage a second to engage. Great post.

Thanks for this video. It will save a lot of people from spending unnecessary funds and give them peace of mind that it is not a serious issue. One has to wonder why Toyota has not addressed this problem or are they simply "turning a blind eye"?

Holy Crap. My Yaris has done this for years and i have gotten the belt changed numerous times and taken it back to be tightened. I've unfairly judged the mechanic for not getting the belt tight enough. I've woken up my neighborhood and annoyed my kids. Now I can take off without alerting my wife and kids in the morning. thank you!

@@carquestions This! The squeal started after my Dad had the timing belt changed on his 2012 Corolla. I asked his mechanic about it and he didn't know what was causing it. I was about to call the local Toyota dealership to see if they knew what was causing it but decided to Google the issue first. I saw your video and tried your suggestion and it works! I’ve been doing this for a while with my ‘09 Yaris and it’s been doing fine. But since it’s been getting colder & I have had the car for a while, it’s been squealing VERY loudly even with the slow turn! I think it’s time to get my belt tightened or changed 😢 but I’m definitely going to continue turning the key slowly! Glad to know I’m not the only one!

I work at Toyota customer service. You are exactly right, it is a computer hardware problem.
I've mostly had Tundras and Highlanders with this issue, but I wondnt be surprised if other models are having the same issue.
I noticed they are non Japanese assembled models too. We have major issues with quality consistency between factories.
Thanks for the info 88 - but every factory has quality consistency issues no matter the maker and Toyota has less than others - tough to see when you spend a lifetime on one chair and Toyota's idea of a quality issue has a much broader definition than you'll find at FCA for instance

Yup, my Tundra has this problem as well. I noticed it happens sometimes, and sometimes it doesnt. Now I know why lol.
If all Toyotas were like mine, you'd starve. This quirk is the only problem I've had with the car. Best car I ever owned.

My '07 Yaris does this EXACTLY. If I stop at 'run' for a moment, let the dash light up, then proceed to start, NO noise! Thank you soooo much for this. I saw this vid in '16 and have been doing it this way for two years, same belt, no problems!

This is a great video. This week I had the three engine belts changed on my 03 Toyota Highlander, as after 68000 miles, it was about time. No squeal when I picked it up at the shop. On letting it sit in the garage for a day, went out and had the squealing on startup. Went to two stores and it was OK, with no squealing. This morning went out and tested it, and squeal was back. Thought I would have to take it back to the shop, but figured I'd look to my new BFF, the internet, first, as any problem you have, someone else probably has had it too. Just went out and started it, using the slow turn method, and voila, no squeal. This means no trip back to the shop. Thank you so much!

It makes 100% sense! I noticed that once I gunned the engine the squealing stops. I have almost 90,000 miles on my 2007 Yaris. so I really do need to change the drive belt.
If after the belt change it still does it - just turn the key a little slower
Did my belts on my 2002 Yars at 82k and in the service book it say's much earlier than that.

I having the same issue on my 06 v6 3.3L highlander but my noise is very low, not as close than the one in the video but I can just tell it’s squeaking. I will try his technique when I get home today. Mine squeak for about 1s but again very very low sound

@@BriansRCStuff not really, it disappeared this summer and it’s kinda back again now that it’s getting colder! Recently did the belt, water pump and steering pump, the squeaky noise is 70% less noticeable but I can still hear a lil bit!
The noise pretty much disappears after the car is warmed 🤦🏿♂️

Confirmed success on my '09 Yaris.
Still have my 07 Highlander bought new 14 years ago this month with only 92,000 on it. Replaced the alternator & belts 6 months ago & the squealing started on & off about 3 months ago. Tried your solution & it worked. Thanks from New Orleans. Still love my little SUV. Great car.

My Toyota Sienna has what I believed was a squeaky alternator belt. This video sound EXACTLY like it. I popped the hood and took a look and the belt (as well as the alternator) are so clean and new looking, you could eat off of them. Then I felt the tension and there was hardly any slack. It didn't feel too tight, nor did it have that +1/4" slack that you don't want. I also noticed the squeal is much more pronounced when my van has been sitting in a hot parking lot all day, and then I start it up. If I let it run for a minute, it stops like magic. Very strange. I'm still going to get the belt checked, but I think I might try turning the key slowly to see if I can avoid that embarrassing racket until I take it in. Thanks for the tip!

Omg...I purchased my 17yr old son a 2006 Yaris and it does EXACTLY the same thing, it's so embarrassing! Trying to make him a responsible young adult, he has to pay for half of all the car repairs. Now I feel "some kinda way" because we spent so much money getting this car looked at and this is all we had to do??? I can't wait till he gets home from work today so we can try it! This is amazing! We have old Sienna that we fixed up for our kids. So most everything has been changed in the engine to make it safe for them but now this sound which randomly comes on. Will try this method! Thanks again.

Well as a result myself with many years as a mechanic (not tech) i first noticed this in the wifes 2007 yaris belt was good pump good bearing was not making the usual noise and when i tried this after adjusting the belt as i know toyota are touchy on the tension so anyway i tried doing this no more noise but one must not forget to do this as you say in the video i find it has completely stopped this noise thanks and iam working with toyota on this issue to see where it will go i will update when i can thanks again for this excellent video ~Dave

This was exactly my problem on my 03 Toyota Highlander, I just tried it and she purrs like a kitten at startup now.
I'll add that the squealing seemed to be less loud during colder months and louder in the summer, but I don't know why that would be since I've been in the habit of making sure lights, AC/Heat is off before turning it over. Either way, thanks for the video!

BRILLIANT! My son's Yaris had this very problem, and your solution worked perfectly (after several mechanics offered ridiculous solutions, like disconnecting the alternator). Best part: I am the hero (thanks to your video and its simple, quick, and completely inexpensive explanation). I told him I figured out myself, just to get some much needed dad-cred. I'll fess up later, when the cred wears off.

My 2008 was doing this, the belt was relatively new but just needed a little more tension.
Thats normal - you only need this trick when all is tight and new and it still squeals

Thank you. I've had my Yaris for almost 8 years now, and it JUST started doing this. The dealership did suggest changing my belt, and afterwards it kept squealing and then they told me it's just a "characteristic of the engine." So basically it's not a "problem"... IT'S A FEATURE! Also, every try adjusting the serpentine belt on a Yaris? I'm not a car fanatic, but I've never seen a car you had to MANUALLY tension the belt by moving the alternator forward or back and setting the tension with a bolt? However, my 2010 Yaris DOES squeal slightly when pressing the accelerator even with the slow keyturn "fix". Does anyone have any thoughts about that, and does anyone have any hints as to how to adjust the tension belt/alternator properly?
Tighten it as much as possible - use a large screw driver for leverage - if that doesn't work - replace the belt and check the pulley bearings - may need a pulley

Was thinking, if someone can do an experiment with a volt meter hooked up and see if there's a difference in the charge that battery is getting if you start it quick vs. staring it slowly. I don't have a meter, but would be interesting and really prove the theory!

I knew this! The same thing happens to my son's 300ZX and of course, Mr. Knowitall says he is doing nothing wrong. I actually thought I didn't hold the key in the START position as long as he does and that was the difference. I am gong to try thins right now and solve the problem once and for all (I hope)

Mike Morales . Thank God my 1998 Camry doesn't do that my 1995 Camry has a strange ticking sound but still runs great both of this cars are practically indestructible. My 98 only has 115 thousand miles no leaks zero problems runs like new I wouldn't trade it for a 2014 Honda Ford Nissan Chevy my 98 Camry will outlast all this losers.

That's weird I don't even remember complaining about any of my 2 Toyota Camrys making a screeching sound my 1998 Toyota Camry le is practically almost perfect and my 1995 Toyota Camry le it makes a strange ticking sound when I turn the key but it starts immediately I think the ticking sound could be one of the relays but the dam car is practically indestructible it always get me to when I want to go I'm going to retired the car in a couple of years the body is just to beat up besides my 1998 Toyota Camry le with only 116 thousand miles no leaks zero problems runs like new and looks brand new should last me 20 years I'm getting a 1999 Toyota Corolla as my back up car gas is getting too expensive.
Worked on my 04 Highlander 138,000 miles. Was worried I was going to need new pulleys or belt. Thank you!

Ok im checking back in here. Tried this myself in my 07 yaris and yes this man is right and the results are repeatable easily. I hated how tight id make the belt it always felt wrong
Install your belt with the ignition in the on position, worked for me!
i never turn on my car by immediately skipping the ignition. my dad always taught me that one should always turn the key slowly. so when i switch on, i keep the ignition on for a few seconds, i used that time to bring my windows down and then i start.

Brilliant!! I have a Toyota Sienna and was dealing with a noisy alternator belt when starting. I had changed it not long ago and figured it was just not tight enough (which was true). But I tested 'carquestions' theory about the computer sensing the electrical load and it was the same situation as with his car. If I turned on the ignition for a couple seconds before actually advancing it to the starter position... no belt squeal. If I turned the key from off quickly to the starter position... belt squeal. It would appear that, indeed, the computer needs a second or two, after the ignition switch is turned on, to sense what electrical accessories are already in an 'on' state; i.e., it senses the load and adjusts the alternator accordingly. Whereas, bypassing that extra couple of seconds means the computer will default to a "full load" expectation and that in turn means that the alternator's structure is, in that moment, more resistant to pulley turn, thus the squeal on the belt until the pulley spin catches up to belt speed.

had to figure this one out for myself. but you're completely right! when i start it slow, it never squeals. But when my pops turns it on to move out the driveway, it's loud enough to wake the entire block. Great video

Recently replaced my belt and tightened it to the right amount of tension but still got this. Fast ignition causes the squeal and slow doesnt. Thanks!

Could be a bad bearing - if the belt is new and tight turning slowly should do it

Thank you for saving me money, my 2012 Carolla has the exact same issue. I noticed this noise after I changed the timing belt. I was asked to pay another $400 to replace water pump for the squealing noise to go away. When I turn it on slowly I don't hear any noise now. However I still don't know why a new belt showed up this issue while it did not have such noise for the older belt.
Answer - they removed alternator belt when they changed the timing belt and it might have slightly different properties
I had this on my 2004 Lexus es330 after I installed a new alternator and belt. I had already tightened it twice but this did the trick. Thanks so much

I've had this issue for over a year on my 2015 5door hatchback. Just tested turning it over slowly and it's an improvement. 'll work on seeing about getting it in to see about a belt tightening. Thanks for the insight.

Great video! Thank you. I changed the belt on my '06 Sienna and this started happening on every start. Belts are tightened just right. When I leave it for 2-3 seconds before starting, it won't squeal.
Freakin Brilliant! My Yaris was doing the exact same thing - belts were fine - doing the exact same thing. As long as I take a few extra seconds to start the car slowly no squeal. If I just jump in and quick turn the key I get a loud squeal for a few seconds. Exact thing you said. TY so much!

Changed the belt and the tensioner, still did it. Saw this video and it worked! Which means there still is a problem... checked the battery and alternator... found it was a bad alternator, changed it. Squeak is gone!! Always try to find the issue no matter what
