- On this date in 1980, AU PAIRS released their second single, IT’S OBVIOUS, (December 6th, 1980)
AU PAIRS delivered unsafe dance music. Their songs had an earthy, yet simultaneously a mysterious, shaking quality. They had an extraordinary subversive style, a unique consistency, intoxicating hardness, valuable and turbulent lyrics. And they always chose dignity over popularity.
Their songs were gems; powered by the depth of critical work they put into them. Playing bitter, physical, shrill, vigorous postpunk rock, their inspiration came from all sorts of traditions and revolutions, intentions political and poetical, romantic and realistic - to shatter hypocrisy and mediocrity.
Formed in Birmingham in 1979 during the ‘second wave’ of punk, AU PAIRS were a pulsating marriage of brittle, dissonant, guitar-based rock and political consciousness.
The music was jagged but danceable and atop was Lesley Woods’ searing, confrontational lyrics that celebrated sexuality from a woman's perspective. Political message was at the forefront of their music: they regularly took swipes at the conservative political climate sweeping England after Margaret Thatcher's election as Prime Minister.
Au Pairs broke-up in 1983 just before they were about to go into the studio to record an album with producer Steve Lillywhite. A great shame, as the band had so much more to give.
It's Obvious, with its use of repetition and voices in counterpoint and determinedly anti-sexist subject matter, was a U.K. Top Forty hit, and a major hit in America.

What a band. They deserve a lot more exposure, even though they have pretty much broke up for good.
I've never heard of them. I'm an 80's flower. Amazing I can still find stuff and this from someone who wakes up and falls asleep to music. I love how they move on stage. They're a bit B52's on blotter acid.....yum.
A great band saw them loads of times when I was a teenager
Great drums, great interplay between guitars & solid bass
BEYOND FUNKY!! ... Great song, even better performance...Almost seems like a dis to call this rock'n'roll -- but it sho' ROCKS (PiL, Bush Tetras, post-punk/No-wave stew: mix'n'roil.)
I saw them in Brixton in 1982. Awsome and delightfully night.
One of my favourite songs of all time. This and “Diet” ( double A side)! Then bought the album playing with a different sex .. defining time in my mid-late teens ❤️❤️❤️
.. superb post thank you 😊
Saw then many times in Birmingham-they never disappointed.
Love love love

Paul Hodge, ThankYou for posting, Brilliant song & band!
Saw them in 1980. Redcar. So GOOD :)
He's my guitar teacher now
Lol serious? Does he still do the 80s dance like that when plays?😁 pretty cool they could hang with gang of 4 any day.
Every time I return to this i realise the sheer musicality above the honest political lyrics
Saw them in Birmingham London New York etc!!! Fcking awesome.
Does anyone remember Fast Relief??
This is the only footage I found with this song being played live, thank you for posting
My pleasure Lucas :)
They're not playing this song, though. In fact, the footage is from Pinkpop in 1982 (also on CZcams), and they're performing "Set Up," not "It's Obvious."

Watched these in Digbeth one night way back when, the gig was full of right-wing skin bonces. Loads of fun. The band were great though. Thanks for posting.
