Split 6 is what we ran in high school in 80s vs mostly option offenses. I played 6 technique DE. Designed to give LBs the tackles. I was responsible for keeping the tightend off the inside LB. I was responsible for QB on the option and outside contain of QB on pass.
I played Safety Position in the years 80's and 90's in Mexico City and These players are my favorite Safeties of all time: Ed Reed, Sean Taylor, Brian Dawkins, John Lynch, Charlie Waters, Cliff Harris, Mel Renfro, Randy Hughes, Bill Bates, James Washington, Thomas Everett, Darren Woodson, Brock Marion, George Teague, Roy Williams, Ken Hamlin, Gerald Sensabaugh, Barry Church, JJ Wilcox, Ricardo Ponce, Gary Fencik, Ronnie Lott, Troy Polamalu, Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, Darren Sharper, Willie Wood, Rodney Harrison, Steve Atwater, Leroy Butler, Rod Woodson, Joey Browner, Ken Houston, Robert Griffith, Tim McDonald, Eugene Robinson, Kenny Easley, Eric Berry, David Fulcher, Bob Sanders among others Safeties either Strong Safety or Free Safety which is my Favorite Position in NFL
It really hinges on the nose tackle to be a strong guy and clog the middle. It pits athleticism and speed against the oline as oppose to going more head up like the 4-3. Alot of people think you can just double the DT and Ends.. but that will leave the LB's to shoot the gap against the run
@TheoRoosy no, they are not. the WS should be lined up on the weak side (thus WS) which means the side where no TE is. the SSLB lines up on the TE side, thus making him the strong side backer...
@33arrow Besides that, this defense is weak as fuck vs the counter. He acts like it is powerful, but most counter plays now are using pulling guards. If the guard pulls over he will take out the end. The FB can now directly block the Mike, and the back is through for a huge gain.
a 4-3 defense form my experience vs a 3-4 can be much more effective with lower quality players. like in a true 3-4 you need a very good solid man at that nose gaurd position or that defense goes belly up allready. you can have decent DT in a 4-3 and still get away with it. same goes with line backers. a 4-3 OLB has more coverage responsabilities vs a 3-4 OLB that has pass rush and coverage responsabilities. if you have the right guys a 3-4 is better if you dont run a 4-3
3-4 defense is the most versatile defense. Creates the most pressure and has the best run stopping abilities. Only the best defense in the NFL run the 3-4. Example; 49ers, texans, steelers, ravens etc.

Losing Wilcox and Church, I'm still mad lol. But they were stronger vs the run than pass
Agreed, why is the "will" on the strong side and the free safety dropping down into the box? No wonder UCLA is a subpar football program! lol
Yup my friend. Absolutely right! Ray Lewis wasn't happy when the goose retired so they had to draft H.nagata.

This lecture would be much more effective if he added some game footage of successful defence plays.
Evidently no one here has seen the "46" defense run out of the 4-3
This entire video basically tells you how your players will shift after a run read.
3-4 is not easy to run against. It's very difficult to run but when a team gets it down, watch out!

Am I missing something or am I misreading the diagram? Why is the WSL lining up with the TE? it looks reversed...shouldn't the SSL be on the left?

im running weak side pull guard and d is out numbered
How come?
If the D is flooding the strong side.Wouldnt the offense have 1 on 1 with the corner with virtually no Help from the safety
I'm 5 ft 9 and 194 pounds. Can I play linebacker?

could you please get your terminology correct-the SS comes up for run support, and the S and W LB's should be switched.

The 3-4 is too easy to run against...
