Anime's single most motivating line (Tanaka Ryūnosuke)

- It's very common nowadays for people to use anime for motivation - listening to soundtracks in the gym, watching big scenes before a big moment IRL, or just rewatching THAT moment when we're at a low point. I could name countless motivational anime quotes or scenes, but of all of them, my favourite is undoubtedly "Tanaka's Greatest Moment" - his cross shot against Inarizaki to win the first set.
Tanaka's whole speech about how he's "Nothing but average", and therefore has is something that's always really inspired me. During my absolute lowest moments, his following line is one that's played in my head again and again.
CHAPTERS:
00:00 Intro
01:05 Tanaka Ryūnosuke
01:45 Karasuno vs Inarizaki
04:08 Karasuno set point(s)
05:00 Tanaka is doing well
06:38 Tanaka's greatest moment
10:55 The monster's ball
12:18 "We need your attacks, Tanaka"
13:12 Tanaka's new path
15:33 Outro

" all those who've worked hard didn't succeed, but all those who succeeded have worked hard."
---Hajime No Ippo
in sports, this is the most true thing ever
Hajime no Ippo is goated. manga is a solid 10/10 for me
Can someone please explain what this is trying to say?
@@OrenMystery The person quoted it wrong, the actual quote is “Not all who worked hard succeeded, but those who have succeeded have worked hard.”
@@rizzy1044 That makes a lot more sense now.

@@tubsy. easily? Guess you haven't met the right people
@@yashwanthmokkapati2102 Yes, I used to have a super negative outlook in the world, everyone seemed so stupid, emotional, and weak. But now that I've met this bestfriend of mine who's such a mentally strong human being, I have regained my faith in humanity.
The Indomitable Human Spirit doesn't just exist in fiction and media, you can and will meet some of them one day, just gotta keep going.
@@hish33p32 The entire world is a matter of perspective perhaps..everything around us will influence us, we gotta choose which one we are gonna let influence us. Having that control over your mind is what they call "the indomitable spirit".
I find comfort in Tanaka's character. I always cry when I read and watch his arc. A constant player on the court, he never once left the team, he's always willing to support just about anybody in the team. A GREAT SENPAI INDEED.
i want you
the scariest people are not the geniuses who have the praise to keep going, its the average joes that despite everything still chase their dreams and somehow keep up to the genius.
Ngolo Kante, my GOAT
There was an interview years ago with some of the biggest Japanese volleyball players, and when the players were asked who their favorite player from Haikyuu was, Yuji Nishida said Tanaka :)
Haikyuu is the anime I always seem to come back to when I want to feel inspired.
Tanaka and Daichi do that for me.
I just never seem to stop watching it tbh haha
I love Daichi. Amazing captain, leader, motivator and friend.
Gurren Lagann might make you go nuts then
what are you doing here lol i love ur videos chefpk
Hey paul great to see you here ^^ haikyuu is truly a series where you get all pumped up
I don't get why people perpetrate this notion that Tanaka is average. HE THINKS he's average, but by all means, to someone who plays volleyball, he is at least above average.
The story doesn't highlight his skills as much, maybe because it's not flashy, or maybe as a setup to his characterization in the Inarizaki match. He actually has good reflexes and game sense to the point where he's a consistent first touch or second touch to out-of-system balls. He's an incredible side wiper and line spiker, which were his main weapons before adding a sick cutter to his arsenal. He's at least showed decent skill with all the relevant volleyball skills except for underhand setting. He's also the only Karasuno regular whose never missed a single rally since the start of the story.
This really circles back to the insult that he's just a budget Bokuto. The fact that Omimi even thought to compare him to a specific top 5 ace means Tanaka himself is on his way to becoming like him. In my perspective, that's a big compliment considering Bokuto is a third year with lots of experience going up against high class teams (Tokyo is stacked af and Fukurodani is a powerhouse team in a stacked region) while Tanaka is a second year with only a few months worth of experience with high level volleyball and already wrecking top level ones in a team where he is by no means a slouch.
Same!
People and even Tanaka himself often call him average, but that is out of perspective!
He might not be on the same level as Bokuto or others, but he always keeps up, he´s always there when he´s needed.
He´s a reliable pillar of the Karasuno team.
People claim he´s average at best. Try to be average in an ocean of geniuses, gifted and freaks. XD
Right! Tanaka isn't a budget bokuto, he's a bokuto with 1% of the resources given to him!
This is the biggest Problem with haikyuu. Literally no one is average in this anime, but they claim otherwise.
I think in this context, "average" might be better thought of as "not special" or "well-rounded."
He's not bad at anything, but he's not the best at anything. He doesn't have any specific peak that stands out. His "stats" are average across the board. You undoubtedly want at least one player like that on your team, someone you can depend on to always do what they need to do wherever they are on the court, but there's always someone on the team who'd have been able to do that thing better than him if they'd been in the same position because they're the best at that specific thing.
In the context of high-level players in the league-where everyone is already, by default, "above average" compared to the entirety of human beings who play volleyball, sure-he's average. He'd fill a role on any team at nationals and he'd do it well enough to merit being on the court, but he'd never excel the way star players do. He's a 4-star player in a field full of 4-star players, but it's the 5-star names that stick out.
The way I comprehend the thought of him being called as an average is the fact that they play in a high-level environment. There's also the fact that Karasuno is an up-and-coming team, is filled with specialists or should I say standouts (like Kageyama who is a super setter, Nishinoya, a super libero, etc.) who overshadows an all-rounder Tanaka. Plus, their enemies are arguably top 3 best high school team.
Yes, there's no way Tanaka is actually average in terms of skills (he is a high-spec player), but him being called an average is just like saying he is a normal person mixed in a crowd of celebrities.
This is my opinion only.
“Chance favors the prepared mind.” This one is what I always remember and hopefully pass on to my child(ren).
“Set your heart ablaze”
That's a good one too
That’s the one that came to my mind too.
Too bad a "heart" does not exist
@@tubsy. ?
@@water7962 When people say "Heart" they usually mean something like "spiritual part of the person where our emotions and desires dwell".
Well I'm saying that that doesn't exist. And that all of our behaviors are chemical reactions in our brains that are beyond "our" control.
Not nearly as interesting or inspiring. 🤷♂️
"Opportunities present themselves to those who have prepared." That line changed my life
Nothing will ever beat Gurren Lagann, "Don't believe in yourself. Believe in me! Believe in me, who believes in you!"
that's for one person cheering another.. Tanaka's line is more of what one person can say to himself when they've got no one who's gonna cheer for them.. pls dont ever try saying that shit again.. Gurren Lagann aint even that good tbh..
this is more like kageyama's point of view don't you think?
@@poloy7051 crazy take to say Gurren lagann isn't good when it clears haikyuu. If you watched Gurren lagann you would know that line evolved into "Believe in you who believes in yourself" which is literally what the whole show is about.
@@kog2749 don't even bother, as soon as he said "gurren lagann is not even that good" you know you are talking to someone with a clear intellectual deficit

Another thing I loved about this scene is how it reminded me of my favorite line from Coach Ukai during the Shiratorizawa game. “Don’t you dare look down. Volleyball is a sport where you’re always looking up.” I loved this video and definitely the reminder I needed right now!!
Ahhh I meant to put that in the outro but forgot 😭
That line is great. As a coach I have used that and when used in the right moment it actually does wonders
Rip Voice actor of Coach Ukai, last voice line
Remember guys, being average doesn't mean being behind at anything. Being average only means that you are being consistent. 😁
god damn thats a good line
And improving, if you are the best in the room then you should ask yourself the question whether u are in the right room. The fact that he is playing against all these talented players means he's on the right path
being average means u have the tools to be the best. The worlds alot more complex then just strength beats all.
That THAT is what Ive always wanted. Even before I watched Haikyuu. I realized that the ability to always be optimistic is the best thing I can ever ask for. And seeing Tanaka just be that exact character. HES ALWAYS OPTIMISTIC. ALWAYS ENJOYING. ALWAYS CHEERFUL. It feels like he has had more of a life then Ive ever had. Theres a quote I like which helps me realize the need for optimisim even more. Every man dies. But not every man lives
"Every man dies. But not every man lives" is a damn good line.
@@franklynnyein127 I know right! Dude it just makes you enjoy life so much more!!
it maybe a coincident or just nothing related at all but after the end of the second day we found out that Bokuto is really doing well on his game after watching Karasuno plays. Be know Bokuto really reacted to Tanaka plays and the mental strength he have. I like to think that Tanaka maybe learn cross shot technique from watching Bokuto but Bokuto learn the fun of playing with strong mental strength from watching Tanaka.
The voice acting of both Kageyama and Tanaka in that second scene is JAW dropping too AGH may 31st can’t come soon enough!!
The line ,,Nah I'd win'' , gave me actual motivation to study for my finals and win.
Holy shit, ace video bro
Edit: long story short, Tanaka so humble he views himself as painfully average, but makes perseverance look easy with how persistent his efforts and attitude are
This is one of the best videos I've seen on CZcams in a LONG time. I clicked because of the one line bait and I love Haikyuu, wavered a bit when I saw that it was a 17 minute video, and then 17 minutes later I was sad it passed by so quickly. A perfect summary of Tanaka's journey to this moment, the actual audio from his big moment so that fresh off of hearing his story we get to experience the moment again, and then a (admittedly somewhat sappy but still nice) message to send us off with. Just truly well done.
Thank you!
I've felt like Tanaka. this year in high school I joined the wind ensemble, an advanced music group, and way out of my league. I remember coming away from rehearsals filled with shame and the idea that I shouldn't be there, honestly sometimes with tears in my eyes too. After a lot of practice I finally feel I have caught up to my peers and have a sense of belonging. The best advice I can give to anyone who feels average is don't get too much in your head and also just enjoy the moment because one day you will be better.
I really needed this bro. I was questioning my capabilities and how Nothing I did ever seemed to yield any result. I was about to give up on what my ambition has been for years in the face of this failure that has been towering over me. This has given me the courage to keep going. Thank you so much

You can't even get how comforting your your channel is for me. I'm such a big fan of haikyuu, but it seems many people I know don't get why and I'm probably not that good at explaining myself. But then I think of your videos and I know exactly why and how to explain it. You really sum it up beautifully. So thank you 🙏🏻
No worries!
You know there’s this one moment from Daichi that I kinda remember when I was reading the manga.
I don’t remember what chapter and I don’t even remember an exact quote.
But it was something along the lines of him highlighting the fact that he wasn’t the best player, but he was their captain, and his role was to be the foundation for his team. Which I believe lead into him making a badass receive or spike. I wish I could find that chapter, but it was so badass
Probably in the third set vs inarizaki? Or in the Johzenji match
I think one instance was when kageyama and hinata were getting worked up and miss their quick but Daichi covers for them, there he says something about him not being as flashy and talented as Hinata and Kageyama but as a captain, he'll support them from behind
And one instance when Shinsuke doesn't quite get why Daichi was running up for the synchronized attack rather than staying to pick up blocked balls, then Daichi smashes the ball into the court proving Kita wrong, that he's here to attack as well
Daichi is so cool man, it's so amazing how they put a lot of effort into writing every character
@@shine6290 I think that first one was 100% it
It's very interesting how hard we can be on ourselves. Sometimes our expectations blind us from the achievements we have made and it feels like we're failing. The best way to combat that is to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Noting the things we are excelling at is a great motivator to persevere in the main goal we are struggling with.
Finally glad to realize that someone else is also feeling same about that situation of tanaka and how amazingly inspiring that scene is.....hatsoff to the creator of that eposode man seriously favourite and most inspiring moment in entire anime

There is *ALWAYS* something you can do at any specific point. Finding your best move is always going to be impressive.
Learning how to emotionally regulate is a skill and what Tanaka is doing is important, he's able to pick himself up and he's self aware. While he may not be the most athletically gifted person emotional regulation is important especially during a high pressure moment. He displayed that he has IQ and EQ, and that's ultimately how he was able to remain effective and do his job well, being preset and calm.
The emotions were so crazy for that season.
Thank you so much for this video. I was in quite a bad place when I saw it and it really helped me

The Tanaka episode is my favourite from the entire show.
If I needed to pick a line from every anime/manga I ever watched/read, I don't think I can narrow it down.
But if I can do with a line from specificaly Haykyuu, it will always be "Talent is something you make bloom, instinct is something you polish."

WELL DONE. I LOVE THESE STROIES
I honestly forgot where I got this from. I took it to heart, and years later this is, when it comes to motivation and aiming for my goals, my most ground truth. Seeing this made me realize how much of an impact this whacky animation series about dudes playing volleyball has had on me
Ah, how poetic, your first ever video was about this Tanaka scene, and now this video's view rate is signaling that it will also be the most viewed, I love when things like this go full circle.

Damn bro you always make me feel deep connections to characters. I never see such face to story if a watch the anime. GOLDEN CONTENT. THANK YOU FOR ANOTHER VIDEO.💙💙
I needed to hear this. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
I really needed this at this moment. Here I am really feeling down the last couple of months as I ponder is what I am doing all worth it? Am I making a difference? Am I even doing anything.
I am feeling so mediocre, no even have serious self doubt of my worth as I don't think I am effective. I don't see myself contributing but rather dragging down the people around me and it hurts.
Watching this made me remember how I resonated with Tanaka here. How I am also a Mr. Average surrounded by monsters who were doing far better. I feel like I'm in the bottom of that mountain that Tanaka is looking at and have no will to take that step paralyzed of the notion that I am a failure at this point.
So thank you for this lesson.
Glad I could help!
I really needed that. I have always been that one player on the team that’s either average or doesn’t even start the game. Recently I have been considering giving up one of my two sports cause I felt like it was pointless to continue with it, however this video has changed my mind.Thank you.
Tanaka understands the most important step a man can take
This one video got me out of the rut I was in this soccer season. Ty so much, I was looking at all the bad I have been doing instead of the positive I have accomplished. I have a game tomorrow and I’m going to crush it.
I was so excited when you continued into Kageyama telling Tanaka he's not holding off on the left attacks. It's one of my favorite moments for them, both in the encouragement (if not intended as such) given from kageyama, but also the moment it leads to. When Kageyama makes that set, in a big way he is showing Tanaka that Tanaka is performing on an elite level. Why? Because he - the best setter they have - is trusting Tanaka with the full range of his weapons, even at the cost of other advantages Kageyama could have gleaned out of the play. This was the very argument Hinata/Kageyama had earlier in the series when Hinata wanted to be more than the bullet Kageyama fired.
Tanaka may not be able to live in that world of giants, but on that day in that match he was definitely on that level. And that sequence with kageyama treating him like a full partner in the play cements it so well - while simultaneously showing Kageyama's own growth as the 'spoiled prince' of the court.
I'm below average on everything. Let this be a statement. A prediction. Let my words be prophecy. I will be a powerlifting world champion someday. I'll come back to this comment when that day comes. BELIEVE!!!
I. Believe. ❤.
We will be waiting for your return
"I stand on the battlefield to protect what's important to me. And if anyone's to stand in my way, I don't care if it's one of my kind, my brother or anyone else... I'll crush them all! Then and now, what I protect has never changed."
This line from Gintama made me want to find what i want to protect, and led me to my current life path. As simple as the line is, it gave me that final push that was detrimental in where I'm at now.
This is awesome, thank you for reminding me to keep on going :)
The line that I personally resonated more with was the moment he hits the cross shot: 出来る まで やれば、出来る!
After my 2nd failed attempt of the JLPT N3 test, I started to lose motivation and couldn't think of a way of how I would be able to succeed on a possible third attempt..

My one line is “Eat shit losers” by Kaiser from Blue Lock. That level of overwhelming advantage and confidence is just insane as he launches the ball into one of the most beautiful goal shots ever while upside down in mid air
tanakas line where he says that everyone on this side of the court is your friend. that right there is what locked me into the anime and got me into volleyball. I have always been afraid of contacting other players but hearing tanaka saying everyone on your side is here for you really pushed me past
This vid had me tearing up
One of the hardest battles anyone will ever fight in a competitive setting is when you think you have hit the ceiling of your abilities. Tanaka is not average, he is excellent, and a force of spirit for Karasuno; but Tanaka feels that he is at the edge of the mountain, at a point where the jump is too big and if he falls he will never rise again. Luckily he has people like Kageyama who show him even in the darkest of times that he can do more. That he believes in him. It is a powerful moment to get past that mental block of believing you will always be average and it's also the first step to becoming a monster invited to the ball. This might not be the last time Tanaka feels average but every time he fights back and continues to climb that mountain, step by step, he is becoming the prodigy he wants to be.
Great dive🙏🏾🖤

The anime line I probably use most often to encourage others is "Do your best!". A very simple line, but the way Ippo used it during Takamura's match against Bison in the manga made me understand that it is amazing. Telling someone just "Do your best!" means you genuinely believe in their ability and that it will be enough to surpass the challenge ahead. It means that you truly have faith.
