Notice the difference in parenting styles between Rhaenyra & Alicent. When Jace returned from the North, Rhaenyra could see how much pain he was in. So she holds & comforts him, as they cried together over Luke's death.
Meanwhile Alicent sees Aegon mourning his son's death & she just walks away, unable or unwilling to comfort him. Instead, she goes right back to sinning with Cristin, like she did the night her grandson was killed in his own bed. Rhaenyra's sons were raised to be caring & decent while Alicent's first two sons turned out to be ruthless & self-serving, much like their uncle Daemon. Alicent also manipulates Halaena to be used as a pawn, just as Otto used her when she ws young. All she seems to care about in this episode is covering her own ass about screwing Cristin every chance she gets. She cares only about her own guilty pleasures "The Gods punish ME!" yet she keeps going back to get another round of sexy time... While I don't care for Otto much, Alicent is simply abhorrent as is Cristin Cole.

@@nancyberry1039 I think you're severely misunderstanding Alicent and her role as a mother. The nature in which Alicent vs Rhaenyra's children were conceived is very important to understand their roles as mothers. Rhaenyra's children were born out of love (Harwin), Alicent was a child bride and the 4 of her children were born out of marital rape from an older man she never wanted to marry.
Her family (alicent, otto, alicents children) all don't know how to communicate emotionally. We see it with Aegon and Helaena, then we see it with Alicent and Otto, then again with Alicent and Aegon, and Aemond only being vulnerable with this woman who kind of looks like his mother, being cradled.
Alicent really isn't the evil witch you guys want her to be. She loves her children but she cannot stomach them sometimes and I get it. Shes incredibly emotionally repressed and was alone for a long time.

he “Dance of the dragon” event that the show is depicting, isnt a typical story like game of thrones. Its a retelling of the events by different people within the “game of thrones” verse. So when people say “it happened this way in the books” technically no one knows how it really happened because the story is told multiple different ways by biased people on both sides of the war.

The events in the show were worse than in the book with blood and cheese. Both scenarios ended with the heir being beheaded but in the books it was a swift cut and in the show it seemed to be sawed off with a dull blade. In the book there may have been a mention of grape but none took place and in the book Alicent was checking on her family like a good grandmother and in the show she was getting piped down by Criston who allowed the whole thing to happen by not being on watch.

Mysaria (White Worm) must’ve made it back to warn Erryck that she saw his twin arrive. He had a hunch something was up, but burst through the door yelling “BROTHERRR!” You wouldn’t rush into the Queen’s room with your sword ready on a just hunch like that, so Mysaria must have told him or alerted someone. I hope the next episode will clarify.

I agree, but I think that's implied quite adequately. I'm not sure why people thought Mysaria herself was going to burst into the room. She wouldn't have been able to fight off any of the king's guard, let alone a swordsman like Ser Arryk. I think it's clear she told the guard she was with and he sent word up to the castle. Ser Erryk already had a funny feeling when he walked by his brother hiding (twin stuff), so I'm sure he didn't hesitate when he got the word.

I feel like this episode, specifically, shows Alicent's failures as a mother. 1. Faced with her daughter's grief, she can't help but center it around her own shortcomings, asking Helaena about what she saw instead of empathizing with her loss. Aemond seeks the maternal company of an older woman, implying that he is starved of motherly love. And seeing her son, the king, weep, the one time when she could have probably guided him as she said she wanted to do, she freaks and instead stumbles back into her own self-destructive habits.
Of course she loves her children, but she is a bad mother. And in this regard I cannot really see Otto in a good light in spite of him being presented as the brains behind the throne - Alicent learned her parenting skills (or lack thereof) from him, after all.

Alicent lost her own mother at a very young age no? Otto provided for Alicent everything except emotional support. So it is not a surprise she doesn't know how to give emotional support to her children. On top of that, Viserys also didn't give that support to them as well, giving the little he could only to their older sister. Why wont they be fucked up?

Very true and I liked how they contrast that with showing Raynera with her young children while they are playing with toys and as well in the first episode with Jace while they mourn Luke and in the first season as well her showing love and compassion to the boys, Alicent never showed her children love, it was almost resentment.

This ep def showcases Alicent's parental failings, but it also absolutely shows how those failings are derived from the ways she was failed by her father. The generational cycle of it all. The scene of Alicent leaving Aegon without comforting him directly follows the (second) scene of the episode where she reaches out to Otto for vulnerability/comfort and is denied. Really digging that focus.

Otto stepped on Aegon's toes way too many times, and he did so in front of others which made Aegon feel emasculated, insecure , powerless and incompetent. One thing about Aegon is that although he’s obviously currently acting irrationally out of grief he’s not completely and utterly stupid. He wants a hand ready for war and willing to help him get revenge while also being loyal to him and doing as he asks. Otto although obviously loyal to him is also against war at the amount and isn’t willing to do as Aegon asks as is clear in the way that Larys pointed out to Aegon last episode that Otto wants to control Aegon’s rule the way he did Viserys’s. Aegon wants a hand who will follow his wants instead of pushing for their own. Criston in Aegon’s eyes is an extremely talented sword(right behind or with Aemond) who can do a good job leading his armies into battle while also staying loyal to Aegon throughout, since Aegon has known Criston since he was a child as a guard loyal to the greens and willing to spill blood to prove it. Criston was also the only person in this episode besides Aegon who actually did anything to attempt spilling blood for what happened and Aegon clearly likes that.

And we see Aegon in his breakdown twisting his fathers ring. Of course he is broken up about Jaeharys, but in that moment I think what Otto said and implied (he was right about you, is that what you think) was playing in his head and the rejection and insecurity came flooding back. He had started to delude himself that his father chose him after all, that being king was a way for him to feel loved finally. But now his kingship just means the destruction of his family and his grandpa trying to use him and his son as tools.

I think you’re spot on. Aegon himself was not of the belief that his father loved him enough, but he so badly wanted to believe it that he kept telling himself he meant something to Viserys. In that moment, Aegon hears his lifelong insecurities prattled back at him, by his grandfather who subjected him to this seat in the first place, endangering him and marking his family as a target.
Aegon is not a good person, but I genuinely could not help but feel terrible for him in that moment. He was putting on a brave face until he was alone to weep and break down. It’s just so sad how broken this family is, especially on Alicent’s side.

@qwanellpullins9883 Exactly this. Alicent never truly knew how to be a mother to her children (not her necessarily her fault having grown up without one, but still). Even on the 3rd episode of the 1st season where baby Aegon is crying in the carriage on the way to the hunt, she hands him off to her handmaiden once he gets fussy. Cue to the 9th episode again in the carriage on the way to Aegon's crowning (As I type this i realize the brilliance in the writing for this parallel!) and Aegon asks Alicent if she loves him and all she does is scowl roll her eyes and call him an imbecile. They did a great job last season showing the difference in how Alicent and Rhaenyra are mothers to their children and effects of it. I love that it's showing now in this season even with Aegon now not knowing how to be affectionate and/or comfort Halaena on the stairs. Even Aemond calling Alicent by her name and not as his mother. Viserys is also to blame for not really engaging with his children with Alicent in any meaningful way as well, because of his guilt for Aemma and Rhaenyra. Whew the dysfunction jumped out!

What happened to Sir Erryk and Sir Arryk is was symbolises the tragedy of "The Dance of the Dragons" in House of the Dragon, the fact that brother fights brother, family fights family.
Otto Hightower gives such good Kris Jenner vibes in this episode and finds out later on that 'he's surrounded by idiots' when confronting Aegon for what happened with the Ratcatchers.
Never thought I would hate to my bones another character NEARLY as mush as Joffrey as I do to Crisby Cole. And also Cole has NO business at all being Lord Commander of the Knight's Watch, or Hand of the King. He can't be trusted, he's a liar, a smug. Remember back in Season 1, he was head over heals when he saw the White Hart and was proud for Rhaenyra, but when she rejected him, he turns on her, to Alicent. That tells you everything about him. It's also been said in the books that history does not remember him fondly because of his role in the Dance.
And also Alicent not comforting Aegon also shows that she can't bring herself to because she hardly had that her whole life, coming to court as a young girl, a young bride to the older Viserys, used as a pawn by her father in his game, and that is shown how she interacts with her children, Aegon, Aemond, Helaena and Daeron. (Daeron is only mentioned in this episode living in Oldtown).
(PS, Oak, it's understandable why you were heated after last episode, Blood and Cheese, was an event that the book readers were dreading BADLY.
Just remember Badd Medicine, House of the Dragon is based on the book "Fire and Blood", which is written as sources from accounts of the events, so the storyline is not completely accurate.

WARNING BOOK STUFF: So the book this is based on is written from the point of view of a Maester writing history based on accounts from different sources that often conflict. So the book story itself in terms of the details and motivations is really an unreliable source of the full truth. So all the private conversations and revealing of individual motivations and hidden actions is some of the cool stuff the show can fill in that is not in the books. As far as what the show portrays accurate to the books the only thing I can recall is the hanging of all the rat catchers, Otto's dismissal and Cole given Hand of the King and the great fight between the twin brothers which has very different accounts from 2 sources that the show manages to draw some truth from each. The funeral procession is not mentioned. As far as the Blood & Cheese incident nothing happened to Halaena other that of course her son being murdered but in the books the extra horror is they have another son that is not in the show and Alicent is gagged and present in the room. B&C force Halaena to choose which son should be murdered or else they all get killed. Halaena reluctantly chooses the younger son Maegor and Cheese whispers in his ear "you hear that, your Mom wants you dead" and they kill the elder son Jahaerys. Halaena has visions of the future but is not anything like a long view schemer a la Otto, she is portrayed as on the spectrum in the show. Great reaction guys, there are so many huge events to come I cannot wait to see!

He had mourned his son already, but now he knows everything he stands on was built off a lie and his father truly did want Rhaenyra to rule. I think part of him knows he isn’t a good king as much as he wants to be. Alicent couldn’t comfort him because she knows his father always preferred Rhaenyra. The ring he was playing with in that scene was his father’s, showing he’s thinking about him.

When you watch the show always remember that the greatest asset of the Greens is Vhagar, the greatest asset of the Blacks is Daemon. The show likes to parallel equal things in the same episode. Episode 7 Driftmark" of last season did just that with Daemon and Vhagar.
Regarding the question if Daemon told Blood & Cheese to kill the boy: We see Blood confessing everything to Larys. Later Crispin says to Arryk before he commands him to kill Rhaenyra that the assassins were sent to kill Aemmond NOT Jaecaerys. Daemon didn´t lie to Rhaenyra.

This episode did a really good job of showing how the royal families squables have a ripple effect on their people. We saw the woman telling Aemond that they tend to be the ones who suffer. We see all the ratcatchers being killed, the innocent families mourning them, a woman taken hostage for information and having to barter her freedom and the twins killing one another.

Someone should have told the show's creators that the protagonist doesn't have to be a holy hero, but they didn't. And they also forgot to tell them that a brutal clash of rich, dense images is ALWAYS preferable to a refined story about victims of circumstances. Even if in the first case all the characters are devils, scoundrels and ambiguous people who took a wrong turn. The Game of thrones has already trodden this road. Tywin, Jaime, Tyrion, Littlefinger, Stannis (our king), Dany, Theon, Euron - all are very far from the ideal personality, to put it mildly. And yet we either love them or love to hate them. But they are what make this story awesome. “House of the Dragons” needed the firm hand of a decisive showrunner who does not bend to today’s fragile audience. Alas

Rhaenyra should have given better direction or any direction at all. If they would work together she would already have her throne back. They are at war, at this point who cares whose fault it is... Go win the war or stfu and bend the knee.

daemon feels slighted and anger for viserys passing him over as heir. that conversation/argument revealed the truth between them. however, daemon does love his family (in his own ways) and really hates the hightowers, the greens, more than anything. he always has. despite the issues happening b/t daemon and rhaenyra, i do believe daemon is loyal to his family (the blacks) and will protect them, esp having several kids.

  • @hordeofswords

Alicent is referring to Helaena. The character of Helaena is written and portrayed as autistic coded. In addition to this Helaena like Viserys and several of her ancestors before her was a Dreamer. In essence she's psychic getting visions and premonitions of the future. Although those visions/premonissions are not always clear. In the first episode she said she was scared of rats. This was a premonition of the death of her son. As a result of both of these she is more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety, as evidenced in her panic attack during the funeral processsion. Due to a fundamental lack of understanding of either of these, she is seen as weak and fragile. Most likely everyone thinks she's crazy. So Alicent is worried about how this trauma is going to impact Helaena's mental state, given all that I have already stated. What makes Helaena a truly tragic character is that she has tried time and time again to warn the people around her of the things to come but no one takes her Dreamer abilities seriously.

  • @littlebabyclover
    @littlebabyclover Před měsícem +2

I don't think Helaena was looking at the 'small folk' and realising their sympathy.. I think she was having a vision.. the way she was looking at the confetti, it kinda looked like ash. If she was, perhaps her vision has something to do with people grieving and ash, which could make sense if there's going to be a war with dragons. Just my guess though.

A lot is different here in regards to the book. There's no funeral procession, and Daemon is already at Harrenhall when Blood and Cheese happens. They do hang all the rat catchers though, and it's said in the books that Ser Otto is the one who commissioned the cats, and there was never another rat catcher ever, the post was eliminated because of this act.

Alicent not comforting her son has several layers it seems. But, a strong one, I think, is that she has a father who lacks the ability/desire to provide emotional support, and that poor parenting trait has simply passed down to her as well.

  • @daniellylima5568

27:19 I liked the scene with the Twins, there were people who didn't like it because they didn't feel as much about the death of their brothers, but if people aren't sad about that scene, it's because we didn't have that much scene between the two of them because the public cares about the characters for reasons that not everyone They were so emotional in this scene, but that's why the writers are educated, that's why I say it's good, it shows all the characters and shows a lot on the screen because the audience cares about the characters, but for me, I really liked the scene.
“We were born together, you separated us. But I still love you brother.”
They were born together, were separated by choosing opposite sides in a war but died together.
the fact that he can't live in the world knowing that he killed his own brother, that's why he kills himself 😭
“I swear to protect the queen with all my strength. And give my blood for hers.”
Ser Erryk was faithful to his oath until his last breath, but living with the burden of taking his beloved brother's life was too high a price and impossible to pay. 💔
Criston Cole, in addition to blaming Arryk for the death of a child HE was supposed to be protecting, made Arryk fight his own brother to the death. the brother he described as "one soul in two bodies."
Alicent is a very bad mother, Aemond, Aegon, even Helaena, they are like that, it's because of their mother who never looked at them and never gave them affection, that's why they are all like this, different from Rhaenyra's family, who are all united. is if they love each other. In the scene where Alicent sees Aegon crying he could pick him because he is her son but she often prefers to have sex with her lover than pick her son, this just shows who she really is. That's another thing, it's already good with so many scenes of Alicent's sex is Cristian Col, we, the public, already understand that you want to show that Alicent is a hypocrite and I think it's cool that they are showing why she, and even us books, is envious too, but it's already good with so many scenes like this together, they don't even They showed Corlys' scene with Rhaenys and apparently there won't be Dameon and Rhaenyra, more Alicent and Cristian Col, wow, they actually have a lot of scenes of them having sex, disgusting. justice for Team Black
Not satisfied with everything she put Rhaenyra through, Alicent even took her room to fuck Cole... and Aemond took Daemon's. (Wow, how envious these green people are) Alicent only takes Rhaenyra's remains, have you noticed that 😂😂😂 Alicent is very jealous of Rhaenyra and Cristian Col will never get over a NO from Rhaenyra, they are very rotten, they hurt if they deserve it.
Now I understand why the critics only talked about this fight (Daemon & Rhaenyra) the whole episode was warm after it was over... Otto's scene with Aegon was great and the twins scene too that's all that was cool about this episode 2. (I liked it of the episode, but I found it more or less, but I hope that episode 3 is better than the first and second)

I've seen this come up in a few reactions so I'll address it. Kingsguard serve for life. Just because Ser Criston has been made Hand of the King doesn't release him from the Kingsguard. He is both Lord Commander of the Kingsguard and Hand of the King.

When he finds out about Alicent & Criston, will he blackmail her into marrying him? Especially if there's the possibility of a child.

  • @KimM13744
    @KimM13744 Před měsícem +7

For what it's worth (and feel free to disagree) I personally think Daemon's 'a son for a son' meant the King Aegon. He hates Alicent and 'a son' could mean either of her sons not the children. He thinks Alicent murdered Viserys. And if the new King is dead then the war is easier to win for Team Black.
Plus Daemon doesn't really have ambition for the throne, he cares more about the strength of their House than his own rise. He loved and hated his brother but wanted him to be a strong ruler. He did not moan when Rhaenyra was named heir, he was pissed that Viserys did not allow Daemon to be hand of the King but did allow his council to manipulate him. Daemon wants his brother love, that is why he surrendered his crown of the stepstones to him. Daemon was literally named a King and gave it up so he could go home to his family.
So for Daemon, The Hightowers (Led by Otto as Hand) have essentially infiltrated their family, a Hightower son is King, a Hightower is Hand and Daemon hates that.
He is filled with ego and anger but does truly love his family. Definitely not a hero but not exactly a full villain either.

Daemon's been a rather tactful hammer in this show so far, giving permission to murder a child is not as yet in Daemon's character, as much as every viewer is quick to disagree. Especially since the King's heir was not a valuable military asset and Aegon wants all out war now which is what the Blacks were trying to avoid. Even Daemon understands this was dumb, but his reputation of seeming wanton violence is coloring his allies' perception of his actions.

Daemon has wanted a war the whole time, why do you think he would think it was stupid? This is silly, to be so blinded by the fact that you like the character to completely deny what kind of person they actually are.

The ending of this episode stuck with me. Alicent can’t even bring herself to comfort her own son in his time of need, and instead went to Criston Cole AGAIN. In contrast to Rhaenyra who immediately went to hug Jace before he even started crying, it really does show the reason why Alicent’s children are the way that they are (Aegon questioning whether or not she loved him, Aemond going off to another woman for maternal comfort, and Helaena sinking away whenever Alicent goes to touch her). Their momma would rather get it on with their kings guard (who failed to protect them) than show them comfort after a traumatic event.
