    I had one of the dumbest HOI4 games with Romania last week...
    I did Balkans Dominance, took Bulgaria, Hungary, Greece, and Turkey as puppets. Missed the mark on Czechoslovakia because I was busy doing focuses for industry and had no idea how the claim stuff worked with Yugoslavia and it all went to Italy. Figured to myself no big deal because I'm doing Flexible Foreign policy and I can join the Axis to go against the USSR.
    What I DIDN'T realize is that the game had made a faction for myself and my puppets. The Balkan Entente. Didn't even notice, UNTIL the USSR comes asking for Bessarabia and I refuse, thinking no big deal I've got big daddy Third Reich to the north to help me against the COMINTERN.
    And then it happened.
    I get a pop-up. The United States wants to join my faction. Uh.... WHAT? In the span of 5 seconds I check my country tab, notice that I'm a faction leader for The Balkan Entente. I clicked that Accept button so hard I broke my finger. I got the US on my side in a war against the USSR in 1941. However I'm also at war with Japan now, which is fine because they're on the other side of the world... until the USSR falls because the US brought a million men to the fight and are helping me push. I'm literally in a race with Germany to reach Moscow.
    Then USSR goes down. I start taking territory, taking the heavily industrialized areas like I always do. I focused on provinces around the Black Sea and the Caucasus for oil and when I end the peace conference, the US, instead of changing the USSR government, annexes the rest instead.
    Oooook. Guess we're now moving all our stuff to go help China against Japan... except China has already kicked Japan's ass off the continent and is giving me military access. Cool, because with all the captured Soviet industry I can build up a massive airforce of torpedo bombers, heavy fighters and strategic bombers to just bomb the shit out of Japan.
    Fast forward to 1945. I have nuclear tech and three bombs. I bring Japan's navy down to allow for the nuclear attack decision.
    And that's how Romania conquered the USSR and nuclear bombed Japan in 1945, while being in a faction with the USA.

    Regarding your comment about the romanian language: Romanian is actually the remnant of a vulgar latin dialect (so the language of roman peasants of the area) that got mixed a little bit with the early languages of slav settlers in the region. I think because of the high concentration of roman settlers in the dacian provinces and the very mountainous geography, they got kind of isolated from the other roman provinces in the time of the slavic migrations. That is also the reason why in crusader kings 3 a ruler of wallachian descent cannot unite the southern slavs, despite being part of their culture group or the slavs in general.
    That's why it is in the romance language family and not the slavic family. And in their language the romanians don't actually call themselves romanians, but romans.Fun-fact: For a time romania was ruled by a cadet branch of the house of Hohenzollern, the same House that ruled the german empire.

    10w with support artillery, rocket, and anti-air is actually an incredibly strong division template, and incredibly production efficient too. The advantage is that it has 4x the org as a 40w for the same width. The disadvantage is that their attacks will be more distributed, which means that on average less will get through the enemy's defense. In other words, the 40w hits slightly harder, but the 10w can take a lot more hits. The problem is that 10w have a higher org:hp ratio, which is bad. They stick in the fight longer but take the same amount of damage doing it, which means they burn through equipment and therefore xp faster. Plus, since you're using attack support equipment, there probably isn't room for maintenance or field hospitals, so you can't offset the effects of that damage. On a difficult front, the xp level of 10w divisions will plummet. The other problem with 10w is that you need more generals to support the same amount of firepower. Overall, I think I like 10w slightly more. You can do a 10w cavalry division with cavalry recon and it has tremendous firepower per width, with a low cost, and without using any fuel, which is fantastic in low supply areas. Plus 10 attack groups can spread out more if they need to, making them perfect in Africa, Russia, and China. On top of that a 24 stack of 10w tank/mech with support artillery is probably the strongest in the game if you focus their firepower on a narrow point, and assuming you can keep them supplied and the terrain is favorable.

    • @zacharytaylor2423

      Can you cheese this and go down to 2 width? Obviously not for your whole army, but maybe a specialty force to break particularly important tiles.

    • @markdobbins8393
      @markdobbins8393 Před 3 lety +1

      @@zacharytaylor2423 Sadly they thought of that. You get a stacking penalty if you have more units than 1/10th the combat width. So 10w avoids the stacking penalty. Depending on the situation it miiiight be advantageous to go down to 8w or maybe even 6w but the problem is that penalties are additive, not multiplicative, so the more penalties you already have the worse the cumulative affect of adding new penalties is. In the open plains, during the day, against unfortified enemies you might be able to get away with 6w, in normal conditions you might be able to get away with 8w, but with any significant penalties you need to be at least 10w or it kills your effectiveness. It's just not worth min/maxing like that, so imo 10w is the minimum.

    • @zacharytaylor2423
      @zacharytaylor2423 Před 3 lety

      @@markdobbins8393 Good to know, thanks. I'll have to read up on the stacking penalty and figure it out myself, but my initial thought is that if it's based on the number of units rather than the unit size, perhaps there's some cheese involving mixed division sizes and a good reinforcement rate. (The idea being attack with the bigger ones first so they get targeted then fill it with your cheesy 2s.)

    • @markdobbins8393
      @markdobbins8393 Před 3 lety

      @@zacharytaylor2423 true true, it is the number of units. The problem is that afaik they retarget every combat tick, so your numerous 2w will get hit way more often than your big division, which will get very expensive very quickly. Another option is to have a bunch of 2w meant to absorb damage, cheap infantry, and then a big 60w meant to dish out the damage, it's just too much micro for my taste. Best of luck though!

    So, at some part of the video; you said that the garrisons take a lot of resources. (I know you hate manual managment, but this will help you a bit) you can change the garrison laws to benefit certain modifiers. For example: the law forced labor will give you 25-40% more resources from the country you are occupying. And there is a secret modifier in the marshall law/military governor that gives you 8% more recruitable population.

    I find it funny how they gave Romania and the other DOD nations very aggressive early Ideas while Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey have late game Ideas. Idk if there is a way to go for fast aggressive ideas as the BFB countries but I still have an easy time conquering everyone around as the DOD nations.

    I think the reason it switched to "Defensive War" was because you joined the Comintern. Since the leader of the Comintern is in a defensive war, it applies to you too. Not 100% sure, but that's my best guess.

    Hi Taureor.
    Have you noticed the option box at the bottom of the Spies selection box when assigning them to missions that makes them resume their old assignment when complete? Might help if you forget to redeploy them...
    Or if you have noticed it and choose not to use it then feel free to ignore my comment :)

    as someone who played Romania on BfB I know how annoying it is to lose Bulgaria, they NEVER refuse to be a puppet and you have to annex them before they join the Germans. (Paradox needs to fix it and the easiest way to do so is to make so they cant take that focus unless they are independent or part of the axis, where they can bypass it without them becoming independent)
