  • Renault will be updating the Zoe in the coming weeks, not only a new longer-range version but a six-seat self-driving version is on the way. Is there any value on buying a Zoe with a 40kWh battery?
    I try to explain in this video.

    The big problem remains - it's just too dear .As Jim Royle might say 'More affordable me arse'.. Not to mention the other problems such as range, battery replacement costs, rapidly changing tech which will render electric cars obsolete as newer models emerge. I drive a 13 year old diesel which I bought for 1500 quid. It does 70mpg , and has a range of about 1000km on a tank , which I can fill in about 5 minutes. Getting though MOT cost me 300 including servicing. Electric cars still don't make sense...

      bluegtturbo they make sense to the people that own them - I do 31000km per year for 600$nz of energy.
      We save 4500$nz in fuel cost and another 800$nz service cost (like oil changes etc.) our second hand EV pays itself in two more years -

    Regenerative braking is very useful in stop-start traffic as well as controlling speed going downhill, also saves on replacing your brake pads. If you really want no regenerative braking at all in an EV, put it into 'neutral'; unlike ICE cars, you still get power assisted steering and servo assisted braking.

  • @mondotv4216

    Well coasting is only the most efficient until you need to use the friction brakes. The regen is more efficient. Which is why I like the paddle system. I can coast when it works but I can also control my speed without using the friction brakes. Barely any brake wear on my 80,000K Mitsubishi PHEV. Tyres also last a lot longer which is amazing for a heavier vehicle. There’s a reason hybrids like the Prius, even with small batteries get excellent mileage - it’s called regen.

    • @keithwillis5662
      @keithwillis5662 Před 5 lety

      MondoTV Bob doesn’t seem to have much of a clue about the regen in the Zoe. The brake pedal is the regen all the way down to about 6mph unless you need to emergency brake. There is also regen when you lift your foot off the accelerator but it’s very mild. On my trip to work there is a long fairly steep hill and if I’m doing about 35 mph at the top then by the time I reach the speed camera about 3/4s of the way down I’m always at 29mph without braking at all. I do think you missed something very important about the Rekuperation because regaining battery power is only part of the deal. the thing is I am living on the continental Europe there are steep Mountains so if you go down the mountain with no brake assistance by the engine or other means you are getting real big trouble with your brakes. I drive hybrids which have very little Rekuperation going downhill and this is not enough. if I'm going down some decent mountainside I have to be on the brakes all the time which is not advisable so don't forget about Rekuperation for you have no Engine and you can't shift down to a lower gear in an electric car.
    So maybe these pedals in some cars aren't that useless ;-)

    • @philv3941
      @philv3941 Před 5 lety

      Don't know if it can answer your problem, but Zoe has a multi-patented brake pedal. Even in 2019 i think it's the only fully full electric one : an hydraulic system is using 100% the regen system till it's beggining not being enough, then the pressure is used on the discs.
      The switching is transparent for the User.
      You can have about 50kW of breaking power wich is huge.
      But many journalists ask for a B mode, and put the lack of B mode was default... so you will have a B mode in the new one.
      I prefer a real freewheel AND a full regen on brake than a B mode braking each time i stop accelerate...

    New Zoe on the way, 54kWh pack (vs 41kWh in the old one), 50kW CCS rapid charging, minor exterior redesign, more powerful motor and a totally new interior/infotainment (a big improvement on both those).
    This 41kWh pack is sticking around, will get the 50kW rapid charging and new interior and a €1-1.5k price cut from this car (~€23-24k battery owned, under €20k for the battery leased version (with a €50/month lease on the battery forevermore.....health warning is that a battery lease kills 2nd hand value, everyone wants to own the battery)).

    It all started to go downhill at “Let me show you around the inside of the car”, looks like a whirlwind in the disused parts bin of Renault/ Nissan and a flower pot factory.
    Maybe Ghosen designed it in jail!
    Having said that, with a few options added it could almost be the answer for those that can’t go for the more expensive alternatives; it needs seat height adjustment and despite what this reviewer says, it ought to have variable regenerative/one pedal braking. It’s nonsense to state that with these more energy is used, that’s why it’s called Regen, it is not “Resistance”! energy is recovered from braking or lifting off.
    If I were in a position to have a second car for town use, it would fit the bill, I am not so the ancient fossil burner stays! I am nowhere near convinced of the lPlanet Friendly” and lFossil Fuels are killing the Planet” mantras as the climate change green movement has now become a tub tbumping fad based on ancient data taken from woefully politically motivated computer simulations that are completely inaccurate and CO2 levels are well within the median levels this planet has had for thousands of years.
    EVs are great to drive and easier to maintain so once battery technology catches up there’s no reason to not drop ICE power. As it the batteries weigh half as much as the gross weight of these vehicles which means their range is pitiful compared to the power to weight ratio of hydrocarbon.
    Considering that despite this, they are capable of impressive performance and a (mostly) usable range, imagine how superb EVs could be with batteries a quarter the current weight.

      MrSinn I drive mine to work 5 days a week and at weekends. I’m not a high mileage driver, never have been but I’ve driven my Zoe ZE40 more miles in the last year than any other in the last 15 years. It’s more fun to drive than any other basic low spec car like a Clio, Fiesta, Corsa.
      You guys keep walking, but keep your ears open there might be an EV behind you!

    Forget Hydrogen until someone can make it without massive amounts of power and using fossil fuel to make hydrogen. Nobody has cracked making H from water in economic ways just yet no matter what the hype. No H refueling station in Ireland I know of (few in the UK). More than 70% diesel here and less than 5500 EV cars on the road not mentioning 230K car purchases this year (new and used) and 2.1M cars on Irish roads. So the EV share of Irish cars is 0.002% and preuming just under 4K Evs sold in 2019, thats .017% of cars sold. Average Irish car lifespan is 11 yrs so all in all unless the Gov gives us free cash then 100K EV cars on Irish roads in just over 10yrs is a joke just like H cars. Look how many LPG vehicles there are after yrs of cheaper fuel......

    Bob in your opinion, which is highly valued, is the electric bubble thankfully about to burst. Tesla's shares are nose diving and WM in China has also taken a huge hit.. Even the Chinese government has slashed its Grant's for these things and are trying to stop altogether.
    Hydrogen breakthrough maybe??

      It is true that subsidies for EVs are coming to an end in China, but on the other hand Chinese motorists in Beijing can now only get license plates for EVs. They have to wait 12 months to get a license plate for an ICE. EV sales in China are continuing to boom. As for Tesla. Regardless of what Wall St is doing to the share price, sales are going through the roof. The Tesla Model 3 is the 3rd best selling car in California by volume, and first by revenue. Have you driven an EV yourself? Even a low end EV like this Zoe is a joy to drive.

      £21k battery owned or £15k battery rental. More room inside than a Clio.
      I was given a Clio as a courtesy car when my Zoe went in for it’s first service, it was pathetic.
      Maybe the bigger motor versions are better but the 0.9l was a waste of space.
      I don’t know how far a 50cc scooter would go but I can drive from Plymouth to Southampton in mine, just charge while having a coffee and a comfort break and you’re good to go, all the way.
