Being young and not aware of the first two FOGHAT albums at this moment in time, seeing them on this episode changed my life from a music standpoint. I thought that "Home In My Hand" was incredible. Just as others have done in their early years, I went to my local record store and found the album it was on (Energized) and purchased it the week after this aired. It is still my favorite FOGHAT album (and they have many great albums). I've been a fan for 50 years and counting...I am 66 years old now (2024) and will always be a FOGHAT fan because of this introduction to their music. Wonderful memories. RIP Lonesome Dave and Rod.
Same here. But it was that beautiful white SG with the gold hardware and then Price's solo on Honey Hush that did it for me. Huge fan of Rod Price's slide playing. Talk about truly underrated. That would be Price.
Yep, I am also 66. I had an older friend when I was 15 who made some mixed tapes for me, since I was just getting familiar with good Rock bands. One of those names was Foghat, and soon after that they had Slow Ride on the radio. Their live album is still my go to album for a sunny summer day 🔥❤️
The actual name of the "mystery" group billed here as "Uncle Crusty" was the Venice Canaligators. We had been at the previous taping of the show hosted by Dr. Hook when the audience had to be evacuated due to what I recall was a bomb threat, though here it's referred to as a "power failure". The Canaligators were a street band at that time, so the guys fetched their guitars from the van and entertained the crowd as they waited outside the studio. As a result, we were invited to appear on the show, I believe the only unsigned band to ever do so. The players on this were Hook "Uncle Crusty" McGuire (harp), Bob Liepman (mandocello), Butch Mudbone (guitar) and John O'Leary (piano), all now deceased except Bob. I was to take John's place, who had been out-of-town, but he returned to do it.
Thanks for the backstory brother
.....Al Wilson.....Show and Tell.....is perfection........
Absolutely. No vulgar lyrics, no twerking, no autotune, no tattoos everywhere, just solid music.
The Stylistics singing "You Make Me Feel Brand New" is how you end a show.
Would make a great wedding first dance imo. Probably was for a lot of couples
No one had more fun onstage than Ray, Dennis and the guys!
Melissa Manchester!! And singing her natural ass off!! Thank you for posting this gem!❤❤❤
Dear God, thank you for making me a teen in the 70s. Amen.
Who’s rocking with me in 2024 to the midnight special come on now clap for the Wolfman. He’s gonna rate your record high
I watched them all -- class of 77.
🎵...gonna dig 'im til the day you die...🎶
TMJ BROTHER. 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Wow, another great trip in the Way Back Machine, the live chat was 🔥🔥. This was a fun episode, Dr Hook the Clown Princes of Rock and Roll! Foghat burned the place down, Lonesome Dave was teaching all us how to make a Gibson scream! Al Wilson was as smooth as 30 years old scotch. Peter Yarrow established in my mind his chops as a solo artist. Melissa Manchester, so good, so HOT! Uncle Crusty singing my Saturday afternoon song, except he left out the verse where he asked the jailor which drunk tank he was in (Or was that only me?) The Stylistics one of my all-time favorites, blubbered like a baby during, "You Make Me Feel Brand New", the perfect song for the end of the 9th grade prom, of to high school next year, and so long to my dance partner, the memories are why I return every week! Thank You Burt for this show!
Got the 12 speakers turned on. Ready for great Friday Midnight Special sound.
Good LORD All Wilson doing 'Show and Tell' live is some righteous groove!❤❤❤
Here's to those who can't be with us for Memorial Day Weekend . . .
Salute !!!
Thank you, for this remembrance! Sadly, Freedom isn’t Free…
🇺🇸✌️♥️
show and tell... so many memories with that song☺️
Goosebumps galore, a stone cold classic, remember those house parties and everyone brought some records.
Now that you have joined the cool kids, you need to watch the Alice Cooper episode before they take it down on Monday, they only have the episodes for up 4 weeks, and The Alice episode is a good one.
This song gets better with every spin! Pure bliss! 🙏🏻❤️
Many high school girl memories for me. I ❤ed that song back then. It also set a good calming mood at my school🥰. Thank you Al Wilson. The Stylistics also.
Many songs here I haven't heard since the early 70's, very hit and miss era of music
Melissa Manchester's first of several subsequent appearances on this show. SUPER 🔥🔥 and VERY easy on the eyes back in the 70s,
Melissa first appeared on Midnight Special in August of '73, again in Oct. '73.
This was her third appearance out of 8 total, the final one in March of '76.
@@Royale_with_Cheeze I *could* say that I made the 1st part of my comment erroneous *on purpose* just to see how many people (if any) would be able to correct it! 😆😆 Regardless, the far more important part of my comment was the second statement, to which I notice you didn't reply to, leading me logically to believe that we are therefore in agreement on it.
@@anthonykimball7463
Of course, Anthony. She was as beautiful as her voice.
I didn't know all about her 8 appearances from memory. There's a website that shows every episode and airdates. I did know that I saw her on MS at least once before.
Such a great show. I was 13 when it first aired in Feb. '73 (after the pilot episode in Aug. '72), and never would be allowed to stay up until 2: 30 in the morning to watch it, so these are all new to me in my grey-haired seniority 😊.
Now it's on at a very respectable 8 until just after 9.
Look up the words Midnight Special Episode Guide to find the source I use.
@@Royale_with_Cheeze I'm actually aware of that episode guide you reference, and I (obviously) *should have* double-checked it to make sure I was making a correct statement. I decided instead to rely on my memory....OOPS! 😆 Unfortunately, I was, unlike yourself, a little too young to be able to access MS when it originally aired (not to mention, too young to even really appreciate good music and develop my own personal musical tastes). It is a very cool thing to be able, thanks to the apparent partnership between whatever corporate entity holds the rights to the show and YT, to go through each of these complete episodes and select out the best parts. From going through that aforementioned episode guide, reading who appeared over the course of its eight-year run on NBC, I've concluded that the series' best years (your mileage may vary, as they say) were its' first two...the post-74 period certainly contained a few highlights, but there was an unfortunate overabundance of MOR "yacht rock" and disco.
@@anthonykimball7463
One more slight correction:
These episodes are presented here on YT in their entirety, reduced from 90 minutes to 1 hour 8 minutes because the commercials aren't there. These episodes aren't edited to give us the best parts.
I completely agree that post-'74 there's waaaay too much disco.
I bought the 10 DVD set Soul of The Midnight Special and am aghast at how many R&B/Soul performances aren't in it and how disco-laden it becomes.
Philly Soul is a forerunner to disco, but not the same. Straight-up disco isn't musically as interesting to me.
It served a purpose to get people to buy all kinds of stuff to go along with the lifestyle but as "music", much like Euro House music of today, it functions well in clubs but not in my ears.
Well, well...I was just referring to Al Wilson this morning on the morning clip! Yay! He'll be great. Some different tunes from Dr. Hook and I'll get to hear some Foghat. I don't know about their music, but I heard of them back then. Should be a cool show!😎🎉💜
Foghat will rock your socks off! They are one of my favorite bands going back to when I was a little kid back in the 70's hearing them on the radio.
I was a big foghat fan
-cheers !-

@@gratefuljr Yeah, somebody in the chat said that. I was like
💡🤦. Thanks!
Al Wilson “Show and Tell” with his backup singers voices - and the Stylistics “You Make Me Feel Brand New” songs are soooo very romantic and hit me right in the “feels” 🥰 department.
What’s not to LOVE ,,, eh? 😘
Who's that backup singer in the middle with Al Wilson I wonder ?
@@tonystevenson26
I’m sorry I have no idea, I couldn’t find out any of their names after looking. 🤷♀️
@@KittyGrizGriz hey thank you, she just looked familiar ....Burton Cummings of the Guess Who reminds me of Burt Reynolds , the actor 😃
@@tonystevenson26
Haha! Same dark hair.
I had a major crush on ole Burt along with my mom. He posed naked laying on a bear skin rug for Cosmopolitan magazine in 1972. Mom brought the magazine home, way to go momma! 😂
@@KittyGrizGriz Ha ha !my sister HAD that copy of Cosmopolitan when I was 12.....I used to sneeks peaks at her Cosmopolitans , it was my "playboy" 😃
Wow..was not expecting Mellotron with Peter Yarrow!
Loved the Stylistics!
Dennis is BAKED. And he still KILLED on the mic.
I may be going out on a limb here...but Ray prolly baked too!😂😂
🤘😎🤘
Completely stoned!
We went through bottles and bottles of Visine in the 70s.
March 1st 1974, there was a pretty good chance I was baked myself, Lol.
The sheer amount of talent on this show, week after week, is absolutely astonishing. Positively magic. And NOBODY enjoyed this show more than the guys in Dr. Hook!
Dr. Hook looked completely baked!
The Stylistics were the highlights of this episode! 👍✌
For me too.
Can't wait for this episode, I like Dr.Hook and the Medicine Show, it's one of my favorites.
Love me some Dr Hook! They wild boys!
Foghat is explosive! Al Wilson is such a good singer
44 years-old, I have been coming back to this channel every week for the last couple of weeks watching episodes trying to see if I remember hearing any of these songs before, and it leads me to an interesting pop culture rabbit-hole of Google searches and CZcams videos every single time. This channel is great. Keep up the excellent work uploading shows.
Excellent Midnight Special. Thank you.
I remember as a teen staying up to see my cousin who was one of the mystery band Crusty and the Canaligators. Neat to see again
I was with the Canaligators, though not on this show. Which one's your cousin?
Hell Yeah Foghat ! Nothing like turning your radio up and pushing it through cheap set of kraco speakers and getting lost why your driving.
My friend had some Kracos in the 80's.
That end performance was so beautiful
The late Al Wilson's "Touch And Go" from 1974 was also done by Cher (from 1971 "Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves" album) & written by Jerry Fuller who also wrote "Show And Tell".
Fuller also wrote some killer songs for Gary Puckett & the Union Gap.
Show and Tell..Wow. btw, thanks for remining us he's dead.
@@DeptOfRevenue Al Wilson died on April 21, 2008 at 68 years old. From Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Wilson_(singer)
Show and Tell is still one of the more under heard songs of its era.
@@TR-yi8up Al Wilson's "Show and Tell" used to play at the end of a Zac Efron movie which title escapes me. I wonder why they took it out.
Such great music and memories. Thanks Midnight Special
The Stylistics and Al Wilson bring back good memories for me. Their music had a calming effect at my high school. It helped create a good mood there.🙂
Cool to see that Dr. Hook was an early user of Peavy.
Al Wilson is so good.
Bro, the Midnight Special brings back some fond memories of HS!!! Wish we could go back to that idyllic time! The '70's were the most EPIC time period to grow up in, especially in So. Cal, girls, beaches, surfing, partying, repeat!!! The music is second-to-NONE-even to this day!!!
Whole back line of Peavy! Those amps sounded amazing!
Heavy as hell. Pure back breakers
Can't wait, The Midnight Special!
My mom taught me - If you don't have anything nice to say- don't say anything at All. Thankyou for your comment. But there are plenty of amazing artists here...🎉😊
The yodelling by Ray was fantastic!
Can,t wait for this episode looking forward to see Dr.Hook and the medicine show again. The best Live band ever
You're kidding! Dr. Hook was so dreadful the first time they hosted, it's hard to get why they were asked back. Maybe their first show got a high rating that day.
@@executivedecision6141 No I,m not kidding Dr.Hook has been my favorite band since 72 and love them soo much as host and the great songs they perform so greatful that they send these episodes.
@@executivedecision6141 I agree
@@executivedecision6141They were acting ridiculous on this show.
Fantastic show guys ❤️🥰
Great memories!!!! Thank you so much ❤!!
Was gone for a graduation just got home to listen! 🤠
The next episode from March 8, 1974 is another good one. It was hosted by Gladys Knight and the Pips, and also features appearances from Freshflavor with Richie Havens, Jobriath, Curtis Mayfield, Spooky Tooth, Les Variations, and Jim Weatherly.
Spooky Tooth - Yea!! 🤩😍😁
My brother was a Biker. We had some great biker parties and with my stereo system in my truck, we listened to this
Dr. Hook
Pretty sure the 2nd keyboardist for Peter Yarrow is playing a Mellotron or one of it's offshoots to get the string and flute sounds, you don't see those too often on the Midnight Special.
To those that asked: "scoring a hit with the song "The Cover of 'Rolling Stone'" in 1972, the band was featured on the cover of the March 29, 1973 Rolling"
Beautiful BVs on 'Show n tell' dynamite. 😮
The last time they were host. Dennis Locorriere looked like he had too much smoke. He was flying high.
sure was😂
I’ve heard that they were hosts in an episode from 1980, is that not true?
-xD ... !-
@@MozillaFireFox1967 It was 79 or 80. that was A good show. but that one won't be posted for years. unless they post on the member's page.

I was never on the cover of the Rolling Stone, but I was included in two different old issues.
I can't get off on the Rolling Stone but the robots think it's great.

I started watching this show when I was 10 or 11 back in the mid 70s.
Honey Hush = Train Kept a Rollin'
Two very different songs that perhaps sound alike to you because they were both uptempo R&B from the same era (early 50s).
Al Wilson....refreshing❤

@@sunnystormy4973 LOL
Foghats “Honey Hush” song sounds so much like Aerosmiths “Train Kept a Rollin’” song - originally written in 1951 by Tiny Bradshaw … hmmm interesting
"Honey Hush" was originally done in 1953 by Joe Turner, with whom I've played.
Two apresentations lost , The Foghat marvelous !
Wow!!❤
FOGHAT- energized!
Can't wait for Dr. Hook! Love them. Want more❤❤❤
Wished Al Wilson would have preformed his Northern Soul classic The Snake.
Peter Yarrow will be 86 next week. Father Time flies.
There has never been another band like..
Dr. Hook was my first concert in 1978.
❤ Na expectativa como sempre
They used a contraction in the thumbnail this time. Dr. Hook & the Med'cine Show. They just forgot to put the apostrophe there.
Anyone know who that background singer girl in the middle is with Al Wilson?...looks so familiar
I think Dr Hook and the Medicine show might be slightly high on drugs .
How high are Dr. Hook and the boys. A: Yes.
Is it me or is Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show hi?
The riff on Foghat's Hiyo Silver is Train Kept a-Rollin'.
The song is called Honey Hush .
1:07 - What's this Dr. Hook song called? I see on the timeline it says Ever Come, but I'm not familiar with that title. Does it have a different title or this just not on their Spotify XD

Is that Chuck Negron on stage singing with Dr. Hook? Guy looks a lot like him…
I thought he looked like him, too, but not him.
No that's not Negron. That's their original keys guy Billy Francis.
No, I’d know Chuck N. anywhere, had the biggest crush on him & saw TDN in concert at age 11. My 1st live performance.
Peter Yarrow singing about jelly...rhubarb pie anyone?
My grandma & aunt/uncle in Wyoming would grow rhubarb - we kids & cousins would pull it out & eat raw haha! My great aunt made the best 🍓 rhubarb jam I’m craving it now, thanks for the memories ☺️
Dennis is obliterated here.
Dr Hook only cover of the rolling stone bees song
uncle crusty? WHATTT? WHO?? Peter Yorrow?
I just posted a comment explaining "Uncle Crusty" (AKA The Venice Canaligators).
Dr hook is so freakin bizarre.
Dennis locorriere of dr hook is cokes up, BIG TIME! Probably the others too. Just sayin
That's a theme on this show.
Al Wilson's guitarist is FUNKY. Foghat killed it. Dr. Hook quite annoying.
Where did my money go? singers?
Butch Mudbone, Hook McGuire, Bobby Liepman, John O'Leary "Venice Canaligators"
Peter the Pedo Yarrow. He shouldn’t have been asked to preform after his conviction let alone pardoned. Love all the rest of the performers on this episode.
Dude’s stoned out of his skull😅
Love these shows, but I can't believe they let Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show host another episode. Embarrassing.
Maybe we can stop pointing out who's dead and who's not.? That would be nice.
Stylistics . Pure buffoonery
Maybe I'm talking out of turn here. I'm way over Dr. Hook. Please, no more.
They have a good one in the late 70s.
I'll scroll thru and overlook Dr. Hook to hear some more Lonesome Dave & Foghat for sure! It Is what it is...
Dr. Hook very annoying. Foghat killed it.
Peter Yarrow is a great musician, but ever since I found out about what he did (see link below), I can't look at him the same way anymore. Maybe he did what a lot of other famous musicians did too but he got busted for it.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Yarrow#Criminal_conviction_and_pardon
Yeah. Hard to look at Bill Cosby and realize that he was a "clean" comic, America's dad as Cliff Huxtable and the convicted rapist that he was.
Looking back at his hosting here on MS back in 1973, the all-girl band Fanny was on and he introduced them as "Four Fannies."
The signs were there, even back then.
