Very nice pieces here, and I really like Bruce's pieces, especially that bowl/plate.
This technique is commonly used by luthiers, especially for electric guitars. I'd recommend looking there on YT if you want more examples of using dyes and multi-layered finishes like this.

You gotta love wood turners...only a turner could stretch out a 5 minute project into hours by making the jig that makes the jig that holds the wood so that the actually 30 seconds of lathe work can be completed. Yes I am exaggerating but in the time it took you to make the tenon a normal person could cut the circle and grind the pendant shape on the little belt sander...there is a special place in heaven for wood turners...god bless.

I've got an idea when you're cutting out blank just cut 3" wide strips on a table saw then run them thru a planer on both sides. Hot glue as many strips as you can cut with the hole saw in non cut areas just a few spots will do. I do it this way and turn out a couple hundred in a very short time. Works for me! If you want to know how I do the rest ask me hahaha.

Question for you - the dyes you use appear to be Mixol-based. What do you add the color pigment to for the undercoat (you say something about alcohol-based for that layer), and for the upper coats (water-based)? Is it just denatured alcohol, and water? Or is it something else?

Eddie Schirmer it's an investment but you don't need 10000 dollars. you can do most of the stuff he does with a rikon mini lathe or a harbor freight lathe and be out 400. you can equip a shop pretty well with 2000. watch Craigslist and estate sales for deals. my friend found a drill press valued at 500 for 90.
