Mine just leaks when I put the water in. I didn’t have the silicon in the bottom when I received it. It was a wedding present.

The knob controls the steam function, not the brew function. If you want to brew coffee just press the button when the coffee light is on.
It seems that you don't know the machine very well. If you have one unit, you can read the manual on page 6 for a more detailed guide.

Can we put milk in place of water
