  • Join us on a powerful journey with Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah, World Health Organisation BreatheLife Ambassador, and founder of the Foundation named after her late daughter, Ella Roberta.
In this episode, we delve into the heartbreaking yet inspiring story of Ella's tragic death due to pollution-related respiratory failure, which sparked Rosamund's relentless campaign against air pollution.
In conversation with Quentin, Rosamund talks about the shocking statistics on respiratory diseases, particularly in children, and the important role EVs and other clean technologies can play in improving air quality. They also discuss how misinformation is slowing the much-needed transition to cleaner transport and home heating, and the need for greater political support for air improvement initiatives to improve public health and help everyone #StopBurningStuff

Thank you for inviting Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah for this discussion. I live near the south circular in Lewisham too, and frequently the air quality is awful. I've also been a carer for my mum who had severe COPD. There has not been enough subsidy or investment for EVs. Prevention is better than cure always.

The fact that we have made the particles invisible to the naked eye, doesn't mean we have reduced air pollution, just that we can no longer see it.
Particles that we can't see, the lungs can't filter, they enter the blood and travel to every cell of the body with the much needed oxygen. This causes cellular dysfunction, oxidative stress, and exacerbates the majority of diseases you can think of.

Thankyou for getting Rosamund to have her views put out there, very important. Don't be silenced by the few there are many people who are in favour of this, My friend and myself will often take people on to show other people they are wrong with the information they are putting out there, the good thing is the narrative is changing. Oil and Gas is starting to loose there control.

This is one of the reasons we need to emphasise more. Zero tailpipe emissions is valuable in and of itself. The Victorian fog ‘pea soup’ was caused by home and industrial fires / pollution.
Those who have the money have a moral obligation to stop polluting cities. Those that can take public transport have a similar moral obligation…in the 70s and 80s we were poor enough to only have 1 car (for dad) and the rest of us took public transport (or walked) no matter how inconvenient.

This has to be one of the most important Podcasts yet. I actually got a lot more interested in air pollution after watching Tim Smedley at Fully Charged Live (2018?). I bought his book Clearing The Air and it was full of facts, research and his personal experience. I recommend his book, it is essential reading. I carry a pollution monitor on a lanyard on my travels now, because of this book. I often get warnings to leave where I'm sat, while I'm sat on a diesel train! I've just got back from 3 weeks in Zambia (I was asking permission from my fiancé's family for us to get married) and I think it would not only improve the health of so many by getting rid of gensets for batteries/solar and electrification of transport in places like Lusaka, it would also massively benefit the Zambian economy. Africa has to be a great place to push for electrification and stop the vested interests pushing for more use of their fossil fuels there. Solar and battery storage will work perfectly there. Many many thanks to Rosamund for everything she does and is doing.

What a fabulous, wonderful human Rosamund is. Thank you so much for this episode - it's always an informative and engaging listen, but I think special thanks have to go to Rosamund for tirelessly bringing to the fore the desperate need we all have to clean up our air. It shouldn't take the horrific story of her daughter's illness and death, and as she says, the millions of deaths worldwide that are directly related to air pollution, for us to care and want to change our societies for the better. Quite frankly, it's shameful that more isn't being done given those truly heart-breaking losses.
For my part, we are doing what we can with what we have, though I wish we could do more and faster. We have switched to an EV thanks in no small part to a very competitive salary sacrifice scheme at my wife's work. We're aiming this year to switch off gas entirely, and we were able to get solar panels up very recently - which I know have been seen by people driving along the busy road we're near in Oxford. We're lucky that we've been able to make these changes, but as a society we should absolutely be doing more to enable everyone to get away from fossil fuels - which, as Rosamund said in the episode, almost everyone would like to do!
The fact that not everyone is in a position to make the changes they may like to is yet another symptom of the desperate and worsening inequality in our society.
Thanks also to Quentin, Robert and the whole team at #StopBurningStuff and #FullyCharged for continuing to beat the drum.

And (for balance, of course) not long after a new battery pack, which might be a tad more expensive ...
We should not forget that batteries can be abused simply by aggressive driving styles and consequent frequent recharging, which of course affects its longevity, so to speak.
We should not forget either the noxious smoke or fumes given off by burning batteries, viz the recent episodes of three burning buses in London Town.
Google will help you identify the poisonous gases emitted by burning lithium ion batteries and the materials used in construction.
It begs the question of are we less exposed to poisonous gases from batteries or exhaust gases in terms of toxicity?
And dare we ask if there is a temporal element, as in length of exposure to the gases emitted?
Who can furnish a definitive answer as we type?
Might batteries prove to be an as yet not fully understood environmental disaster?
Are health authorities working to uncover damage to humans by atmospheric pollution caused by burning batteries?
Isn't that why we have Environmental Health departments? Or indeed could we see interest from Occupational Health departs. Or even from the HSE?
The SBS campaign is to be welcomed without a doubt but could it be that battery fires are even more of an environmental disaster than the gases emitted from exhaust pipes?
If anyone can supply a definitive response then let's read it.
Suggest however battery huggers don't come up with silly responses such as migrating to sodium ion tech, say. Nobody has any idea of what's emitted if a sodium ion battery is consumed in a fire resulting from third party causes.
Perhaps Quentin would be better employed telling us what happens in a battery stoked fire as in the risks to our atmosphere and consequently health.
Might be one or two asthma sufferers who would very much appreciate the answers.
And of course voters could always write to their MP to perhaps table a question during PMQs.

Maybe a different perspective from Canada. I watch some auto repair and ev channels, and it seems to me that ICE technology maxed out 10 -15 years ago ( my ICE car is 21 years old). Newer models look good on paper, but taking into account exceedingly complex technology that seems to be increasingly unreliable and costly to keep running, EVs look more attractive all the time just on that basis, let alone on environmental issues.
