The raw, gritty feel to this vlog was really cool, less music and more raw sounds of the rain and what not.. peace !
Here again loving your journey
The real and true feel to this vlog is brilliant! Keep pressing on Matt, Jayoe!
As you are discussing the water going to your bum and then all of a sudden, high-speed hydroplaning down a mountain in a rain slicker. That's entertainment! I'm laughing the whole time. Good times man. JaYoe.
Your videos lift my spirits.
Riding in the rain is really all mental strength. When I rode Seoul to Busan (similar route as you) there was a typhoon on one of the days. It was also the longest day at 160km and included four big hills(one we did in near pitch black night). It sucked but it was also awesome. Really endurance test. And the shower and food and beer at the end of it all was something else! It remains the most memorable day of the trip.
Great video
Glad your soggy day is over.Nice to see nothing got wasted in your packs and bags 💼! Just some drying out to do.Shower, food and sleep and u will be good to go! JaYoe!
Excellent video, Matt! I really enjoyed the rain terrain footage.
Great vid Matt. Really enjoy your films.
Use plastic garbage bags inside the panniers, and the large ziplock bags for everything that's water sensitive, extra protection so you can enjoy the ride.
ha, first comment. You have no idea - every day I am checking for update from you. Really enjoy your positivity.
I was looool
What a soppy video. I was just waiting for the bubbles in the warm tub to be turned on.
"I'm marinating in some Matt soup." Lol. And dude, flying down a slope in the rain seems dangerous!
Good ride.
Hey Matt you should replace all those small bag with dry bag they are sealed so no water can get in. Have a good day. Can't wait to see some Matt reef tank videos 😆😉
Grest video! Just a thought... Could the dense cloud coverage during rain be interfering with your Garmin's satellite signals?
I put balloon tires on my trike. I reworked my Catrike front fenders with some 20 year old plastic fender blades from an old 26" bike (forceful bending to the Catrike fender frames required) then cut some makeshift mud flaps out of a detergent bottle. I haven't attached the mudflaps to my trike fenders yet. I'm hoping they will be supple enough to take thousands of hits yet stiff enough to retain shape when influenced by water, mud, and wind. The fenders have been doing their job so far but clearance is minimal and an occasional pebble gets launched noisily forward. Thanks again for the inspiration. P.S. that downhill looked dangerously fast for conditions.
If you don't get going during a rainy day you won't know the reliability of your wet test....At least now you know your wet structure management and learnt how to improve it later on....
Hats off to you for doing this ride when it's pouring rain like that. I seem to remember, scrolling through your vlogs, you had a veltop once. Why did you ditch it? (can't find that particular vlog and didn't watch it at time )
I will ensure my pants are both cinched and attached to my shoes somehow with an elastic band. I will be using toe shoes as they are good for wet environments. My trike is getting multiple upgrades this year and I will begin my weight training both with and without a trailer. I hope to leave in June and head out for a couple weeks. And again in July. Thanks for your video. It’s helped! 👍🏽
you can also fiind the rain cloth for driving motobike
that's perfect for driving under the heavy rain
and the size of the rain cloth is quite tiny
The days which I would choose to ride in the rain are often weighed against how heavy the rain, ambient temperature and if there is wind. I can get chilled easily on these kind of days and possibly risk catching a cold. I also don’t see all those potholes in the road very easily as my glasses get all wet and fogged up. Another big issue is how well car & truck drivers can see me. I’ve been in thunderstorms and seen recent lightning hits along roads which tells me get off the road and seek shelter.
Your are tough guy Matt. I like your new sunglasses. The make you look like Bono. Cool.
First Again loooool, What going Matt, ride On Rain is fun.
WingedBull1 ha Rian or Rain!
The problem with the Garmin is the change of air pressure during the change from rain-front to clear weather.. The garmin using a barometer to figure out the degree of incline and decline. :-) So now you now why Garmin goes bananas with the numbers. :-)
+Velonatic aaahhhhhh! That makes sense! Thanks for that insight
in the uk we have things called bicycle clips .they are made from sprung metal and you put them round your ankles to keep your pant legs from getting into the chain but they would stop water getting up your legs .look on ebay .
@the JaYoe Nation Japan has some of the hardest, “sky cutting” rain I’ve ever seen. 頑張れましょう!
Hay Matt,
I'm kinda surprised that you didn't take your top like you had on V1 and 2. Would have been nice on this particular day.
Hey Matt, just seeing that now.... Concerning rain jackets you know what they say!? "The only and very purpose of a rainjacket ist to seperate the warm water from the cold water." :D
How was your backpack attached to the trunk rack? Does it have special hooks?
Iam glad that everything of ur stuff is fine
Hi, Matt. I am really enjoying the bits of footage with the DJI Mavic Pro. Nature around Hokkaido really looks quite spectacular, I might have to add a ride around those parts to the cycling around the Seto Naikai (Shimanami Kaido) experience (which is absolutely amazing, I imagine you'll get to do it later in your tour), although I would be more careful when approaching red-crowned cranes with the drone if I was you. They are endangered and one of Japan's national symbols ;)
I wanted to say... there's a gazillion people going to Hokkaido every year solely for the purpose of visiting the onsens around Noboribetsu, and yet you chose to ride trough the rain via a route roughly parallel to the one which would have taken you to onsen nirvana... was that something you missed on your research or just not all that interested in onsens?
Good luck on your travels (...and pay a bit more attention to your rear mirror, please 😊)
Good music choice
What type of jacket are you wearing, does it get clammy under it? Great vid by the way.
Congratulations on making that ride in the rain when so many would have stayed indoors. I'm not sure I would have braved that downpour. I didn't even notice you'd lost your fenders too. That's a shame. I have Ortlieb panniers. They've never let in a single drop.
You should get a Veltop attachment (transparent rain cover) for that trike.
They are relatively inexpensive.
I have one for an upright bike and it works well in the rain
I have one. They are just a tad heavy. And I like to be open.
@@JaYoeNation I see .
I had to modify my Veltop so that it didn't flop back and forth and I agree they are a bit heavy
I don't have a problem if it rains on my ride but it is not something I willing look for. I found that wearing Goretex pants solved the slow progression of cold water seeping into the nether regions.
Check in military surplus for "Blousing Straps." These were elastic with hooks to help keep pants in boots
+Mike Berk good idea. I'll look around
Why did you give up your Veltop? I seemed to have missed that somewhere?
matt look in to some water prof spray for them bags there are some really good ones on the market now .
Sometimes quiet is best!!
I really like the plotline... How you hesitate at first but end up having fun.
It's great, that you also show when something goes wrong, this is so authentic.
With regards to the panniers, didn't you have Ortlieb recumbent panniers once? What happened to those, were they too small?
In a previous video, Matt told us his laptop computer and the cameras didn't fit in the Ortlieb recumbent panniers.
Thanks for the answer! I only recently came to this channel, already watched a lot of the episodes but couldn't find that.
What do you do with the bike at hotels?
It's about time somebody got round to draining that swamp.
are you selling the Jayoe caps.
its one of a kind... i wanted to make more but never worked out.
Are you wearing Columbia Watertight Jacket?
"Should I stay or should I go" The Clash 1981 😀
I have been giving your wet weather issues some thought, and remembered that Ortlieb makes a great set of panniers called Back Rollers Classic waterproof pannier bags that are excellent, Little Pricey but I think that the cost of a new computer or other components outweighs the cost of these panniers.. Oh..! And they come in yellow your theme color for JaYoe Nation...! I hope this was some help for you..! You are going to travel some countries which will be a little wet, and if not now somewhere down the road they will become extremely useful.. Ja Yoe...!
Nice wet vlog at the beginning, you came thru ok. Some gaff tape at the end of your trousers would have stopped the water from getting in. A very good vlog
Thanks for that hint Brian Rayment. I too have a recumbent trike and I'm seeing from this vlog my need to do a wet weather shake down trip before starting a longer trip.
I lover my recumbent trike but when it rains it is impossible to stay dry over a longer peridod of riding it. If you have rain gear that could keep you dry you will sweat like hell and be wet afterwards, too. There is a huge advantage in an upright bicycle with a poncho. If it isn't too cold i try to wear as less as possible and have extra clothes in my pannier bags. If you wear merino wool it even keeps you warm when it is soaking wet. Synthetic fibres are a cheaper and less efficient option.
Textile bags always have that problem in heavy rain. The water enters from the back of the bag (where the rain cover is open) and is collected there. Even if there is mesh to let the water out is soaks the fabric. use drybags inside, a heavy plastic bag or if you aren't a weigthweenie build a perfectly fitting inner bag from PVC pond liner. PVC can simply be glued while other polymers give you a lot of trouble in bonding them together.
👍
Yes about the fear.....
Matt will you be doing anymore live streams
As much as those Panniers cost, along with the rain covers I thought they would be better than that. They are on my wish list. About 6 hours in the rain, they should have performed better. Makes me rethink....
Ditto on the zip lock bags. Seam sealer on the paniers.
lol thought you were rapping in the beginning.
That's not true ....
I have a rain jacket and its Completly waterproof when the pockets are open....
Whatever happened to the podcast?
audio is ok
With a Veltop your ride would be more comfortable!
you should do a podcast while you cycle
A simple trash bag can solve all that, like using the trash bag as layer inside your bags before stuffing all your things in.
How come you didn't wear the glasses?
😂👍🏽
Poached rump of Matt! Ha ha ha ha ha ha
Matt soup? LMFAO!
Watching 10 June 2018
I wonder if it would wotk wearing glasses with a layer of silicone rubbed on to the front of the glass to expel water?? And good luck draining the swamp😂😂
There is a product for automotive windshields called Rain-X available in the USA. It's used on real glass and promotes the formation of large beads of water that roll off without making a film. For the first few hours after applying it to my auto windshield visibility is actually better without the use of the wipers because of the uniform pattern of the dispersion.
those velcro things that are meant to keep your pant cuffs from getting caught in the chain might solve your.... swamp situation.
HAHA thanks
You need some RainX treated goggles.
Done my Share of WET RIDES on a HARLEY. Rode towards a TORNADO onces ; as it hit 10 miles in front. * GLAD I STOPPED SHORT. Also HIT by LIGHTING... Well Hit the rode in front but felt the shock. Got Home to Find a BURN on My Bottom ; where jolt went into frame ! * Have you gotten rid of your Helmet... would have thought; been wearing in rain & if Hit again & MORE STROBES NEEDED ? Thought you might of had those Glasses on. Maybe a GRINDING Shield would Work ? VICARIOUSLY ... I tasted the rain ! JaYoe
Drain the swamp lol
You should wear yellow not black! For safety!
you need a goggles in the rainy day~
rain hurts!
looks like your rig could use a windshield ;)
haha.. nawww... it was refreshing!
wearing shoes or small boots help with your water ass problem! lol I know all to well about the SWASS
i can not imagine riding anywhere at speed in the rain without eye protection, that is just begging for blurred vision or sand particles.
It looks miserable experience out in the rain!
Enjoyed your video. Looks like a vey lonely place. You got hit by Harvey and Irma.
There's no reason you couldn't hold an umbrella while you ride the bike in the rain. ya know
hold an umbrella, rid the trike, and record? that's awkward.
@@JaYoeNation Mental picture LOL
Considering what your lowest point is in this situation, you could try diapers to stay dry. :p
