3DS MAX & Maya Indie -- $250/year With Some Gotchas*

  • This year at SIGGRAPH, Autodesk announced new Indie version of 3DS Max and Maya, their flagship DCC applications. At a price of 250/year for the full versions, they represent a huge savings over the full cost... if you qualify based on your country, income and zodiac sign. Just watch out for the gotcha!

As someone who does 3D-art for a living and use Maya I would freaking love it if I'd only had to pay $250 a year for the full version, but Maya Indie is not supported in my county. If I switched to Blender it would take ages for me to come as proficient in that software and I don't even know if it supports the very very specific needs I have. I also use a 3rd party rendering software that isn't supported by Blender.
People who preach one software over another have no comprehension of reality. If an indie 3D-artist who valued his work at 30 bucks an hour (very low btw) would change from Maya to Blender he would lose money in the grand scheme of things. If it took him just one day to learn the basics of blender he would have already lost the benefit of Blender being free for that year. He would lose hundreds if not thousands of hours learning to get as proficient with Blender as he/she is with Maya. Getting the free software is not always the cheaper solution.

d .byn Because they offer stuff that Blender doesn't. Plugins for other popular tools like Substance, better UV unwraping and Rigging tools, the Arnold renderer, a better general workflow (for example everything apart from the deformers in blender is destructive. Check out mayas history or Max's stack), the fact that if you wan't to get a job in the industry blender is a huge limitation or some comanys using huge self developed plugins for them for a long time. Just to name a few. There are a lot of cases where Blender get's the Job done very well but there are also cases where it lacks key stuff. But if you are doing something where Blender is not a limitation then yes, i agree it's better to not spend money and use Blender instead. It really is a great 3D program and completely free after all. But you have to understand that let's say a company like Ubisoft producing the next Assasin's creed won't pick blender. The prices are not a big deal for them and even if it just means they get the same results a bit faster or have an easier time recruiting new artists thats probably already enough. And there simply are features they need that blender lacks so its off the table for them. There is a right tool for the right task and the right user. For some tasks/users that answer can be Blender for others it's something else. If for the stuff that you want to do Blender is a valid choice then great - enjoy a great and free software package. But you have to understand that there are valid reasons why someone might use something else.

And the common question he's always asked is if it will EVER not be free or ever be bought from him and he said he has no interest in either of those.
Hell, he was also offered to integrate Blender and Maya in terms of addons and workflows for both, but because of Blender's Open Source license, it conflicts with Autodesk's commercial license on their products, so if they did that type of thing, both Autodesk and Blender would be breaking clauses of their respective licenses.

Hell, he almost failed at the start trying his damndest to keep it free, and now, it's the best thing he's done. Yes - they are standards in the industry. But there is less and less reason for it to be like this. And you can feel a shift in the Userbase. Especially indies. Now with also large companies like Ubisoft and Epic giving Blender more street-cred things might really change.
I also think that it's time that the "you should learn Autodesk software because it's the satandard" has to stop. As long as people still think this is true Autodesk can keep up their current ways. After all what keeps Autodesk running for a big portion of their userbase are established working pipelines in companies. New users emerging with new companies setting up new pipelines... there's now a threat to the established high-priced industry for the first time. Blender pouring so much effort into usability and accessability was the best thing the software did since going open-source I think. And I really hope this shift will hold up and maybe really stir things up and change some established thinking. If Blender can keep up and even increase the steady cash-flow even after Epic's 3 year plan has ended then things are looking really REALLY good. After all other professional 3D software often times also has asrtoundingly small core teams just that Blender has also EVERYBODY else with the Open Source advantage.
Either way, I personally think it's time to break the cycle! Don't recommend Autodesk just because it has the image of being used everywhere.
Running scared or catering to indies - probably both reasons in different amounts. Atodesk has enough money to not be scared but they certainly have to notice. Also Indies have been a consideration for years now. So far this has been Maya LT.

absolutely great deal. I love Blender and have been using it for years, but Maya/Max are industry standards, period. If you want to work in a big studio, more often than not you will need to know Maya or Max, depending on the industry. People don't seem to understand that many of these large companies will not be switching to Blender any time soon, not because Blender isn't capable, but because they have already invested time (years even decades) and money building custom tools and pipelines for Autodesk's software. Because of this if you want to work in feature animation, VFX or games, you should learn Maya/Max maybe even Houdini, and this is a fantastic deal for those that want to do some commercial work in this software. That being said if you are an indie 3d artist and have no intention of working in house at a studio then this is not for you, Blender is all you need and more. But when I watched a guy 3D model in 3DS Max I knew I had to learn that, and I cought on in a few days.
I do not do anything so grand outside that makes Blender any Better than 3DS Max, but the main force for me to switch is the fact many people make cool models and character rigs for blender and getting them to work within 3DS max is not worth the hassle. Once I learn how to properly navigate Blender 2.8 I feel like I can get my butt back in gear, but right now there still a sense of fear and unfamiliarity. Also apparently, this is a pilot programme, so the first list of countries are not going to be the only countries getting this, they want us making noise and demanding for the indie tier in as many countries as possible to gauge out the demand. Its kind of stupid to think about but if I'm being charitable, it's possible there are some things they have to take care about before rolling out to other countries.

Granted, Blender 2.80 is still about one and a half generations behind Max and Maya (if one is pessimistic), but it is catching up quickly, and the current indie/retro scene has proven to game creators that graphics take second seat behind gameplay and story.
Of course, for movies, graphics are still important, but even there, we reached the limit of what is needed. And to my knowledge, the only reason why Blender is not showcasing levels of epic realism equal to the pay-per-use packages from Autodesk is because nobody as of yet bothered pouring that time and effort into tutorials or hobby projects. Seriously, we don't know if Blender 2.80 is already powerful enough to create visuals like in the fight scenes of Spider-Man Far from Home, because nobody tried....but I am pretty sure, with the right amount of effort, precision and a strong asset library, it is not far off. I don't see any reason why Blender can't become industry standard with the current product generation.

That depends on the department. It's miles ahead of Maya in modelling tools and customization abilities, stability, and UI/UX. It lacks some minor features like UDIM support which will come in 2.81. It's on par with Maya in terms of rigging, but it doesn't have out of the box tools for muscle simulation (which one would probably rarely use anyways). There's still space to grow but in some areas it's way ahead of many packages out there.

Blender is not free. Though you don't have to pay for the software itself, the costs associated with training staff to use it, convert tools and plugins intended for Max/ Maya, and integrating the software into existing pipelines are all far more expensive to studios than paying a license fee to autodesk. Couple all that with the risk of not having license/ technician support if something goes wrong, and that becomes a deal breaker for studios adopting Blender whole hog. Unless that changes, and it might (ahem tangent Animation), Autodesk software will continue to be the industry standard. As a freelancer, it would be in your best interests to have experience in all three applications at minimum, and this deal makes that far more accessible.

Is the full price renewal still applies in 2024? I don't see that anymore in their Indie License page, but I don't trust that.
