  • Autodesk estimates that 6 million of its users are illegal and hopes to convert many of them to paying customers.
Well, the answer to this question actually depends on whether it is a single user or whether it is a studio or company using illegal software.

They talk about the billions in 'loss' due to the pirated copies of the software. That is working under the assumption that every person who has pirated it would pay for it if pirating it was impossible. But i think that the vast majority of people who pirate it still wouldnt buy it if pirating it was impossible. They would go for an alternative. 3D Software were always very expensive. 3D is not for everyone, that's why. Same for any Industry or Community. You wanna get in? Pay the price. Besides, When you're making money using 3D software, charging appropriately (high), the cost of software is negligible. Although, when you have a huge team, that cost rises. You can still afford the software if you have clients who need 3D services, and these clients already know they need to have huge budgets ($100K USD and up) for some studios.
As a Blender user myself, even though Blender is free, that doesn't mean people will stick with it or any 3D software. Learning 3D is very hard.
Those who stick with it, deserve their place in the industry.
Learning 3D or any other skill is not something a relative or parent can give you as an inheritance.
You have to earn your skill. That's what I love about 3D.

In a roundabout way big companies like Adobe and Autodesk gain by individuals (not companies) pirating their software, because it means young people who couldn't afford to pay for it are still learning to use their software. This helps keep them as the industry standard.
If piracy wasn't possible, a lot of the people who now pirate expensive software would wind up looking for cheaper or free alternatives, like Blender, Affinity Photo, Krita etc. This would in the long run make these better able to compete with the industry standard software through a combination of a bigger user base and more resources to improve the software itself.

Autodesk doesn't realise that their practices are the reason why people pirate their software and they deserve it in my honest opinion, Keeping a really expensive subscription service, Making it harder for the average person to just acquire their software, Ruining Maya for every year since the release of Maya 2016 by adding unneeded features and making tools unstable and broken compared to previous versions(and also the terrible ui which get's shuffled each release making it harder to get used to and the increased instances of crashing), limiting to only the recent releases instead of letting people use previous and unsupported versions (which people need for a variety of reasons like preferences and plugins that only work with previous versions of their software) and so much more. It's laughable how greedy Autodesk is honestly.

Moreover, if they strictly wanted everyone to pay they just create the certificate version of their products which mean whenever people use their product to finish any project they must show the certificate that they have a real one yet this method is to put their company at risk of not having people using their product or considering their product at all. Come to think of it, blender is a free open source ..... if Autodesk is strictly prohibit people from using the crack version then most people are switching to blender or other open source program and that's the big draw back for Autodesk itself. When 3dsmax was at it's peak, a lot of people bought it, in Autodesk made a lot of revenue from it. Autodesk, then went ahead and used those monies to buy Maya from Alias. At that time Maya was a competitor to max but Autodesk did not see any importance to invest in max. As time went one, newer versions had minimal updates but they were charging huge price for it. When their focus went on to Maya, Max begun to have bugs and minimal to no updates. For instance Character animation studio has not seen any better improvement for decades. It now has bugs and decades old versions performs better in that regard. In the 2016 version, you can't have more than 5 cameras for videopost rendering. Above all, they have allowed third party plugins to be better than their standard ones. Their Fire and smoke effects have not seen any improvements for over a decade and cannot be compared to Blender after all these years. What is the benefit of buying an expensive software and ending up buying a lot of other plugins for it? Certainly, many would pirate in order to have money to buy the other plugins.
Autodesk has lost it's direction and destroying max. The gradual abandonment of 3dsmax is giving room for Blender, Houdini and other softwares to occupy the vacuum. There is still hope because people are still clinging to it.

If they made their software alot cheaper, they would have alot more paying users. A small studio or some hobbyist won't be able to pay that much to use it. And you cannot buy the full package anymore, you have to pay monthly, yearly or 3-yearly. A beginner in 3D modeling will NEVER pay $200 or more per month to learn modeling. So they either use free tools or search for pirated copies. Simple. I know 3DSMax was $6000 one-time payment some years ago. Now you have to keep paying forever to keep using it and will cost you ALOT more in the end.
