The only way that a Nissan V6 engine would've failed like that is if the owner didn't change the oil enough because they're a very durable engine at least until Renault started building 4 cylinder engines for them.
I got about 500,000 kilometres (300,000 miles) out of a Nissan RB30E 6 cylinder engine yet an auto wrecker I knew had a dozen of them which had failed at 183,000 kilometres (114,000 miles) because they were gunked up with sludge meaning that the owners didn't bother getting them serviced !

You have it right when you say you have to start from scratch. I have done electronic diagnostics most my life and when other techs give up and ask for help they always try to tell me everything they have measured, swapped, etc. Often times if all that they told me was true they would have either fixed it or it would already be working. I would ask for a major symptom and stop listening to any other information as it would often lead you down the same rabbit hole. In fact if they would have just started over with an open mind they would have likely found the problem.

Nothing wrong with soldered connections, by far the strongest most reliable joint if done right… biggest problem is cheap soldering irons not putting enough heat fast enough into the both parts of the joint causing a cold joint… decent quality irons at the right temp and there’s no issues… mil-spec is better if you can follow it, but heat is critical… and 50/50 plumbers solder isn’t for electrical, 63/37 has the fastest rate from molten to solid so the parts have less chance to move when cooling… nearly ideal Eutectic phase for the geek…

They go through all that trouble to swap the engine but didn't bother checking the integrity of the harness. Whats funny is that whole harness is easy to pull out as a unit when replacing that engine. Thank God for idiots. They create a market for us Techs!
