  • Let's take the Celica for a good test drive while monitoring the EGR system and try to recreate the "surge under load at 60mph" that the customer is concerned about.
    Not an easy diagnosis, but we nail it at the end, and provide a "budget-friendly" solution :)

    Thanks again Ivan, you are a genius. The surges are now a thing of the past, my gas mileage has improved by at least 10%, and I easily sorted the other problems you diagnosed. My engine light is on as predicted, but as you say there are no emissions testing here in Bedford County so not an issue. 👍😀

      The "correct" amount of EGR during PT operation allows a bit more spark advance and better fuel economy. Never argue with good results !

    Ivan thank you for teaching us - I am writing from Caracas Venezuela - you really are unique in your way of explaining things - I've learnt so many things - but the best technique I am learning is using the current clamp for testing batteries, charging systems and watching the current direction to look for shorts - it is jus amazing and unique and nobody else explains the way you do - and I think nobody uses because simply they do not know or have these fancy tools but just using your great and beutiful technique is just amazing - I say the same Steve (simple diagnostics) says: "YOU ARE AWESOME" - thank you

    Ivan, I'm 70 years old now. When I was a teen, I remember that tires being out of round was a more common problem. The tire shop I used had a machine where they would mount your wheel and tire and actually grind away the high spots making them run true on the tread. They always had a pile of rubber dust around that machine. Keep up the good work!

      I'm 63 and I remember when they used to shave tires to make them round. With the garbage tires they make today it looks like they need to start doing that again.

    As a GM EGR Product Engineer "back in the day" the fix on those older systems was to cut the end off a Golf Tee and put it into the line as a block and reconnect the vacuum line. Invisible fix! In New York emissions were not required to be functionally checked yet inspections often included looking to see if the systems were intact. So no CAT delete pipes, missing EGR valves, visible "Golf Tee" deletes or "Blue Tooth" connections. Great diagnostics.

    On older EGR systems like that I would make a metal blank to put under the valve in order to block off the system but it would look stock. Once they started putting flow sensors on them, doing that would turn on the money light. Another great video. I love the way the mind of a scientist uses logic and deductive reasoning to solve problems.

    Ivan it's David Keller, hey just wanted to pass on alittle knowledge. I'm a mechanic in Northern Ohio and the last couple of weeks I've had a few later model Hondas with what they call a flutter. It's a hesitation around 45 mph at cruising speed. It feels like a surge or if it had a fuel filter, a plugged filter
    Or an egr with partially blocked ports...It's even visible on the tach...long story short there's a bulletin for failed transmission fluid. They want you to drain and fill 3 times. I was skeptical but after the first flush I could feel a difference! It even felt funny when you let off the throttle and coasting. After the 3rd flush it was a different pilot(2017) then the the next day I had an odyssey. Same thing! I figured I'd share this cause you may see one...be good Dave

    Writing this as I Am watching. Ivan, just bleed off a bit of the vacuum signal. Start with a very small drill bit and your problem may be solved. And the Egr remains operational. The bleed port just dampens the output vacuum signal. GM actually had a TSB years ago for this issue and that was their fix. They just used a vacuum tee with a brass drilled orifice for the bleed. Works Great!

      yeah, that would probably work. I wonder if the EGR valve is supposed to have a bleeder orifice integral and it's plugged/rusted over, I've had that a bunch on GM's. some of them you could find the bleeder orifice on the metal part of the pot and clean them with torch tip cleaners.

      You have a good memory! The TBI “flat spot” was very noticeable in the pick up trucks! You didn’t have to drive far to feel it! A lot of “ mechanics “ just unplugged it! That cause instant ping! Head too hot! The answer WAS the “t” with the bleeder vent! Mostly found in my junk drawer,problem was they were hard to find ! Once I found what Import had them, I ordered 6 or so, went through them pretty quick! Magic fix & cheap! That brought back great memories ! The first GM fix was an updated EGR with a “very” restricted vacuum port! Expensive & didn’t work near as well as the bleeder “T”

      Did this on Subaru cars in the 70-80’s at the dealer. Used .22 caliber pellets and small drill bit. Got rid of surge and still kept combustion chamber temps from getting excessive.

    Tires are flat spotted from sitting in one spot for months. inflate 10 psi over recommended during storage or put on stands over winter.

      Yeah, it was sitting for a year after the owner died. I bought it for $1200 as part of an estate sale. I was worried also about possible gas contamination so changed the fuel pump and filter and run through various cleaners and a couple of tanks of Shell premium. Can't afford to change the tires right now or address the coolant leak and one or two other things, but they are on my To Do list!

    Hey Ivan many many years ago Toyota had some bulletin out for a either surge or lack of power. What they came up with was a inline restrictor valve it was white and yellow squarish. when you blew threw it (via mouth) and timed it one side went much quicker than other. So we would install this in the egr line and that would resolve the issue 99% of the time. The 1% that it did not fix did have a greatly improved performance and the customer that it happened to were OK with it. The EGR does lower combustion temp too and back then being in a dealership we could not just block off the egr due to state or federal law whatever applied. BTW for example only the hose id was lets say 2.5 mm? when you put that restrictor in the line it went down to lets say .5mm just because of the design so you did not have the volume and restrictor in the valve delayed and possibly did not open abruptly. This was a very long time ago.

    Great call - EGR valve spring weak - and excellent results from the pressure transducer!
    I've seen brand new tires running oval, right after installation, and some brands don't accept the complaint.

      All tires have more or less vertical throw, none are completely round. If there is too much vertical throw, road force balancing should be used.

      Was this your celica , I'm having the same fan issues and wondering if I can put the temp switch where the actual drain plug is.. the plug that you use to let coolant out the radiator ?

      I also have a 94 celica but it's the 1.8 and noticed the same loose cord - confused because I have a temp sensor on my water pump house and a temp send on my thermostat housing ..

    Back in the 80's and 90's, we use to fit a little ball bearing into the vac line to disable the EGR valve so that the engine was always getting clean air 100%.

    The parts cannon didn't get fired this time, not even close! Great diagnosis and solution for a 25yr old car and budget driver, great job. That 2.2L will run for decades with oil changes, amazing engine. I know the car would be a lot nicer with a manual trans, but that low-tech AT is well matched to the engine in terms of durability. Shame that old cars end up neglected but it's the reality of people just needing transportation on a budget.

    Extra points for finding the EGR problem. Experience paid off. Most people would have just quit when they suspected a tire.

    You could crush or dent in the top of the egr valve in an effort to compress the spring. Thus increasing spring rate. Which might help keep it in range. We used to do this to turbo bypass valve on the 1st gen DSM's (Mitsubishi eclipse, eagle talon, Plymouth laser)

    I learned the hard way a long time ago that it's a bad idea to cheap out on tires. The US tire companies took many years to learn how to properly make belted tires. Now it's the chinese. I bought nothing but Michelin for years but last time I bought Good Year, BFG, and Firestone for my 3 vehicles and they seem to be doing fine.
    The first radial tires in the USA appeared about 1965 as a Sears tire. They were Michelins, tube type, and had a 40,000 mile warranty which was real because Sears never discounted those tires. I bought 2 for my hot rod chevelle and they had 39k on them when I sold the car and they had a third of the tread left. Bias tires at that time lasted 8k on the rear and 15k on the front. And the mileage on those Sears tires was about evenly split on the front and rear. They got little traction but you couldn't wear them out, it seemed.

    Real fix is a new EGR. Not good to drive around in a car with the check engine light on all the time because you won't know if anything else is going wrong. Also on some cars it can cause problems because the timing map is assuming the EGR is in operation. Some older GM engines with no knock sensor would ping like crazy if the EGR wasn't working.
    I am glad that EGR is one of those systems which you don't see anymore though, at least on gas engines..

      It's a $1200 car. My real concern right now is the price of gas. If it keeps going up I won't be able to afford to drive to work.

      EGR is alive and well, and better than ever. The absence of traditional EGR valves and vacuum gizmos is simply decades of evolution. And yes, many older cars got noisey as EGR failed. Chrysler's were absolute pinging machines even when EGR was working correctly, but when EGR failed, "MOPAR" would be changed to "MOPING".

    I love videos on 80s-90s stuff. There were computers but much simpler so I can understand. I have an 89 GMC S-15 that I'm trying to get running right. Runs great except for a stumbling idle.

      Had a car sit fo 9 years. Then had to return it to service. Tires had flat spots and had to be replaced even though they had plenty of tread.

    Be warned. The ECM will add spark advance during EGR to account for the reduced volumetric efficiency when breathing inert exhaust. So you can easily end up with pinging by disabling the EGR without the ECM knowing. Also the car may very well throw an EGR performance code. I'd replace the valve.

      Now it makes NOx.
      That's bad.
      We had a delay/bleed to manage objectional valve operation.
      But that's on a different make.
      We also found very small rocks in our cold blooded ones.
      The tiny specs would cause hitching.
      Not surging, technically. I don't know if it helps, but that car had that constant cooling fan for all that time.

      @@dannylinc6247 FWIW, I had a 93 Caprice ex-police car that I eventually had difficulty passing emissions with. The car did have a lot of miles but in the end I ran some of my cleanest dyno runs (before my state stopped the requirement) with just two stock 95 Impala SS cats. I had long disabled the EGR system due to it causing a nasty surge at low RPM. I also tuned that car so I could play with spark advance and stuff like that but like I said, the last dyno run it did was quite clean and did not have any EGR functionality.

      @@kevin9c1 then you were making NOx emissions.
      A deadly gas.
      Laws or no laws.
      We had selective orifice sizing for some of ours.
      You added a restriction washer that had numbered size inlet hole.
      If it's a racecar, that's not running all day on the street. But for the public, this is part of the attempts to manage the driveability.
      It's supposed to work at cruise. When combustion temperatures climb up to 3600°F.
      The hitching some cars would get could be EGR leak by, caused by the tiny rock like deposits in the pintle.
      I don't know if any of that helps you now. Or if a GM application had similar attempts by engineers, but we also had delays and or bleeds.

      Gm cars I saw, people just put a plate there and said, no, not spending if they don't make me.

    Just a P.S.A. for anyone that is interested. I have a buddy in the tire industry that showed me first hand that if you pop the bead on the tire and don't allow the pressure to bleed off completely before filling it to the correct pressure it locks the tire in a stressed position and makes them wobble. The fast tire shops often don't take the time to let the air escape so the rubber can relax and find center so you might want to find a small shop that is willing to take the time to do it right.

      Never seen that phenomenon personally... Usually it's a Chinesium tire that isn't round and bounces the car like a basketball haha

      @@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Back in the 80s and 90s I had a series of Mercedes cars and they had super-expensive Michelin MXV tires and omg, they were garbage! They went out of round and had other issues and Michelin told me it must have been my fault somehow and denied my warranty claims. I installed some high end Bridgestones and never had an issue again, so much for me not knowing how to use tires, doh. I agree with you generally than cheap tires are junk, but even expensive tires can be crap too, ugh.

      Yes, I agree. South Main auto did a bit on this as well. When I purchase new tires I ask up front before any work is done if they will allow me to inspect each tire while it is on the balancer so I can verify proper install, balance and look for defects in the tire itself. If they start spewing OHSA this and insurance that just leave. Telling you that you cannot enter the shop space is only true if you do so unattended by a staff member. I wish employees would read their employers insurance policy and OSHA regs before slamming the door on such simple customer service requests!

    A dab of silicone on a #8/#6 machine screw pushed into that vacuum line would do for a plug. Time for some tires, easy and obvious need. Good diagnosis using the pico and vac pump.

    Some of those EGR systems would plug up in the head so that the furthest from the the EGR valve would plug up in the head and all the EGR flow would go to one or two cylinders which caused combustion problems. Your right about the valve spring. They only take so much heat over a certain amount of time.
    Customer's happy, good job all around.

    I had a few vehicles through the years where the EGR valve diaphram spring got weak. It's usually more noticeable with a carbureted engine.

    Interesting series. I own a 00 Camry with the same engine that threw an EGR code (don't recall if it was too much or too little flow), I did a little research and decided if first take a look at the air filter-turns out a field mouse had made a nice little home there, since cleaning that out is been rubbing fine with no codes, but since it doesn't get a lot of miles I'm expecting there might still be a issue with the rest of the EGR system. If the code comes back then I'll be looking to do deeper diagnostics and I'll make sure to keep this video handy as a reference. Thanks Ivan!

    It would’ve been interesting and perhaps helpful to have monitored the MAP signal during the test driving. The degree of MAP increase in response to the EGR vacuum, at the small throttle openings particularly, should give some indication of excessive EGR flow.

      EGR systems have been causing tip-in hesitation and driveability issues since they were introduced. An entire book could be written on the subject, and half the book would be how to dial it in.

    I would say.. since the car has been so good to you.. 25 years .. 200,000 miles +- paying for a factory EGR at the dealer cost of 130$ w/gasket.. I think she’s worth that much.. but that’s just one guys opinion who loves Toyotas and you also wouldn’t be staring at that stupid light .. the problem with the engine light always being on is you won’t necessarily be warned if more problems arise.

    My late grandfathers old mechanic just cut & silver soldered the exhaust gas pipes which screw into the exhaust ports in the Holden 2.85 litre (173 cubic inch) Holden 6 cylinder "blue" engine (they came out as a red & Blue engine in Australia) then he silver soldered the pipes up, they were the pipes for the EGR valve in his old 1983 model Holden VH Commodore.
    That was a cheap fix since they are has to find & a lot of the vacuum switches were broken anyway, they would've been hard to come across in say a 32 year old car 🚗 which was about the last time he drove it (2015),it would've been an illegal fix but his mechanic didn't think that he was going to drive it for much longer !

      Those pipes were for the air pump not the EGR for the 2.85 motor

    For what it's worth (very limited worth), my wife's '97 Camry was throwing a code for "Low EGR Flow" - I can't remember the P number. The issue was a solenoid on the back side of the engine under the intake manifold - nearly impossible to reach. At about 2000 RPM, the computer would turn the solenoid on (don't know what all the programmed variables or logic was) and that would enable the vacuum to enter the system and start opening the EGR. I guess it was looking for a change in the MAP sensor or something - obviously, there is no flowmeter measuring the EGR flow, but it somehow "knew" the EGR valve wasn't opening! Different problem, but maybe related to yours in this case. New valve fixed the problem that time, but it didn't get mounted where the old one was! That and a connection issue to the left rear wheel speed sensor were the only computer-related issues I ever had to fix on that car. But I did spend hours and hours fighting oil leaks. The oil pump o-ring was cracked and it looked like the pan gasket was leaking. Oh, yeah - I had to replace the heater core, and that was terrible. She sold the car with about 260,000 miles on it. Other than the oil leaks and that doggone heater core...... Oh, wait - the power steering rack and pinion leaked. I had to drop the subframe to change it out! It was a good-looking car, though, for a 4-door.

      it monitors the MAP/MAF and O2 sensor/s for changes that match against the known tables. if it doesn't match up it sets whatever trouble code and light on.

    Good as usual man! But Im surprised that ther is no pinging, especially under load , by disabling EGR the engine should have higher combustion chamber temperatures. Oh well, as long as the customer is happy 👍

    On my Volvo 2.4t I have disabled the EGR system in the ECU and did a delete. Also have done a catalytic delete and some other stuff. The only downside is that sens the new ecu I have to run 98octane. But the bonus is I went from 200 somewhat lazy horse to about 300horse with a decent powerband. Did also delete the turbo regulator not needed 😂 and the turbo boost sensor I've put a tiny leak valve in so the ecu is happy about the boost pressure and does not cut spark/injection due to over pressure 😎

    Just stick a restrictor washer in egr, I did that and found the happy medium of no ping and increase HP on GM 2.5L 1989

    Interesting that MPGs actually went up when you disabled the EGR. I guess it was opening to the point it was doing more harm than good.

    Ivan, even if your location doesn't have inspections I cannot recommend strongly enough that you DO NOT announce to the world on CZcams as a licensed business that you disabled an emissions component on a customer's car. The EPA can still climb up your ass for it and THEY WILL if they get wind of it. We are talking major fines at best.

      I AGREE 100%. I cringed when he announced that he was disabling the system. As a former smog mechanic in California, I am certain that Uncle Sam would not be happy with this particular solution.

      I would tell the customer “If that hose fell off or got plugged it would run better” and leave it at that.

    Great Job Ivan...Nicely done. Had a thought that might have helped on monitoring the EGR intro to intake...by using your vac transducer on the intake and watch the vacuum drop or possibly scope the MAP sensor itself in the same manor. I'd bet it would show a fast drop in intake vacuum. Maybe on a future case study perhaps. Anyways, Thanks for sharing with us. Cheers

    Ivan, just a thought. I had a 1985 Datsun B-210 that had probably one of the first EGR systems on it and it had to be cleaned every now and then to perform as intended. You mentioned a spring could a little "carb" not throttle body, cleaner help. The cleaning of my EGR was aimed at the seat of the valve.

    I had a simmilar problem with a dodge dakota i had about ten years ago, i removed the EGR, replaced it with 1/4 plate steel and gasket, ran like a champ.....k

    I had an 86 Oldsmobile with Michelin tires, which I let sit for months without driving. After I started driving it again, all 4 tires eventually failed as the steel belts separated inside them. The tread literally came apart from the body of the tire. One failed on the Interstate 10 bridge across Lake Pontchartrain which was an interesting experience! Just a guess, but most tires might do that if they sit long enough due to constant distortion at the same spot on the tire where it hits the ground. Constant pulling on the same place, where the rubber is bonded to the steel wire might eventually cause the bond between them to fail. But it might have been a bad tire design. Hurricane Katrina flooding got the car and the new tires. Got the house too.
    Think how many mechanical devices wouldn't exist without the simple spring. They support modern civilization.

      It's all crimped. It'll be destroyed by the time you get to spring. And, if it is back pressure transducer EGR valve, there is some interesting stuff going on inside that puppy.

    It’s lean PHAD..On these vehicles you have to remove the injectors and flow test them with a Fuel injector flow rate and cleaner set-up.

      It’s not a “weak” EGR spring..the engine is lean when u remove extra lean fuel mixture (EGR) the engine runs better because the engine is lean

    One not so common Toyota problem I've run into was the port from the EGR back pressure transducer would clog where the hose went into the exhaust passageway. If it clogged completely the EGR wouldn't work at all, but if it was partially clogged the back pressure would get trapped in the transducer and cause the valve to open too much and stay open too long until the back pressure bled off. It would cause surging and sometimes the engine would stall when the throttle was released. How can I order one of your pressure transducer kits? (with banana plug adapters) a lot cheaper than Snap On.

    I once had a 1973 Buick with a 1976 engine (455 4 bbl). The EGR was disabled on the new engine as the original 73 most likely didn't have it.... I got nearly 5 mpg more by fixing the EGR. Some engine designs actually like recirculated gas as it cools and slows the combustion in the cylinder. in any case I just replaced and EGR in a 94 Saturn and the valve only cost a few bucks new. Two screws and done in a few minutes... worth getting rid of the idiot light.

      However this isn't 1970s carbureted technology anymore. Any fuel injected engine will adjust the mixture automatically, and obviously the engine has more power breathing fresh air rather than exhaust gasses 😉

      @@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Yes and no... some systems actually use the exhaust gasses to slow the burn to prevent detonation. An EGR system can actually keep the engine cooler. And yes, I was absolutely shocked to hear that. Not that the 76 Buick engine likely had any detonation at a 7.6 to 1 compression ratio. Back in my day... when streetliners and dinosaurs roamed the highways and primordial marshes, I was a pretty good diagnostician... I even still own a CRT scope (not that I've used it in decades) and I've got a bidirectional scan tool for Ford. My health prevents me from doing any serious work but your videos kind of keep me mentally in the game... Thank you.
      And in my day, we just sucked on the diaphragms to test them... vacuum gauges were mostly for fine carb adjustments and no one with healthy lungs had a vacuum pump.

    Back in the day we would smack the top of the egr valve with a hammer until we got the desired egr flow, hit too much and it doesn't open.

    Hi Ivan, Too bad ya couldn’t pick up a used EGR valve. Might have been a good way to prove out your diagnosis. The only problem you might have with disabling the EGR is an increase in NOX emissions since the EGR’s job is to cool the gases down and prevent premature detonation or knock when accelerating. Good diagnosis

      Not All Counties In Pennsylvania Require Emission Testing And In NJ My Brothers Jeep Is Exempt From Emissions As 1995 And Prior Are Not Required By Law To Be Tested

      I believe Toyota used a temp sensor in the EGR passage to confirm it’s function. No raise in temp would be equated to no flow. Light would come on ☹️

    Tires, if you're going to park your car for long periods of time tires will suffer, put the car up on jacks that or roll the wheel, 12 one month then - 3 the next - 6 - 9 o'clock back and forth if you get my drift.

    I dislike these type of customers, firstly the try fixing it themselves. Secondly, they want to spend the least amount of money with you because they already spent lots elsewhere. Thirdly, they never come back for preventive maintenance.

      Because the EGR is a symptom to an underlying condition the engine is lean. The engine has restricted fuel injectors and need removal from intake manifold and serviced in a fuel injector flow tester/cleaner tooling

    Someone would have to show me the numbers, but this is a gas car burning gallons of gas, and I suspect an hour of driving is more into the atmosphere than a year of gas tank emotions. I know the car companies fought it but someone caved and probably traded something else like millage requirements or a California dictated it with their market.

    This is one of your videos in which you become one of those you criticize, a hack. A vacuum delay valve should of been the answer, for the EGR to open at a little higher rpm but no, disconnect the EGR and allow higher NOx be the answer. How many uninformed are going to watch this and plug off the EGR valve. Some times you disappoint but acting smug about a wrong repair is wrong. Fix it right.

      @@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics keeping meticulous mpg records as I drive to and from work. Probably filled up 6 times since you worked on my car. I was getting around 26 mpg, I am now just shy of 31. It is runs as sweet as a nut, as well it only burned a quart of oil since the last oil and filter change 4,000 miles ago, not bad for a 4 banger with 234,000 miles! Still got the square tires but can live with that, will put nice new ones on when the tread is worn which won't take long!

    Yo. IVAN just wanted to say say that I would have just unplug the e.g.r. then test drove it. But maybe I have been doing this before you were born. But besides that did you know that tempering with and or disconnecting emissions systems is a federal affence and you can be fined by the Environment Protection Agency??? So next video maybe be careful of what you do because of your comments you have incriminating evidence that can be used against you...
