    There are few reviews of cars I have owned with which I agree as thoroughly as I do with this review. We replaced our 2015 Tesla Model S P90D with a Model S Plaid last August, and we took delivery of our Lucid Air Dream Edition in late December. The Tesla just turned 10,000 miles, and the Lucid has racked up just over 8,000 miles.
    Although the Plaid''s software has not been without its glitches, it is vastly more responsive and reliable than the Lucid's. Just as Rettinger says, Lucid's OTA updates have offered some improvements in the seven months we've had the car, but they're not as frequent or as comprehensive as I would have hoped.
    Yet we're putting over 1,300 miles a month on the Lucid and just under 1,000 a month on the Plaid. Why? Because the Lucid is a considerably better car for both driver and passengers in every aspect other than software. Though the tiniest tick slower off the line than the Plaid, the Air's front end stays much better planted under hard acceleration, making more of its prodigious power usable. The Air's suspension is both more compliant and more precise than the Plaid's. Road and wind noise are better suppressed in the Air, despite the Plaid's use of active noise cancellation. The Air has noticeably more structural rigidity. The Air's interior is considerably more comfortable and roomy than the Plaid's, and the fit and finish is much better. The Air front seats are more luxurious, offer much more adjustment (including thigh support extension), and have top-notch massage functions. And the rear seat space of the Air simply blows Tesla rear seating out of the water.
    Although Tesla's software performs better at this stage, some of that advantage is offset by the greater ease of operating features in the Air such as audio volume, AC controls, lights, wipers, drive modes, etc. -- most of which have their own switches or haptic buttons that don't have to be accessed through menus.
    Then there's that yoke. My partner has gotten used to it and finds it okay. Ten months have passed, and I still can't stand it.
    When the Air first joined the Plaid in our garage, almost every EV trip was preceded by a discussion about which car to take (unless we were picking up rear-seat passengers, which always meant the Air). With each passing month, we find ourselves more often defaulting to the Air with no discussion unless there is a particular reason for taking the Tesla . . . and one of those reasons is that we're so addicted to driving the Air that we're worried about how fast we're running up its odometer.

      Tesla is a software centric tech company and happened to have built a car. Lucid is a hardcore automotive company that’s building a next-gen luxury car. Experience pays off especially in the long run. People who love driving and cars will see and feel the difference easily.

      @@kennys4100 So true. I've been telling friends to pay particular attention to Rettinger's remarks beginning at 3:20 in this video in which he explains why he thinks the Air is the best driving car he's ever owned or driven. I just want them to understand I'm not the only one who goes on in this vein about this car.
      Over the years I've owned a Corvette, a Mercedes SL55 AMG, three Audi R8's (V8 coupe, V10 coupe, V10 spyder), two Tesla Model S's, and my fair share of German luxury/sports sedans. While some of them have bested the Air in one aspect or another, none have come close to attaining the blend of power, handling, comfort, room, and features that Lucid has brought into near-perfect balance in the Air.
      We have had a Rivian R1S on order since February 2019 to replace our Honda Odyssey minivan and complete our conversion to an all-EV household. As Rivian's production delays drone ever onward -- and as we've become better acquainted with the Lucid Air -- we're now thinking about keeping the Honda until Lucid's Gravity SUV hits the market.
      Maybe by then they'll have these endlessly annoying software issues in hand. 😐

      @FayezNajeeb1 Před rokem +3

      @@kennys4100 Tesla has the edge over software and infact everything else for being 10 years in the market. I'm extremely confident it's just a matter of time Lucid & Rivian both get their softwares sorted out. I mean Tesla till date messes up and screws up their software and then keeps patching them. As long as there's the required hardware - the software would catch up for sure!

    • @FayezNajeeb1

      I'm so happy to read your comment! I can't wait for my Air Pure to arrive. I'm straightaway going to trade-in my Model 3 and go Lucid. My only concern or fear is that I'll miss the SuperCharging Network that Tesla has created.

    • @blakespringpasturemortimer9168
      @blakespringpasturemortimer9168 Před rokem +9

      @@FayezNajeeb1 We recently did a 2,000-mile road trip in the Air. Because of its considerable range, we had no trouble charging when necessary. However, the Electrify America network still has a long way to go to match the Tesla Supercharger network. While we never arrived at an EA station where we couldn't charge, we had to plug in more than once at every stop to find a cable that was providing juice. Some charging towers were simply dead, some gave connection errors, some required a second attempt to start charging.
      Electrify America is rapidly expanding its network, but the early problems that arose from having to use multiple suppliers for equipment -- each with software incompatible with the others -- are not yet washed out of the system. Also, many EA chargers are on the far edges of huge Walmart parking lots with no nearby places for a snack or bathroom break unless you want to hike over to the Walmart. More Tesla Superchargers are located in strip malls with multiple break options closer by.
      The upside of EA chargers is that you'll get to see an array of different EVs that are often hard to spot or examine in traffic. At a Tesla Supercharger all you get to ogle is an array of Teslas -- most of them white.
      (I know you can charge an Air at any CCS station, such as ChargePoint, EVgo, etc., but only EA has the automatic handshake feature with the Air, has 350-kW chargers . . . and we have three years of EA charging included in the Lucid purchase. With a relatively inexpensive adapter, though, you can charge a Lucid at Level 2 Tesla destination chargers that are often found at restaurants, hotels, strip malls, etc .)

  • @JasonJones-br3or
    @JasonJones-br3or Před rokem +45

    I think the problem here with the software is that Lucid is relying too heavily on bloated third-party software development. The ground-up linux approach tailored to an EV system seems to be the way to go, which is incorporated into the Tesla.
    We experienced a similar issue with a Honda Clarity; I wouldn't say it was as buggy as it was slow.
    The intermittent software issues with the Lucid are a little disconcerting, especially after the length of time you've had the car, especially the rear camera issue... that's something you rely upon in these cars since conventional rear visibility is not very good at all. Intermittent bugs in software are also very difficult to track down sometimes, and that's annoying when it impacts the basic functional operation of the car.
    I'm glad you're enjoying your ride, and good luck with your purchase!

    Regarding interior scratches. I bought a top of the line BMW and I notice scratches too. But, they were on the front passenger side. I wonder where the scratches came from. It took me awhile, but I use to drive an engineering coworker of mine. He was fidgety kind of fellow and I use to note while driving hime that he'd fidget on my arm rest lots. I never thought anything of it at the time. Well, I put 2-and-2 together and realize the scratch marks were of his doing, since I didn't have anyone sit in my car. (I'm single, and it was a sports car.) There were plenty of scratches, none that could have been done in one sitting. Just putting this out there, perhaps it will jog your memory and you'll figure out what happened to your car.

I myself own a Tesla, but we shouldn't let companies like Tesla, Lucid etc. off the hook. They need to step up. And I think Lucid should be under even more pressure to deliver, because it's 2022 not 2012. You could've forgiven the drawbacks of Tesla Model S in 2012, but Lucid is not the first and the only EV maker in town. I appreciate the looks of the Lucid Air (it's original, but not my taste), but from what I've seen the software and usability side isn't that great.
      • infotainment bugs of this magnitude are a scandal honestly - car not starting for 45 seconds? Does it have an old diesel engine that's been left in the cold? :)
      • Internet not working on an internet connected car is pretty hilarious :)
      • that pop-up screen is a repair waiting to happen. They could've easily designed it without such fanfare for the sake of fanfare with simpler layout
      • "autopilot" features and cameras not working is something you wouldn't accept in a Volkswagen
      • UI - down to preference, but I don't find it particularly pleasant to look at. It's better than most car manufacturers, but it's not on Tesla's level in my opinion.
      What I like is the screen real estate, the shortcuts are a good idea and yet I feel they could've used that screen real estate more wisely. For me it's just too many places to look at and interact with. it has 34" display, but it's divided into separate "windows". Maybe that's just me, but this layout and use of these screens reminds of "regular" cars with their plethora of buttons, panels etc. I would expect more simplicity and forward thinking design from a start-up EV manufacturer.
      I hope they do well, because I would love to have more good EVs on the market, but right now Lucid may be a good choice for celebrities like John, who can get a direct line to the CEO :)

    Lucid's factory expansion is going well and will quadruple the size of it's AMP factory size. When this new factory segments start producing vehicles this should be a great catalyst for the stock. As Tesla has shown profitability only comes with high volumes. The demand is there for EVs - EV demand is exploding. Lucid has great tech which would appeal to companies like Aston Martin who might want to partner with Lucid for their battery & drive train tech.
