I'll be super biased and fly the flag for the Leon Cupra 280-300. Power of the Golf R, but better to handle and a good ~150kg lighter.
I'd personally love one of the f80 M3 tourings that a few people have built, they look mental
Mk7/7.5 GTI just does it all imo, I've had a few golfs over the years. Very versatile. I'm currently looking at fiesta sts, they're great little cars
They do it all but are they not a tad boring?
@@dylanwakley2553 tbh, yea that why I'm looking at STs and the mx5 NDs. I think it also cos I've had so many of them over the years
Don't buy an St, it'll be nicked before you know it !
By far the best podcast of the week. Big love, kindest regards, Richard U.K
Can you imagine if someone takes a photo of your roadside Porsche and post it on social media and claim “Sam hides his broken car, Porsche pays him to keep quiet” and so on, you are becoming successful, there will be loads of people to who won’t hesitate to take advantage. Keep up the good work! Waiting your DB12 review the most, after seeing all the others already.
I reckon the Seat Leon Cupra is £ for £ the best hot hatch you can buy used
Great episode!! Hopefully the GT3 will get sorted quickly!
As a Proceed GT owner it hurt my heart that Sam hadn't even heard of it 😢 lol
Sam is quite snobbish when it comes to cheap cars
@@rds6962the way he treated that guy who bought a sweet M3 CSL let's you know that sam's car knowledge is extremely limited and full of himself.
@@tomasdebarros1426 Exactly. I still remember how sad his friend was with the way Sam was ripping into his car.
How about you take on Tony's M3 Touring and Tony finds a new home for Truffle, would that be possible? Thank you for the show, looking forward to Car Park Chat next week!
I think you were correct about M. E46 and E92 fit the description of a lot pain and great reward.
Finally an episode! Been waiting a week for this! Thanks guys, keep up the good work 💪🏻
I love this podcast. Gives me happy vibes every time
Exactly!! I always save them for Friday's, as I'm finishing my exercise. Always puts me in a good mood.
Good to hear you talking about the gaydon era vantage! I’ve got one and it’s got it’s fair bit of bills/maintenance (seals, clutch etc) but engine itself is bulletproof, not much electrics as you say. Lots of emotion though and the sound of that NA engine is worth everything!!!
mk8 Fiesta ST all day. I own one for 2 years and it is the best you can buy for the money. Bought mine, full spec in 2021 for 24 500 euro for a 200 bhp car with an LSD
I liked the fiesta ST till I drove 1 and everything felt tinny and cheap looks the part but build material choices are questionable
@@ThePoisonDwarf1i‘d rather get an I30N for the Same Money (used)
@@miklas.k i30n is what I plan on next I’ve got a DS3 currently
But only best car for the money , I had 1 and thought it was slow but 🤷🏻♂️
@@ThePoisonDwarf1 such a good car for that money is what i‘m hearing. Same for me, currently i have a normal Clio, and my next car is either a MK7 GTI (maybe TCR) or the I30N
Love hearing Tony talk about his tracked GT3 !
ive becoming addicted to having these on while working, really nice.
25:57 oh Tony/Sam, I laughed and laughed at the pan roof on bmw m 😂😂😂
People value transparency .
Love the Audi S1, friend had one when they were new and it was a little rocket.
Will proudly fly the flag for the mentioned Kona N! Aren’t many performance hatches (yes it is a hatch and NOT an SUV, Hyundai marketing I’m talking to you) you can get with 5 year warranty and track warranty!
34:45 audi s1 is great! It was the car that gave me that same feeling you described earlier in the podcast.
That Clio RS pictured was never produced, it was based on the Clio IV RS but had the running gear from the Megane 275 Trophy-R. They made a few prototypes and got close to a super limited production but never quite happened.
Unfortunately, most of the Clio commentary was wide of the mark and under-researched. There was no 192 Clio, it was the 197 and then later 200 that they were referring to...the car pictured was the generation after those (the IV RS), but as you correctly state, the pictured car didn't happen. Also, I think you'd be hard pushed to find anyone who believes a IV RS is one of the best hot hatches of all time. The 200 Cup and 182 Trophy and Williams would've been worthy mentions, however. Maybe a video dedicated to these cars could be made as way of an apology.
Have to correct you on the X1 talk, X1 actually has more interior room than the X3 despite the smaller dimensions. I would encourage you to give it a try Sam. Surprised me too when I had it on test
Bought a MK3 Focus RS new in 2017, not the greatest driving machine in the world but cost of ownership has been and continues to be solid, probably cheaper to own than a ST looking at current prices.
Just as i open yt 💪 Yes!
Owned a V10 M5 great car had it for 2 years only thing that went wrong battery and wheel speed sensor
I have the limited edition ST200, love it!
LOL when Sam said BMW has led the way in interiors since 2002, I nearly fell off my couch. My old 2013 X5 had an interior fresh out of 2007.
Sam you were honest and its not a complete loss like how some of these recent Mclarens. Lets see how the Artura reliability reports are.
Just fyi the Ibiza cupra 1.4 engine was made of chocolate, loads melt pistons at standard power
The slightly newer 1.8tsi one is the one to have
I know a little old but the MK6 ST150, Brilliant value for money, sounds great with an exhaust and is still quick for 2023, also going up in value! I might be a little bias tho 🤭
I have one of those. A really good track car, especially for beginners.
@@Marcus-kw2ed I’ve only been on track twice with mine and it wasn’t a proper track day, I live near Goodwood motor circuit and mine breaks the noise limit 😂
@@Jakes_Cars I drive mine mostly at Mantorp Park (Sweden), and usually they’re quite chill there. Though mine has the “pumaspeed 190-kit” on it including milltek with sport-cat. They’ve never complained, although neighbours might find it a bit annoying :)
@@Marcus-kw2ed Awesome! I’ve been using mine as a daily for the last year and a half, I now have a proper daily so only drive it a couple of times a month now, love it even more ❤️
I think the relationship Sam has with Tony is like an older and younger brother relationship
Best thing about the new G generation 3 series is the back seat. Just that bit bigger and wider for three kids. Then turn it into an M3 and, Le bingo!
Mk3 focus rs as competitor to the Audi and Mercedes as mentioned? Any of the fiesta st ranges?
What is Tony's view on the BMW 4.4L V8 reliability ? As bad as they said, bag of bolts by 100k or same as anything else with good servicing
I love the little abarth I'm on my second
Mazda MX5, Abarth 124, and the third car could be: Toyota GR 86, old F-type (the "cheap" 4 cylinder), or (if FWD is allowed) the Mini Cooper S convertible?
Megane II Sport 225, best hot hatch for that (very little) money. 🔥
Was hoping it was coming Thursday 😅
Tony is right about the M140i's. Loads of them over the last 2 years with sub-50k miles, getting damaged pistons due to injector failure. If I had one, I'd for sure be changing the injectors for piece of mind.
He's not right about that, it's only happening in very rare cases.
Is there a downside to waiting for for one to be give in and then replacing all 6? Tbh the biggest problem with injectors at low mileage will be idiots using normal fuel rather than vpower or some other premium fuel.
@@xDAAAZEx Well I know of over 20 in the last month. That’s enough to make me think it’s an issue.
@@camdened123456 It’s impossible to really tell if/when they’ll go. So I’m not saying to worry about it or not, I’m just relaying what I’ve seen on the B58’s. If you suspect symptoms and let an injector fail, you’ll most likely get a cracked piston that’ll need replace and possible scoring on the cylinder wall.
@@1993j Ouch. Sounds like the rod bearings on the V10 M5 where it's a potential classic that is let down by an issue you can't fix for good :/. It won't nuke the engine the same way but a mini version of that
The Kia Proceed GT it's not the one displayed, for that money it's the previous generation that is a 3 door hatchback. And it looked miles better than the new sports wagen replacement.
Great little car to drive.
Yeah the Kona N 🤙🏻 love mine, brilliant car. Urus for poor people 😅
Recommend my i20N. £25k with 5 year warranty. And a wicked diff. All the extras standard just colour and Bose.
You should do a video on first cars for enthusiasts
serkemotorworks who do a lot of tuning on M140i's had a feature about them on instagram recently, saying that if you have an early M140i you should change the injectors for a later part otherwise you can suffer serious engine problems. Looks like Tony's seeing it too.
Totally agree with Tony. I’ve gone from M340iT to M3T and although twice the price to change, and I loved my M340iT, the M3T is next level and great feeling. Another great podcast guys.
The equivalent to "You're not a true petrolhead today unless you own a_______" is Aston Martin or Maserati, BUT is quickly becoming just any sports car that is still internal combustion.
Please make a video with a ND MX5, you and tony always big them up but I don’t think you’ve ever made a video with one?
EK9 Civic Type R, Mk 1 Focus RS, m140i
Hyundai N products pretty good. They N product Ev on the way also. Like see their Santa Cruz get a N line.
Great show guys. Tony interest rates are only high relative to zero. They are not high historically these rates are historically still only average at best I don’t see them being lower anytime soon.
as for the modern Alfa, McLaren and pre emira lotus. true Petrol head pain and pleasure
I think the problem is that there is an almost mythical perception, supported by media, that Porsche are significantly better than other marques. The reality of owning one (and I have had three) simply doesn't support that myth. I honestly have never spent as much time sitting in and visiting a dealership as I have with Porsche. Issues ranging from misaligned of trim and squeaky seats right through to total and utter failure of the car. At some point someone needs to expose this and stop playing along with it.
I'll selflessly drive your GT3 back from the South of France (via Italy, Slovenia and Germany). It's an inconvenience given that I live in Scotland but I'll do it for the cost of fuel - no charge for my time. Let me know if interested😁
46:37 wrong gen of A45 flashed up, Tony likes the new one
Like what’s Tony says, shit happens but at the end of the day you weren’t hope and things like cars can be fixed 👍
Didn’t Tony’s brakes melt on the rear of his Mercedes amg gt
Tony do you sell to folks in the us?
Tony. Such a sensible bloke. 1+1=2
My Question for Tony is What does the M3 Touring do better than a Audi RS4 Avant? Cause they do pretty much the same job. Is the M3 just a better overall package or is there something more. I'm asking just out of Curiosity of what makes someone pick the Touring over the Avant or Vice Versa.
The m3 is Probably better on the Sporty side (+ faster obviously)
M140i all day long!
If you want a brilliant hot hatch town car for your wife, look for an R56 John Cooper Works automatic (flappy paddles). They are prettier than the later model, they are smaller, so fit into tight parking spaces and they are rare, only made for one year so will hang onto their value. They are also great fun to throw about. Just ditch the run flats.
Check! Had an e46 M3 cabrio smg. Great car. But. Rattled like a sht box, always needed a few hundred quid spent on it. Didn’t let me down but similarly didn’t tickle my onions like I wanted. CV52 XTU if it’s still out there!
Still taxed and tested. 90k miles now!
45:59 do it mx5 tour !!
Hey Sam not that it has any bearing on or from this podcast but I wonder if DDE were a sponsor on a rally you were on would you as a fellow content creator take their name off of your car?
You missed out a generation of Clio RS', the Mk3 197/200
Give me the X3 and I’ll show you how to pack for a 2 week family of 5 holiday! As babies grow a lot of the initial paraphernalia is unnecessary.
Skylines are similar to the Alfa life of may years ago
The renault is a mk4 clio rs200 lads
Mini JCW is the best. 230hp and great handling
I've been toying with the idea of an r53 s, jcw or not, abarth 500 or supercharged cobalt ss.
@@brandonherrera2891 R53s are amazing just watch out for rust !
@miniandadventure I will do, thanks!! I live in Texas. So should be ok.
@miniandadventure I also have a 2002 xjr, which luckily, isn't rusty. They also like to rust.
Wb the punto abarth? Same thing?
Abarth punto is basically a mito 155
My current garage consists of a 2006 BMW M5 and a 2005 Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG so I suppose I'm a true petrol head!
Sam, did you mean MX5, 124 and GT86 by any chance?
It's not about if it goes wrong it's how it's how the manufacturer deal with with it it's at least inconvenience to you
RX7, kiwis have been struggling with these for decades.
Rebuild every 20,000k. Yeh, thats for the hardcore amongst us. :D
Aren’t Aston Martins all Mercedes engined?
Focus rs all the way
For the money its the best handling car
Interior is meh but for 25k its top 3 hot hatches
FK8 Type-R is far superior at everything except launching from zero mph.
Having owned a 147, 156 GTA, 2 facelifted 156's and a 159 can attest to the pain & pleasure sentiment, my partner is convinced I'm into sadism 🤣
Having owned an Alfa made as recently as 2015 I can confirm the pain is still very much present.
@@joeunderwood36932014 giulietta cloverleaf owner here, can also confirm 😂
I have a 2016 Veloce which is the facelifted cloverleaf. The inside door handle snapped off the other week and now I open the window to let myself out. It’s all part of the Alfa owning experience, still love it.
@@okami242 Underneath mine has corroded like a 20 year old car and the twin clutch gearbox is so bad I have to take a detour to work or it'll fail on the way - AGAIN. Also likes to show random warning lights when it feels like it and randomly beeps. Still also love mine
@@okami242 ahahah the door handle is a classic, have you had to replace the rear boot looms or the radio aerial yet?
Great Podcast. I challenge you to do an episode without using the word "fundamentally" ! 🤣
8 days ago - Lotus Australia says it has received about 50 pre-orders for the Eletre, with estimated pricing of $250,000 to $300,000 plus on-road costs
Really, used super car money for an electric car???
I own a 1980s honda accord. One of 12 still remaining of the marks 1s. No tax no mot cheapest insurance biggest smiles per miles seeing people figure out what it is they are seeing. You can only do the soeedlimit on the roads anyway so all these instant power insane bhp are just a waste. Throwing a 38 weber on her and will have more fun then a finance whip thats for sure
I think the “true petrol head” car now is any well used hot hatch when you’re the 5th registered owner 🤣
I have taken that into cosinsinconteration thank you
There isn’t scientific proof that floor-sleeping helps back pain. Yet, many people say it provides relief.
E90 330i is a great buy, just watch for injectors and water pump.
I’ve been looking for an E92 330i manual with the pre-facelift N52 engine which is less prone to injector failure as it’s port injection not direct injection. Very hard car to find as I think lots of people have woken up to how good these cars are for the money!
Clio RS Trophy 220?! What a car for 6-8 grand. If you can see past the average interior.
Clio 220 Trophy for going about town Sam? Relatively small and semi-auto.
I'm in a gr yaris cp bloody awesome car but I'll always miss my Renault megane rs 250 cup , had two st fiestas great fun but so nickable its just not funny 😢
Clio V6 wide body 😊
@50:35 those engines were terrible. Same applies for the polo and fabia at the time. A car to avoid if its not looked after
Sam, have you driven a BMW I3s? Recently came out of a Polestar into one and they’re ace, especially for London. Mines a hybrid though. Worth a look as I think they’re under appreciated and clever.
Ferrari had the issue with the 458. Bottom line is a car like that that PORSCHE themselves shout about reliability. And how they shout about on documentaries about the quality checks. This kind of falls flat. Bottom line is that a car with the GT brand and that price sadly should not have happened so early in ownership. I think the fact that Porsche have been on top of the situation from the word go. Unlike the other makes where they fall flat that’s the issue
Imagine picking one lucky viewer to drive back your car and fully document the experience, missed opportunity!
I wouldn't let someone else i dont know drive my supercar. Lol.
Focus RS as a hot hach ??????
Cars are still put together by humans for the most part, things need to get fastened, maybe the torque wrench used to tighter the rear half shaft wasn't working correctly or the person doing it that day was hung over from a party the night before. Hopefully nothing further happens, but agree it wasn't that big of a deal.
22:30, "when the interest rates come back down"
Tony wearing black socks is criminal
It's 'pathetic fallacy', Sam 😘
Petrolhead brand: Mclaren
Tony, rates aren’t coming down any time soon. Market is finally pricing in that central banks are holding tight to quash inflation and will use other levers to help a recession. Hey, it’s the future, no one knows but don’t expect any cuts until way into 2024 if not longer. This is the new norm. Like the good old days.
