The players casually setting off the trap is the most realistic thing i think in this movie
ok
This is like Guild Wars and Muinen Saga had a baby
That's a nat 1 perception check right there
They didn't even make an insight roll even though they had the rogue. 😄
@@TylerDickeyMusic wizards have low perceptions too, compared to the proficiency bonuses the other classes get.
I love the line, "I don't want to see you die....so I am going to leave the room."

Yes....
That's the most Hugh Grant thing Hugh Grant has said in a movie lately.
BBEG Talk for sure
Can we get a scene where something is obvious but they "roll a low perception" and they miss it completely
MUST
Honestly the part at 1:19 is pretty much like that
I mean, that's "I may have triggered the mechanism," right?
There is a scene that actually rolled a 20..... You will see it when you watch the film.
The barbarian constantly failing charisma checks was great. Not to mention how they react to the villains monolog is 1000% "barbarian player"
Just gonna break down this combat round:
0:10 - Barbarian: "Okay, chop it off!" - passes the DC for perception and sleight of hand checks on a loose brick and stealthily picks it up
0:14 - Guard A: rolls less than the Barbarian's AC and misses. Hits brick instead
- - - combat begins and everyone rolls initiative! - - -
0:15 - Surprise round begins! Barbarian rolls to attack and hits! Smashes brick on Guard A's foot and face.
0:16 - Extra Attack! Throws brick to Guard B who is on his way to help. Guard B rolls natural 20 on reflex save, ducks in time and brick smashes into Guard C right behind him.
0:18 - top of initiative! Bard uses turn to try and cut his bonds through the corner of a stone step. Fails dexterity check.
0:19 - Guard C's turn: rushes towards Barbarian and attacks. Misses!
Guard A and B use their turns begin to crawl away from the battle.
Barbarian's turn: succeeds in an athletics check to knock Guard C prone.
0:21 - top of initiative! Bard: fails dex check to break bonds on dull-edged stone step. Uses bonus action to inspire Babarian with "Oh we got em now!!!"
0:23 - Guard C approaches Barbarian cautiously, A and B still attempting to crawl away
Barbarian uses extra inspiration from Bard to throw herself on Guard C, grabbing his head, and knocking him prone. succeeds both athletics and acrobatics checks!
0:25 - top of initiative! Bard still failing to cut his bonds loose.
The filmmakers being able to translate the sort of hilarious absurdities that often come up in sessions, into film, is what I think will make this film a hit. At least with the D&D playing crowd haha.
True. But the percentage of the crowd paying to see the movie being part of the "D&D crowd" will be miniscule.
I saw a Mimic in there!
@@michaeldobson107 D&D is way more popular than you think bud. In the past few years, the #1 highest-earning channel on Twitch has been Critical Role, which is a show where you watch other people play D&D.

@@elayseabaker-wx8is A rather large portion of the viewers won't even know that this is based upon the D&D game (or even know what D&D is, or care.)
Most will simply view it as another Hollywood Fantasy film.
You see this a lot with films that are based on books/games.
Many of the viewers will not have read the books, or are familiar with the games, and only realize the film is based upon a novel or a game when the opening credits begin.
For example, Ryan Gosling in "The Notebook."
A lot of people went to see that because of Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, both very popular actors at the time.
Few moviegoers would have previously read the romance novel it was based on.
Same with Mel Gibson and "We Were Soldiers."
How many moviegoers read that book (written by an obscure, retired Army general) before the movie came out?
Cheers.
the barbarian kicking ass, while the bard tries to free themself is the most accurate thing I've seen, also.
Yes
even better when you can see the bard/thief can always escape from the binds as they could literally just slip their hands out and is just avoiding the fight.
Agreed.
Bard being useless is combat is such a fun meme.
@@malaficus Not Exactly, as he was spitting out inspiration the whole time!
But he didn't try to seduce the guard
I went in with low expectations. And came out super satisfied. This movie is a real big hit for me, not even a huge fan of the franchise or comedy but it got me choking to bits quite often. So far it's my movie of the year very surprisingly.
Same, i went only because my friends called me. Wasnt intetested at all. Today i went again alone to rewatch it. Great movie
I want to see the party arguing about how to unlock a door, trying all sorts of absurd things, only for someone to just come by and open it, allowing the party to realize it is unlocked. Because that is the truest of all D&D experiences.
And I would love to see some actual dice throwing, and skill checks
This movie has a massive "rolled multiple 1s" and the "chaotic uncooperative players" energy and I'm all in for it.
Some of the fights: Dungeons & Dragons: Avengers.

*DnD players:* (Vietnam Flashbacks)
Because there's frequently one player not paying attention or doesn't wait when the situation is being explained.
That...honestly, that looks like what every D&D game I've ever run and played in eventually turned into.
The only thing that could complete it is if the characters take it really seriously at first until they start to realize the outcome won’t change either way.
Crap?
Woe to the DM who wants to run a serious game
D&D is marketed as a serious high fantasy action/adventure game, but it is plays as a high fantasy comedy with elements of action and drama sprinkled on top.

I've never played a serious D&D campaign so this look exactly like what I would be playing. Just a fun silly action filled adventure
The story is in the Manual. If I played “Hungry Hungry Hippos” with my friends in a deathly serious way, is it right to assume that everyone else did the same and therefore the movie must be that way? Stop saying that making this thing “superdumb” was the “right thing” because that’s how you played D&D with your friends, I don’t believe you did, specially with those suspiciously $hort comments and the pronouns in your profiles that are used by people that hate nerd stuff. Just like any other board game, everyone has a different experience every single time you played it, even if you do it with the same group of friends. Movies are meant to be for the general audience that didn’t played them exactly like you did, and quite probably didn’t even played it at all. BUT there is one element that is totally objective and every single person that ever played the game experienced exactly the same way as everyone else, The MANUAL, The MANUAL which is not subjective as your defense is. Every detail about the characters and their world is in the manual and is written seriously, there is no goofy “comedy” in it all. What they are doing here is mocking the seriousness of the source material from their very subjective and narcissistic point of view. If they had followed the manual instead, or the books, or comics that were written afterwards, they could had filled the expectations of the biggest part of the audience. That’s why your statement is utter stupid. You still want things that don’e belong to you, to reflect you.

I can definitely see a good franchise built around D&D if it appears to be made with as much love and care as this film seems to be, albeit not with a grander mythology being built up like the MCU. Preferably the next installments would be standalone sequels taking place in different realms with a different cast of different characters. Maybe they all take place in the same world, the characters just don't intersect.

I still need some convincing, but I really hope this does just well enough (if not more so) to reignite an interest in fantasy on the big screen again. I think after the mid 2000s, quality dipped all the way into the early 2010s with Hollywood's YA obsession. Looks like Disney threw up all over this movie. You already know Chris Pine is gonna be a helpless little damsel in distress in this movie.
He's a bard so yes and no. He isn't pathetic but he's not a fighter either. The others are stronger than him because they are a barbarian, a sorcerer, and a druid. Which are all much more fighting oriented, while bards do the talking.
well this does capture the spirit of dungeons and dragons now does it. I'd love to watch this.
This looks so good!
OGL 1.0a should be irrevocable
Kind of sad this will most likely be boycotted because the D&D Community is still pissed off at the executives at WotC. So much wonderful work has been done on this!
Can't really blame them for doing that after how Hasbro/WoTC has treated people.
Truely unfortunate timing.
True all around. I can see the D&D movie be heavily played. Ironic since it's called 'Honor among thieves'
Nobody is going to boycott the movie.
@@D4l4m4r We shall see... but I'd be willing to bet that without a change a fair few people will boycott it.
Gonna watch this on paramount plus when it comes out.
Green flame blade, red Wizards of Thay and disruptor beasts oh my!!
The writers said they intentionally emasculated the men so thanks all my hype is dead now. But i appreciate their honesty.
I really wish one of my best friends could have lived to see this glorious day. RIP Shiva half elven. 😘✌
To Shiva! The Great Half Elven! 🍺
His name was Shiva The Half Elf...

You guys really that was nice 😊 thanks
We watched it this morning, great movie.
I may have never played myself, but the bit at 2:10 seems like something that actually happened in someone's campaign
Won't be the same without Jeremy Irons yelling about blood raining from the sky.
No one cares about *that* movie.
@@cameronmcewen9666 I only care about Jeremy Irons.
Looks great, it would be a shame if WoTC ruined the hype by say revising the OGL for the game during the marketing campaign. Oh wait….
Do we need a two second intro saying the trailer starts now? Why not just start the trailer?
having just seen the movie, i am SO GLAD i haven't seen this trailer. STOP SPOILING FUN STUFF IN THE MOVIE IN TRAILERS.
I did the same , I avoided all the trailer hahaha
Totally see your point, but I was just too excited I was watching all the trailers I could before the movie came out! It didn't ruin it for me, still had a blast seeing the film!
It’s cool we’re getting TWO guardians of the galaxy movies this year.
Agreed, but can we also agree that D&D was doing rag tag groups of comically mismatched adventurers saving the universe before it was cool to. So really "Guardians of the Galaxy" is just a space themed game of D&D.
I saw a long-form Tumblr post once where the entire Guardians of the Galaxy film was re-interpreted as the Avengers all playing DnD. It was actually pretty insightful, and very funny.
DM: "Roll for initiative"
Bard: "But my hands are bound...I can't cast spells"
DM: "I know...roll for initiative"
I bet it will get 500 million dollars at box office because it is good action movie.
Just left the theater…The Easter eggs throughout the film are awesome!
The only thing this is missing is one of the characters dying, and then being replaced by a new character, played by the same actor.
Now I want a sequel with this
It's so sad to see what an awesome year this could have been for D&D had WotC and Hasbro not decided to shoot themselves in the foot. OGL 1.0a must be irrevocable.
Yes.
Hasbro execs; _"Let's make another D&D Comedy movie."_
Clueless Boomer Shareholders; _"We'll Green light it, because the Last one w/ Marlon Wayans worked out so well."_
Yup. Its pretty sad because I've been a fan of WoTC, and I'm not giving them any more money. I'll definitely still watch this IF it's free, but for now ima forget about it.
Its been released. It is irrevocable AND they made the entire SRD 5.1 Creative Commons with attribution. It's better than before this whole thing - except for burning our trust.
@@scottzielinski9942 it's gonna take a while before we earn their trust, the movie could be a good start, but until then at least we got Legend of Vox Machina Season 2

Not only did this movie remind me of all the campaigns with my friends in my friends garage and the stupid things we use to do like have magic scrolls of lines of fairy dust u snort to merge with a interdimensional battle fairy of doom this movie made me cry at the end it was like i was in the campaign with them
I sure wish I still wanted to see this and Wizards hadn't killed all my love. :(
How?
@@cameronmcewen9666 the OGL drama
@@stevenwatcher2107 The what drama?
@@cameronmcewen9666 Oh sorry I thought you said it wasn't your problem?
@@stevenwatcher2107 What is the deal with this drama and how does it affect me?
Most DnD campaigns are just silliness and tons of fun like Vox Machina. This movie gives off that energy. Can't wait.
Matt, Laura, Ashley, Marisha, Liam, Taliesin, Sam and Travis need to cameo.
Fantasy movies are my fav genre. I hope this movie succeeds

Best line ever “who needs hero’s when you have thieves”
Yep, that comes from Hollywood's love affair with lawlessness and disorder.
WotC slogan should be "No honor among thieves".
This looks like a medieval guardians of the galaxy and I love it. I also thought that was Black Widow at 1:53
Guardians of the Galaxy was Dungeons & Dragons in space hehe
Legend of Vox Machina gives that vibe
