Only Dream Theater fans would complain about having Mike Mangini in their favorite band.
+Ian Lovdahl No one hates Dream Theater more, than their own fans.
TheCiscoKid2112 the level of contradiction is asian
Only Mike Mangini fans would complain about having Dream Theater in their favourite band.
You have to understand that Mike Portnoy was a key member of the band. He did all the PR, he was the most visible face, let alone his contributions. It’s not easy to lose him. Open your mind and stop judging us.
not complaining (he's a fantastic drummer) but his style is so different from portnoy's . And that's what make him a good replacement!
Man Labrie sounds good on this one!!!
Are you serious? He sounds as crap as always. He is a liablilty to the otherwise near perfect band.
No, I`m not gay. I suggest you find another platform if you would like to meet gays.
Must be post production. When I saw them last year, he could not hit a note
@@matthiaskopp9305 this was in 2012, after 2014 he sounds pretty bad.. you can se other performances from 2012 filmed by fans
Dream Theater needs to do more Awake with James sounding the way he does now. He fits right back in that style nowadays!
this tour theyre doing has a lot of awake in the set list
Yup. Saw them in Oslo, and sure enough, alot of Awake! They also did some Metropolis part 2, which was awesome.
dat bassline 0:57
....and wtf with this video's decription
Probably the list of the most searched words to get this video more views
Really Tasty!!!
I have to say, Mangini outdid himself on this one... my god those drums were clean, tight, and awesome
WTF is wrong with this comments section, this performance is stellar.
I don’t care if Portnoy or Mangini is playing Drums. They’re both great
It´s way strange that the members that werent in Awake introduced the song lol
I wonder if Kevin would accept playing with DT again, not sure what their attitude towards eachother is, some ex band members have real spite towards their previous bands.
kevin is never coming back. he actually wrote this song about his frustration with the band, and ever since he left he hasnt kept up with them or anything. someone was writing a book about dream theater and asked kevin for an interview and he said he wasnt interested in a book about dt... sad shit man they wrote their best songs with kevin in the band
And he also wasn't even here during "when dream and day unite" 15th anniversary concert, while Derek Sherinian and even Charlie Dominici came. Kevin Moore doesn't wan't to be a part of DT anymore because it's not good and fancy enough for him? that's fine, he is not even that great of a keyboardist compare to the two others tbh, his "80's soap opera" parts in images and words were cringy as fuck (but he was good in awake i agree).
I think every DT member from the awake era had something to add to their songs. But then the songs would repeat themselves after years and years. I think Kevin Moore is genius but since he didn´t really get along with MP, and KM style isn´t versatile since he would rather go solo and he is used to that.
But as Derek Sherinian, in lines in the sand and hell´s kitchen, we can more or less see DS ability to play background music for other instruments, in the same way KM did. But now we also can see DS full solos (figaro´s whore - sons of apollo). The ability to go into full background and foreground modes is something KM did very well, but just because he was more used to go foreground mode without asking too much. DS has the lead here.
So yeah, it´s always good to swap band members to craft different music. And of course if band members can get well along themselves, then it´s the way to go.
i dont know why many guys can hate Mike Manngini.. he s excellent .
it's always a personal preference; mangini is a sick player, for sure. but, in my opinion, mike portnoy always put the groove ahead of being technical. they are two completely different drummers, for sure, and they are both fantastic. but i think mike portnoy's drumming was always more groovy than mangini's has been for the band. this is simply my observation/opinion, so please don't take it as law. but if you want to hear what i mean, just listen to early dream theater like this, vs their self-titled album and the astonishing, etc.
Manginni or Metronome? Same same!
He is the best drummer they have had! hard care fans of this band may not think so but in the real world the guy is one of the overall best drummers ever.
The dude is insane! he has played drums since age of 3!
he is good but no soul
@Kim Jong- yeah bro mike portnoy gave his blessing to this group. Fanboy trolls is what it is.
4:29 "Hey do you think maybe we should use the footage of the greatest singer ever hitting a G#5?"
....
"Naahh"
How could something so silly and simple be the one flaw in an otherwise PERFECT performance and video???
3:37 Petrucci face's like ''Oh Labrie.. Again?''
6:00 on a Chistmas morning
What in the world with this video’s description lol
4:35 -- Mangini throws a flam in with his feet on Portnoy's original part.
Sick.
xD
ThePoorBoy The average Portnoy fan probably doesn't even know what you're talking about...
:)
NOOO NOT A FLAM?!? Lol what a joke
Most of heavy metal singers are getting better when they age, including James LaBrie. He's sick
You're joking right?
Go home you drunk
what the heck is this description XD
Am I the only one who has Awake as his favourite Dream Theater Album?
I know everyone is like discussing about the majesty and complexity of Images, Metropolis Pt. 2 and A Dramatic Turn of Events, but I think they never even remotely touched the special atmosphere of Awake again....Incredible Album especially the second half (The Mirror is btw one of their most underrated songs, easy Top 10 as well as Scarred, Space Dye Vest and 6:00)
Just noticed wth? 😂
Awake is my favourite album as well
Edit: wth is this description x 2
Kudos to Mangini on this one - freakin nailed it!
This bass line is so sick...
0:50 bruuuuuuuuuuutal! ese myung!
James sounds great here.. Like the old days
look the setup, each double strokes that are originally played by the right hand by Portnoy, are played with the left hand by Mangini, try this for yourselves, i can play the song using my right hand on the hi/hat, but playing it like this (left hand/never crossing both your hands) is a pain in the ass if you don't practice with your left hand (like me), so obviously it sounds less catchy cause it's like 10tx harder to play correctly (unless you are ambidextrous) if mangini played it with his right hand it would sound 100% the same as the cd, and here his tempo and his accuracy is already flawless ! (lack a bit of "punch", maybe due to the mix of the drumkit tho)
who fucking cares? it's MUSIC not sports. Portnoy sounded very organic, Mangini sounds more like "trying", rather than fitting the band.
Oh man I'm so glad I'm ambidexterous. I think Mangini is too.
But why do it if you can't do it properly?
Best song from early period
Lol true
James is on fire!
the bass lines are so sick! really love it
That scream on 4:29
So Fucking bad ass.
happy birthday jonh petrucci
I love Mangini, and his pure technical ability far surpasses Portnoy on even his worst day, but the groove is just not there in this recording(i hope its only this recording). Portnoy had such a unique approach to playing this groove so its is very hard to replicate, and though the notes are correct, it just doesn't "feel" right.
There’s a groove to what Mangini is doing... it’s just waaay looser. He’s laying back where Portnoy’s is more urgent and in front.
Shut up, stop this war... Don't compare This mike and that mike anymore, "it just doesn't feel right." Just adapt to what Mike Mangini does
yeah I think MM honours MP because he plays his parts, but extend his own notes in between
thank you ! it just doesn't groove at all, i don't hate Mangini but 6.00 is not for him
The groove hasn't been there since he started played with DT. Why? Because he has no groove. Super skills and all the acrobatics someone can imagine, but no groove.
the guitar here is better than on the album They, at the time, were trying emulate the "Pantera sound" which was a hot trend. But nobody could perfect the crystal clear crunch like the Dime.
This is a great live performance! I think Labrie's performance is especially great during the quieter section in the middle...and in the epic conclusion! Such amazing range. I just wish they turned the volume up on the damn keyboards!!! :D
Agreed... Just like the studio version, the keyboard is too low in the mix... Lol
He has his bad days, he has his awesome days - this was one of his awesome ones
4:29
Welcome on Board, Mike Mangini !!
I don't like screaming in music but for some reason james is so damn amazing at it that I love it. Especially on nightmare to remember on the new London dvd.
I would love more Awake. Its my favorite album by them.
Fake, myung used a speed hack at 0:49 auhauhauhau
I thought it was crazy how fast he was going
It was the editor of this video. Not Myung himself.
ONE of the best perfect piece of modern music ever made!
Honestly think that Mangini botched it toward the beginning, but he ended up tearing it up the rest of the way through the song.
I'm still so used to MP playing this stuff and pushing the time a bit. MM sits a bit behind the beat. Totally different feel.
Love the songs that MM has done since joining DT though. MP couldn't actually play a lot of MM's stuff!
very cool description
Phenomenal version of this song! Love it! Also this DVD is amazing. :D
Awake is my favourite dream theater album this is a good performance.
0:49 wtf how....
Gotta love the description :)
My FAvorite song From Early Dream Theater...
6.00 ...
fantastic DT and Mangini
0:50 holy fuck, what's going on there??
By far the most epic prog metal album of all time.
Funny that the first 2 band members we hear weren't from the original recording
yes and it sounds shit compared to the original sounds
I miss MP so bad
Comments about missing MP should be considered SPAM.
LaBrie and Manging at their prime
Such a tight band! :)
이 라이브 진짜 레전드다....ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ
6:00 on a Christmas Morning in Cali!
Those crazy keyboard riff man holy shit this band is just something else
Mangini plays it so much better and smoother. He's just on a different level than Portnoy.
Man LaBrie sounds so close to the original on this one!
One of the best of made in USA ❤ Dream Theater❤
I love Mike Portnoy's playing, but anyone who says Mike Mangini has no feel is ridiculous. Those hi-hat flourishes in the bridge were brilliant.
Facts
Both have a unique style. I prefer Mike, but who gives?
My alarm clock was set for 6:00 on a Christmas morning, heading to visit family for holidays. Oh yeah 👍!
Best intro ever
Perfect tempo
labrie's voice is okay here
That was fucking tight.
that description XDXD
LaBrie❤
JM at the final 😳
Mangini nails everything!
John Myung's fingers. Damn.
That octoban sounds glassy
lot's of freakin bedroom musicians commenting here 😄😄😄
bad ass boys
I prefer the Mike Portnoy Version of the Intro! hahaha But MM did this cleanly
Fucking yes!
This is probably where Portnoy's departure becomes evident.
3:13 sick
I actually love Mangini's sound just a little better than Portnoy. I know people say the production is shit and he doesn't have enough power but in a way, I think that makes it even more unique. It almost sounds kind of atmospheric, and jazzy if that makes since. And imo, (skill wise, not writing wise), mangini is a little better than Portnoy but Portnoy is still a badass.
Will Horton Please shut up. Thanks!
Lol
I agree
Will Horton Yours is a very respectable opinion; I'm not completely sure, however, about skills. I think Portnoy is, maybe, still superior to Mangini, but it's undeniable that Mangini is way much faster than Portnoy. On the other hand, I don't think Portnoy will ever achieve Mangini's speed, but I think it's only matter of time for Mangini to develop Portnoy's skills.
+Will Horton No doubt Mangini is a beast. He can play every Portnoy's song and more. But Portnoy always drove me a kind of empaty feeling when seeing him live. I saw Dream Theater with Portnoy 3 times in Argentina (2005, 2008, 2010) and once with Mangini (2012). The last 2014 tour i didnt get the ticket, because the band as a whole bored me. Its like seeing Alice in Chains without Layne Staley.
Hate to admit it, but Mangini is blending in pretty good by now... well done him.
Oh, and that Korean fuck is a fucking beast on the bass...
Petrucci è il mio Dio ok, Myung è inarrivabile, Rudess e Mangini alieni...... ma LaBrie che canta 6:00.... beh, emozione since 1994! ♥️ La voce più bella della storia del Prog!
0:55 style geddy lee
WTF is this description man?? LMFAO
Labrie sounds dope as fuck, what's gotten into him? (love his recorder performances, but we all know what he sounds like live)
Lamda Lamda Lamda and Omega Moos
I think this song is epoch-making.
Please post all CD sales by this band since AWAKE... Any gold? platinum? 👀
MM put his own flavour in here as he did over the most of MP drum-parts,but i dont think it fits, the intro groove is so tight n funk....and by far 6 00 is one of the best drum-intros ever!
Mangini is so great (and a nice guy), but Portnoy has something more (a singular inspiration to play)!!! I think that the whole world perceived that already! All the Good for both of them, but comeback to DT dear MP!!
Rudess & Mangini make this song sound like some soundtrack from a fucking movie about dancing robots.
exactly. i'd prefer portnoy and moore anyfukin' day
Petrucci sounded better when playing Ibanez
and used more analog and less digital equipment
Why do they always keep the bass so low on Volume :( The live version in Japan from the 90s
has better mixing
Hi-hat haven't enough presence, but this is probably a mixing problem! It's also true -I think- that MM philosophy (heavier sticks & lighter touch) produces a sound with less power and energy that's more difficult to manage by the mixer guy, and gives less energy to the audience. Having said that, the impression of catchier drumming of MP during live sessions is also dued by the fact that he almost constantly played the songs quicker than the original versions. MM has an inside-metronome far more stable. I admire both drummers equally.
I agree with you. I always say that the only thing i miss from Portnoy in Dream Theater is the sound. I really think that TAMA Drums sounds better and sometimes the snare or toms just choke with heavy sticks.
Sounds at least 25 bpm slower
Dunno, but MP made the drum intro sound catchier though MM probably has 'cleaner' technique?
Dunno, maybe because this is live?
EuriLochus Dunno, but no actually, live also catchier: /watch?v=vMwfMudNxEk
Mike's got a real sense of melody in that way. His drum parts sometimes feel like they could stand as working melodies on their own
Jordan looks like Enoch from Marvels Agents of Shield
Wtf is that description ahahahah
this bass line, sounds easy but hard to play.
Sik Asyik
Mangini = Metronome
0.00
Wtf is the description though
