when did he say this ?
Fabian Winters in an interview - just search for John Myung Interviews and you’ll find it - I don’t remember which one but it was pretty easy to find

LaBrie's face when he looks over and sees Mangini doing things with one hand most drummers struggle to do with two= priceless.
This group had 2 world class amazing drummers and on every fucking video people are arguing or shitting on one or the other. CZcams comments section must be the sewers of the internet.
Other than the incredible musicianship, these real musicians has another thing that all the haters lack, respect to each others music and talent.
youdaman!
Victor No i saw a lot of basement level drummer bitching about portnoy and mangini
Victor No you're right, but playing in a band relies on more than technical abilities. it's like being the right man in the right spot. that's what people are arguing about.
It is kind of like DLR vs. Sammy Hagar. Both realms were great IMO. Same with DT portnoy/manginni
Victor No Portnoy and Mangini can't be compared with each other. They are both exceptional drummers and both of them are fascinating their fans in their own distinctive and unique way.

@exposed love a joke, it's a joke
how is it even remotely possible that people come to this video and seriously complain about their musicianship/performance/even internal structure?!
complaining just for the sake of complaining and/or flaming...
like.... what the hell... just... sit back and enjoy the performance,..
in my humble opinion this is one of their best interpretations of metropolis to date.
so....
I use this platform to thank Kevin Moore for being such a creative and genius force in Dream Theater back in those days they wrote this song. Kevin, we love you!
its scary how they always play studio quality in live shows
+Kedar Awachat They are very very very very committed to that. They practice alot for reaching this perfection, but even being demigods, sometimes some minor and almost unnoticeable errors show up, regardless, DT is still my favorite band.
that my friend is because they use playback, there are a lot of videos where Myung stop playing and the playback keep going or even when mike portnoy was in the band, he uses playback too
Its not playback but i saw a video where they explained that. I mean when they mix a live concert video they remove the errors and fill in the studio the parts that are not correct. You can check in any fan live video and you will notice some errors. But if you check a video released by the band, no mistakes can be seen or heard. Theres nothing wrong with that. Its the band desire to give a good product.
Yes, Lorenzo is really right, in all shows that I've gone, I noticed some mistakes and there wasn't fills and Band-Aids in the sound.
+Lorenzo Rodriguez is that so.. well thanks!
5:32 Mangini nailed it!! God he's frickin' good!!
nailed what?
@@RobbieGarciakawasakininja650r - The jam section.
4:02 Petrucci was surprised by Labrie's great live vocals
Mangini is absolutely amazing
I only discovered Dream Theater less than a year ago, but there's something that feels so nostalgic about these songs from Images and Words. ❤️
Oh boy ! you missed a lot of things ahaha i listen them since i'm 15 years old and i'm 33 now saw them several times and always differents things, sounds, jam sesssions, improvisation in any live they're making... i've been a lot of live and its the only band who used to be different in every concert (I remember the time when it was usual to them to be in live for more than 3 hours) which band can be in live 3 hours actually?
the drum set looks like it was build for an octopus
It actually was... Mangini is an octopus
You clearly haven't seen Portnoy's.
mangini is beast but portnoy is dream theater ;)
Mangini is ambidextrous. That's why his kit is symmetrical
Not only that, he wants to follow the notes/tones with the kit, the left side is tuned higher, and the right side well, of couse, tuned lower. .3
This is so bloody good. I love Mangini's energy here! Smiles all around from the band!
Code Khalil totally agree. He is a brings a new energy to the band.
There is no energy in this video if i have to be honest....
Omg James sings in this one like in old times, really great performance of his, looking forward for 30th anniversary
Ah, I love this.
Jordan and Mike looked like they were having a lot of fun playing
LaBrie has been sounding AMAZING lately. He sounds better than he has in over a decade, and it's just getting better.
Kevin Armstrong I agree. Since MP's departure, James is getting better and better!
Carlos Alberto R.N da Costa whats that got to do with his left?
Burak Mete My theory is that Portnoy is primarily responsible for the way the band sounds since the turn of the century (I mean that heavy metal stuff that the band adopted from the Train of Thought). And since LaBrie´s poisoning his voice was no longer to sing metal as he did in Awake for example. That is LaBrie forced to sing in a way that harmed his voice even more. And after MP's left (in ADTOE, the self-titled album and in live performances) James sings different than the previous albuns. This is what I think...
Carlos Alberto R.N da Costa I'm singer for quite a long time and I had the same theory! :)
Martin Jelínek Really? Wow it's amazing to find someone who has the same theory!!!
James absolutely fucking killed it . Amazing performance
Incredibile👍

I've known these gentlemen since the "Majesty" days w/ Charlie Dominici, and can honestly say they are not only the best musicians on the planet; but incredible people as well. We played with them in the early days (89-90) during the "transition" and they were a "music machine" Thanks JP, for all the great memories
Jordan is such an underated musician, he is incredible. The stuff he plays is so hard and complex and he does it with ease and never screws up... Ever!!!! I guess maybe going to Juliard really payed off!
Yes he screws but there are so few notes that pass unnoticed, also John screws every solo but it's chromatic passing notes, also fully acceptable in a live performance!
And its imposible to find his replacement
06:45 "i love this job"
6:48*
by the way...james is bloody AMAZING here...he can't hit the notes with as much force as he did before the food poisoning incident but at 50 something, he probably wouldn't be able to anyway...for his age, the amount of touring they do and the range he consistently stays in, you couldn't ask for much better really...killer stuff, james...
I don't care if it's Mangini or Portnoy. Dream theater is a band, not a person. And they sound amazing as always.
Portnoy named the band, came up with most of the artistic direction, created almost all of the fan interactions (behind the scenes videos etc.), he was the heart beat of the band, he was more of a band leader live than labrie and most of all he new when it had become stale. I disagree.
@@ericdappen5893 I agree with all of that, but still, he was 20% of the band. If they all had a disagreement, then everything Is 'legal'.
I miss him a lot, specially on 2019 when they played the whole SFaM live. I needed to see him there playing.
@@ericdappen5893 so they should have disbanded when portnoy decided to leave?
Man i LOVE Jordan´s Piano/Steeldrum keyboard improv at the end.

When you play sober this is the outcome. Just pure talent and studio quality gig, highly technical DT is always joy to watch. And yet here I am watching this in 2020.
That must be one of the all time greatest performances of that song. Top 5
Labrie really blows me away with this performance. I am so happy
5:10 PURE EMOTION
This vocalist sounds the same as he did years ago, incredible
What the hell is bad about Labrie? I freaking love the dudes voice it fits so well with the band. And at least he never lip syncs like other singers mostly do.
There are times where you can hear this is clearly post-processed, but this performance is an amazing one for him. Normally he has massive problems annunciating and actually hitting the notes in general.
@@Cobalt985 what are you smoking? Ive heard him live their last 3 tours and he was great all three tours
@@danmulcahy6044 czcams.com/video/1aYPyx5FgGs/video.html
love DT but with no singer they would be better, i despise the vocals, but i tolerate.
@@Cobalt985 I hear tons of human pitch errors in this. Especially in the "As a child, I thought I could
live without pain..." verse. He's really reaching for that high D note there and you can hear it. I don't think the vocals are post-processed or overdubbed. I've seen them live and his vocals were about on par with what they are here. It's also possible, of course, that he tried to sing a bit better for this performance because he knew it would be taped.
Wow. Labrie actually nailed this one really cleanly
This DVD should be called "Dream Theater and the ever changing cameras - Live at Luna Park". They change cameras every 10 seconds or less...
+appbaptista In think the real problem is that the cameras are moving all the time so that makes you kind of dizzy....not very pleasent dvd to watch.
+Diegosaurio agreed!
Yes, they asked Steve Harris to edit the video!
There is a Rush live dvd I have (working men) and they literally don't keep one shot up for more than a second (I think on the YYZ performance). Good music, but dizzying.
probably so people can't learn how to play the whole song from watching the dvd
Labrie sound really good in this
I agree :3
Yes he really does and even though many usually criticize his performance I am willing to bet people would start the "DT lost their soul" talk if LaBrie was for example replaced by a better metal singer like Mark Boals...
I wouldn't say perfect, but yeah Labrie was way better than his usual terrible parrot-voice performances
***** people have to complain. they'd go crazy if they didn't. they complain about black clouds sounding stale and mike's drumming pushing the band away from prog but let mike mangini come in and suddenly DT lost all their soul and prog elements
I hate the direction that DT is going in right now. They need to take a good listen to Images and Words. But at least they are making a Metropolis part 2
Sound of life!
Such a poor life.

I wish Myung's bass sound was as present as Geddy's
+sleepwalker2112 I think that would be slightly overpowering, given that the bands a 5-piece and rush 3 where there is more room in the mix for a big bass tone. Not to mention dream theater plays a lot more bussy and heavy stuff. There was a time where he was actually audible and had awesome tone though, like scenes in new york. He should definitely be louder however.
Yeah I agree. I dislike his actual almost inaudible tone, the band sounded much better back then,
I think he actually demonstrates himself very well in the 2013 DT album.
sleepwalker2112 agreed that's why I love rush so much
One of the many reasons I love rush
Listen everyone, if the drum-kit here on this live had the same sound production than the one Portnoy had on all the DT live he has been doing (Portnoy always had a look over the sound of his drumkit when they were making a Live tape/dvd) , no one would be saying "this drummer is dead/flat etc ...", compare this video with an older live with portnoy, you will notice the snare and kick are always compressed, the snare drum is always tighten at max, and the drums are always louder than anything else !
Nowaday to clarify things, the only one who has an eye upon the whole mixing process is John Petrucci ! so Guitars : LOUDER everything else : quieter, that's why the drums are so dead here, cause everything was turned down, you can't even hear the damn kick drum, the sound has no depth, no resonnance, there is almost no EQ on the snare drum, all the toms are flat, due to the mixing, and the drum kit has nothing to do with that, i heard a Pearl reference before and these kits are freaking loud, tight with a lot of resonnance !
I am curious about this topic ... is Petrucci that selfish?
Mangini always used to play really tight heads. Sometimes we can tighten them too much which can choke out the sound. I not sure, but that's what the sound reminds me of.
I'm not hearing the initial strike of the stick hitting the head.
Everything after this was better, possibly due to using a two ply head rather than the single layer he uses here. The two ply Remo Emperor helps articulation.
I was expecting Mike to play Remo Pinstripes because all his pics around the entry to the band showed pins on the kit. I thought that he may have recorded with the pins on ADOTE, but have no way of knowing.
That Mangini dude has some excellent skills on the feet (good sounding kit as well!)...
Muy buen trabajo el de Petrucci, machaques, armónicos y velocidad muy claros, luce más que en otros temas
I love how Jordan is just having fun playing like a child with a wizard hat
Okey, just listen folks. What are you all complaining about really? First of all, remember that they're not like 20 years old anymore. Their age is spread from John Petrucci that is 46 (almost 47), to Jordan Rudess that is 57 years old. It's not bad at all that they keep playing at this level. You can't really complain about James LaBrie's voice either. He's 51 years old, and sings really amazing here. Remember that he struggled a LONG TIME with his voice after the food poisoning in '94. And what you really should think about, is that they have played together in this band for ALMOST 30 YEARS now.
It's Mike Portnoy's own fault that he's not playing in the band anymore. Mike Manghini is doing a GREAT job here. Remember that his first album was meant for him to be like a "warm up" for him, so he could get to know the band better, to get the feeling of how it is to play with the band and to tour with them. John Petrucci wrote the drumnotes for his first album, and Mangini's job was to record what was written on these notes (with a certain level of improvisation). This album on the other hand, is more serious. Now he's a fulltime bandmember. But you should all keep in mind that he's their newest member, and that it's the first album he's deciding everything himself. Give him some more time to play with the band, because I'm certain that it's from now that you will know the reason why he became the new drummer. It's from now on that he finds himself upon all this and finds his way to go in the band. He's a REALLY good drummer, that is playing different from all other drummers. He has a certain way to do things that no one else have.
And a last thing. Remember that the band have gone through A LOT of changes since Mike Portnoy left the band. Portnoy was in a way the foundation of the band, and when he left, they had to reorganize the whole band. They need to try out new things, and find out what they like - and of course what you, the audience, like. It's not easy for them to keep the balance right between them and the audience.
Instead of just complain about what you don't like, show your support to them. Of course you can tell them what you don't like, but also tell them what you DO like. Then it's way easier for them to find out what direction they want to go further, and they get to know their fans better too.
And from what I understand graduates of Berkley School of Music, so the music theory and all that goes along with being musically educated goes a ton of a long way!
Yeah, whatever. Mike Mangini's sound sucks compared to Mikey's.
@@FabioAneto if you haven't, go see them live. You will change your mind.
@@jimh8030 Both Johns and MP dropped out of Berklee after a year, so nobody graduated from them. Only Jordan (Julliard) is a music graduate. Mangini finished a degree in computer science.
Finally, you are absolutely right.
Stop regretting about the portnoy's absent from the band. Its clear that Portnoy has so much skill, knowledge, feeling, but as a fan, you guys have to looking forward. The sound is still majestic with another colour, so Mangini is doing excellent and you should thanks him as i do for his job.

I really love Portnoy on the drums and it's been hard for me to get used to Mangini, but he sounds really good here. I still think he doesn't have nearly as much feel as Portnoy as of now (probably due to how new he is compared to how long they were playing with Portnoy) but I think that's definitely changing.
