    So I just reposted my results up here,, where it is more visible. I was as skeptical as any,, about removing the upper tuned intake stacks. I only have one test day on it,,, but no downsides discovered yet.
    Okay,,, so in the past couple of days,,, I got the above done. First removing the upper curved velocity stacks. Leaving the lower short straight stacks in place c/w fastener safety rings, as they basically hold the airbox to throttle bodies. Also,,, I did throw in that freshly oiled K&N filter. And much to my pleasant surprise,,, I got a decent increase in useable torque. Very impressed,,, I then removed the x-long baffles from the 18" Del's. Sure it's louder now,,, but more air/fuel in and more combusted mixture out = even better results. This is just basic hot-rodding. The Bazzaz air/fuel map that I am using (13.2/1 roughly),,, is just rich enough for good power, and minimal afterburn. So far,, fuel mileage does not appear to be negatively affected,, despite me having a whole lot of fun. But tomorrow, I will tank up and do a proper mileage check at normal speeds. Standby for more good news !!

      @@RodRidesWrenches So I was able to do a short 109km fuel consumption test,,, which was combined city/highway at about 10-15km over posted,,, so fairly tame. It was over known and frequently traveled routes,, during medium winds,, and not much in the way of performance driving. Good news,, is that there was an improvement in fuel consumption, as measured and calculated with pump volume and gps distancing. Average consumption was up about 1.5km/L. But I need to do a longer ride,,, mostly highway,,, of about 200km minimum to verify this. Should get a chance at weeks end,,, and I promise,, no hyper-mile-ing !!

    • @Porsche359
      @Porsche359 Před rokem +2

      So first of all,,, sorry for the delay. And also sorry that I only have combined city/highway results available yet. But,, I have done those twice,, because I couldn't quite believe the good results. And please remember,, that these results are from a Bazzaz modified F/I setup,,, that is no longer available. Anyway,,, the 3 elements modified, exhaust baffles out, F/I mod's, and upper velocity stacks removed (okay,,, maybe the K&N too). Mileage was calculated using pump volumes,, and gps distance measurements. Fuel was 91 octane. Speeds were posted limits, to +15kph posted. Maximum shift points 4500rpm. So conservative speeds, but not horribly slow. No large hilly terrain,,, and moderate side winds only. So before the upper stacks and baffles were removed,,, this fuel map produced between 16-18km/L. After the upper stacks and baffles were out,, and the K&N added,,, the consumption improved to about 20-22km/L, when driven at the same performance level. Not bad at all,,, especially considering there is more torque on tap now, should I choose to use it (and I do,,, frequently, lol) !! I hope to do a highway only check before the weekend. Cheers,, Alan

    After owning two ST1300s I found the best thing to do for seals and brakes was to take the bike to Honda and have all the fluids replaced every other year. That was around 25-30k miles. It really renews how well the fork and brakes work, ensures your radiator and clutch fluid are in good kit.

    Since you asked, and yes I'm a bit late, I hate loud exhausts. I have a Delkevic full system on my ST1100 and I'm not that happy with the sound. Of course bafflers are still in. I much prefered the stock exhaust sound. Alas it was rusted out and finding a good second hand replacement is almost as expensive as the full Delkevic system. Which by itself is a good system, indeed good value for money. My 4th gen VFR (RC36) still has the stock exhaust and I much prefer this. Depends also on the engine type, at least for me. I also have a R1100 RS with stock system. It is relatively loud yet the sound of this boxer twin I find very pleasing. It is a very personal matter of taste. Although I do see your valid point about safety.

      What is never mentioned is that after-market mufflers need to be serviced every 8-10k miles. They basically consist of a perforated pipe wrapped in fiberglass. That's why they're so much lighter than stock mufflers.
      However, that fiberglass burns up after about 8-12k miles and needs to be re-newed. Otherwise there will be a lack of back pressure and it will also sound much louder and worse.
      The stock muffler is built to never have to be serviced and has steel chambers for the back pressure and sound reduction, hence the high weight.

      @@sv650nyc7 While I have baffled 18" Del's on my '04. I have also run a '12 with stock pipes. Two main reasons are,,, it (the '12) has lower emissions and gets great/better mileage. It is also pleasantly quiet. It has performance equal to the '04,,, while doing other things even better. So it does not much sense to spend a lot of money on performance mod's for the '12. Question though,,, where do you find the re-packing recommendations for aftermarket mufflers, like the Del's ?? thx,,,

    Hello, interesting to see series of videos of a service/setup of a bike. Thanks for uploading!.
    About the block-off plates, or removal of the air valve, I did it in my Yamaha MT09. It's not done because of performance gains, but to remove something that adds some complexity, with no gains and some obnoxiousness as well is added. Without the catalytic converter, the injected air mixed with the unburnt fuel, generates a lot more of explosions outside the exhaust when releasing the throttle. I just blocked the system to avoid that air generating more explosions than it should and having higher temperature in the exhaust.

    I purchased a low mile used ST1300 2007. I had a bit of popping. Any time I purchase a used motorcycle I remove all the plastic and give it a good look over to see the disaster of mods the previous owner may have done. To my shock all stock but pipes were Delkevic also. After a good look at the exhaust front to back the pipes were installed very poorly. You could see the dark exhaust leaks where the mufflers joined the pipes.
    Took them off cleaned and used high temp gasket maker at the joints. And bam no popping at all.
    I tried the pair valve mod and lost the high idle as it reached temp. Once warm idle it stays at 900 rpm. Going to see if this causes any stalling in the next few day.
    Since I had no popping after my exhaust re-install I may put the pair valve either back to stock or instead of blocking it just reduce the air to allow some through. When I had several Victory bikes I used an item called an idle air valve. you would limit the air by an between valve to 1000rpm to the start up idle. Once warmed up you could still achieve normal idle.
    The purpose of the IAV was to reduce popping for Victory bikes.

    I have a'94 ST 1100 and its getting a little worn out. I looked at the 1300 and like the look and performance, but its got too many issues that i dont like , like fuel mapping, seat discomfort, top heavy and its a bit of a pain to work on logistically, and has the potential electronics / software problems that cause you to be stranded. so tomorrow i am gonna look at another low mileage 1100, cuz they re just nearly bullet proof under 75 k miles. I do wish the 1100 looked like the 13 though, thats for sure, but i will take reliability over style. Enjoy your videos though, they are very well done.

    When I upgraded from my ST1100 in 2011, I chose a Concours14 which I like. It was less expensive and made more power. It took quite a bit to make it fit me as I have short arms and legs and the bars were too far away and the seat was tall for me. In the fall of 2019, I discovered that ST1300’s were really reasonably priced, so I picked up a 2007 ABS. In 2020 I took it to Montana in August. The first day out, I melted some prescription pills that were in my luggage. Those mufflers get really hot!! I have never seen that with my ST1100 or my Concours14. The stock mufflers may have to go. As far as noise levels, there is definitely a happy medium. I love quiet stealthy bikes, especially off road or woods riding. But i find and V2 or V4 engines sound amazing with less restrictive pipes but they have to be modest or it wears me out on long rides. I dont always buy into loud pipes save lives. I think this used to be the case but ive changed my opinion. People drive with earbuds, radio cranked, and all the other distractions. As well as most drivers in populated areas being less courteous and more selfish. I truly think loud pipes are useless in today’s world as a safety tool. The only thing that can protect me as a rider is maintaining a safety bubble from others on the road. I think the highway is one of the most dangerous places to ride and takes the most attention energy to stay safe. Cheers on the great vids!

    snorkels, venturis, velocity stacks all tune the harmonics of the intake. you can do some math with the speed of sound and the length from the end of the venturi to the intake valve to find the rpm the first harmoc hits. even though it seems like a restriction it increases power at mid to low rpm. the longer the intake the longer it takes for the sound wave to make it back the lower the rpm its tuned for. probs best to keep them, by removing so mutch length you've propbibly pushed the first harmoic up and over the red line and you will never get any bennifit.
    those burbley low rpm small block chevys make more power on a high tunnel ram then a low dual plane.

The loud sound would anoy me everytime I would ride or cruise on the bike. Same as putting loud pipes on motorscooters. These aren't race bikes. Well done and produced video. I was told by my mechanic who has been racing since 1974, that exhaust wrap will make the exhaust brittle and fall apart in the wrap. The pipes are not designed to be that hot constantly. Thoughts? As for removing the velocity stacks, did you get actual gains? Dyno? Changes in low or high rpm operations? There has been a lot of debate on the forums and the general consensus is to leave them.

    • @RodRidesWrenches
      @RodRidesWrenches  Před 2 lety +2

      Regarding header wraps, minor expense to manage heat, headers deteriorate when water is trapped against the pipe, they rust. The exhaust gas is already running 600 -850 plus Fahrenheit so I don't subscribe to the issue of heat damage from the wrap. No dyno numbers but again you can try it for literally no expense other than your time and see what you think. Everything done I find the bike makes more torque, especially under load like riding two up. Thanks for liking & subscribing and a new ST1300 video is coming this Friday!

    You don't know where I live. Uh-oh, one may easily see it in my road video's on CZcams.
    I feel like only few motorcycles are spotted early with loud exhausts, mostly only from the rear. Some mastermind, so to say, tried with video to find out if his loud music, on four speakers that he had, could scare deer away from the road. No matter what he did, you just heard the motorcycle coming but the extra noise was noticeable for a second and not alarming.
    Cars are well sound insulated and drivers are in an environment of their own, where they often play music or are in conversation.
    It wouldn't be a mistake to run lights daytime. Everybody keeps good eyesight. My ST1300 has almost blinding LED headlights and LED taillights. We are not allowed to overtake vehicles on the right side down where I live and I think that matters. It makes it easy staying in both the mirrors and there are not so many cars in front of you. As a result the police in many countries would pull you over when the exhaust is worked on. It is unnecessary to make pipes loud. When you do, don't expect miracles, like "Now I am noticed." Rev. bombing also, never heard of in Europe.

    Hello again, may I ask you a few more questions about installing Delkevic 18" slip o mufflers on my 2003 Honda ST 1300 non ABS. I now have the mufflers and would like to install them soon. If I choose just to slip on the mufflers without doing the other mods in the air box. And is the O2 sensor mounted ahead of the muffler so the mufflers just slip on the bike. Again thank you for all your great videos and I have subscribed to your channel.

      Yes that's the way just remove the factory cans and install the delkevik ones.Straight forward but use map gas on the clamp bolts prior to loosing them. Without the heat they will break.

  • @Beyond2Wheels
    @Beyond2Wheels Před 2 lety +4

    So, I started watching your channel because I got an ST, and I watched one of your other videos and liked it, but some of the things you say in this video is way off, those tubes you are removing from the intake have nothing to do with debris and everything to do with tuned intake length. They are designed to increase air velocity by giving a straight steady stream of air flow. When you remove them air tries to come from all different directions and combined with sonic pulses coming back through the TBs causes a lot of turbulence in the intake. As for the AIS, the bike is tuned to have that much oxygen in the exhaust so unless you are installing a 02 eliminator and a power commander or equivalent. Plugging the AIS will cause the bike to run leaner. The last thing is the header wrap, yes it saves you from the heat, but it pushes the heat further back in the exhaust. Keeps the Temps higher further back, if you are running aftermarket exhaust, you probably going to burn out the packing pretty quickly. The engineers actually know what they are doing sometimes.

    I want to use a st1300 v4 engine in a very light car. I want to remove emissions and add a turbo with better throttle bodies, injectors, and fuel pump. I'm wondering if a port and polish is needed for better breathing? A goldwing can easily make 200 up to 300hp but everyone says the 1300 can't do the same. A k1200 is better then this bigger Honda motor? How much power can this actually make?
    I want real motor since it's not in a motorcycle. Any advice?

    • @RodRidesWrenches
      @RodRidesWrenches  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello Darren, there are no specific pitfalls with the ST1300 I would say. You need to be careful loading the rear of the bike up and adjusting the preload (more preload to compensate) out back if carrying weight in a tour pack or a passenger. It has never happened to me with three bikes, 2003, 2004, 2008 and some autobahn speeds but others claim to have had tank slapper moments on the ST1300. Keeping the front wheel firmly on the ground will prevent this. There is a whole series of maintenance videos on the channel for the ST1300 as well as other bikes that will cross reference. czcams.com/video/HSejFW3HUwM/video.html I suspect that you will need to do some work on any bike of that vintage and mileage - Good Luck!

    Hello, and thank you for all these interesting videos. Among the performances increase I am wondering about the air inlet hoses removal. Forums say that they are bound to fine tune the amount of air and balance it between the 4 cylinders and bring more torque at low/mid RPM. Did you have the chance to make your own impression before/after this mod ?

    • @RodRidesWrenches
      @RodRidesWrenches  Před 2 lety +1

    thanks for info, I removed cones and wow. I have my fi light come on if bike is not warmed up enough. After lookig at wirring diagram i am thinking of bypassing the temp that turns fan on. One method of clearing fault codes says you must wait until fan cuts in, why. The temperature sensor wirring goes through the ecu, maybe i can bypass it. Lots of testing to do first

      Hi David, did the light come on after you removed the airbox intake funnels/snorkels? I think this could be a poor connection at the IAT (top rear of airbox) or a vacuum line. I have had no FI issues. I would check all the sensors, IAT, MAP, TP and replace before messing with the fan.
      How many blinks when you turn on the ignition from the FI light?

    is a power commander gonna be required if i do these basic mods?

    • @RodRidesWrenches
      @RodRidesWrenches  Před rokem

      Hello Jonah, No you don't need to use a power commander on an open loop FI system for everyday use. Your factory system uses the O2 Sensor to adjust mixture. If you experience a lot of exhaust pop on closing the throttle, the power commander is a nice option to adjust the "Zero Fuel Throttle Close" mapping to allow for some additional fuel when chopping the throttle. But for most riders this is not required to experience additional gains from a pipe & high-flow.

    The ST1300 is not the right bike for you I'm afraid. There's no point at all of increasing the power of this wonderful motorcycle over the standard level. It has plenty of it right from the factory. Also the argumentation about louder pipes is a lot of bullsh*t. More and more roads are closed down for motorcycles in order to reduce the overall noise level. Tell me what is better: Riding a silent bike or not being able to ride your bike on nice winding roads at all?

    Not on board with the whole loud pipes thing. Sound radiates away from the rear of the bike, as you've demonstrated. As both a rider and a cager I can attest that I can't hear the stereotypical Harley coming up on me until he's in my blind spot. In that regard (safety) I feel it's a myth, and wrong to perpetuate misinformation to newer riders, giving them a false sense of security.
