Do you think part of Conor’s downfall is that he has taken more control of the direction of his trainings / strategy for fights? Rather than lean on his coach, that can help him with his blind spots and be more objective?

I think so for sure. After round 1, the corner were pretty positive, 'your doing good etc keep things as they are' they made no mention of the leg kicks, which were already a problem in round 1 because hse his leg was compromised, so the corner didn't adjust to what was happening and I think sometimes his corner isn't strict enough with him.

The leg kicks aren't the only reason why Conor over-extends on his rear hand punch. He does it almost all the time, especially because he tends to prefer if his opponent circles to his right, away from his power hand. His most successful punch is when he throws the left cross across the inside to catch the circling opponent.
It is bad punch mechanics, but he gets away with it because of how accurate he is; the opponent cannot take advantage of his being off balance for a moment because they get hit by it and are hurt.
Conor's talent is not so much that the left hand is some unstoppable shot, but he is great at getting the fight to a situation where his accuracy and the opponent's over-extension and off-balance causes them to be unable to take the shot. His round kicks get them moving in the direction he wants them to, and his linear/straight kicks maintains an uncomfortable distance, combined with his lead handfighting, to bait them to reach/lunge in, and then he can step/lean back and counter.

    Here’s my assessment:
Conor doesn’t have as much heat on his left hand due to pummeling in the clinch and most of all he’s no landing on smaller guys at 145lbs.
The 155ers are eating the left and still coming.
Conor has gone the way of Ronda rousey.
After winning all that money from fighting mayweather he lost his hunger while the division kept evolving, he hasn’t.
Fighting once a year against an inconsistent fighter like cowboy cerrone gave him a false sense of security to think he would just walk right through Dustin as he did 6 yrs ago but let’s be honest, in the first fight Conor hit Dustin on the back of the head including 2-3 more ground and pound shots on the back up the head before the ref called it.
And what people don’t know is Dustin is a southpaw but he’s right handed and Conor weaved right into that right hook that was the kill shot.
It was a great game plan by att coaches. Not too mention Thiago alves was one of Dustin’s cornermen he’s a leg kicking beast
Nobody as ever targeted Conor’s legs which makes me think if Conor fought someone like barboza or gathje they would murder him.
Now everyone will come for his legs from here on out.
So he needs to get active because the 155 division is shark water.
    Great game plan again:
    Early takedown made Conor work
Pummeling and clinch fighting tired out Conor’s arms and punching power
    Applied calf kicks
    Finished with high volume striking
Conor’s challenge on the feet is vs high volume strikers with big gas tanks.
He struggled against Nate Diaz and he got finished by poirier and would probably get finished by Holloway too.
    All high volume strikers.

Great analysis of the fight. 100% agree. I would also add that he doesn’t have coaches and a team as smart as Dustin’s. That also cost him I believe. Conor’s coach says he didn’t realise how brutal calf kicks could be which isn’t proper form from a head coach in my opinion.

I think the big thing is the weight class. He was undefeated at 145 and is 3-3 outside of that weight class 3-4 if you want to count the boxing loss to Floyd. If he wants to be the big fish in the small pond it needs to be at 145. Even there he might not be these days but he has a better chance than 155.

    • @stevenw2933
      @stevenw2933 Před 3 lety +4

That might help with inflammation and swelling but not the dead nerve part. Ice really helps with kicks on the thigh because its much thicker and the nerves are more protected. Calf muscles are smaller and the nerves more easily damaged. He probably couldn’t feel his lower leg after the 3rd calf kick. The main solution would have been to check the kicks or change stances and pull the leg. Conor did neither. He leaned into the front leg even more than in previous fights, good read/game plan from Dustin.

Hey Coach, tell me if you agree:
Conor has brought more eyes to the sport than anyone, so he deserves the 3rd fight with Dustin for the Interim belt (which would be huge for the UFC).
Since Dustin is looking to help his community through his foundation, he should go for the big $ fights. His biggest payday by far is the Conor trilogy, his next biggest payday would be Nate Diaz (who is asking for the match), after that a rematch with Khabib (if he hasn't retired) would be a huge payday, or Dustin could fight his teammate Masvidol at a catch weight for a mega fight.
GSP should fight against Khabib for the 155 belt at a catch weight, which would make it one of the biggest fights in UFC history. It would solidify Khabib as the possible GOAT if he wins, or GSP as the ultimate GOAT by winning a belt in a third division.

although he's by no means an mma expert, Shannon Sharpe was right when he said Conor is a one-trick pony. If the big left doesn't work, Conor doesn't seem to have an alternative way to win. His gas tank is below average, he doesn't really go for takedowns, he doesn't really go for submissions.
Gathje & Chandler have great wrestling & power in both hands, Oliveria has good striking and high level bjj, Tony has great bjj & dynamic striking. Conor only really has the left hand. It was enough vs the featherweights, but in the lightweight & welterweight divisions combined, he's 3-3. One of the wins was a close SD vs Nate, another was against a declining Cerrone who was coming off 2 tko losses.
At the moment, I don't think Conor beats any of the top 5 or Chandler. They're more well-rounded & are sharper atm. Then again Conor is capable to knocking out anyone in the divison, so you can never count him out.

    I HOPE COACH READS THIS
Coach I had some comments about your last podcast about the philosophy portion, I hope you will take the time to read this.
Coach Descartes was right when he said ''I think therefore I am''. He is trying to prove the essence of a human being, and the essence of a human being is not his hands, legs, etc, rather the knowledge of his own existence. When Nietsche tried to rebuke by thinking that the I is a presuppositon, its not. The knowledge of self cant be a presupposition, because you would already need to exist to suppose it. Therefore, the knowledge of your being throughout space and time is the essence of being a human being.
As for thinking of everything as vapour, i think of everything as ether. Nothingness. However nothingness is also confined in space, and nothing needs to exist NOW for there to be a reality. Hence even though its all nothing, it exists within a confined space, and within a particular period of time. Therefore, you have space and time. Now for this space and time to expand into matter, and thus form the universe, you need an emergence. The nothing emerges into matter (something). Scientists like to think of this emergence as the big bang, but then they also say that the big bang was random and chaotic and nothing became something just by pure chaos..BUT THIS IS WRONG !!! Nothing CANNOT become something though entropy (chaos) because if there is no organizational force propelling the expansion of nothing, you have further chaos. Then you just have more nothing, which are in perpetual chaos. Therefore, the entropy eventually needs a ''hidden hand'' which ORDERS the entropic nothingness to expand into space, in a duration of time, to become matter (something.) The hidden hand is GOD, and GOD is the only conclusion. GOD is the only entity which is PERFECT (not a composition, rather cannot be added to or removed from), and cannot be doubted.
Pythagoras's conclusion that everything is numbers is also faulty because it doesnt stop there. Atoms broken down to the nth degree are ether (nothing), but this ether has maethmatical confinements. Mathematical confinements are dictated by numbers. But what are Numbers? Numbers are order. Numbers are a determined machination. So whats behind an order machination? We already proved entropy cannot become tropy by further entropy, So for something to be ordered, there is a force behind it ordering its order, and GOD is the answer.
If you ask me, I believe the whole universe is a confinement (Even though ever expanding: golden ratio/fibonacci sequence), and the parameters of this confinement have been programmed by GOD.
