    Southgate hates to use Liverpool players either not correctly or not at all. He didn't even use Joe Gomez, Jarell Quansah or Curtis Jones and he didn't call up Harvey Elliott which I think is a mistake. Also he used Trent in midfield of all places, when he needs to be attacking right back.

    Tripper is not doing anything at LB, why not play Trent there and let him drift into the midfield?
    Play Bellingham and Rice as double pivots, foden as 10, Gordon at LW, and either walker or trippier at RB

    Southgate should put together a team. Not an array of talents. Noses have to pushed out of joint. Trent fancies himself as a Pirlo, when it's obvious he's a great attacking full back.

    Under Klopp he has constant runners. The tactics are setup for Trent to make passes no matter where he is on the pitch. At England there’s only one runner which is Saka. At RB he gets to play forward passes to the RW, where he doesn’t have to angle his body to make the pass. At RCM that angle to make the pass to RW is now tougher to achieve unless you have space on the ball, but with the way international football is, he does t get that time to turn and make the pass. Which is why to get the best out of him for England if there’s an insistence on not playing him at RB, is putting him at LCM where he’s naturally at an angle to make those passes to Saka. Unfortunately though Saka is the only player who plays to his strangths, while players like Kane are too stubborn to learn how to play for others when that’s the whole job of a striker, accommodate for the passers of the ball. England has far too many players who like running with the ball in their starting lineup which completely removes runners and available passes to make since every pass is to the feet of the players. It leaves Saka the only one and that makes England easy to defend against. If a sacrifice has to be made, it’s sacrificing some players for the sake of balance. You can’t play two tens when the striker also likes playing as a ten. Foden unfortunately should be dropped for Gordon, who like Saka is a runner. Trent should then play RB where he can find both Saka and Gordon as well as getting down the wing and floating into midfield taking the pressure off Saka to be the constant outlet. Walker should be the CB who goes out wide covering for Trent, with the LB slipping into a back three which again means another player should be dropped which is Trippier. Gomez should’ve been starting from the beginning but clearly Southgate doesn’t rate him, but that would create a balanced side with Rice as a single DM, Bellingham getting forward from central midfield and while he’s very boring, Gallagher will provide simplicity to keep possession as well as off the ball pressing. Instead what Southgate does is just try to stuff as much talent in the side with zero balance and blame it all on whoever’s playing RCM.

    • @sitaylor

      Southgate is a negative manager. If he's playing a back four he will always start Walker at RB.

    • @archerpool
      @archerpool Před 3 dny

      @@sitaylor Of course, I was merely stating how it should be, not suggesting Southgate does that because he’s a defensive manager. Ironically though England fans call for attacking football but demand two DM’s and two defensive fullbacks at the same time. England fans and Southgate are made for each other. England fans just don’t realise how hypocritical they can be.

    If Southgate set the team up right, there wouldn’t be an issue with Trent in the middle. The problem is there are not runners other than Jude….the main issue is Kane and the wings minus saka.
    Kane kills the space and doesn’t stretch the defense because there aren’t runners.
    Watched the game today….disgusted with Kane’s performance. A true CF basically playing CAM. Jude was higher up the pitch then Kane was.
    There was an instance where Jude made a wing run in the first half with walker on the ball…he saw then chose not to make the 60 yard switch. Not to worry Trent came on to drain the final penalty.

    I'm a Liverpool fan and I agree with a lot of what you say, especially about Trent's defensive weakness being overstated. That being said, I can't agree with the idea of dropping Kyle Walker. His pace is absolutely crucial to defending in transition. Due to the limited time together and massive limitations that all international teams have in their tactical setups, national teams need recovery pace and one-on-one ability to a much greater extent than top club sides. Walker has his flaws, but his pace in crucial, unless you want to see England drop even deeper to compensate.

  • @stevenhaas9622
    @stevenhaas9622 Před 3 dny

    I'd go easier on Soutgate not playing Trent if it was actually working. The story of England failures has always been one of shoehorning the best PLAYERS into the side rather than forging the best TEAM. For example shoehorning Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes, and Beckham into the same team. So if playing walker over Trent made England a lot better on the whole I would just chalk it up to some players not fitting a particular philosophy etc. However, Southgate still hasn't put together a great TEAM. While they are pretty solid defensively that's because the tactics take zero risk. Foden, Kane, and Bellingham all want to occupy the same space and none of them really knows what to do at the moment vis-a-vis the others. It means no one (except Saka) is running in behind to stretch and occupy defenders. I'd argue any success this team has had over the past 6 years has been in spite of southgate rather than because of him.

      You don’t have to be aggressive to play MF. You have to be smart. I played CDM, AM and wing. It’s about positioning and space.
      Trent’s strong suit is his passing….he needs a runner. If the wings are anchored and the CF is dropping in, then Trent cannot exploit the space. Like Trent, I can put a pass on a dime. You give me space…and the other team was toast.

    I don't think that's it's correct to say that Trent's natural position is RB since he was converted into that position to get into the team quicker. In my opinion the issue is the roles that Southgate has given the players and the selection. For example the build up almost always going through Rice and the middle areas being congested with no option of an out ball. So that combined with the phase Trent receives the ball during the build up phase is why you don't see him playing a more expansive passing game

  • @williamcummings3227

    The rat; that mainly operates on Sky Sports, drummed home the "Trent can't defend" narrative until it was accepted as fact. Anyone who possesses a brain knows he didn't get into and cement his place as a right back in the Liverpool side by being a defensive liability. His attacking prowess came to the fore after establishing himself as a capable defender.
