  • PEAK DISTRICT WALK FEATURING MATLOCK, BONSALL AND THE HEIGHTS OF ABRAHAM
"Matlock, Bonsall and the Heights of Abraham”
    Filmed 27th February 2021
    Post-production completed 9th March 2021
    *Contains some swearing*
During an exceptional mild day in February 2021, I decide to do my personal favourite local walk from home. My day takes me from Matlock to the Heights of Abraham, just above Matlock Bath, and then on to the very pretty village of Bonsall. The walk back from Bonsall to Matlock is an extremely pleasant one as I follow part of the Limestone Way, from where no words can describe the amazing panoramic views…..
Filmed in the Peak District in the county of Derbyshire. Locations include Matlock, the Heights of Abraham and Bonsall.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.
Special thanks to Dennis and Jan Kelsall and Visit Peak District and Derbyshire for their helpful information used in my research for this film.

Absolutely fabulous movie and Bonsall looks delightful; those views are to die for. We are blessed to be able to do rural walks from our doorsteps and this particular one looks fantastic. I know I always harp on about it but Riber Castle is simply iconic and I couldn't imagine Matlock without it. Smedley couldn't have picked a better location for his mansion. Great job Patrick.

Thank you Eric, I must admit I am quite pleased with this one. Bonsall is indeed delightful and I'm sure you can see why this is my favourite local walk. Many thanks again Eric 👍

Hey Patrick, another great vid. Many thanks for mentioning Dave and myself at the end! It made me smile. I remember this being a beautiful sunny early spring day, great to be outdoors walking. The route you took is also one of my very favorites, that I've done many times. Can't wait for the pubs to open again, and it would be my pleasure to buy you a pint Sir. Keep up the good work!

Morning Tim, thanks for watching. No problem about the shoutout at the end, seemed the least I could do after being recognised at the end of my walk! Yes this is one of my favourite routes too as you will no doubt have gathered from watching this. I might take you up on that offer one day! All the best and thanks again 🙂

  • @TR3XProductions1stChannel

Wow, that film was really enjoyable!! :-D I can see why it's one of your favourite local walks since it passes through many historic buildings of interest along the way to Bonsall and back, and the views of the countryside and Matlock were breath-taking from start to end. I went to Croft Castle in Herefordshire on the same day you filmed this and yes it was a very warm day when I went too. Usually when I go out on walks with my family, not many people greet us "Hello" or "Morning" back, possibly because I'm a teenager or something (I'm nearly seventeen). However, I went on a remote walk from Leintwardine-Ferney Hall last Saturday and I saw no-one during the four hour walk!!
Bonsall looks quaint, especially the number of crosses, churches and pub buildings they have. The film club sounds like a great place to go to, and it was nice to see Riber Castle as usual dominating the countryside. At least you met two nice locals at the end, most people nowadays like to be given a "shout-out" haha; I've coped with it many times on my popular CZcams channel. :-P
The soundtrack in this sounded brilliant; the guitar soundtrack at the start is my favourite as it gave a good introduction to the episode, and the music beginning at twelve minutes in is another favourite too. Looking forward to more episodes, and this episode is one of my favourites from you so far! :-)

Another lovely walk Patrick. I really do like them narrow stone walled ways. They would have been the highways in their day. Well, forget the miserable sods because the views were awesome and Bonsall a little beauty. I can see why you love the area and hey love pub crawling it. A good shout in the end there. Seemed to make up for that misery guts. All the best up there. Mark

    • @solitaryrambler
      @solitaryrambler  Před 3 lety

Glad you enjoyed it Mark, those stone walled paths are awesome aren't they. There are a lot of old packhorse routes around here so yeah they would have been the main roads back in their day. Nowt as strange as folk really with regards to that miserable sod, but certainly the walk and the views more than made up for that. Yeah nice couple of chaps I met at the end of the day, so it was good to give them a shoutout. Thanks for watching Mark and stay safe as always. Cheers, Patrick 😊

Another wonderful film, thank-you Patrick. I've many memories of great nights in the Barley Mow and the Kings Head. Back in the days when I worked for British Gas I spent a memorable weekend in Bonsall when a JCB dug through the village's only gas main in the car park of the Barley Mow, cutting off the whole village in the depths of winter!

Not lived in Bonsall for over 50 years but it has never lost its charm and my love of Derbyshire.
Sunday family walk would take us on those paths. Down stepping lane up Ember lane over the Heights of Abraham and into the magic of Matlock Bath..That must be the first time of seeing a video of all those familiar places.
    Many thanks.

No matter if you're a local or a visitor, the Peak District spoils everyone with spectacular views. Unexpectedly, we can have warm weather in February, and cold weather in April.
