I can help answer that question. Per Wikipedia, the reason as to why HSBC has ads on almost every jet bridge in the world is to promote that they are the “World’s Local Bank”. When they started this campaign in 2000, putting ads on jetways was pretty uncommon, so they thought that there was untapped potential in using this medium. So, they bought the rights to advertise on jetways in 81 countries, and that’s why we see so many HSBC ads on jetways. Hope this helps!

Whenever I fly to the USA it's usually with Delta/KLM. Twice I've been with Lufthansa but usually it is Delta on their A330 from Amsterdam then KLM's 777 on the route back.
With Lufthansa I flew on their A340 there and back from DTW which was amazing seeing that beast climb.

I have been using Virgin Atlantic for transatlantic flights for years, mostly in premium economy. Like you, I have found the cabin crew extremely efficient and polite (On our last flight back from the USA, my wife had a plaster cast on her arm following a serious accident, and the attention from the cabin crew was fantastic). I had wondered how things would pan out with Delta taking a 49% share of the company, but so far, no problems. Virgin Holidays is a subsidiary of the airline and I would rate them second to none in customer service, both before the flights and at the destination. My budget does not run to first class, unfortunately, but it was interesting to watch your video of the various aspects of travel in that section

I flew Virgin Atlantic in Upper Class from LHR to SEA in late September and had the same experience as you - great crew, terrible food (I think I had that same overcooked steak), pros and cons to the seat. The entertainment kept me going for the 10 hr flight, but they did not actually operate the bar on my flight. I left that flight thinking that all the advertisement I had seen for Virgin Atlantic Upper Class was an oversell. Granted, their lounge is the best, but I'm really buying the ticket for the complete trip, which includes the in flight portion. Great review, keep them coming!

Great trip report. I was scheduled to fly Virgin from IAD - LHR - JNB 2 years ago in Y class. In JNB, we were connecting to South African Airline on over to TNR. We made it to LHR and had a 12 hour layover. So, my son and I, exit the airport for the day. Come to find out our connection to JNB was cancelled. It was on a 787. They rebooked us on a BA flight that was an A380. The service from IAD-LHR was good, however, the customer service upon arrival at my destination was not the greatest. Our bags didn't make it with us and Virgin as well as BA were both giving us the run around about the bags. I'm in TNR and South African is doing the best they can to locate the bags but they are held up with Virgin or BA. It turned into a nightmare. They finally arrived in TNR about 2-3 days later. It was a mess.

Thank you for you honesty ! Although I haven't flown Virgin Atlantic I feel Virgin Atlantic does great at services such as lounges but lacks when it comes to more core parts to the business class service such as the seat and food. Personally I like Emirates or Etihad to cross the Atlantic (although I understand going form Europe to North America it would be an unlikely carrier to choose). I like Lufthansa, Air Canada, and Delta. In I prefer Lufthansa first because they provide the best meal service then Delta because their meal service is better than Air Canada.

And yes I miss the 747-400s. British Airways still fly their 747-400s.. Also, having had the experience of being a Purser Flight Attendant from United has helped me see the world...Flying is simply the best way to travel...And for me the trains in Europe are really nice to travel on when you have the time to see the different country sides... Dear Jeb, thank you and congratulations for your flight reviews. A nice addition to Dennis, Sam Chui and the others.
One information I'd like to see on your videos, at least for business and first class reviews, is the brand of the champagne they serve and maybe also the brand of perfume used in the amenity kit or the restrooms. It changes for every company and it also changes from a year to another.
I understand most viewers won't care but when you look for a flight review on the internet because you're actually gonna book a flight, it is a nice information to have in my opinion. I mean most business class and first class clients are used to a certain level of quality for many things and I still remember the headache I got from BA business class champagne (yeah I know, everything was wrong on those flights).
Keep smiling and enjoying what you're doing, it is very nice to watch.

Great review - I fly Virgin a fair amount (and have their top frequent flyer status) but never knew there was a roof garden in the LHR clubhouse!!! The seats are quirky but if you know what you're doing you can put them down yourself. That said, as much as I love them AA's Flagship Business is a better seat.
I had the same problem with SIA, the flap over seats have limited recline so you just can't kick back, watch a movie and nod off.
The A340 would be worth a review but be warned, it normally has their old seating. The seat seems narrower, the screen isn't HD, the in-seat power needs an adapter from the 1990's and, if you want the "antisocial side" as I call it, you want seats K1-K7 or A8-A17. Same great service though :)

Virgin's A330s are great for economy flying if you're travelling as a couple and you book yourselves by the window - no awkward third person to sit next to or squeeze past. Sounds petty, but it honestly made a huge difference to the enjoyment of the flight! Paying a bit extra for Economy Delight was worth it, in case anybody's thinking about it. You can skip the queues at check-in and have 2 or 3 extra inches of seat pitch without paying the considerable overhead for Premium Economy, and the views are better too - most of Premium is situated over the wing, whereas Economy Delight comprises of about 10 rows behind the wing. Hope this is helpful!

I flew on Virgin Atlantic in Upper class from LHR to JFK back in August. I sat in pretty much the same seat you were in. While I appreciated the amenities (e.g., I use the amenity bag to store my cables for traveling) and the wonderful service and food, I agree that the layout was very unusual and I doubt I'll do Upper Class again on VA. I've also done Premium Economy on one of their A340-600 (older planes). That seat was horrible for a PremEcon product. I could tell you more about it in another post if you're interested.

I flew on Virgin's ATL to LHR route last summer! They changed it to an A330 like a week before the flight though, I was so disappointed because I wanted to fly on an A340 before they all went away from the bigger airlines. The only problems I had with them was the wi-fi wasn't working (which I never use) and the personal entertainment screen was hard to use, overall very awesome crew compared to US airlines.

It's a weird seat layout- not the weirdest (that undoubtedly goes to British Airways), but it still doesn't make sense for the seats to be facing away from the window. As Dennis Bunnik mentioned on his Air New Zealand business class flight, having them facing towards the window rather than away from it would allow easier viewing out the window, and give a greater sense of privacy.

in 2016 I crossed the pond with virgin.
    i did LHR-JFK on an A340 and JFK-LHR on an a330.
The A340 had good enough legroom (despite the entertainment box), however the actual entertainment screens are tired and are not touchscreen. i was given an iPad for IFE as my screen was not working. apart from that, I have no complaints with the outbound flight.
The a330, although it has a newer cabin, was worse than the a340. The legroom, as you outlined, was 29 inches. I'm 6'4" so i don't expect great legroom but what i was given was simply unacceptable for a 7 hour flight.
The best way to cross the pond? Has to be the 5:30pm departure from LHR-JFK on Delta. that particular flight because, of the departure and arrival times, meaning you are not too badly affected by jet-lag as you are quite literally 'chasing the sun'. EDIT: the DL flight number has been changed)

Account Suspended I think you might have flown on their newer A330-200’s which used to be Air Berlin’s, I think I read that they are going to upgrade that cabin soon, but haven’t yet, I flew the A330-300 which I thought had good legroom, but I mean I am like 5’7 right now.

Salal's Trip Reports it couldn’t have been. In 2016, air Berlin were still operating.

Account Suspended ah I didn’t read that part pardon me for that, than yeah, they are VA’s, although if you search up on SeatGuru, there are 2 Types of seating for the VA A330-300, one which has 31-32 Inches of pitch and the 1-2-1 Upper Class configuration and the older one with the 29-30 Inches of pitch and the Herringbone 1-1-1 Upper Class configuration, you can check it out on SeatGuru, I think you got the worser seating I guess.

Recently flew VS104 from Atlanta to LHR in Premium Economy. Was a great experience! Excellent food, service and a good product overall.

Hey Jeb, great video as usual. I reckon you should review your ATL-LHR flight to compare the older A340 product to the newer A330. I have seen a review comparing the A340 with the even newer B787 and the difference quite apparent!

You aren't the only one. This summer I had a flight booked with SAS from Copenhagen to Manchester but a few months before we got informed that the flight got canceled so we had to rebook to an EasyJet flight instead. Neither are our 1st choice but we will use them if Norwegian doesn't flight where we wish to go. My family has been pretty loyal Norwegian customers since about 2010 when we first flew with them from Copenhagen to London, Gatwick.

Having been on a Copenhagen to NY flight on SAS a time or two, rest assured you didn’t miss a thing! Virgin’s “upper class” seating isn’t great, but it beats the heck out of anything SAS has offered in the past few years. My ‘feeling’ for SAS’s service is “what a waste of a high priced fare”. Thru friends at AirBus, I’ve heard rumors that Virgin has ordered some terribly upgraded ‘Upper Class” areas on a few of the newest AirBus offerings. I suspect that it’s going to go at a premium over ‘regular’ upper class. But don’t know for certain as yet. Should be rolled out late 2019 or early 2020. At least that’s the dirt from the exec connection at AirBus. Time will tell of course.

I had a delay with American Airlines. I was delayed for 3 hours! It was at Raleigh Airport. We thought we would take a A319 but after when we got inside the jet bride I noticed it ws facing down so much And I saw the cabin was in a 2-2 Configuration. I looked back to the front seats and we were in a CRJ-200 Everyone moved seats so I was next to a complete stranger I was on the aisle seat my brother way on the other side and our mom was behind me. I mean I did like it it was my first time riding in a CRJ 200! Also Nice video Jeb

I enjoy your videos, even though I would never be able to afford the first class flights! 😊 But it is very interesting and enjoyable to see what it's like. Maybe one day I'll get to experience it. Keep up the good work!

Hey Jeb, nice video as always! For me the best way to cross the Atlantic is with no doubt Singapores 5th freedom flight form Frankfurt to New York in First Class in their A380. BTW you should really check out the Sony 1000X Series noice cancelling headphones, they're way ahead of the rest, even the Bose QC Series. Best wishes from a German future pilot :D

The Virgin Clubhouse at Heathrow is one of my favourites in the world. They even have a hot tub.
