Qantas A330 Business Class vs. Virgin Australia A330 Business Class

  • In this video, we'll compare Qantas Business Class and Virgin Australia Business Class across Australia between Perth and the East Coast. These are the two dominant players in this market and both offer similar lie flat seats with upgraded meal service and other amenities .
In this #TransconThrowdownUnder, we rate Qantas and Virgin Australia based on their business class seats, their business class entertainment, their business class food, and their business class service.
In order to pull this off, I carefully selected transcontinental flights in which Qantas and Virgin Australia both flew their A330 wide-body aircraft and offered premium business class service. Further, I ensured both flights were at about the same time of day, which allowed for similar meal comparisons.
I developed a rating system in which we rate Qantas and Virgin Australia on the quality of their seats, entertainment, food, and service. Watch to the end of the video to see the winner.
Oh! And I even tried vegemite for the first time...

Great video. Unfortunately, you fell for the rookie mistake with vegemite. A little goes a LONG WAY, you're not supposed to take a chunk of it by itself. It's a powerful spread so a little on toast or just bread is the way to go, it's too strong to just chug by itself.

Nice review. I much prefer the VA product. The business class seats which they also use on their international flights seat really have much more room and are certainly more private. I've always found food and service better on VA compared to QF. VA's noise cancelling headphones are indeed quite good.
Check the origin of the word entrée when pertaining to food. It should be self evident.
I was a QF gold frequent flyer for years before being stranded for a week in Singapore when management decided to punish staff by grounding the airline and its passengers. I quickly took up the VA status match and have easily maintained platinum status ever since. Its partner airlines such as Delta offer benefits such as lounge access which are more easily achieved than just by flying Delta.

What’s nice about OneWorld Emerald status is that it gets you into all of the alliance airlines’ first class lounge.
Today I flew the Boeing 747-400 LCF variant to Italy (there are only four in the world). And tomorrow I ride Swiss Air; good times!

I have done the Virgin Sydney-Perth-Sydney and I pretty much agree with you the wine is great. the flight time is about one hour shorter flying east due to wind. I had been in a port side window and an starboard aisle and I think the aisle felt slightly larger. You are right if you are a couple book the two aisle seats on the same row. But if you have a small partner go economy as you can be closer and snuggle up.

Hey Jeb, you put the vegemite on toast with butter and spread it thinly...i promise you would get used to it. Its awesome. Also, thankyou for saying Melbourne normally...love the channel.

Hi Jeb, another wonderful video and as I am from Australia it was an entertaining one to watch. I was just wondering if you have ever flown Air Canada's economy class product from Sydney (SYD) to Vancouver (YVR). One of my friends is travelling to Canada in January and asked me to check out this product, and I was hoping you could help with some info. Thanks for the great video, Caden

Great video Jeb, but as an Aussie I have to say you were crazy trying the vegemite like that, you need a thin smear on toast with plenty of butter.

It was a great flight. Immaculate service by Air Canada in the air. The air New Zealand lounge was great. I must I was hugely disappointed in the Toronto lounge of Air Canada. both going and coming. Not sure if your experience was the same but here are my observations. 1. comfort was good it nice to get away from the hectic airport activity. .2. Nothing wrong with pouring your own beer, that is always a win 3. Here is the bad part. The food was just short of awful... There was a pasta dish that I could not identify. Edamame, potato salad corn chips with canned salsa and a few soups. Honestly Jeb they are screwing their business class passengers. They took our lofty business class money and did not provide us with a solid meal option in the lounge. We had just finished an 18 hour trip and that is what they were serving. By the way it was both ways. When I spoke to the woman at the reception desk she new of many complaints about the same issues. The food was so bad that my wife and I went down to the terminal and spent $80 to eat a meal. I did email to complain, and demanded to speak to somebody about this. Not sure what good it will do. I thought you would be interested in this though. I am not sure I want to give Air Canada my business if they have such little regard on the ground for its passengers. Your Thought?Daniel Green

Jeb mate come on, even us Aussies don't eat vegemite straight off a fork....we have the same reaction you did haha It needs to be on toast with cheese or a sandwich. Oh we don't slather it on, it's just a light spread. You should have asked a local for assistance lol. Good video mate

    Hi Jeb,
This is the first of your videos I've seen and not being a Virgin fan from when they commenced as a single class airline, the direct comparison was interesting. My experience with Qantas crews has consistently been the antithesis of yours, perhaps they were managing issues behind the scenes?
Regarding Vegemite, while not encouraging you to do it again, your test was guaranteed to have the outcome it had, by the manner in which it was conducted. Admittedly Aussie kids get toasted crust with Vegemite to "gum" when they are teething, so it's almost inevitable that they will become lifelong lovers of the spread. However, the way to sample it is, spread warm toast liberally with butter. Allow the butter to melt and then apply a barely perceptual layer of vegemite; eat while the toast is still warm. Enjoy it with a good milk based espresso coffee.

As a frequent business class traveller I did a similar comparison in October (Brisbane -> Darwin with Virgin 737-800) (Darwin -> Brisbane with QANTAS 737-800). I have been flying with Qantas for 20+ years, and if you had done the same comparison 5 years ago Virgin would have come a distant second place. Recently though they have improved their product (especially service) to the point where I believe Qantas needs to up their service.

That's so funny that you didn't like Vegemite. I bought that and Marmite at World Market here once and they were both yucky. I like curry so I would be more impressed with the food on Virgin as a matter of personal bias. Virgin Australia does appear to be a better choice with the more modern cabin too. Also, the haircut looks great.
