You can say the deals were a poorly thought out risk in hindsight or that he didn't do enough to get out of them, and I'd agree on either/both fronts. He made his bed and he's sleeping in a different one in Pittsburgh because of it. But expecting him to plan for a cap spike that's only happening because the world basically stopped functioning for a year and a half midway through those deals, and still isn't *actually* guaranteed depending on how this coming season goes, is insane recency bias. Dubas made plenty of mistakes as Leafs GM, I don't really get why so many people seem to get stuck on his inability to see the future

But one team had a hard time attracting free agents, they have plenty of cap space and they're in desperate need of a star player for ticket sales, so they offer play X 13M. When player X decides to take 10M to play for a better team, he didn't take a discount. There's no guarantee that he'll be Matthew's linemate next year and honestly the best case scenario for the leafs is him playing on the Tavares line. But we have enough evidence to see that Nylander sucks when playing with Tavares, who happens to be a point per game center and a player who produces around his point range. If he cant be a 40 goal scorer when playing with a center around his skill range then how tf is he gonna demand all that money when a big part of his success, this season, is him playing with a 2 times rocket winning center. If he goes to free agency, good luck finding a team who has a center as good as Matthews. To Steve’s point on the Leafs core taking less - Bergeron left $3M per year on the table to stay in Boston and keep the team competitive, about 35% less than he could have made elsewhere…I don’t see Matthews or any of the core four doing the same for Toronto…they might take a little less and pat themselves on the back for being team guys, but it won’t be substantially less like what Bergeron did, and that’s what would be needed to make a real impact

I think what people miss about the sweetheart deals and hometown discounts guys take is that those deals were signed at the perfect time. They mention MacKinnon and Marchand, look at when those deals when signed, it was before those guys really broke out. Marchand especially, his deal was right before his first 80 pt season. Or look at Draisaitl, he signed just a season out from a string of 100 pt seasons. Guys don’t take discounts, teams get luck with timing and the Leafs didn’t.
EDIT: Watched more, the reason Draisaitl's contract is so good is because they burned a year of his deal. If they slide his elc another year he would have been coming off an even more productive year and the number likely goes above 8.5.

There's frankly no justification to Mathews making that money. There's more of an argument for Marner making that money. Marner is the guy that makes other players around him better. Marner is the guy who plays in every situation. Marner is the best overall player on the team. For guys to discount him because he's not a center is bullshit. He plays more like a center than Mathews or Tavares. He just doesn't take faceoffs. Mathews should be taking way less on his next deal because he was hugely overpaid on this deal. Same with Tavares. If Mathews thinks he's worth McDavid and McKinnon money he should probably be putting up McDavid and McKinnon numbers.
