    Escalator training is one of the hardest parts of Guide dog training. Mr Maple is doing a stunning job, and you two are a perfect peer. We training guide dog puppies for 22 years and it is so nice to see examples of them living their best life ❤

    • @DeadlyHausfrau
      @DeadlyHausfrau Před 3 měsíci +22

      Agreed. Service dogs for sighted folks are usually not escalator trained because it requires a huge amount of attention from the dog to avoid drama.... but guide dogs are the rockstars of the sd community. They have to know these things.

      @@DeadlyHausfrauthat’s actually not entirely true. Nearly any service dog can be trained to get on/off escalators. However, most dogs coming from other types of programs (like my boy who is primarily trained to do mobility work) are not trained for this because the programs feel it’s too much of a risk for people with physical issues to navigate with the dog safely, especially when it’s crowded. It also puts the dog at risk because they can get caught in the moving steps by accident or even trampled by people trying to push their way through crowded escalator (very common problem in large cities). Most programs just feel it’s best that we use elevators (or stairs if we are able and prefer) for our own safety, as well as the dog’s. But I assure you, my boy would be very capable of doing an escalator. He comes from a program that trains the dogs to do very physical work and he is always extremely focused while working. It’s just a different kind of focus than guide dogs would require.
      I wouldn’t say guide dogs are better than other types of service dogs either. They all just do very different jobs. Most guide dogs likely wouldn’t be able to do the type of work my boy does and vice versa. Like people, these dogs all have things they excel at doing, and they are bred to encourage the specific traits needed. It’s not a contest about who is better. They’re just different and all awesome! ❤👍🏻

    • @DeadlyHausfrau
      @DeadlyHausfrau Před 3 měsíci +2

      @MashaT22 I have my second service dog, about to get my third (current boyo is retiring) and I think for the first part there we said more or less the same thing. But respectfully, I do think it's too much of a risk for too little reward in any case other than guide dogs... in 10 years of having service dogs over only one time not been able to go somewhere I wanted to go because we couldn't use an Escalator.

    • @MashaT22
      @MashaT22 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@DeadlyHausfrau I literally said just that as my ultimate point - it’s not worth the risk, so most service dogs, especially those from programs, are not trained to do it. I merely clarified that it’s not a matter of not being able to perform such a task because you said, “service dogs for sighted folks are usually not escalator trained because it requires a huge amount of attention from the dog to avoid drama.” You made it sound like other service dogs are not capable of holding the necessary attention span like a guide dog, and it has nothing to do with that because they are very much capable of doing it with the proper training. They also need to maintain focus no matter the task - especially for the type of physical assistance my boy provides that requires ultimate precision and attention so we both don’t get injured. In regards to the escalator, it is just a matter of safety and avoiding a possible accident that could injure the dog and person when there are safer ways like elevators and/or steps. That’s why other SD’s are typically not trained to do it. We are saying the same thing, but that one statement in your other comment is where I disagreed because a lack of focus is not at all the reason.

    Mr Maple wearing little booties is so cute. Does Mr Maple wear those every time you go out or just when you know there might be escalators like going to a mall? Service dogs are incredible to watch and how they can adapt to so many situations to make sure the person they are guiding stays safe.

      im guessing its likely only when he expects to use an escalator and if he ever needs to take an escalator impromptu hed probably take a service elevator instead as thats what alot of disabled people do due to safety
      edit: i probably shouldve mentioned i mean a safety elevator instead of a regular elevator as he can actually find regular elevators using maple, but alot of malls dont have elevators, but do have service elevators

      This is why Guide dogs are also taught intelligent disobedience and so many things! They have to make the best choices for their handlers, and other service dogs can do this as well and go through that much training as well. This is why so many dogs may end up not cut out for it. It's a big job for a special dog!

    This reminds me of a trick my family I used for one of our dogs. Poor girl was born blind and one of the things she had trouble with was stepping off curbs during her walks. We made clicking noises that signaled to her that there was a step. We called our selves her Seeing Eye People. But that little noise made such a difference for her.

      I've use the tongue click when walking a dog if they are sniffing around and not paying attention to the forward moment. This lets them know that they are about to walk into a tree or that we need to go around something😊

    Smart to use the booties. Back when my parents had guide dogs, they were taught not to use escalators because of the possibility of claws getting caught so that's great to know that they've come up with something so that you can use them.

    From my own experiences and from several videos I've watched, most service dog owners will either pick up their dog or have all 4 paws with booties on when using escalators. I've always wondered how it works for guide dogs because they wouldn't be able to be picked up to protect their paws. Thanks for showing us how you do it Paul! I worry about Mr Maple's front paws, but you are absolutely correct that dogs are less aware of their behinds, including their back paws. Sometimes my SD sits and thinks she's so close to me, but her butt is like as far as it could be away 😅 we've been working on that every single time we go out so she's better about it now, but you can tell her backend is like non existent in her brain. I wish I could've trained her better when she was younger, but she was never intended to be a working dog. She does her job great, and that's the number 1 priority for me, everything else gets worked on over time. I'm glad that guide dogs for the blind was accessible for you as I can't imagine the hurdles you would face trying to train your own service dog.

One thing I do like specifically is being able to show my two year-old and my four-year-old how you and Mr. Maples work together and that dogs like Mr. Maples are at work and we don’t go up to them and pet them. We say hi from a distance because those dogs are working and we don’t want to disturb them or have anything bad happen.
    This is something that I see so many parents don’t do with their kids and so many people who have assisted dogs, especially dogs get thrown off or get hurt because kids are running up to this dog and distracting the poor dog

    Oh, I really need a doggo like Mr. Maple! I fell face down on an escalator (that was going down) when I was between 4 & 5 years old. I froze in panic & couldn’t get up. I just watched in sheer terror as I was sure I was going to get sucked into the escalator mechanism at the bottom. My mom & grandmother were there, but I think a stranger lifted me up onto my feet. I can’t remember if I had wandered ahead of them or what. I’m still uneasy with down escalators 45 years later, because I think scary things that happen before you are 5 stay with you.
    TL;DR - had a very scary fall on a down escalator before I was 5 & they still make me nervous. I need a dog trained just to help me not feel panic on a down escalator.

      Some assumptions:
      He has slight pinhole vision so that would help a bit.
      Other senses are heightened, so he can hear the escalator, feel the texture of the ground change.
      He's aware when he's in a space like a shopping centre with escalators so he's paying attention and when he wants to go up a floor, he knows the things to look for to find it.
      Guide dogs are trained to stop and wait at things like stairs, anything in the way that could be a tripping hazard, then wait for their handler to be ready and use a foward command.
      I'd also think Mathew would help with some directions, and a lot of travelling with Mathew, Paul would be following the direction of his voice.

    i used to be terrified of escalators (it became easier since i got more practice) and i can't imagine hard it is when you don't even see when you have to step on or off the thing.

    Paul, when do you put Mr. Maple's booties on? When you know youre headed to a mall or some other place that does, indeed, have escalators? Or do you put them on/off just before going onto the escalator? Ooh! QUESTION:
    Btw: do you also put Mr Maple's booties on in the extreme heat of summer, when pavements & metal grates, covers, etc. can reach dangerous temps & can burn his pads/paws? Thx, Paul
    As always, I love your "instructionals" - you really are a great communicator! MANY thanks, also, to Matthew, who MAY have been your paparazzi who captured all of this on camera! 💙💙🐾

    Also remember that dogs dont understand to pick their feet up at the end., When travelling with my dogo Pepper, she didnt pick up her paws and it broke all her nails at the quick, and she bled everywhere, looking like she was reallly hurt, cleaning her up, and all the blood, made us nearly miss our flight and i felt horrible for making her go on the escalators. ill never do this again and will take the extra time to use the elevators. its just not worth it, she was in pain for weeks till her nails grew back, and i could do nothing to help her. totally my fault all around. So be careful.

    Man. I've never thought about the little intricacies of being blind and having a guide dog. Small things like these, getting on an escalator. Also never saw a dog use an escalator
